“Soooo, where we going Bella-mommy?” Lyra bounded forward by the cream colored mare’s side, her tail high in the air, eyes trained on the grass ahead of them.
They had been traveling for a while now, a few hours maybe. Zival had found them not too long after he had swiveled off to let the rabbits know where she went. Lyra knew they’d be worried even if they couldn’t talk to her. But it wasn’t that big of a deal. She kept things light and happy and vocal when she was home. Suffice to say she’d miss them and one day she hoped she could return the favor. It was the least she could do given everything they’d given to her.
“And how many people are in your family?”
“And do I have siblings???”
“What types of animals?”
“Are we in the mountains?”
“How about a forest?”
“Cousins?”
“What’s daily life like?”
So many questions kept running through her head it was like her mouth couldn’t move quick enough. Perched on her shoulders Zival opened one eye to look up at his charge, his voice calm and dry as he spoke up to her.
“Lyra, you need to breathe. There’s more than enough time to answer all your questions. Just give poor Bella a small break.”
“But—“ Lyra whined, “I’m curious! I can’t help it!”
“And that’s fine. But just remember to breathe and allow her to answer your questions one at a time before adding on another one.”
Lyra sighed forlornly, “fiiiiine.”

The mare was patient. She had successfully reared six colts and a single filly, not including other adoptees, and as such, she new what she was getting in to. The non-stop questions and inquiries made by the young filly were not surprising to the mare, especially after finding her being guarded by rabbits. Bless their heart for keeping an eye on the girl, but truly, she could not have left her alone in the plains. Not with predators lurking around every angel, not with her being so exposed to the elements.
Bella herself had grown up alone without family. She had always yearned to know of the origins of her lineage, to know why she had been born without siblings, without a mother or father. It was likely something she would never discover, and while she had managed to turn out well enough (albeit very naive), she could not have left Lyra to suffer the loneliness of such a fate.
Perhaps she was too young to know of it not, but with age and growth, it would haunt her.
"You will find out in due time, dear," the mare explained. "We'll be heading up in to the mountains in a few days time, but for now, we're going to make a visit with one of your brothers." She would be able to send word back up to the hills, to inform them she had found a new foundling, so they would be better prepared. There was a history of adoption within the Hour Glass Summit, and Bella was simply keeping that tradition alive.
"You have a great many siblings, of all different colors and shapes. My mate and I have been blessed with seven, naturally, but we've also adopted two others. Raphe and Muriel have long since left, but the other seven are still within the herd, and you will meet them all once we arrive at the summit. As it stands you'll be able to meet six of your older brothers, and one older sister."
She hoped that might appease the young filly, or at least give her something to consider. Little did Lyra know, she had just inherited both a large family and a large herd. "We'll be going up in the woods in the mountains, deep in a shadowed grove. It's a long walk, but we'll take it slow, after we rest up for the night." She was certain that the young filly would be incredibly tuckered out, especially after such a long day. "There will be time enough to get all your questions answered, I promise." She assured, reaching down to over the brown coated filly a gentle nuzzle.

Ooooooooo, she DID have siblings!!! Awesome!!! This caused Lyra to grin and trot next to Bella even happier. SEVEN siblings no less!!!! Even more awesome!!! Zival clung harder to the filly as her trotting became even more bumpy. Her excitement starting to get the best of her. Well, starting to may not have been the right word. She was a long way from being “normal” by Zival’s standards. She looked upwards towards the looming mountains in which they were heading towards. Even through the tree she could still see the stone. Even though the thought of climbing upwards seemed to be daunting, Lyra was totally up for the task. She was able bodied and full of energy! That would be enough.
Or so she thought.
“What are the others named?” she asked prancing about, “I wanna memorize them before we get there!”
Since being on her own Lyra had taken to memorization games to remember where she was or where she was going. It kept her mind occupied and fresh. Gave her a sense of learning and accomplishment. And even Zival was happy enough to help her. When he’d come home he’d name off names, places, things, or a mixture of all of them. And she would repeat them all until she got all correctly named in the correct order and what they actually were. It helped her to compartmentalize everything so that she could remember them later one when needed. Debris came close, almost up to Lyra’s chest. So she did what any other filly would do…
Try to jump over it.
So she stopped.
Stared for a moment.
Eyed it.
Tongue was stuck out in concentration.
She then took a few steps back, eyes narrowing. She could totally make this jump, she knew it! She’d done it before!
Zival was first to speak, his voice rushed, “Lyra! You know better!”
“I got this!” she answered quickly and took off in a sprint despite the callings of Zival on her back, his claws digging into her back, hanging on for dear life, and the callings of Bella to tell her to go around.
It came closer, closer, bigger, bigger.
Her legs bunched, her hind legs sprung upwards, and she sailed over the tree trunk….barely scraping her belly. Lyra squee’d in glee. Her hind legs kicking up in excitement. She knew she could do it! Zival was always so worried. Such a worry wart for nothing! She got this! Just like all the other times.
Lyra turned, her short tail wagging in excitement, expecting to see Zival’s disapproving look and impending comments, only to see two pairs of eyes on her. Both disapproving. She bounced in place, trying to make up for it.
“I’ve done that plenty of times! I wasn’t going to get hurt! Promise!”

Perhaps it had simply been some time since she'd had young ones near, but the amber eyed mare could not help but be concerned when the filly made a break to leap over quite a large tree. Already she could see many things go wrong -- from missing the jump, breaking a leg, scraping her stomach, or who knew what else! Granted, Bella herself used to be a young, adventurous filly, alone just like Lyra but without a lizard to grant her guidance. Still, the fact that the young one hadn't even thought to listen. . . . to stop when asked. . .
Hmmm.
Perhaps they would have to work on that. On the one hoof, she understood -- the young filly didn't have anyone but familiars to look after her, and she wasn't sure if they were legitimately family or father figures. While Zival seemed to try to keep an eye on the foal, he unfortunately could do little if his words of warning weren't taken. Still, thankfully, the young mare had made the jump, and seemed excited about it. . . .
Oh, the difficulties of being a mother. On the one hand, she wanted to encourage the mare to be bold and brave. On the other hoof, she needed the little filly to listen! While this was just a simple jump, especially when up in the mountains, she oculd very easily get hurt. To leap over a crevice, to slip on the stones and start a landslide or even slide down a mountain path herself. "Lyra!" She trotted over to where the little filly was trying to explain herself, and she did fuss over the little brown filly, nosing at her, making sure she hadn't scraped her stomach or legs. ". . . I'm sure you have done it before, but why didn't you stop when Zival asked? When I asked?" Her tone was serious, and she wasn't smiling, for all that she was relieved that the little filly had managed to make the jump.
Ah, but being a mother wasn't all cuddles and sunshine.
