What is a Bed to a Cat?

Cats spend about 1/3 of their lives sleeping, dozing, or napping. They take the best chairs, the warmest sunspots, and sleep wherever they most certinly feel like. Cats are nocturnal creatures by nature, so the need to sleep while the sun is out is overpowering.

Providing a bed, or simply handing over your own, is up to the owner. Just keep in mind that later on down the line, if you find a partner who isnt fond of cats, you may not want them to sleep in your bed. As long as you can provide a comfortable napping spot, the cat will be happy.

Choosing a Bed

There are so many beds on the market of all shapes and sizes and sometimes it can be a little overwhelming. Remember: Practicality over fancy. Think: is it functional? Does it serve a purpose?

Basic Beds

These beds are the round or square beds that have coushins in them. Decently priced, they can be found almost anywhere, from a wide arrangement of colors, to shapes, to designs.

Cozy Houses

These are beds that form a little squishy sleeping area for your feline. Covered, warm, and usually made of a soft plush, these are nice in the winter for making little toasty caves for kitty to sleep. These can usually be found at petstores.

Thermal Mats

A portable sunspot! Most cats will enjoy these and like the heat that comes off of them. For arthritic/geriatric cats, these create toasty slumber areas that can be put just about anywhere of your choosing. Can be found at petstores.

Your Bed

Cats will (most of the time) choose to sleep on your bed. Why not? Its large, cozy, smells like their humans, and is one of the most comforting spots in the house. smile Just keep in mind that if you dont want kitty in your bed, provide one of the above mentioned beds and start as early as possible.

Overall....

Owning a cat doesn't need to be exspensive. Sometimes theyd even perfer a computer chair over their fancy smancy bed you purchased. smile Cats can sleep just about anywhere they feel comfortable at and know your cat before you buy. Most cats wont turn down a toasty thermal mat, while others will turn their noses up at the idea of everything but YOUR bed. Just provide safe sleeping areas for your feline.

Or if you find something your kitty likes to sleep on and you try to replicate it.... be ready for the cat to kind of laugh at you if you want them to pick somewhere else to nap.

Taz will often choose to sleep on my boyfriend's computer chair but then she will stretch and scratch it. How can I make her not scratch it? We bought a scratch post and have multiple boxes for her to destroy which she does. But she still likes to stop by his chair and scratch it...

Is she scratching the seat/cushion, or the base?
Scratching can be a form of marking; it could also be her way of trying to make it comfier for herself (like how a personal will plump the pillow before using it).

The easiest way to stop the scratching would be to make the chair completely off-limits, at least if it's the seat

She'll scratch anywhere there is cushion. So she'll scratch the seat and the part you put your back against.

I would make it off-limits to her completely, than. Cover with unpleasant surfaces (foil pie pans on the seat, double-sided tape on the back/around the edges of the seat if the pans aren't enough of a deterrent) so as to booby-trap it, basically (so she gets negative association with it rather than people for correcting her).

It's most likely a result of either the type of fabric or (more likely in my mind) something to do with the stuffing inside (a smell or whatever that's not strong enough for you to pick up on)

Right? What kind of material is it? She might be getting her claws in it to stretch her feets. Or as Aki said, making it so that its comfier for herself.
