The Montague Family
Montague Château, Pembroke, Wales

User Image

Centuries ago as the king of France, Phillip II, regained control of some of the English crowns continental lands, the Montague family strategically erected their claim to land and began construction of the Montague Castle in present day Wales. The castle stood as a promise and threat to the English king. Since then, it's been protected with various charms and enchantments, and, in rare instances, with curses.

Castle Defenses

Spells and barriers have been cast around the castle making it impossible to apparate into,

caterwauling, disillusionment, imperturbable, impervius (fire, blasts,) protego totalum, muggle repeling, stealth sensoring charm, and an undetectable extension charm and colloportus charmed door.

The curse taking up arms in the Vault Room is of lethal and ancient dark magic, the curse, mysterious and rare and ancient, is an engima--even to the Montague's. The whereabouts of the curse long forgotten, and any record of break in had been lost during the vicious fire in the midst of centuries old wars. Not even the Montague's are truly aware of what chaotic dangers lie there.

A hidden tunnel in the Water Room, Fire Room, Earth Room, Air Room, and Space Room, leads to Safe Room.
The Hearth Room has the only fire place connected to the Floo Network, but it is guarded under lock and key.
A trap door in the Grand Library grants easy access to the Foyer.
A secret passageway in the Atrium will extend to the Kitchens.
A trick step in the Trophy Room will deter eavesdroppers to the Dungeons.
A horrid curse is placed upon the Vault, and any being not of kin is susceptible.

Family Motto, Crest, and History

'Mort Avant le Déshonneur'

Death before dishonor

User Image

The Montague name offers it proper respectives to France, it's Mother Country and Kingdom. The Montague's had always served loyally under the crown, taking up arms and laying siege since the dawn of time when the Frankish king and Roman official Clovis I had united all of the Frankish tribes under one ruler and converted to Roman Catholicism.

The Montagues stood as noble power houses behind every Frankish King, King of France, and Emperor of French, loyal and proud and true. As Charlamagne succedded to the throne in 751, the ambitious and political means of the Montagues, trusted advisors and chancellors to the kings of France, had assisted their king as sole ruler, and by 800 he was crowned Emperor of the Romans by the Pope on Christmas Day.

Centuries later, the Montague's still stood strong, and aided the King of France Phillip II (the noted ruler who had changed the regal title from King of Franks to King of France,) had won back some of the English King Henry II continental lands, in the expansion of both France’s ultimate power and domain, during which, the Montague's seized lands in Wales, very closely neighboring the Nott's, the Dukes of Wales, and began their construction of the Montague Castle as military and political strategic move.

Bitter tensions sparked between the English and French for thousands of years, and the Montague's and Nott's were instigators in nearly each triggered war. Despite how tensions had always ran high and bitter, England and France finally settled upon peace. By word of his king, the Montague's were to offer fealty to the house of Nott, and for years, the two houses neighbored each other in "peace." But vengeance and vendettas ran thick amongst the two noble and ancient houses; too many treasons against each house; personal family wizarding war kept, for the most part, under secret from their kings. But as monarchy evolved and the world expanded, the two families have never considered a treaty of peace. Never.

spaceA large Eagle owl flew into the home of the Montague family, screeching for someone to come across him and take the letter he was sent to deliver. The entire scene before the letter was written and given to him and been rather stressful for the bird. He'd been approached and yelled at by his master's mate, who he knew hated him. And then, his master had yelled at her, and taken Gavin into his study, mumbling angrily. He'd written the letter quickly, with stiff movements, and had only calmed when the time had come to tie the letter to Gavin's leg. Gavin was unaccustomed to being allowed in any room but the main enterway, and was confused by all the yelling. All was not right in his household, and he was happy to have been granted a reprieve by being sent with this letter. He gave several more loud hoots, waiting to be heard.

Edgeworth Family Member
Mrs. Montague,

It is indeed a great shame that we have not acquainted our families with one another. Unfortunately, personal problems have arisen in my household, and so I do not believe my family as a whole is in any state to be taking tea with yours. However, I see no reason for that to get in the way of our sons spending time together. I would be happy to find time to meet with you. I thought that perhaps you and your son could meet me at The Leaky Cauldron when I take Damien shopping for his new supplies, if that suits you. If not, feel free to reply and give me a better idea of what would work out for you.

On another note, I have to ask that, in the off chance that you should receive a letter from my wife implying that Damien is not up to seeing company or that we are not interested in seeing you, please disregard it. As I said, we are having personal problems in the household and she is not taking it well. I'm afraid she is acting out. I do apologize for any less than friendly letters you receive.

Regards,
Wesley Jackson Edgeworth

Slytherin Dominic Montague
Unspeakable Charles Montague

Third Year, Slytherin Beater
Head of Deptarment of Mysteries

Delving deep in the honored silence of his duties, Charles turned another faded yellow page of his eight hundred seventy-eight page long report on the goings on of the Department of Mysteries as required yearly by the Chief Undersecretary of the Ministry of Magic to assure that all, is in fact, well according to plan. Strained stormy blue eyes sought for focus as another hour came ticking by.

A flutter of wings caught his attention, and the open window of his study was suddenly met with the imposing force of an owl slipping within, although, the owl didn't seem too intent on delivering any message for him. The regal creature met him at his desk, however, when it realized that the lady of the house was no where around, and, shuffling through several drawers in, Charles finally found a small bag of owl treats tucked away for a rainy day and offered two to the owl whom, he realized with a steely eye, he’d never seen before. Now content, the owl offered its leg with a dignified stance, quite content that the man’s fingers were not clumsy or crude. It truly only took a moment to read the small scroll of parchment, but within an instance, he found himself reading it again and again. It was then that he remembered his wife had afore mentioned the very letter that would, it seems, receive this response. Mary had very much conveyed her hope to meet the lovely Mrs. Edgeworth, unfortunately, it seems she would not get the chance, and, might not ever. How peculiar…

”Ritzy, summon Dominic, we’ll be leaving for Leaky Cauldron on the morrow, should give mon fils plenty of time to find his list of school supplies.. Ah, do inform mon amour that I will be escorting Dominic to meet le Edgeworth famille, as well…” With that, the house-elf ushered a momentary word of French before disappearing with a blistering crack.

***

Meanwhile, Dominic lay sprawled in the grass under the baking sun with scarce a wisp of clouds to shield him from the beaming rays. But he didn’t care. His cousin, Annabelle, had been forced to go on a vacation for the summer, and thus, he had no one to help him play quidditch. His broom was lying gently under his head, the cushioning charm really was more helpful than his professor had ever let on.. Or at least… It had its perks for the lazy. Two enchanted bludgers still spiraled high in the sky, and without a flyer for them to attack, the two balls thrashed against each other wildly like two hummingbirds in the sky…

Two bludgeoning hummingbirds, but, ehhh…

Suddenly, with a shrill and deafening pop, Dominic lurched to his feet—”—wha-ah! Ritzy, bleedin hells, don’ scare me like that!”

”Y-y-y-ess-s, s-so-so sor-soorry Master Montague, s-soo-so sorry—“

”Airght, alright, out with it.”

”M-master has bid you to seek out your s-s-s-school s-supplies list, you’ll be leaving for la Leaky on the morrow,” the house-elf squeaked before she disappeared.

Charles, more often than not, had found himself visiting the Tea Room more and more as of late. He’d begun to miss his wife more dearly than he’d ever imagined, especially during those cold nights bottled up in the Hall of Prophecy. He shook his head, cold static blue eyes darted left to right, wondering where in blazes the house-elf had gone now, but he sighed, simply too forlorn to call the little thing to his side. He remained in this reminiscent state, idly debating the long journey to the Trophy Room in hopes to find happier memories there, than here, guiding his children down a strong, ambitious path; but then an owl had swooped overhead and jostled him from his thoughts.

The hoot seemed to jest him, almost mocking him, as he coyly stuck his leg out, and then retracted it back just as quickly. Charles laughed, and produced a little treat with the wave of his wand until the owl had decidedly extended its letter. He recognized the sloppy, slanted handwriting immediately; it was his youngest son, Dominic. (His wife opted for Dominique, but, in London, he felt it too feminine to face the wrath of students at Hogwarts, especially in these changing years.)

It hadn’t taken long before he realized what it was about, and he blinked. It’d been years, he realized, since his eldest son had request friends over for the summer. too long, his wife would have said if she were here, but she was at school with Dominic and would be until the summer as well. After another moment’s thought, he conjured parchment, ink, and the stamp and sigil of his house along with black wax to seal it to begin writing a letter to Wesley Edgeworth.

spaceGavin flew gracefully through the window of the Montague's tea room, dropping a letter in front of its master, giving a friendly hoot. He extended his leg to offer his master's letter, hoping to get a treat for his trouble. Not that he minded the work; it was nice to get out of the house. Particularly lately.

Mr. Charles Montague

I have received a similar letter from Damien, requesting that he be allowed to spend the summer in your home. It seems our sons have been plotting while away at school. With things the way they are in my home, I do think that it would be best for Damien to be away from the Manor for his summer and believe that spending it in your home can only be beneficial to him. I would be quite happy to meet you at The Three Broomsticks to discuss the specifics. I look forward to seeing you there.

Best Regards,

The three wizards disapparated with an echoing crack and pop, before reappearing with the same bone cracking burst as they appeared just before a set of iron gates that led directly up to the castle. A number of charms, enchantments, and shields had guarded the castle, making it impossible to apparate into, or to floo into, unless through the use of the locked up hearth in the second floor. He nodded down to the children, glancing at each to make sure they were alright before he slipped his wand inside the keyhole of the gate. A moment of silence passed before gears churned the metal began to click before it finally unlocked and Charles held the gate open for the two boys. The trek up to the castle wouldn’t be quick, but it wouldn’t be too tiring, either. ”Run along to the castle now, Dominic, I’m sure your mum will want to see you.” He gently urged them as he slipped inside after them and turned to close and lock the gate properly.

Dominic nodded as he shuffled within the grounds, idly wondering why they hadn’t just gone somewhere to floo straight into the hearth room rather than make the journey. He almost wanted to try and summon his broom to him, but, he knew he’d have just screwed it up, and anyway, he wasn’t about to do that to his father. A part of him had wondered why the man had failed to acknowledge the sudden difference in his youngest son’s attitude, but, he decided not to dwell. ”C’mon then Damien, I’ll show you to where your staying—oh, and if you ever get lost, just call one of the house elves, my da’ always forgets their names, so, it doesn’t really matter what you call them.” He shrugged his shoulders, as if it was the most natural thing to explain as he ventured across the paved winding path to the front door. ”I reckon there’s got to be some sort of excitement down in Diagon Alley, if you want to head down there this weekend?”

Damien examined his surroundings carefully, quietly. Calculatingly. His own home was certainly as stately, as elegant, but no where near as large. His family came from lines as noble as Dominic's, but their home was much more... understated. Places like this tended to seem like a person was bragging, even when they didn't say a word. It was incredibly impressive. And it made it difficult to make such a place really feel like a home. So many rooms with no one and nothing to fill them... castles had gone out when the upper classes stopped keeping the lower classes as servants and letting them live in their home. Still, they were something to behold. Damien turned to Dom, a small smile on his face. His father didn't even remember the House-Elves names? Damien's own House Elf had essentially been his best friend until he'd come to school. "Diagon Alley sounds good to me."

Wandering up the grand staircases and down the long, wide corridor to the north hall, he pointed to the bedrooms as he passed them by. Every door embodied the same brazen wooden exterior, except, five particular bedrooms nestled together near the center of the north hall.
”These are the enchanted bedrooms, I’m in the air room,” Dominic gestured to his left, and, glowing around the cracks of the door was a blusterous, white vapor, and it leaked into the hall. ”Then there’s the fire room, water room, and earth, and space room. My cousin sleeps in the space room when she’s here so you can choose between the rest of ‘em.” He gestured, his hand sliding towards each door, and each one in turn glowed a different color, spurting forth fire, or wisps of water, or twinkling stars beneath the doorway. Each room differed drastically, suited to harbor any type of soul.

”Knowing you, you’d probably be more interested in the library then the rooms.” Dominic continued on after Damien had glanced at the rooms and decided which to settle in. Lounged against the stone walls, he smirked. ”It’s down on the other end, at the south hall….

“So, Damien, you never did tell me if you saw Marina again, y’know, after what happened…”
And I still haven’t told you anything about Gracie because of it, either. He realized and his throat tightened. How was he going to tell his only friend that the one thing he’d advised against, he set out to do himself. Suddenly, he felt a bit uneasy.

Damien followed Dom to the bedrooms, not bothering to even look at the Fire Room, actually flinching a bit at the door. He hoped Dom didn't notice. He popped his head into both the Earth and Water Rooms, trying to make a decision. Both were rather nice, calming in different ways. The Water Room was cool, the type of place Damien generally preferred. He'd always fancied that their Common Room was under the lake. But the Earth Room... it was warm, welcoming. It reminded him... of Marina. He shook his head, his eyes narrowed. That wasn't a good thing, right? He scowled a bit. He still had no idea what to do about that. He made his decision, but when he opened his mouth... "I think... I'll sleep in the Earth Room." That hadn't been what he'd meant to say at all. But, no sense in taking it back. The calming flow of the water might've given him perspective. But perhaps... perhaps being reminded of her would force him to think about it, instead of hiding the thoughts away. He glanced in the direction Dom indicated for the Library, and shook his head. "The point of my staying here was to spend time together, right? Reading's not a very social activity. I'm... I'm going to try to stay out of there."

When Dom asked about Marina, Damien froze. What to say? What could he say? He had absolutely no idea... he sighed a bit, his shoulders falling ever so slightly, his expression lost. He doubted if he had ever looked less like a noble son of the Edgeworth family in his life, save for the times he'd been out of it because of the incident. "I... I never saw her. I didn't get to talk to her... I have no idea what I would have said if I had... I... Dom, I really don't know what to do. Part of me... part of me wants to do like you said, keep her a secret, but she'll never go for it. I... the way I reacted... you know how she is, the Slytherin Halfblood. She always feels like she's not good enough. And if I tried to be with her, and hide it, it would just prove that it's true. And it's not. It's not... it's not fair that she has to deal with that." He looked at his friend, his eyes searching for some evidence of a plan, of advice, of anything that could help. Instead, he found... an expression that rather mirrored his own. What could Dom possibly have to be so unsure of? Damien's eyes widened a bit. "Dom... Dom, I've told you everything. Everything. But you... what's happened? Something... something's different about you." Damien was rather off put by how uneasy his friend seemed. Dominic was always so easygoing, so sure. So confident. But there was something lost in his eyes now. What on Earth could have happened to make him so unsure? Damien wondered if there was more to his question than concern for his friend. Maybe there was something going on that Dom was afraid to tell him? That hurt a bit. Because Damien had, in fact, told Dominic everything, things that were personal, could ruin him both at school and at home. And Dom had helped, or tried to. But his friend didn't trust him in return? Damien fought that thought down. It'd taken him two years to tell Dom what'd happened to put him in the Hospital Wing. Sometimes it was just hard to find the words.

Dominic hadn’t taken too much notice in Damien’s shuffle through the corridor as he slipped his head through the cracks of the doors, Dominic, meanwhile, had decidedly slipped into his own room to shed the weight of his overcoat and vest, leaving him in his plain white button up. He’d slipped back into the hall quickly, keen eyes taking note that his friend had slipped into the Earth Room. At the notion that Damien had neglected to see the library, he could only shrug and laugh.
”That’s a good point, mate, I’m sure there are plenty of books back at Hogwarts and at your house you’ve got waiting on you…”

Gesturing for Damien to follow, he doubled back around and maneuvered down the corridor towards the grand staircase. He wasn’t sure where he was going yet, to be honest, but he wanted to be outside—or maybe even the Training Room? He’d figure it out later.

Sparing a sidelong glance, Dominic nodded his head, understanding all too well just what his friend had been going through, and of just how wrong it would be keep these girls hidden like dirty little secrets. He didn’t want to live his life like that, did he?
”It’s not fair.” He agreed with a solemn nod, and he chewed on his tongue to keep it from thrashing behind his teeth. Suddenly, Damien seemed to notice all too well the discomfort that glazed over his features. ”Well, I erm—uhh,” he stumbled over the words, suddenly nervous. ”Eh, hehehe…” His sheepish laughter filled the hall as they made their way down.

Now or never, right?

”…..I guess I never really found the chance to tell you,” he tried to explain, and suddenly, he wondered why he’d felt so guilty. ”…The last few weeks of classes, you know I was talking to Gracie, right?” It would probably be best to start from the beginning, he decided.

”I don’t know if you went to the last match against Slytherin and Gryffindor? But I got knocked out right before the end of the game…. Gracie was the one who came down to the field and helped me to the nurses’ office.” Awkwardly scratching the back of his head, he wasn’t quite sure how to tell Damien this next part….

”…..And… er—she kissed me?” He paused, chewed on his lip and glanced over at Damien, wondering how he’d take it. ”Or… I guess I kissed her…

“I want to see her this summer, soon, er, eventually, or, er—…. I don’t know mate...”

Damien listened intently as Dominic stumbled through what'd happened with Gracie McHalen. His cousin. A halfblood. His eyes went wide, and he shifted uncomfortably. Maybe that was why Dom had been so invested in what'd happened between him and Marina; he'd been going through the same thing, although it'd been a more recent development. He sighed a little. "We've managed to get ourselves in quite the tight spot, eh?" he asked, the faintest bit of dry humor in his voice. Look at them. Two sons of the noble pureblood families, considering throwing it all away over a couple of girls. What would their fathers say? But, honestly, Damien didn't recall a single time that keeping to his traditions had made him feel happy. Only two people have ever made him feel happy, and both of them were halfbloods. That was what life was supposed to be about, right? Finding happiness? Of course, his father said that happiness was a modern invention, something to distract a lesser person from the things that truly mattered, things then could never achieve, like status and wealth. But... if those things were so important, why didn't the feel as good as happiness did? Why was satisfaction with those things so hollow?

Tension wrung itself into his muscles, he could feel it pinching in his shoulders but no matter how much he tried to massage the knot away, it only grew. He even argued with himself, debating if he even wanted to see his friends’ reaction to all of this, after all, she was his family. A part of his family the was, for the most part, hidden away. And he’d gone and…..

He sighed, and at the very last chance, he’d stolen a glance at Damien and breathed out a relieved sigh, taking careful note of the widened eyes and appalled silence that lingered there.
”Yeah…” he mumbled, but it was all he could manage. His own thoughts probably mirrored his friends, or at least, he guessed it did. All he could think about was his family, his honor, his title, his expectations and responsibilities. All his life, his father had chased him like a shadow, propelling him into nearly any and every sporting event, club, or activity where he could be the best. He recounted all of those trophies that he’d never wanted, but, had always fought for anyway. All of the sheltered coddling had been entirely to avoid this. And yet it still didn’t work.

”I don’t get it…” Dominic admitted once they reached the great doors again and then slipped outside into the open field encircled by neighboring estates and castles of Wales. ”They’re just girls… I mean… what are the chances that if… If anything happened.. would last? What if we did just throw it all away from them to just… break up? And then what?

“I mean, I don’t know if you heard about all of the rubbish with the Gryffindor Seeker, Sam, and his little fiasco. But if he bounces between girls, and everyone else does too, then….?”
He sighed, rubbing the back of his head.

”But, even if that does happen… Pureblood girls are always so….” He paused, trying to find the careful perfect words to- ”Bloody boring, and utterly fake, like… like a doll. Like a living, breathing, doll, that you can’t even have a conversation with, because they say the same things over and over again…

“Dammit, mate, what the hell do we do?

“I mean, I’ve never seen anyone ever act as… bold, or fiery, or spirited or reckless as Gracie or Marina are… Unless they’re halfbloods too.”

Damien shrugged when Dom brought up the chances of a relationship with the girls even being worth it in the long run. He hadn't a clue what was going on with the Gryffindor seeker, or even who Sam was, actually, so he couldn't really speak on that. He sighed a little. "Maybe... I mean, I know a lot of our classmates bounce around, but... maybe it's because they don't know what their doing. Maybe they don't think about it. I mean... we're just kids, really." On the bit about pureblood girls, Damien couldn't agree more. Or, more specifically, Slytherin Pureblood girls, since it seemed to be specific to their house. And he was, in fact, expected to end up marrying a Slytherin, not just a pureblood. Although, the Slytherin part was optional, if she was worthy... did that mean the blood status was, too? Marina was smart, and she had some kind of future in store. He wasn't sure what it was, since they'd never talked about it, but he knew she was going somewhere big. He shook his head to himself. No, his father was strict on the blood thing. He sighed. "I don't know any pureblood girls who I care to have a conversation with, let alone spend my life with. Or even date for a bit. I just... Even if it didn't last with Marina... I wouldn't want to go from her to one of them. Maybe..." He trailed off. He wanted to say, maybe it was worth trying, but... there was so much at stake. He sighed again, then his eyes went fierce. "No. I don't want to go from Marina to one of those perfect little dolls, who exist to look pretty and breed for noble lines. I want... I want someone bold, and fiery, and reckless. And you're right; every single one of those girls is a halfblood. I mean, even Adalaide... she used to be like that. Before I ruined her. Before I let my parents make me hurt her. And I don't want Marina to end up crying because my bloody mother doesn't think she's worth it. I... I have a scar from saving her life, and it bloody well was worth it!" He was practically shouting by the end, but for once, for the first time in a really long time, he had something burning in him. He really cared about something. If it didn't work with Marina, fine, it didn't, but she was worth trying, and she was infinitely more worthy of his time and life and love than any of the girls his father would want him to be with. He'd made up his mind. He might not come out and announce their relationship to his father, but he wasn't going to hide her, either. He'd find out when he found out, and that would be it.
