Melvin was left in the cafeteria, reading a book on minipets - or trying. He was more or less glaring at it, a few pieces of paper set beside him and tapping Saliva as he thought. He was learning, but as of right now, he needed to get a golem and start getting subjects to learn about them up close. Books were good for foundations and to get past the questions he had that were already answered, but he could read at night. Right now, he needed to see how much clearance and tape he had to get through to using this 'golem' and where he could go about getting minipets.
Tapping his pen over and over, he flipped another page, not sure how to go about this list. His studies would be dependent on what TYPE of minipet he got, as there seemed to be a entire kingdom much like their own but with odd names like Schinks and Lepus guides - which only made him think of Lupus. Damn House.
He then, out of habit, popped the end of the pen in his mouth.
Can you stop biting me?
Melvin paused a moment, before looking down at what exactly he was putting in his mouth.
"Ahh!" He said, taking the pen out and sticking his tongue out, not sure what to do before he reached for the napkin dispenser on the cafeteria table and wiped his tongue. Ew. Ew. Ew. Ew. EWWWW!!!

It was impossible to ignore screams in a public area like the cafeteria. The labs? Sure, those could be passed off as someone ******** up or...uh..was. The dorms could be somewhat ignored as well. But the cafeteria? Now that was something odd. Suddenly Melvin had a visitor or rather one who cared enough to ask what the hell his problem was. Candace leaned over his shoulder with her brow raised, a very curious look clear on her face. "Problem? Find something unusual in your food?" She glanced at the book and grimaced. "Don't tell me someone is pulling a Julie.." Not again. Please. Oh god no.

Melvin looked up, a little bit of paper napkin stuck to his protruding tongue, before he picked it off. "No. I just forgot my pen was my weapon." He admitted, too surprised by her sudden and very close appearance to say anything else other than the truth. With her this close, he slowly started to lean in his chair to give him more space between her. "What's pulling a Julie?" Whatever it was, it seemed bad.

"What? Did it explode all over you?" She teased, moving away to turn and sit on the edge of the table with her feet on the chair beside Melvin. Ah, his question. She should've expected that. He was new, right? He wouldn't have known her. Candace chuckled and smiled almost sadly, rubbing the back of her neck. "A very, very nice girl who is no longer with us. One night she was caught chopping up minipets and cooking them. Blew up the kitchen. It was a mess...so if you're not doing that, why've you got this boo--oh." She had leaned forward to peek at the back of his coat to see what division the boy was, spotting the life branches immediately. Right. That's why he had that book. Studying like a good boy. Cute.
Her smile brightened and she leaned back on one hand, offering the other out to shake. "I'm Candace, it's nice to meet youuuuuu..?"

Melvin just stared at Candace and her offered hand. The way she introduced herself had been rather strange. "I don't want to eat them. That would be disgusting." It was bad enough they were near him, let alone IN him. He was still unsettled by the fact he had a Fear Bond with his weapon. Ingesting a Fear creature was about as appealing as slurping down slugs.
Reaching out with one soft-gloved hand, he shook her own. "Melvin Wood. It's nice to meet.. " He paused. She was his senior, at least by some amount of time to be talking about others no longer here. She also could see his coat and see what division she was in. That meant she probably....
Melvin shot up so quickly his chair nearly fell back. Setting his hands down, he leaning to check her back and see if he could spot any stripes. "You're not a trainee!" He said, hoping he got that right. Right? RIGHT!
Standing back straight, he looked at her with intense, bright-blue eyes. "Do you know anything about golems?" His voice was a bit louder than he expected, but he had been racking his head trying to figure out how he was going to go about finding out about them.

Uhhhh why was he just staring? At least he agreed minipets were friends, not food. What worried Candace was that had been the one time they'd caught her and there was no telling how many other times she had butchered and cooked minipets and no one had been the wiser. It was both a horrifying and nauseating thought. Candace hoped she never accidentally ingested a minipet pie or something. Ugh. Thankfully these thoughts were dashed away by him taking her hand and introducing himself. "Melvin."
He suddenly stood with no warning whatsoever and Candace leaned back, startled. What the hell!? Of course she wasn't a trainee! She earned this! Not that..she really felt she deserv--no. No, she did deserve it. She totally deserved it. She worked hard for this. Missing Hunters happened all the time...how..how could they have expected her to be able to take care of that many injured Hunters all on her own in the middle of all of that.
No, she couldn't blame anyone but herself. s**t.
His question won him an icy glare. What the ******** kind of question was that?! He was Life, right? Someone must have put him up to it. ******** trolls. "Are you trying to be funny?" Uh oh. Candace was not happy. Abort! Abort!

Melvin wasn't sure he touched on some hunter social faux pas, and he eased back from the glare she shot back at him. Something was wrong, and he had started it. However, his desire to have his own project was far greater than some huffy glare he was getting, and if he was touching on a strange subject, he'd have to know why.
"No. I need to use a golem to get minipets." He continued to look at her. "Why would golems be funny?" Was he tricked? Did H just off-handedly mention golems in way to make his life difficult or to alienate him among the other techs? He didn't expect the division leader to be that cruel.

A golem for minipets. Right. That kind of explained the book. "We have minipets in the labs. Lots of them. Do you need me to show you where? I'm more than happy to." No golems. No. Candace was not touching another golem until she absolutely had to. This was one an 'absolutely had to' situation. She crossed her arms and eyed Melvin with clear suspicion. Why? He really didn't know? Was he trying to pry information out of ******** it.
Candace climbed off the table, straightened out her clothes, and shook her head. "If you really don't know then don't worry about it." She mumbled while dismissively waving a hand near her head. She wasn't going to get into it with a guy she didn't even know. Candace turned to walk away, bristling with irritation.

He reached out, scooping up the books he had and the papers before following her. "Wait." He followed behind. Luckily being tall with long legs meant he could catch up.
"I know where the minipets are, but I need some for my own research. I have to catch them. I need to know where the golems are. No one else tells me anything." He moved forward, turning into her path to look at her.
"Please. I'd really appreciate it if you'd show me." She didn't seem the type to volunteer, and was rather upset over the mention of golems. "I'd make it up to you."

Nope. Not waiting. Candace kept walking, determined to get away from the cafeteria and away from Melvin. If someone was setting her up she was not going to play their game. She was not going to throw a fit, or cry, or whine, or do anything of the sort. No, she was just going to calmly leave and not cause any kind of scene. Oh, good. He knew where the minipets were. His own research? Whatever. Didn't make a difference to her. Candace couldn't care less about minipets other than that they were often adorable.
No one else tells me anything.
That certainly got Candace's attention! She stopped not just because Melvin was now in front of her but because of his words as well. She was still frowning though with less hostility than before. She hated that. People who withheld useful ******** information why couldn't they just be ******** helpful and not make everyone run around blindly and make a damn fool of themselves ********! But she still didn't look like she was about to just jump up and tell him she was going to help.
She sighed, ruffling at her hair and turning away again. At least this time she stayed in place. She just had to show him? She didn't have to..actually...
But she'd made such an idiot of herself last time she'd been in that place. Candace bit her lip and closed her eyes, silently counting to ten. "How would you make it up to me..."

Melvin was shuffling the books to keep them from spilling over, and looked up to see that she wasn't just turning around and walking away, but staying in place. He had her attention, and she saw that there could be an offer on the table. He knew nothing about this woman, and he didn't know how well his offer would be. He'd test it out first, and see if he could haggle.
"If you have duty work, I can do that for a month." He did enough random work anyways. It would give her free time to....do her nails or pick out her clothes.

Damn. Someone who actually liked their work. Must be nice, but considering that she was here longer than him, they probably let her do more than random errands.
His eyes wandered, trying to pick anything from her appearance that might help him. The only thing he gathered was that she was dressed well. "I don't have leave yet, but when I do, I can get you something." He didn't know what, but women always had a wish list. Always.

He had her attention now. There was an amused gleam in her eye as she fought back a smirk. He'd get her something, huh? Anything she wanted? Something nice? A certain division leader game to mind. She wouldn't have to do much for Melvin..maybe wait a few months while he saved up for what she asked of him, help him catch some minipets with a golem.
Okay. She'd play.
"Something?" She smiled sweetly. "As in like...off island? Anything I want?"

The gleam made him nervous, but she was paying attention now. "As long as I can actually get it. No Heart of the Ocean or Plutonium if you can help it. I don't have those connections or that sort of money." He only just got paid for that weapon experiment and trainee pay was the worst.
Be gentle... He silently hoped she just wanted a pretty dress.
