User ImageMacalania sat at the base of a tree, deep breaths heaving her body back and forth. Each exhale came through gritted teeth with a groan of pain. It had been this way for a few hours now and she was about ready to lose it. Shaking her head, she tried to calm herself.

Turning to Attacus, she gave a weak smile. "This is a lot harder than I thought it would be." Her voice was weak and cracked, mouth and throat dry from her breathing efforts.

Sinking back against the trunk of the tree, she hissed out through gritted teeth as another stab of pain shot through her. They were coming more frequently now. Perhaps that meant it was almost time. "Water?"

Almost time.. She wouldn't be able to hug her children just yet. They would be placed in the baskets she'd found in the bushes a few days earlier. They were plain, but from what she'd been told, eventually they would take on the colours of the foals inside as they grew. And then, when enough time passed, the foals would emerge and she'd be able to be a mother to them; she'd be able to have a family. That alone was worth the pain. That alone was worth everything she was going through. It was all for her children.

It was a strange day. It had been cool in the morning and he had been going about business as usual in his day carefree and happy. He now had a wonderful and knowledgeable mare by his side. He felt complete for the first time since he was separated from his parents.

But when the afternoon sun came it was hot. Too hot for him and he decided to take a nap. It was Macalania's groan that awakened him. He had been by her side ever since. He was worried and didn't quite know what was happening. They were going to be parents and as soon as the foals arrived they needed to be put straight into their baskets because they were weak and the baskets would help them grow and keep them strong. That was about all he knew.

He didn't expect this. He didn't want to leave her side scared that something bad would happen. She seemed to be in pain, but she was a strong mare and didn't speak too much of it. He kept close and nuzzled her many times.

"I can tell, but it has to end soon right?" He gasped a little. He was not usually this insecure. He needed to be more reassuring. "The beautiful foals will be worth it all though," He said nuzzling her cheek and trying to sound more confident.

When she sat he became even more worried and her wince of pain didn't help ease his anxiety.

Water?! How could he have forgotten that she would need something so basic. He hesitated, he didn't want to leave her. The river was not too far off though and he was thankful for that. He started to rush to the river but then came quickly back and searched around the tree frantically. What was he going to carry the water to her in. He remembered she had a jar or something around that could work. But where was it. He did circles around the tree nervously and then paced back and forth before finally asking her, "Um, I need something to put the water in."

He felt so incapable of dealing with this. And he wasn't the one having the foals. He couldn't imagine how she must feel. He almost didn't want to go get water. But he could tell she was dehydrated. He even thought he saw a crack for in her tree that hadn't been their before.

Macalania panted for a moment, not having the energy to speak. It took her a few moments and she mumbled almost silently. "There's a water skin in my satchel." The water skin was made of leather, something she'd found during her travels. It took her some time before she found a use for it and realised that it was something the two leggers had made. It came in handy, at least.

It would be soon. She felt it to her core. She was close; they were close to arrival and she would glimpse at them for a few moments before they were locked away in their baskets, to emerge at another time when they were strong enough.

"You have strong foals? Don't make me laugh."

The voice in her head stopped her dead. She had been silent for so long that Macalania had thought she'd left.

'You had control. But you're losing it now. Slowly. When the foals come out, so will I.'

The words chilled her to the core and Macalania looked at Attacus, pained. What could she do? She couldn't send him away; no matter what she said, he would never leave her. Not here, not now. Perhaps she would have enough time. Get the foals safe and then run. There was time. She closed her eyes and began going over herbs, listing every single one she knew and its use. That could buy her some time, at least and it was distracting her from the pain.

Attacus ran to her satchel and and hurriedly grabbed it in his teeth. It tried to be careful but was more concerned with finding the skin as quickly as possible. He turned the satchel upside down and shook the contents out. He looked closely at all the items. It was brown as far as he could remember. She had shown him once what it could do. He was amazed at the idea but thought it a bit silly to have more to carry when you could easily find water nearby. But now he was thankful she had it. Finally he recognized among the items. "Found it!" He said excitedly looking back at his love. She looked worried and in pain. He would need to hurry as fast as he could. He wished he could take to his flutter size but he couldn't carry the water and be small at the same time.

"I will be really quick, don't worry. I will only be gone a minute," He said trying to calm her and stay strong and confident for her. She needed him to be strong and fast. He could do it. With that he grabbed the skin and raced toward the stream, letting his wings catch the wind and speed his journey along.

-------

Attacus arrived at the stream out of breath and dropped the skin near a rock and took in a few big breaths. He couldn't afford to waste any time though. It had taken him a a couple of minutes to reach the stream and being out of breath he would not be able to run as fast going back, especially since he wasn't use to running. He preferred flying or walking. He liked taking his time. He was not use to rushing. After a few breaths he grabbed the skin with his mouth and dunked his head in the water. The water felt cool against his face and he almost didn't want to leave it.

He lifted his head again. The skin felt heavier which meant he had been successful. It was then he realized his own thirst. He needed his strength to get back and water would help him greatly too. He set the skin back down by the rock and took few quick drinks from the stream. "That's better," he said to himself. He turned back to grab the skin, but when he picked it up it was light again. The water had spilled out. "Oh no, that was stupid," he thought. He quickly dipped the skin and his head back in the stream. When he lifted it the skin still felt light. He dropped the skin and tried grabbing it with his mouth a different way and tried the stream again. This time he managed to get water in the skin. With that he quickly raced back towards Macalania hoping everything was alright and that he had not missed anything.

Macalania nodded at Attacus and closed her eyes, trying to calm herself and ignore the pain. But it seemed like it was too much to bare and she could feel the wall in her mind crumbling with each contraction. She willed the foals to come quickly, prayed to whatever God or Goddess was listening. Let them come and be safe. Let the pain stop so she could put the wall back up.

You know I'll escape before they come. You can feel it. They won't be here for a few more hours.

She shook her head and let out a scream. "Shut up!"

Macalania wanted to tell Attacus to leave her. If she lost control, at least he'd be safe. But at the same time, she was scared of doing this by herself and a selfish part of her wanted him to stay. Not that it mattered what she felt; he'd never leave her no matter what happened or what she said. She could hear him returning and she composed herself, trying to look like she was in less pain than she actually was. Best he kept calm rather than having the both of them running around like headless chickens.

"Distract me?" She asked with a weak smile as he came into view.

When Attacus got back to Macalania he was out of breath. He had not missed the foals arrival and he was thankful. He wanted to be by her side when that time came. Hopefully he would not need to run and get anything else. He looked as his companion, she looked weaker then when he had left and her smile had not been very reassuring that was not the case. He carefully placed the satchel in front of her making sure it wouldn't spill. He was not very graceful about it and had to readjust it a couple times. "Here drink this. It will make you feel better," he said as he finally got it to stay in place.

He wasn't quite sure what the best way to distract her would be, but he wanted to take her pain away and his best way to do that would be to do what she asked. He wanted to make her happy. His good memories were the things that made him happy. So he decided to share those with her.

"Do you remember when we first met?" he said looking at her lovingly. "Everything about you had me in a trance. Your beauty and knowledge. It was like a dream come true." He looked at her with the same awe and wonder but also with a love that had not been there that first day. He knew she was the only one for him and his life had change in the best way possible the day he met her. He felt like he would be by her side always no matter what happened. He would help her through this and anything else.
