Lys
User ImageHer first attempt at bringing a lion back for her sisters had gone completely awry thanks to the interference of that young lioness with the starry pelt. Lys still felt more than a little bitter about that. As far as she could tell, there had been no reason for Kerer to choose Arusi over her. She wasn't as pretty, or as pleasant, or as mature. It made no sense.

The experience had served as a practical lesson for Lys in why the lionesses of her pride rarely tried to seduce multiple lions at a time, and never when other lionesses were present. Other females evidently interfered with the seduction magic of her pride. That was good to know for future reference, even if it brought her no closer to finding consorts for her sisters.

Kurys
User ImageIt was a sleepy day for Kurys and he was idling his time away, looking at the sky as he walked aimlessly through the lands where he had grown up and continued to dwell after his family moved on, following the messages they saw in the clouds. He did not see messages in clouds like his family, but he enjoyed looking at them nevertheless. Sometimes he imagined that he saw shapes in the clouds, but never messages. Even to pretend such a thing would be blasphemous and against his upbringing.

After a time, Kurys decided that he had tired of walking for the moment and that he wished to take a nap. With nobody to report to and nobody relying on him, he could do that whenever he chose. Life was pretty good, he thought as he curled up to sleep. Even if he had recently lost some of the pretty shells he had collected along the beach earlier.

Lys
User ImageLys really wasn't the sort of lioness to cling to a grudge, and so despite her intense annoyance at her failure to lure Kerer back to the pride, she decided to chalk it up to experience and do better with the next male. And on that subject, Lys saw a very likely looking candidate drowsing a short distance away.

She moved toward him quietly, enjoying the sight of him as she drew closer and was able to notice more details. There was much about him that appealed to her. She would not have expected to find such a lean figure pleasing, but she wasn't just looking for herself. She was supposed to be finding gifts for her siblings.

Kurys
User ImageKurys was habitually a light sleeper. It came from having several playful siblings whose favorite game was to play tricks on whatever poor sib was the last to wake in the morning or the first to fall asleep in the evening. Once Lysende was about ten feet away he woke and looked around through eyes which were barely slit open.

When his blue eyed gaze fell on the lioness approaching him he opened his eyes completely and gave up feigning sleep. He had never seen a lioness that moved like she did. Silent and seductive and yet fearsomely intense. He didn't know what she wanted from him, but he hoped it was something he was able to give her.

Lys
User Image"You're awake," Lys exclaimed. This time she wasn't going for breathless. She was not trying to fulfill the fantasy of an adolescent lion here. She was trying to lure an adult back to her pride, and that was usually more successful when she spoke in more sultry tones.

She slunk closer to him and then stopped and posed just far enough away that he could see all of her without being able to touch her, but he could definitely smell her. She knew for a certainty that she smelled good. All of her family did. It was one of those strokes of fortune that they had done nothing to earn, but used shamelessly.

Kurys
User ImageThe lioness's voice momentarily robbed Kurys of the ability to form sentences, and so he just gaped a little and hoped that she wouldn't notice. The view he was afforded by her position was just...everything about her, really, drew him in. He wanted very, very badly to be able to be of service to her. He was certain that she wasn't like the other lioness who had robbed him. Someone as beautiful as she was couldn't possibly be a thief.

"Yes," he choked out as he climbed to his feet. He wasn't going to win any award for lucidity, but at least he didn't trip standing up. "You're...you're probably the most beautiful creature I've ever seen."

It was an embarrassing thing to have said, but Kurys couldn't help himself. Perhaps his sincerity would redeem his awkwardness.

Lys
User ImageThat was easy, Lys thought to herself. But then, it hadn't been difficult to get Kerer stumbling over his tongue, either, and things hadn't turned out quite as planned in that case. She mustn't become overconfident just because he had called her beautiful. It was too late to hide her smile though.

"Thank you. In my family I'm actually one of the plainer sisters," she said, beginning to lay her snare. If he thought she was beautiful and she could make him believe that she lived with lionesses who were even more beautiful, he would surely be more willing to come home with her to meet them.

She turned her head as if overcome by modesty, but really to allow herself a better look at him. That was when she noticed the fish marking over his right hind leg. Her eyes widened and she knew at once that she would not be able to share this lion with her sisters. He was meant to be hers alone.

Kurys
User ImageKurys shook his head and recovered some of his wits. "I hate to contradict you, but I find that doubtful."

And he really did. He happened to like dark-colored lionesses with pale blue eyes, and he knew for a fact that was not a common appearance. His family believed a lion's markings determined their future, which was why, as cloud-worshipers, they tended to prefer markings that resembled clouds. Along those lines, Kurys found his gaze drawn to the fish on Lys's hind leg. It was very like his own markings, and that could not be coincidence.

"I'm sorry. I should have introduced myself. I'm Sukurys. Kurys for short. What may I call you?"

Lys
User ImageTraining had kept her from gaping at his fish marking, but just the same it was a relief when he introduced a topic of conversation. If she was talking, she would have to look at his face and not his flanks.

"I'm Lysende," she told him. On a whim she added, "It means 'luminous.' Does Sukurys mean anything?"

So far she was not really deviating from the standard conversations she had been trained to hold to capture a male's attention until he could be persuaded to either donate some seed or come back to the pride as a consort. Lys wasn't thinking about that just yet, beyond knowing that she didn't want to bring Kurys back to the pride where he would be exposed to many lionesses more beautiful, intelligent, and talented than Lys was.

Kurys
User ImageBeing bold and taking the initiative, since he'd already gone ahead and said that Lysende was beautiful, Kurys moved closer to her as he replied that his name meant either maelstrom or whirlpool, depending on how one interpreted it.

"My family believes that a person's markings determine their future. They evidently thought that mine would be storm-tossed. I always wondered why none of them ever seemed to see the fish shape that I see."

He moved even closer to Lysende and said, "I don't think it's an accident that we've met, Lysende."

Lys
User Image"I...I don't think it is, either," she agreed. She was a huntress in her pride, and she was accustomed to being the aggressor. To be pursued, even as politely as Kurys was, was new to her. She had expected this to be a more challenging seduction than it was turning out to be, and despite herself she was charmed by Kurys. She really, really didn't want him to meet her sisters.

"Kurys..." She faltered momentarily. "Clearly we are meant to be together. So...will you be with me?"

In an uncharacteristic burst of cleverness, Lys remembered the herbs she and all other mermaids carried when they left the pride. Herbs that would render a lion woozy and forgetful. If she made him forget her and left before he woke, he would never choose one of her sisters over her. And she would get over him. She hoped.

Kurys
User ImageKurys inhaled sharply at Lysende's proposal. A part of him wondered if he had ever woken up at all, or if this was just a particularly pleasant dream he was having as he napped. It seemed almost too good to be true.

"I don't think I could refuse you, even if I wanted to," he told Lysende truthfully.

She was captivating, and if he wasn't dreaming, Kurys thought he would have little difficulty in staying by her side for as long as she wanted him. Details like why she had approached him to begin with, and what sort of lioness made such proposals to a lion she barely knew did not bother him at this moment. He was a young lion and she was beautiful and willing.
