Today was a day of studies and Ambrose intended to use all of it to the fullest. The only thing that made him happier than reading his dusty old books was spending time with the queen who had managed to steal his heart when they were both young. He knew there could be no luckier stallion than he in all the lands, for his mate was truly one in a million. A small grin formed on his normally stern maw as the image of Cylindra came to mind, causing him to lose track of where he was on the page. Without her he knew he would never have been able to become a great king, she contributed a lot to his life. A small breeze rustling the pages reminding him of his original intentions and he began to pay attention to his readings once more.

It was the perfect day to sit out in the gardens beyond the castle and catch up on some reading. The weather was warm and there wasn’t a cloud visible in the sky. The flowers and fruit trees in the garden gave off such a sweet scent that anyone passing by would be bewitched. All of these elements combined created the perfect atmosphere for learning, something that the king of wands treasured greatly. He had even commissioned a library in his honor so that his subjects would be able to attend anytime they wished to expand their knowledge as well as their horizons. He had been so excited at the prospect of finally having a public library that he had behaved as a young colt would have, not one of his more composed moments.

He knew it was his purpose to protect his people and as such often took to displaying a strong and silent type of personality, but he was also quite compassionate and generous. His father before him had allowed greed and selfishness to guide many of his decisions, and upon seeing the sorry state of the kingdom, young Ambrose vowed to be a very different sort of leader. At first the citizens doubted that he would be any different than his sire, but he had proved them wrong. Whenever he doubted himself Cylindra would act as his guiding light, she was his greatest treasure, the one thing he valued more than anything else in existence.

Her life was a fairy tale, but in fairy tales, they didn't mention how much work being a queen really entailed. From sunrise to sunset she was constantly on the go, overseeing this or that, which only the queen could do. The basic running of the kingdom fell to her beloved husband, but it was her job to see that the castle ran effectively and efficiently, and this day was no different. Starting in the kitchen, she instructed the cooks on the meals that would be served that day. Then she moved on to the housekeeper, who oversaw all the servants, making sure the castle was cleaned and prepared for any unexpected guests that might drop in. After that, she would take a tour of the gardens, speaking with the gardener to see if there was anything that needed her special attention. The king loved to sit in the gardens and read whenever he had a free moment. So she took special pride in making sure they were well tended. No stray leaves could be found lying on the ground. No nests of annoying insects were permitted to make their home in her gardens. Birds were encouraged to nest in the trees, as their voices could be quite calming in times of stress. She was making her rounds of the gardens this afternoon when she happened across her husband.

It was a warm day, but there was a nice breeze blowing through the branches of the trees, and the bench on which he sat was shaded by one of those trees. His attention was taken by the words on the pages of the book he was reading, so he did not notice her standing there watching him. She had met him when they were much younger, and their parents had arranged their marriage. But it wasn't an arrangement that either of them regretted. Their parents made sure that they spent a great deal of time together as children, so that when they were older, the love they had for one another would be a natural one, and not forced. She debated on whether or not to interrupt his peaceful rest and decided to leave him to his book. She turned to go and stepped on a stick that should never have been lying on the ground. As her foot snapped it in two, the sound carried in the quiet of the garden.

User ImageVarian had been called to a meeting with the king. His mind was racing as to what the meeting would be concerning. He was the kingdom's emissary, and it was his duty to visit neighboring kingdoms on occasion. He had heard rumors that there was a new laegil king and queen in one of the nearby kingdoms, and wondered if perhaps it might be there he was to be sent. Diplomatic relations with their neighbors was what he was good at, and he'd been sitting here at home far to long now. He was looking forward to taking a trip, and meeting new people. "Please let it be this," he said to himself as he made his way to the castle, and his meeting with the king.

The words sped through his mind painting vast pictures of far off places and revealing secrets he had never known to exist. Each time he turned the page he felt joy and peace, reveling the feeling of the pages between his fingers. He hadn’t even noticed his beloved’s presence until the snapping of a twig caused him to look up. Tenderly placing a leaf in between the pages he closed the book and stood to his full height, a smile painting his otherwise serious countenance. Stepping forward he took his mate’s hand in his and pressed a kiss into her palm.

“Are you sneaking around again my queen?”

Grabbing his staff from where he had rested it against a tree he adjusted his large purple cloak and turned his attention again to the beautiful mare before him. How he had been so lucky as to have a lovely creature like her as his mate he would never know. Growing up he had always been the awkward little prince, unable to socialize well with others outside of an academic environment. Then she came along and taught him how to be a better stallion. Realizing he had been staring he cleared his throat and looked about the garden.

“As usual you have kept this place in an amazing state, have you been scaring the servants?”
He finished with a playful wink and was about to go on when the sound of another approaching caught his ear. A messenger stepped swiftly yet carefully through the garden, bowing at the sight of the king and queen.

“Majesties, Varian has come at the request of the king. He is waiting in the throne room.”

Gently interlocking his fingers with his mate’s Ambrose curtly nodded and waited until the messenger was out of earshot before looking again to the queen.

“I suppose it is time to tell our young stallion that he has a very important job to do.”

Varian arrived at the castle and made his way to the throne room. When he did not find the king there, he sent a servant to search him out, and let him know of his arrival. As he stood there waiting he took the time to look around. It had been a while since he had been here, but not much had changed in that time. His mind wandered to other matters, such as when the king and queen would provide the realm with an heir. He could barely remember the previous king, as he was just a boy when death took him from his people. But he had served the present king for a few years now, and he was quite pleased with the sort of meara that sat upon the throne. Hearing a noise he turned to see if the king had arrived.

She laughed at her husbands questions. "You should know me well enough to know I am no good at sneaking. That is your forte my love. As for scaring the servants, now that is something I am well versed at, and I never pass up an opportunity to practice my skill." He was about to reply to her quip when they were interrupted by one of the servants with a message for the king. She looked at her husband and said, "What do you have in store for our dear Varian? You haven't mentioned anything to me." Her last statement was delivered with a note of disappointment in her voice. She was usually kept up to speed on the goings-on in the kingdom.
