Melvin was proactive, and for that reason, when something didn't sit right with him, he figured out how to fix it. He had spent a few weeks in the labs and had gotten nowhere with the techs. They were lazy as far as appearances went, and the ones that did work only called him over to fetch beakers, coffee, or to pick up the work from the printer. More and more he was wasting his time in the stock room climbing up to pick up another box of printer paper than he was actually working in the labs, and it was grating him the wrong way. He was in the LIFE LABS! He was in this division. Why wasn't he actually learning and making an actual difference? He was sick of sparring and all the reconstruction work was done. It was time to actually DO something with the fraction college degree he had. What? It still counted!
It was already mentioned that his division leader was a man who went by the name "H", and Cassandra Norris had mentioned that he was a well-enough guy if not a tad creepy. It only took a few raised eyebrows by the techs and a question till he was directed to his office.
It wasn't long till he moved to the door, taking a breath and bring up a logical argument in his mind of what he would say before he went over. The door was open, but he stood at the door frame and knocked. "Excuse me? Are you Mr. H?" Best to be sure he wasn't wasting his time with someone else.

"Doctor, trainee. Anybody can be a mere mister, you know." The man hadn't bothered to look up, his hands and eyes busy tracing odd symbols and arrays on what looked to be a blueprint of sorts. Pausing he looking up and smiled, "And you'll come to find that I don't settle for being a mere anything."

Oh s**t. This was just like when he called his first professor freshman year by Mister as well. Why didn't he KNOW this automatically? Anyone who ran a division in the research department had to have his doctorate in something. He was sure there wasn't a course of study for this specific area of science, but he was pretty sure most if not all of them had some prior background in a friend of science to some degree.
"Doctor H." He corrected, showing that he understood and slowly walked in.
You are really great at first impressions.
Yeah. I'm really nailing it. He answered back, agreeing her this one time. Then again, he didn't exactly get off at a smooth start with her either, but this was a human, and a DOCTOR at that. This man could have probably taught a course back at his college if he felt like it. Respect was given in this situation by education and experience bar alone.
"I'm sorry. I'm not entirely sure if you're the one I should speak to, and if not then I'll go to another office, but I wanted to talk to someone running this division." He did not know if he was the one he spoke to with problems, but when in doubt, always take it up with those higher up than the techs you didn't much care for. So far, he only knew that H was higher up. It was better than twiddling his thumbs in the stock room and NOT making any progress. If any other tech tried to squeeze his a** again for shits and giggles, he was going to flip.

The doctor laced his fingers, resting his chin upon then with an enigmatic smile, "Oh? The division leader, hm? It must be quite important for you to go seeking out one, as they're so very testy when you bother them carelessly. Broken bones may be the least of your worries if you casually approach someone like Caelius during their ah...cycle." He tilted his slightly, raising his eyebrows in friendly expectation.

Ohhhhh Jack! He's going to eat you up whole! Saliva was excited. That's what human superiors did, right? Gobble up geeky twigs? Then again, that smile didn't look exactly sharp.
Oh come off it. What exactly could he do that I haven't done already? I'm already fixing printers in the labs and walking minipets around.
This wasn't just some careless complaint about there not being enough ink in the printer or that someone was hurting his feelings. He wanted to be productive, and anyone should appreciate that. The only way to acheive and to get what you wanted was to actually DO and not just sit around complaining all damn day. It wasn't exactly how he was raised.
He hadn't been asked to sit, and therefor he stepped into the room and stood, hoping that as little of his jacket showed. No offense, but he didn't want his words discredited by the fact he was new.
"It's the current situation I'm in. My name is Melvin Wood." He might as well get introductions through. "I wanted to see if I could be reassigned to something more productive. As of right now, I'm just doing minor work for the other technicians, and while I'm not disrespecting my superiors who have worked here longer than I have, I don't aspire to spend my time in the labs making coffee and fixing paper jams when I could do something better with my time. I would rather learn than just work for the sake of working." He wasn't that lazy. He wanted his foot in the door. A man couldn't exactly hold his head up high when all he did was fetch beakers and snacks.
Then he paused, having caught up on something the doctor had said, and slowly asked. "I thought Caelius was a man?"
Sure sounds like a ghoul's name.
I could have sworn that I was told that he was a man!

Eyes twinkling, the doctor replied drolly, "This isn't exactly Hogwarts, my dear. You aren't a student here, but rather an employee of sorts, and a menial one at that. One who has yet to show any hmmm...standout skills that merit more technically challenging duties." Despite his words, H's expression and demeanor remained pleasant. "If you want more, you'll have to show more initiative and ingenuity than simply coming here and asking for reassignment."
The smile grew wide and toothy, "A man? Caelius is so very many things, so I suppose it's possible that someone, somewhere, would think so."

See. He isn't helping. Let's go back to your room and play with Allan. I wanna hear more about the Queen and how she gobbles up ships.
Not now, Saliva. You obviously don't understand men. He's challenging me to do less talking and more doing to see if I'll back down.
Really? - He still looks like he might eat you. I don't think you'd be very tasty though.
"I like Ravenclaw just fine. I just wanted to see if I could work on a project that is or might be coming up. If that's not possible..." He looked to the ground. processing a moment, before looking back up. "Could I use the equipment? Possibly go and get my own specimens as to not use the ones already in the labs." Rep had said minipets were disposable in the labs, and that he caught his from the wild. Why wouldn't it be possible then for him to get his own specimens and work on those. All he needed was permission to use the cages and the equipment. A green light to just work on his own.

"Well, aren't you just a cheeky little thing? You'll be invited to join projects when they have need of trainee level bodies, though don't expect anything specific so early. You're expected to become proficient in all trainee level tasks, not simply those of this division, so you won't be given many inroads toward specialization so soon. Tell me, what have you done since coming here?" The question was genuine, rather than accusatory, "Which areas are interested in researching and which ones do you have experience and qualifications in? When you ask if you can use the equipment, which piece of equipment are you referring to?"

Ohhhhhh. So many words. Saliva whined, barely keeping interest, let along understanding of the current conversation.
Melvin tried not to bite his lip. He was here, and he was going to drive this ship for all it was worth, hoping it would reach shore.
"I don't want to be used as a body. Contrary to what I'm hearing, I'm not giving up my life to be used as nothing more than a body. I want to make an actual difference and use of my time, as short as everyone else seems to be tallying it to be." The fact that his superior only saw him as a body standing here brought about a great level of disrespect.
"I understand everyone has to do their share elsewhere. I've done that since I've come here. I've been helping renovate this place from when it was attacked. I've been sparring with my superiors because I was informed that fighting was a large part of the fight here. I've done those things. I can even understand helping around the lab, but I want to actually work in the division I was assigned to." He was pulling his weight!
"I was studying in biochemistry. If I could maybe just use...ah - the cages for specimens. I'd need testing material." He had recognized a few things in the labs. Centrifuges." He was not saying much though, because he had only spent 2 years in college. Their was still equipment he didn't know how to use, and he wasn't about to lie to keep face when all he wanted to do was learn. He just wanted to show he could use some of the equipment. That he knew his way around some of the equipment. That he wasn't just a empty head and a body to used with no real use than anyone else outside of this lab. That anyone on the street could be picked up and be just as qualified.
Then again, whatever tests he took probably were greatly researched by any number of the techs in the lab.
He took a breath before adjusting his goggles. "I simple want to learn. I'm standing in a division whose objective is to learn more about the creatures that I've grown up seeing. I don't like standing here just fixing a printer when I'm close to those I can learn from and become better." But they were giving him the cold shoulder and he found that utterly frustrating.
"Please? Anything."

"One again, my dear, this isn't Hogwarts. You are no longer a student except in the way that all beings are students of the environment and activities that surround them. I'm not your teacher and honestly feel absolutely no obligation to gently hold your hand and lead you to the path of greater understanding, are we clear? Quite simply, you aren't my type," the doctor quirked an eyebrow at the younger man and then returned his attention back to his own work. "That said, you may use the spare cages, and have the use of a golem for squiring your own specimens if that's where you interest lays. We also happen to have a library, where I've been given to understand that it may, in fact, contain information for those who wish to learn."

He pressed his lips thin at the 'aren't my type' comment, seeing it as more of a insult than being uncomfortable or disappointed. This guy was rather full of himself to think Melvin would want to hit on someone who couldn't even shave. Especially with someone with such an abrasive attitude to those working for him - and that's exactly what was being made clear. This was a division that thrilled itself on learning a frontier that no one else in the world was looking into because it couldn't look, couldn't SEE what they were working on. It was being treated like a business, and this man didn't care if he could help, as long as he filled a spot. <******** him then. As long as he was given permission, he could spend his time doing his own damn busy work and not random tasks given to him by a tech who wouldn't even let him ask a few questions. He'd figure out the equipment on his own.
"Crystal Clear." He managed, pressing the words through his teeth. "If that's what I am allowed, then I'll take it. Thank you." The last two words weren't exactly grateful, but he wasn't going to press his luck too much. He got clearance. It was clear he was on his own. At least till he did SOMETHING to merit a atom of respect.
