Trimming Kitties Nails

Trimming your cats nails should be one of your top grooming responsibilities. Trimming them saves your furniture, promotes nail health and also helps if you have a cranky kitty who plays a little too rough.

Nails should be trimmed at least once a month, with a pair of cat clippers. Never use human clippers as it can sometimes split the claws. Pedipaws (the nail grinder) shouldnt be used either, as cats are put off by the sound.

Also make sure to have some Quick Stop on hand for those times you go a little too far and nick the quick of the nail. It stops bleeding instantly and no harm is done for your cat. If you dont have any on hand, keep an eye on your kitty. If you went to far, you may have to consider getting a diffrent litter to avoid infection in the cats paws, and just wait it out. If your concerned, see a vet.

How to Properly Trim a Cats nails

Helpful Link to Trimming cats claws

Make sure you never do more than your cat will allow you to do in one sitting. Some cats dont like having their feet touched, so I would invest in a helper to scruff the cat while you trim the nails. One claw a day for a week or so wont hurt.

Press gently on the pad of the foot and expose the nail. Trim the tips, but never go as far as to nick the quick. If your cat has black nails, just get the tips if you can.

Dont forget the dew claw! Cats are pretty good at keeping their claws sharp but due to the location of the dew claw, it never gets used. To avoid problems (and discomfort due to overgrowth) make sure you trim it. smile

Declawing

The Truth About Declawing
A helpful thread in our sister Pets Forum made by Vegeta Lover239. Please check it out.

Declawing cats is illegal in several countries and the US seems to be the only place still performing the practice. Several states have jumped on board and I know that Shelters and breeders wont adopt out if you plan on declawing your cat.

Declawing cats seems to make more problems crop up with agression and anxiety in felines. If you think you need to have it done, because your cat has destroyed your furniture, please reconsider. Its removing the top part of their toes.

Cats NEED their claws for scent marking and anxiety relief. If you see your cat scratching obsessivly and you know he has plenty of healthy outlets, check the stress level in your house.
