Hayden plucked at the strings of his Cherry Red Fender Starcaster. "Is this really for me? I get to keep it?" Echelon nodded at him, "It's all yours. I know you had trouble with the other instruments you tried, so I thought you should be able to have something special to call your own." Echo patted him proudly on the head, "Are you going to her a name?" Hayden strummed a long clear 'G' chord. "Maggie," He whispered. She transitioned smoothly to an 'A' and sang happily to him. Echo smiled and locked his fingers. "Are you nervous? I'm sorry I can't be at your first public performance, but I can't back out of my own gig." Hayden shook his head, "I'll be alright! With my new lucky charm, nothing'll go wrong." He set Maggie gently to the side, jumped on to Echelon's lap, and gave him a hug. "Thank you so much, Daddy!" Echo smiled and hugged him back. "You'll do great. I know it." Hayden looked over to the corner where Lupus sat, "Are you gonna come, Dad?" Lupus glanced up, but shook his head and went back to dragging his claws along the floor. Hayden's heart sank a little, neither of his parents would be there to support him. He turned to the other corner where is big brother sat. "You'll come. Won't you, Ashey?"

Ashen sat in the corner, opposite his father Lupus, watching his family. His little brother jumped around all happy to have a new present from their father, Echelon. Wow, could you make it any more obvious who the favorite child is here! Ashen felt like screaming. Even Lupus, the one parent that didn't really pay attention to either of them, was acknowledging Hayden's excitement. It shouldn't surprise me though, he shook his head as his brother hugged their Dad. They barely notice me as it is and now that we're older it's only gotten worse. It'll only be a matter of time before they forget I ever existed. He steamed silently in his corner as Lupus shook his head at Hayden. You should at least care for me a little more Father. I'm more like you and Hayden is more like Dad. Doesn't that mean anything to you? Clearly though, it didn't. Ashen always referred to Lupus as 'Father' and Echelon as 'Dad'. It just seemed like the right fit to him for their personalities. He curled his tail around his paws and hunched his shoulders, making himself as small as possible. Make me hard to see. he told the shadows around him. They eagerly complied. The shadows are my only friends, Ashen thought. They listened to his every word, came when they were called, and left him alone when he didn't want to be bothered. He looked up when he heard Hayden call out to him, using his annoying nickname for him - "Ashey" - he hated it. He was about to say "no" that he would not like to go to a stupid concert, especially if Hayden was going to be performing. But out of he saw Dad out of the corner of his eye give him the look. It said "You are going to go and keep an eye on your little brother." Ashen sighed and rolled his eyes. "Yeah, sure, I'll go."

Hayden smiled at his big brother, oblivious to the shadows that tried to hide Ashen. This is gonna be great! Maybe they can all come next time...but at least Ashen is gonna be there. Echelon took him under one arm and Maggie in the other. "Come on, we've gotta get you ready for the stage!" Hayden giggled as his daddy carried him up the stairs. As he helped him brush is hair and pick out a cool outfit, Echo told him a few rules he should follow when on the stage. "Firstly, don't show weakness. Crowds are easily swayed by your appearance. If you walk out a snappy dresser, but are shaking at the knees, they're gonna eat you up." He tapped his nose to show he was playing, but didn't let it take away from how serious he was. "However, if you swag out with nothing but jeans and a raggy shirt, but show nothing other than pure confidence, they will respect you and give you a chance to play and show off your stuff." Echo dug through Hayden's clothes until he found a pair of nice jeans and a torn t-shirt. "More important than all of that, have fun." Echelon sat on the floor and pulled Hayden onto his lap. "More important than pleasing the audience, which you do want to do, is please yourself. Make sure you walk off the stage knowing you did your best and have the most fun possible doing just that. Got it?" Hayden grinned, "Have fun? That's easy! I always have fun!" Echo laughed, thumped him on that back, and gave him a thumbs up. "Have a good show!" Hayden laughed and returned the thumbs up. "Have a good show!" He echoed.

Lupus looked at the ground where four new grooves ruined the floor. Oops... He moved the rug on the floor to cover it, but ended up exposing another part of the flooring that had been abused by his claws. After a few moments of rearranging all the furniture, all his claw marks were well hidden and he decided that he was hungry. He rose to leave the room when he noticed Ashen sitting across the room. He blinked at him. Should I say something...? He cocked his head, He does look kind of like me...I've never seen anything that looks like me before...This one isn't as jumpy as the other, but according to Echo, they both belong to us. Lupus shook the hair from his eyes. Little Echo and Little Lupus...it feels weird...I want to protect them. Both of them, but I don't know how I should interact with them...Should I tell Ashen what I think? Or would it hurt the little guy's feelings...? He started to open his mouth, but closed it and headed into the kitchen. It's strange, I don't want to disappoint either of the little ones. I felt terrible turning Hayden down, and I feel worse for not being able to even talk to Ashen...What would we even begin to talk about? Lupus grabbed a sandwich out of the fridge and ate it without really tasting it. He was too deep in thought.

Ashen made a face as his father and brother turned their backs to go upstairs. He could hear them a few minutes later, upstairs laughing and junk. Haha ha, Ashen thought sarcastically, I'm Echo and I love Hayden more because he's a talented musician just like me. And I'm Hayden a half wit who can't even communicate with shadows. Morons the lot of them... He was about to wonder off, he still had a few hours before the stupid concert started. I might as well spend this time planning. If I'm going to be forced to go to this...this...performance. It's going to go off with a bang! Ashen smirked mischievously. He was just about to get up and leave when he noticed his father staring at him. No matter how much Ashen said he disliked his parents, he couldn't help liking them a little. He looked up to Lupus and hoped to one day be as skilled as him with Shadow Manipulation. He tried to imitate his father, sitting up a little straighter and staring back at him defiantly. Ashen's tail flicked in excitement when Lupus opened his mouth but then he shut it again and walked out of the room. "Fine then..." Ashen muttered.
"Nice talking to you too."

At that, he jumped up and headed for the backyard. Meet me at the cave, he told the shadows. They vanished just as quickly as they appeared. It was early evening and the sun was still shinning. Ashen slunk across the ground as low as he could, in attempt to be as far away from the burning rays as possible. Like his father, Lupus, the sun irritated Ashen's skin. It felt as though he was burning. But he didn't have it as bad as his father. One time he saw Lupus get caught in the sun, it looked as though someone had lit him on fire. For Ashen it just felt like he was way to close to an open flame rather then actually standing in it. Out of the corner of his eye he saw the curtains on the window lift. He didn't worry about getting in trouble for sneaking out though. Echelon was still up stairs and Lupus wouldn't dare go out outside with the sun still this high.

Behind some bushes, there was a hole in the fence just wide enough for Ashen to squeeze through. He wiggled around until he was all the way through them trotted off to the small forest they had behind their house. The shadows the trees made felt nice and cooling on his fur. A few weeks ago, Ashen had discovered a small burrow hidden away under a tangled mass of roots. After a few days of digging, he had made it into the perfect little den just for himself. He had all of his favorite things hidden in there like books about shadows and the underworld, music, and a comfortable pillow to lie on. He was in the process of making another tunnel to a neighboring tree to add on an extra room.
However, that would have to wait for another day, right now Ashen had work to do.

Echelon left Hayden's room to get ready for his own show and Hayden could feel all of his confidence leave with him. No matter how many times his daddy smiled at him, or patted his head, or said how great he would do, he still didn't feel like a great person. He looked at his reflection the in the tiny mirror that hung on his wall, and pulled the shirt Echo gave him over his head. The reflection said, "Look how awesome I am! We're gonna kill this!" But all he could think was, This shirt is too big for me. And that's how he felt. Like he was trying to fill one of his daddy's shirts, but he was just a kit, too small. Hayden crossed his eyes and stuck out his tongue. There, that looked more like him. He sighed and headed back downstairs to retrieve Maggie. He plucked a few strings, but she sounded so sad he couldn't continue. Tightening her strap, he slipped Maggie into her bag and slung her on his back. He quietly slipped into the kitchen, pulled a sandwich out the fridge, and was about to leave when he saw Lupus. He was staring with great intensity out the window, watching the sun go down. As the sun shrunk and the sky got darker and darker, creepy black shadows started to gather at his dad's feet. The darkness swelled immensely around him as soon as the sun disappeared. Just before Lupus vanished, a strange smile crept over his lips and he said something, but Hayden didn't quite catch it. He was about to say something, but Lupus suddenly dispersed in a flash of shadows.

"Bye, Dad. Have fun..." He'd never seen him do that before, Hayden really wished he could do that, but he knew running away wouldn't help his confidence problem. Hurrying out the back door, he climbed over the fence and crept into the forest. He liked it back there. No one ever seemed to be there, so it was easier to be alone with just his thoughts. He headed to about the center of the crowd of trees and started climbing the biggest one. Once he reached his favorite branch, the biggest thickest one, he sat back and pulled out Maggie. Then, he took a deep breath and started playing the song he'd been working on. Hayden hadn't told anyone about it, it was his secret. As he played flawlessly, he accidently looked at his watch. One hour till show time. His pick hit the strings wrong and Maggie shouted angrily at him. "Sorry," he whispered. This is gonna be a lot harder than I thought.

Ashen plotted quietly in his den until he had a sutible plan. He glanced at the red and black glow in the dark clock hanging on his wall. He still had one hour still the show. I suppose I can work some more on my tunnel then, he thought. For thirty minutes he dug in his tunnel. When he was finished, his paws were sore and he was covered in sweat and dirt. Going back to his main room, he cleaned himself up best he could. "Guess it's time to go to that dumb concert." he told himself. But just as he was about to bolt out of his little hobbit hole he heard a strange noise. Peaking just his head out, he glanced up to find the source of the noise. It was Hayden.

He narrowed his eyes. That little brat! Who does he think he is showing up at my front door. Ashen liked to think of his den as his house since he didn't really like living with his parents and all their roommates. Cover him and myself, he can't find out about my secret location. Instantly he was covered. He heard his brother yelp in suprise as he was surrounded by darkness. Ashen wished he could shadow travel like his father, but his gifts didn't expand that far. Maybe one day Lupus could teach him. No, he quickly shook that idea from his mind. His father would never do something like that. He already didn't want anything to do with his kits. As soon as he was a few yards away from the cave he requested the shadows to disperce.

"HEY!" He shouted at his brother. "This is my spot! You and that stupid guitar get down right now!" He sat down and glowered until his brother sat in front of him. "What do you think you're doing? You can just go anywhere you please! Shouldn't you be with Dad or something getting read for your stupid show?" He got up and started pacing around Hayden in a circle, shadows dancing around his paws, just the way they did with Lupus. "I don't even want to go to your dumb performance anyway, but Dad is forcing me to go to keep an eye on you." Ashen was on a roll now so he let his emotions flow freely. "And why do you have to act all happy and stupid all the time. We all know your talented, you don't have to show off all the time. It's clear that you're Father and Dad's favorite so why don't you tone it down a bit, huh?! You know I don't like you so stop acting like you think I'm your best friend!"

Hayden cried out in surprise as the world around him turned dark. "Ashen..." He said bitterly. He slouched and plucked a few minor chords as he waited for the shadows to leave. Throwing Maggie once again onto his back, he slid down the tree and sat in front of his brother. Hayden rolled his eyes at his brother's accusations, "As you may have seen, I was practicing in MY tree. I am ready for the show and I was waiting for you." He watched his big brother stomp around. "I don't need to be watched and you couldn't be more obvious about not wanting to come." He grit his teeth, "Would you rather I mope in the corner like you do?! Have you even tried to play anything?! All you do is complain!" Even though he hated getting angry, it felt good letting off a little steam and it helpped to ease his nerves a little bit. "You think it would be better to fight in front of our dads?!" He leapt to his feet, "Can't you see the way they act around each other?! It's as obvious as the fact that you hate me! We were a mistake! They're both trying to make the best of their accident! I'm only trying to help them see we're not such a bad thing! The only problem is you're! Not! Helping!" He turned his back to his now silent older sibling. "Now let's go!" Without waiting, Hayden marched off.

It made Ashen’s blood boil even more to have his brother yell back at him. And what was all this about him claiming it was HIS tree? He snorted a harsh laugh when his brother said that. If only he knew of the intricate tunnels he had and was planning. This tree had been his before his brother was even old enough to be allowed out of the house. But I can’t tell him that, Ashen thought, only half listening to his brothers ranting. I’d mark it…but…no that wouldn’t work. Then he’d wonder why. I know! He grinned as his brother went on telling Ashen that all he did was complain, which was a total lie. He rarely talked at all, so how could he complain?
Shadows, when I leave, cover this tree from now on whenever someone who isn’t me comes near. There that should keep any nosy people away.

He looked back up to find his brother walking away. He had heard everything he said, even if he pretended not to. He stood up and puffed his chest out. "How dare you walk away from me!" He shouted running after him. "I’m not finished with you, you brat!" Ashen threw a look over his shoulder and watched as the shadows slowly consumed the tree the farther he got away. "HAYDEN!" Ashen yelled angrely when his brother continued to ignore him. He could see the fence of their backyard coming up in the distance. In a last ditch effort to release his frustration on his brother he picked up a small stone and hurrled it at Hayden. Ashen missed by a few inches. The stone bounced off a boulder and flew harmlessly against the fence. But by the way Hayden froze in mid step, Ashen knew he thought the rock had bounced off of his guitar.
"Don't ever walk away from me while I'm speaking to you." Ashen whispered menecingly, as he walked by his brother.

Squeezing through the fence, Ashen raced inside and sat waiting impationely by the front door. Father was gone already, he always disapeared at night to do who knows what. However, Ashen could still hear his other dad upstairs getting ready for his own concert. Echo would be driving them to Hayden's concert then going to his own.
All I have to do now is wait. Ashen smirked as shadows curled around his paws.

Hayden almost had a conniption as the rock barely missed him and Maggie. He watched Ashen dash ahead, "Whatever you say, 'brother'..." He muttered to himself. He stalled going inside until he saw his Daddy heading downstairs. "Ready to head out?" It was easy to see how proud he was. He patted both of them on the head and hulled his gear out the door. "Come, the stage waits for no one...the audience is even less patient." It was a favorite saying of his, something he always said before he headed out the door to a concert. Hayden made sure Maggie was securely in her bag and hurried after Echelon.

Echelon dropped the two kits off back stage. Hayden watched as Echo drove off, once again taking his confidence with him. He took a deep breath and headed to the backstage entrance. A large man, clad in black, leaned over and asked his business. "I'm the 9 o' clock." This one guy didn't scare him, even if he was 5 times his size. The bodyguard spoke into his radio, a fuzzy answer came, and he opened the door for Hayden. A very short man, hurried out. "There you are, kid!" He spoke rapidly with a cigar hanging out the side of his mouth. Hayden thought, for a moment, he walked into some kind of movie. "Come on, kid! Don't be nervous! I'll show you to your room!" His voice only got louder as he threw an arm over Hayden's shoulders and dragged him inside. "You know, kid, I was the first one to let your daddy on stage! Isn't that neat! So, of course when he called and told me about you, kid, I couldn't say no!" The man continued rambling and jostling Hayden about. All he could think was, Keep walking, don't pass out, don't pass out! The man seemed like he was trying to help, but he was only making it worse. The shoes the man expected Hayden to fill kept getting bigger and bigger, and he feared that he might trip over himself if he kept trying to wear them.
The door closed behind Hayden and the man was gone.

Alone in his changing room, Hayden took Maggie out of her bag and set her on a pretty fur lined guitar stand that sat in the corner. I just need to close my eyes for a few minutes... he told himself, lying down on the only couch in the room. He shoved his palms into his eyes and tried to rub the sudden exaustion that threatened to put him to sleep, but it didn't work. He sat up feeling really old. I'm too young to be doing this...I'm not ready yet... He stood up. That's it! He could tell the guy he wasn't feeling good. Maybe they could put someone else on stage. Hayden's hand clasped the doorknob, but he couldn't bring himself to turn it. I can't...I'd let everyone down. I'd let Daddy down... His hand dropped to his side. Maybe if he meditated or something, just for a few minutes. He turned to go sit down again, and the door flung open. "Stage is ready, kid! Let's go!" Hayden barely had time to grab Maggie before he was being dragged away again. "Good luck, kid!" The man loudly stage whispered and disappeared, leaving him alone in the dark. Hayden's last thought was, I wonder where Ashen is... and the curtains retreaded, leaving him and the stage open to the blinding lights and the staring audience.

Ashen grimaced as his dad pat him on the head. After they were dropped off back stage Hayden totally ignored his brother, which Ashen had no problem with. The less people noticed him, or paid attention to him the better. He watched as Hayden spoke to the guard standing outside the door before being dragged off by some guy who looked like he was a bit confused about which era he was in. Ashen decided to get a good view of his surroundings in case he needed to make a run for it. He walked all the way around the building slowly. The back was fairly empty just a couple tour busses and the employees cars. In the front it was wide open to the road with a pretty large group of people in line to get in. Not enough people to be an audience for a rock stars concert, Ashen noted, but not a small enough audience to watch a guy sing lonely songs at the local pub either. But he wasn’t too worried about the crowed getting in his way though so he didn’t give them much more thought then that.

There were guards scattered far and few so he also didn’t worry about that. By the time his prank was over it would be dark enough that he could slip, unnoticed into the shadows like his father did when he was hiding. But…I don’t think he does that much hiding at night. Ashen thought as he headed back towards the door Hayden had disappeared through. I should follow him one night and see what he does, I’m so small he would never notice me. He added that to his list of things to do and walked casually up to the tall burly man. "Excuse me good man"! He said, trying to sound more adult like, "I believe you let my brother in here a few minutes ago." The man just stared at him, his eyebrow raised as if to say Nice try kid. Not getting what he wanted right away chipped away at Ashen’s mask. He was trying to be polite, something that did not come easy to him, and this guy certainly wasn’t helping. "That means I’m with him," He said, his voice giving away his annoyance. The man still made no move to let him in.

At that moment a couple of workers walked over pushing a large speaker on wheels.
"Hey! We got this back up speaker, can we take it through here?" They asked, trying to keep the huge thing from tipping over. "Yeah go right ahead," the guard said, holding the door open for them. They walked in while Ashen sat in stony silence. At the last second before the doors closed he made his move. Cover that idiots face. He told the shadows. When the man started swearing Ashen dashed in just as the door shut, barely missing his tail. He dashed around quickly, his shadows concealing him so he wouldn’t have to worry about being questioned. He took note of where the electrical box is, the robes that controlled the curtains, and all the exits. He walked past the green rooms as well, scowling when he saw the one that read Hayden Love. Now all he had to do was wait until after his brother had done a few songs, then things would start to get very interesting.
