Even though Melvin was reading up and getting ready to do some of his own work, he still had plenty of free time, and still hoped that someone in the labs would eventually give him something useful to do. As it turned out, this wasn't the case. Machines still needed fixing, broken beakers still needed to be swept up, and there was plenty of organizing that, which Melvin generally liked it, wasn't something that inspired a sense of worth where he worked.

Among the many mundane tasks, he was given a clipboard and told to head over to assist one of the members in the medical wing. Like most things, he was given the bare bones, more of a grunt and a shove in a direction, and told where to go and who to report to.

Frowning, he followed the vague directions, got lost twice, and finally ended up in a room lined with beds and lined with glowing machines. Looking around, he checked the clipboards at the ends of the beds, feeling out of place among the lingering doctors, before he stopped at the bed of a man near the end, and glanced at the name 'Lance'.

"Excuse me? I'm supposed to report to you." He said, checking the clipboard that essentially only told him that he was going to see a man named Lance. The rest was gibberish he didn't understand.

His hands froze in place, hovering over the keys as he slowly tore his gaze away from the glowing screen. Lance stared at the trainee before him, staring before narrowing his eyes. "What is it this time?" He growled, "Moving me again? I hope you finally figured out where you're going to put me this time, I hate bein- wait. You're not one of them, are you?"

Lance closed his laptop, drumming his fingers on its closed lid while watching the trainee. "Hm, maybe... Come here." It was less of a request and more of a demand. The older hunter reached out and snatched at Melvin's coat, pulling it to stare at the emblem on the back. "Life? Maybe you'll be useful after all," Lance said as he released Mevlin. He leaned back, the drumming changing to a tapping. "I was expecting a Mist, but you'll do. You'll do. What orders to you have? Just to report to me, or are you here to run more of those damnable tests on me like an experimental minipet?"

The tone was one of authority, where there was a luxury in getting upset with being moved about. This sparked Melvin's attention, but with the man sitting, he couldn't see where his coat was. Why didn't they give him more information with these tasks?!

Standing at attention, he was then yanked over, making the trainee hold the edge of the bed to balance himself before he was released. Asking would have had the same result, but he supposed that most people went by coats just as much as he did.

Brushing his jacket, he stood up fully once again, not more to the man's side. "Yes. I'm in Life." Was there a Mist job that he couldn't do? "I don't have any orders. They just told me to report to you. They don't let me handle their experiments just yet." Or at all. He handed over the clipboard. "Are you a Mist?"

The smile that crossed Lance's lips wasn't a particularly nice one. It was one that belonged on a cat that just ate the canary. "Well enough, well enough. Perhaps there is some use for you yet." He paused, his gaze having wandered off to the side. It refocused itself onto the trainee, sharpened.

He blinked, and the predatory look was gone. "Hm? Yes. My name is Lance, I'm the current assistant to Ar- to the Mist division," he corrected with a wince. "Please excuse me, I'm not... exactly in the best of health considering. Anyway. Give me your clipboard. You're new here, aren't you?"

"I've been here for about a month." He corrected, but it was pretty much as green as they came aside from those just out of their pods. Melvin just didn't like having it pointed out because it always came off as if he didn't learn anything before he was in a pod and that being 23 didn't even count for anything.

He passed the clipboard over. "It's nice to meet you. My name is Melvin Wood." Why was Lance looking at him that way?

"A month? I see." Lance took the clipboard and began to read it, removing the papers and flipping them over to double-check the back. "I take it you know your way around here pretty well? You're a Life, so you should know the labs well enough, but if anyone catches you there..." His voice dropped towards the end as he took a pencil and began to scribble on the back of the sheet. "Left, right, then... There."

Lance re-arranged the papers and stacked them, returning the clipboard to Melvin. The top sheet was the same one, but directly beneath it was the map and some instructions Lance wrote. "Follow that map to reach what used to be the Mist Lounge. There's still a giant hole in the wall. Just go through it and cross the room to reach my quarters. There's going to be a box in there. Bring it here and don't open it. Don't look obvious, either. Just act important. And don't let anyone else get the box, either."

"Well enough." He answered, not bothering to mention that he got lost twice before getting here. This man was a figure of authority in the Mist department, and it was good to at least get some points with them in the off chance he could somehow affect his time in the Life division, for better or worse. That and he had little choice in rejecting a order given to him to help this man, not that he seemed bad at all. A simple errand, though he looked up when Lance mentioned a hole in his wall.

Taking the map, he looked it over. "Okay. I'll be back." He took the clipboard and headed off. He hadn't been near the Mist section all that much, and he had first reached a dead end hallway near a supply closet, then he managed to find a bathroom next to some vending machines in another hallway, before he eventually found the lounge. If it wasn't for the hole, he might have passed it.

Stepping in, he looked around. The room was small, with a bookshelf, a few trophies, and a desk piled with papers and odds and ends. The other side had a cot against the wall. He had to wonder if this was his room or he spent so much time working that he put a cot in for quick naps.

He spotted the box on the desk. Walking over, he picked it up gently, setting it atop the clipboard, and then glanced at the map again. Luckily, after he reached a certain point, he managed his way back in a straight line, not looking at anyone in fear they would stop him or give him another errand to do.

He returned, offering the assistant the box. It wasn't heavy, and Melvin had to resist the urge to do the present test and shake it to figure what was inside.

As Melvin wandered the hallways, Lance was watching his progress through his computer. Each wrong turn received a wince from the hunter, followed by a facepalm. Lance considered calling another hunter to rescue Melvin. The Mist Lounge was built for privacy and secrecy, but with the recent additions and attacks... It wasn't exactly a secret anymore, what with the giant hole revealing the main area. Lance sighed, closing his laptop at that. "I ******** it up, didn't I?" He murmured quietly, scowling down at himself. If he didn't --

The man snapped those thoughts off, staring at nothing until the trainee returned. "Finally. Give it here," Lance ordered, taking the box. He paused as he was about to open it, looking around quickly. "Did anyone follow you? See anyone? Whatever you see here forget about it. Understand? Not a word of this to anyone."

What was inside was... disappointing, to say the least. Was Lance too embarrassed about looking through a bright pink notebook that it required so much secrecy? Or was it the decorative teddy bears on it? The rainbow that somebody at somepoint carefully made on the cover using glitter glue?

Either way, the man was now muttering to himself while flipping quickly through the pages, stopping when he came to words written in bright pink text. He stared at them before he began to hold the notebook at different angles before ultimately giving up and continuing to flip.

"Got it. Clipboard." Lance said, holding out his hand for Melvin's clipboard again. On the same page as the map he began to quickly copy down some instructions. "Take this to Lab #9. Nobody's using it. In about three minutes the hunter using it is going to leave the room for about five or seven minutes -- that's your window of opportunity. Go in, close the door, open the box." Lance tapped the box Melvin had brought to him, resealed and closed after he removed the notebook.

"Inside there's a sealed tube and several bottles. You can open one end of the tube. Pour it in the following order: red, pink, purple, orange. Whatever you do, don't breathe the fumes in. Seal the tube when you're done, shake it, bring it back here. Got all that?"

Melvin watched the Mist Assistant pull out, of all things, the frilliest notebook Melvin had seen since 3rd grade. The only thing that topped it was a Lisa Frank notebook and squishy stickers. Rather confused, he watched the man open it, and Melvin had a vague feeling he just helped the man collect someone teenage girl's diary. What text he could see was in blinding, gel-ink pink, which left him too dazed to even make out the words. Lance managed well enough, jotting down a few things before shutting the box and handing it over. He expected to be told to put it back in his room (why did this guy have a girl's book in his room?), but was then given a list of instructions.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it....

Melvin was already hearing a certain them song start in his head.

Just 3 minutes till. At least he knew where Lab 9 was, and he took the box with the look of someone not knowing what was going on, but was now thrown into action without time to think. Taking the paper, he then nodded. Oh crap! Why did he have to mix this in the labs? "Uh, got it."

He started to move, looking wide-eyed.

Why can't he do it?

I don't know! Why am I on a time limit?!

That notebook is an ugly color.

Saliva! I don't have time to think of this. Help me remember this.

Lab 9. Lab 9. 3 minutes. Lab 9.

Why did he get the sinking feeling he was doing something he wasn't supposed to?

Melvin arrived and checked to see that no one was inside. Stepping in, he went to the side table, opened the box, and breathed out. The tub was atop the colored vials, and he took those out before sorting them in order. "Red. Pink. Orange. Purple." Wait. "Purple. Orange?"

He felt his heart race as he opened one end of the tube. Oh s**t. He hoped this was right, but he pulled out his instructions. Right. It was Purple than orange!

Breathing out, he started to mix in order, turning his head as it started to fume, and coughing once when it still seemed to vapor all over the place. Once done, he looked at the instructions. It said bring the tube back. What about the box and the empty tubes??? It was evidence, right? Oh crap. He didn't have time!

He gathered everything into the box, then walked out. Returning with tube and all back to Lance, looking both pale and jumpy. "Here. I did it." And now his stomach was turning because of it. Hopefully it wasn't the fumes.

The notebook was nowhere to be found when Melvin arrived. It was gone; simple as that. "Good." Lance took the box and opened it, picking the tube up. Carefully, slowly he rolled it from side to side before turning it, narrowing his eyes. "s**t, where is it... Frikkin' containment t- ah! Right, right." Lance twisted both ends, activating the runes etched onto the surface. As they began to glow, Lance closed the box to prevent the light from broadcasting. It wouldn't do either of them any good to be caught at this point.

"Good, you did good... Marvin? Martin? Trainee. Whatever." Lance shrugged, looking the life trainee up and down. "You didn't disturb anything? Break anything? Breathe anything in?"

Melvin watched the tube glow. It seemed everything at this place had runes on it, and he really had to ask about them at some point. Not to Lance of course, who seemed busy with whatever secret project he wasn't bothering to let him in on despite doing all the work.

"It's Melvin." Where all superiors this way? They either referred to him as a trainee or a body. Meatbag probably was going to be thrown around at some point, and he wouldn't have been surprised.

"I don't think so. Nothing was broken when I put it in the box." He was sure he was careful. "...and I tried not to breathe anything in. It was fuming a lot." There wasn't exactly time to turn on a vent or found a protective mask.

Unfortunately for Melvin, division leaders tended to avoid learning trainee names. They tended to have too short of a lifespan to justify learning names. With the Mist division, more tended to transfer out than in. Sun trainees tended to make up the coffins. As for the rest... Lance didn't bother thinking about. It made it easier to sleep at night.

"Fuming? What color? Did you see sparkles? Anything affecting your vision? No, wait, you have goggles on. Good." Lance looked from Melvin to the room and back, on the lookout for other hunters and any changes in the one in front of him. "Any odd feelings? Something out of place?"

What the hell did Lance just make him make??!!!

"Purple, thick, fumes....I didn't see sparkles. I was trying not to get too close to it." It had been rather strong those. "Smelled bad, and the tube got warm when I mixed everything." Meaning it gave off heat in some chemical reaction. What was he mixing.

The fact that Lance was asking for how he felt first came off as concern - until Melvin reminded himself that this guy didn't even remember his name. "I don't...feel weird." His heart was racing from just doing that timed task, but he held out his hands and turned them over, looking around. He took a moment to think if he felt weird. Did he feel weird? He was freaking out now that he wasn't sure.

"What is in that tube?" He had to ask. "Is it tonic?"

Lance shrugged. "It can get that way. Sometimes. Like it is now between myself and --" he broke off, raising a hand and waving it. "Nevermind. That's not important, and I'd probably be boring you. At least the power wasn't in the fumes itself. It's what it's used for that matters. Or maybe not." A mirthless grin crossed his lips before he shook his head.

"The tube. It should be done..." He reached into the box, pulling the tube out. The runes were still glowing bright. Experimentally he held the tube up to his ear and shook it, listening closely. The tube was twisted open and he looked in, grinning before he twisted it closed. "No toxic. Or tonics. Do you have gloves?"

Melvin really wished Lance wouldn't dismiss that he wouldn't be interested it. "I'm not easily made bored." Lance was the only person who was actually letting him do some actual work that involved using the labs, even if it was suspicious as hell.

As for gloves, he held up his hands were he wore a pair of black gloves. "I always do. I have another pair." He said, patting his pocket of his coat. "If I need another type, I can take some from the labs."
