It was early morning and the sun shone through the trees, trailing sun beams in their wake. Nightfall winced. It was the rainy season in the swamp, and when it was not raining, the sky was often overcast. How odd then, that it was so sunny today. Normally the buck avoided the sunlight. He had learned when he was young, that the images he often saw in the sun were not seen by anyone else. A "gift", his mother had said. To tell the truth, it was more of a curse. His mother might have appreciated her visions, but those came to her in her sleep. Her ghosts did not haunt her in the daylight.

He lowered his head to pick up the small thrush he'd downed earlier and prayed that nothing would appear to him today. Just one day of peace. One day, was it so much to ask? And there he saw her, flirting in the sunlight, a specter of blue.

While she didn't usually hunt in broad daylight, her quarry was so small and quick that catching it at night would be nearly impossible. The black skinks scuttled back and forth over the roots, and she darted hither and thither, trying to crush their skulls with her hooves. They were small, but these particular skinks had a unique, savory taste that she just hadn't been able to find in any other variety, and they made a nice treat between more substantial kills.

As she chased the group, she spotted a buck between the trees. If it'd been darker, she might have mistaken him for the sunset sky -- charcoal gray striped with yellow and white. She paused on top of a root, head cocked as she studied him from afar, before the rustling of tiny scales drew her attention. Later, she thought.

Once she'd caught and eaten her fill of skinks, she would circle around and see who this strange buck was. Not many came to this corner of the swamp, remote as it was. Even her two hunting companions had elected to stay in more familiar parts of the Swamp, catching easier prey. She retraced her steps, back towards the spot she'd seen him in, trying to pick out his form against the tree trunks.

She'd come chasing prey, a memory of some long-ago hunt, perhaps. Or maybe a spirit left wandering in the swamp. He didn't really want to find out. Ghosts and spirits had a nasty habit of sticking to him. He watched the blue doe scamper into the bushes and then turned head and left. Perhaps she would be gone by the afternoon.

Evening cast the shadows of the trees in dark streaks across the land. Hazy sunlight filtered through the leaves, and Nightfall found comfort in the encroaching night. He looked around. No sign of the blue doe from earlier. A sigh of relief escaped his lips, and he found himself, not for the first time, cursing his blood. His mother may have welcomed her visions, but she did not have to see them in the daytime. Her visions came to her in dreams, whereas his haunted him day after day.

Suddenly, he heard a snap. Nightfall whirled around and in the corner of his eye, saw the flash of blue.

"What do you want with me?" He called out in frustration.
