Go out, they told her, go out and fight a dragon like you ought to be doing! Esmeralda was still wincing at the words from a carrier that morning. He had told her she needed to be gathering some dragon orbs to bring back to their leader, and Esme had given him a pure look of horror on her face while refusing. She? Go out and hunt a dragon? This man was surly crazy! But then he’d gotten mad at her, yelled at her in the school corridors and sent her right away to be out and hunting much to her astonishment.

So here she was now, lost in a grassy plain of Serenia and crying her eyes out. She didn’t want to be killing dragons, weren’t Dovaa similar to them? Esmeralda gazed about, the sky was clear, nothing was flying thank god. She probably wouldn’t be able to return until she had a dragon orb, this was so unfair. Sniffling, she advanced in the tall grass, searching and hoping not to find anything. That’s when she heard it, the call of a dragon and Esme froze in place. Only Ysali were found in grass plans, of lord she was going to have to fight one, she just knew it.

Never did she see the green head of a dragon pop from the long grass and look at her, nor had she bothered to turn around else she would have seen the beast. It was curious of this little pink thing, looked like food but it definitely had horns on its head. Silently, it approached it, lowering itself into the grass once more and moving forward as it weaved through the grass. Once it was sufficiently close, the Ysali inhaled and exhaled onto the tiny figure. It did not smell like the usual two leggers it had seen recently.

Esmeralda froze when a large gust of wind and a low growl emerged from behind her, she knew then something, probably a dragon was behind her. She turned around ever so slowly, eyes going wide as she took in the green dragon. Out of instinct she smacked it on the nose and cried out as she did so. The dragon whipped its head back as it shook it snout and look down, Esmeralda was already running through the grass. She never once looked back as she pushed on and smacked right into a figure.

She and the rest of her young classmates had been given a week off for some holiday or another, and although Eanah knew how she should have been spending this time, it had taken her half of her vacation to actually get up the courage to do so. Since she had arrived at the Oblivion Sanctuary the girl had made a point of exploring her surroundings whenever she could. She was proud to say that she had been places on her continent she hadn't dreamed existed, and even though there was still plenty of Soudul to explore, it was time to move beyond the security of her home and into enemy territory. She had secured a spot on a small passenger ferry the previous morning, and upon arriving on the green and gold eyesore known as Serenia, Eanah had retreated into the first relatively harmless-looking inn she had seen and stayed there all day, refusing to leave even to eat.

Besides being famished when she'd awoken today, the girl was also rather ashamed. This was no way to behave. She had left the inn determined to keep her fear and unease hidden from those she met, a feat that had proven much easier to accomplish once she'd found the plains. It seemed there was no one around here to deal with anyway. Eanah sat in the tall, golden grass and chewed on a bit of bread and cheese, silently wondering how these people could live in such cheerful conditions without going mad. Maybe Seren wasn't their problem. Maybe they were all simply addled by the disturbing land their goddess had saddled them with.

She hadn't noticed there was a dragon nearby, not until she heard the same call that had alerted Esme. Eanah slung her small satchel over her shoulder and rose to a crouch as she gripped her wooden walking stick firmly in her small hands.

With a sharp nod, the Oblivionite rose to her feet and was promptly barreled into by a speeding Dovaa.

"H...hey!" she said, in a voice that was only slightly louder than normal. To be honest, it didn't really get that loud, no matter how hard she tried. Maybe once she'd gotten her scepter she would learn a spell that would amplify it. Well, she might if she made it through today. Eanah's empty eye sockets grew noticeably larger when she saw what was tailing the Dovaa girl.

"That way! Go!" she blurted, pointing off in one direction while she started in another, hoping to divide the Ysali's attention. If it went after one of them, the other might be able to get the drop on it.

Esmeralda had barely heard the girl, but she`d glanced at her once to notice the other was an Oblivionite and that she too had just taken notice of the dragon trailing behind them. It didn’t take the other a long time for her to point in some direction and yell at her to go before taking off in the opposite direction, but there was no time to fret over who was going where right now. Esmeralda turned over and plunged into the tall grass opposite of the girl. Oh lord, now the girl might actually die! The other girl had at least some form of a weapon she could use, so she wasn’t totally useless.

The dragon was slightly confused when the two tony beings ran into each other and then separated to run off in opposite direction. It glanced at both, mentally trying to decide which would be better to take one. The one it had been chasing was going to be slowing down soon anyway; it may as well slow down the other and be able to have both instead of just one. The dragon went after the one without horns, laying low into the grass and slithering through the grass.

Looking behind her, Esme slowed down her run ad heaved as she tried to regain her breath. Oh crap, the dragon had gone after the other girl. While this may have been good because the dragon was no longer after her, she was not leaving the other to die. Wiping her brow, Esme began to slowly make her way in the other direction, listening to any sounds or if she could hear the girl running or worst screaming.

The Ysali's slithering gait failed to shake the earth, a feeling Eanah had come to associate with being chased by a dragon. Even so, she didn't slow down, not at first. She attempted some wide side-to-side swerves, but it seemed that stalling tactic only worked on dumber creatures. Adrenaline fueled her skinny legs, and she couldn't help feeling relieved that she had worn a more manageable ankle-length dress today instead of something longer.

She was tiring quickly, but Eanah wasn't ready to give up. Where had that stupid Dovaa run off to? The other girl had probably left her to die. It figured. She would have done the same.

Eanah seemed to sense the strange rupture in the earth before she came upon it. The air here was warmer, and the ground seemed almost... translucent to her unconventional vision. She doubled back away from the hole, scrambling to come up with a way to lead the dragon into it without plunging to her death. As she passed the creature's foot, she whacked it with her stick for good measure.

While being a hero was probably last on Esmeralda’s to do list, there was no letting the other girl dying. Taking a deep breath she turned around and began running hoping to find the girl before the dragon did. This was such a tiresome adventure; she could already feel the tears gathering at the corners of her eyes as she tried to recollect herself. Why did they have to fight and kill dragons? Why couldn’t they just let them be and surely in return they would let others be in peace? No time to bother with answering such questions now, she could hear the dragon now as she got closer.

The girl she was looking for actually passed her, and Esme had to stop and go back after her. “Hey, hey!” The dragon seemed to have briefly lost them for now, but it would probably be on them soon. “Can you stop running just for a second please?” This was the most exercise she’d ever done in a while; she certainly was not planning on doing this ever again, hopefully. “We need a plan, and getting separated is not a good plan.” She probably sounded silly saying it while huffing and puffing all over the place, but she didn't want anyone dying.

Eanah stopped short when she realized the Dovaa had come back around. She was going to get them both killed if she insisted on taking a break to chat like a giddy school girl. She wanted a plan? What was wrong with running?

"That crack," the Oblivionite said, trying to catch her breath in the most dignified way possible. "It runs along there." She pointed, moving her arm in a sharp line back in the direction she had come. "If we can get around it and back to the center before the dragon catches up, hopefully it will miss the hole and follow us straight, trip, and break its neck." Her voice held no emotion other than a certain thinness that came from her holding back her own exhausted panting. "Unless you have a better plan."

“No that’s a good enough plan! Are we going around the same way or splitting up?” Oh lord if they wanted to get this done they were going to have to hurry up. “Maybe it’s better if we split up. I’ll go this way,” Esme pointed to her left. “So see you on the other side!” And she was off running again, eyes looking ahead of her at the crack to figure out when she could successfully cross over. When she spotted her opportunity, she jumped over quickly and was running once more to the center in the hopes that the other girl would be making it there too on time with her.

Ah, so she did at least have some sense. Eanah didn't much like the idea of running away, but given their situation, it was probably best to do so just this once. She nodded at the Dovaa once more as she took off in the opposite direction, relief giving her figurative wings. They could do this. They... kind of had to or they were toast.

The Oblivionite ran faster than she could have ever anticipated her legs would allow, and between the two of them, they led the Ysali just where it needed to go to die.

Eanah hurried back the way she had come when she heard the beast groan and fall, retrieving one of the glowing orbs nestled in its bones and vacating the scene as quickly as she could.
