History


☠ HOMETOWN ☠xx Altais was born and raised in the decrepit city of Corsairh in the Lands Below. Corsairh is a seaside town, the only trade to be found within its walls were hopelessness, destitution, and crime. And trade certainly prospered in Corsairh. The city itself was a stinking mess of black and grey ash, vomit, urine, and feces coating the streets, along with congealed pools of blood. The waters were littered with bloated corpses and oil, the sea holding nothing but predators that could easily kill a man trying to catch his supper.
Corsairh was a place where there were no Kings and no laws. The only law you followed in Corsairh was the one that would keep you alive. And there were no restrictions to that law. If you had to kill to gain a coat, then you killed. If you had to rape to slake your desire, then you raped. If you had to steal to eat, you stole. There was no such thing as working together in the rotten place; if anyone offered to help you, they wanted something from you. If you didn’t give it to them then they would take it, and take your life along with it as well.
. To survive, you were forced to make the worst possible decisions. To survive, you had to accept the demons and shadows living within your own breast, your own heart. You had to push aside all sense of humanity, all sense of morality, all sense of self. The only constant in the sick town was the hopeless, the chaos, the crime, and above all, the evils and sins of humanity.

☠ PARENTAGE ☠xx Growing up in the city of Corsairh in the Lands Below, Altais never knew his parents. As Corsairh was filled with nothing but crime and hate, the boy had an extremely rough time growing up. He had been told that his parents were drug abusers, that they were both prostitutes, that they had been smugglers, thieves, nobility, and anything in between. He could never get a straight answer as to who they were, or why they had not raised their child.
As Altais had no home, he made his living on the streets: stealing, killing for a coat or bread, running from anyone who wanted anything he had, and sleeping under awnings or in sewers. One day, he was being chased by a trio of men who wanted to capture him and sell him to a brothel. He had given them the slip after sustaining a ragged cut across the ribs, several broken bones, and losing the small pittance he had been saving his entire life in order to leave the city. Dejected and hopeless, Altais had made for a large, splendid house which had a side-porch. He had hoped to spend the night on the doorstep on the side of the house, as it had a small awning over it to keep off the promised snow during the dark hours, but before he made it, he passed out from blood loss and exhaustion.
When he awoke, he found out a man named Alston owned the manor and had graciously taken him into the household. Altais grew close to the man who was in fact a Demon in disguise. This man, by the name of Alston, took Altais under his roof and gave the child his name. To Altais, Alston seemed to be only on his late twenties, and was a kind-hearted man, as well as his savior. Alston gave him a warm bed, food every night, and even an education in exchange for Altais' loyalty, to which the boy readily agreed. Alston became a brotherly-figure to the child, and Altais stayed in the house for four years until he found out who and what Alston really was.

☠ CHILDHOOD ☠xx Altais lived with Alston for a good four years before he began to sense something off about the man. Alston had been very kind to him for as long as he had lived with him, so when the man asked Altais to accompany him to go see some of his friends, the child jumped at the chance. They arrived at a laboratory, where Alston spoke with many men who seemed not-quite right to the human child. He asked Altais if he wanted to be like Alston when he grew up, able to bend the world to his will, find his parents, and take revenge on all those who had hurt him and stole from him when he was living on Corsairh's streets. Altais agreed fervently, and Alston had laughed, guiding the boy over to a chair, where the men hooked up wires to the child. Alston held Altais' hand as the men turned on the giant machine that the boy was hooked up to, and Altais had screamed and then blacked out. Thus a Demon was born.
☠ POST-CHANGE ☠xx Following Altais' transformation, Alston began training Altais in what it meant to be a Demon. He taught the child how to control his powers, how to form a Contract with humans, and took him to the Great Abyss and introduced him to his 'Brothers.' Altais is the only being alive who is part Demon and part human, and since his transformation, he has never been quite sane.

x x x x↳xx Though they're not related by blood, Altais sees Alston, even now, as family. When he was a child, Altais was saved -- mentally, physically, and emotionally -- from the sins of Corsairh by the man. He took Altais into his home, and even gave the assassin his name, back when he didn't even have one. When that happened, Altais swore to himself that one day he would make Alston proud of him, no matter what it took.
The assassin still looks up to his mentor in so many ways, and even though he was betrayed in a sense, he doesn't see it that way whatsoever. He still yearns for the Demon's acceptance, still seeks the older man's love for that little boy he rescued some two hundred years past. Altais would do anything for Alston, even at the cost of his own life if the situation demanded it. Somewhere deep down, he realizes that Alston doesn't love him and never will, since almost all full Demons are simply incapable of the emotion. The most they can manage is affection, and to Altais, that is more than enough.
If Alston ever needed his aid, Altais would drop everything he was doing, even if it meant the death of many in his Guild or even some of his closer friends. Alston still has control over Altais, and the Elder Demon knows it, but surprisingly, does not abuse that power. Altais is all the more loyal to Alston for that very reason, and he hopes that one day, he can be as strong as his mentor.

x x x x↳xx Altais met Vita one day while waiting to meet up with one of the Guild's commanders. She had fallen from her horse, and he had gone over to see the circumstances. What he found had cheered him greatly: a girl so torn and anguished by the loss of her Bonded, which was a situation he could easily exploit. Following their meeting, he let her vent her worries and frustrations to him, and he drew closer and closer to her in order to gain her trust. Because of the trust she has for him, Altais is able to feed in small amounts from her on occasion.

⚔xxx C a i r n e
x x x x↳xx Altais met Cairne four years after he came to the Isle via his Rogue Airship from the Lands Below. He met the man in a bar in the Red Circle in Avandere [ [ Subject to change after RP with Puddle ] ] . Originally, Altais had drawn Cairne into a long conversation, and during that time, he was amazed at just how brightly the man's Soul shone in his Sight. His intentions were to form a Contract with the man, and that would've been his big Mark for the half-century. However, when given the offer, Cairne let out a booming laugh and decked Altais in the jaw. Even with his super-human reflexes, the assassin could neither dodge nor counter, and so fell to the ground. The Demon looked up at Cairne, startled, and Cairne offered him a hand up. Since then, the two have been as close to friends as they could become, having an easy truce and an understanding of one another.
Altais has decided to remain at Cairne's side for the time being, knowing that where the man goes, doubtless interesting things shall follow.
