User ImageKivuli groaned as she awoke; she had a pounding headache, she let out a sharp hiss as feeling came back to the rest of her body. The wing she was laying on hurt, the pain intensified as she tried to fold it. Letting out another agitated hiss she folded the other one and shifted around a bit trying to figure out where she was. feeling the wood that kept brushing up against her she guessed she was in some sort of create, it wasn’t big enough for her to move around with both of her wings extended and even keeping her injured one out was making it hard to move, she hoped it wasn't broken it would make it harder to get to.

She snorted looking at the food and water he left, did he really think he could lock her up and then a bit off food would make it better? She scoffed it didn’t matter how long it took to get out if this insufferable contraption she wouldn’t eat it. She was a hunter and didn't need handouts especially from cruel humans.

She managed to find the opening of the box and cursed when she realized she'd need another key. She growled He'd have to check on her eventually right? She'd bid her time until then pretending to be unconscious yes that would certainly draw him in after all there was no point in keeping a dead body was their? Unless of course you where planning on eating it but she didn’t think he was planning on eating her. Once he opened the box she'd rip his thought out.

Akumu was gone, he had gotten out of the house and his revenge there was no reason for him to come back. No she would have to find her own way out and hope the upper window was still open, and that her wing was strong enough that she wouldn’t fall like a rock.

User Image His heart was beating in his chest as he paced anxiously back and forth along the top of the stone wall.

In almost any other situation Akumu could think, he would have just turned tail and run and never looked back. But something was keeping him here. Keeping him from just cutting his losses and looking out for number one.

Was it guilt? She was only there because of him. This was his idea. His vengeance. She had come here for a thrill.

Or...

Was it something more.

Hissing to himself, Akumu scampered back across the rocks and began circling the house, looking for a point of entry. But he had done this before. That's WHY he had asked Kivuli to come with him.

****

Meanwhile, the old man slept soundly, and the box was strong. Some of the slats were wide enough that she could see between them, but she could barely slip a paw out between them - there was no way that she could slip out entirely.

It was still hours till dawn, however, and whatever the man planned.

***

THe ground floor was secure. DOors were shut, windows were latched, and Akumu didn't have the advantage of magical shadows to open things for him.

He backed up... more... more... more... He had to be more than fifteen feet from the building before he could even see over the ledge of the pagoda-style roof. THere was no way he could jump that high.

But it didnt' stop him from trying.

Over and over again... Akumu tried... or tried climing and then getting over the ledge... but it was useless.

Eventually... exhausted, Akumu slid under a bush in view of the front door and rested until dawn.

THe man would have to come out eventually...

***

Hours dragged by slowly... so slowly... the sky began to fade from black to violet and the man began to stir...

Kivuli hissed and tried to put her paw though some of the slates, she was angry no that was to light a word furious worked much better. She was not some stupid rat you can slap in a cage, No she was a neko an aligned on at that. This man would pay dearly for this. She would make sure he'd have scars IF he managed to live through it.

She growled the stupid key wasn't anywhere in sight, she would probably be able to brake the box eventually, claw it until there was nothing left, that would take time and she didn't know how much time she had.

An almost sadistic grin spread over her face, she could make time. Oh yes it would be wonderful she'd get her revenge at the same time. She laughed a bit, strangling him in his sleep would be perfect. She watched him though one of the slits in the box trying to send her darkness after him, it went a few feet before sliding back, she growled as it did the same thing the second time.

She snarled moving around angrily in the box, she knew what the problem was. Her wing hurt too much for her to focus on the darkness. She wouldn't be able to kill him from this distance nor would she be able to solidify the darkness and use it to cut the wood.

She laid down agitated, looking out the window she saw it was starting dawn, she would have to go back to the first plan of trying to get him to open the box and then attack him. She carefully moved back into the exact same position she had been in when she regained conciseness. She slowed her breathing the shadows helping to make it look like she wasn't breathing.

IT seemed like hours that Kivuli had to wait, lying virtually motionless and feigning death until finally the old man began to stir. The reaches of dawn streamed in through the glass of the window and finally touched the man's face where he lay nearly as motionless on his tatami mat. In what seemed like a practiced rituatual, he woke, stretched each finger, each hand, each arm all the way down to his toes before he even looked towards Kivuli's cage.

He changed out of his nightclothes and put on a simple but formal suit and retreived his cane, finally turning to where Kivuli was trapped. He frowned as he saw her still laying where he had placed her.

His eyes narrowed, however. If she was intelligent, she could be faking it... he walked very slowly around the room, looking at her, from a distance, from different angles, but he couldn't discern any movement. Then, quickly, surprisingly, he stamped his foot along with his cane - HARD - on the wooden floor just outside of the cage from where her head lay.

Meanwhile, Akumu waited as well, a plan formulating in his head. He had moved once again that night while he waited for the dawn to break. He didn't have magical shadows like Kivuli, but he did have intuition and cunning borne of the streets.

He chewed some long reeds and carefully pieced them together with flexible forepaws until he had created a long, thin line that he stretched between the pillars just outside the doorway of the man's keep. It was low to the ground - not more than four inches high.

Kivuli waited impatiently for him to get she was frustrated, the dawn was ushering in the bright light of the day. She knew that her darkness where growing weaker as a result of it. If the light got much stronger before she got out she'd be helpless. Unable to control her darkness due to the amount of light and her lack of ability to concentration due to the amount of pain she was in.

Finally he awoke she listened bored as he got dressed never once shifting position or opening her eye. Finally he stopped and it sounded like he was inspecting her, she hoped he would take the bait. There was a faint noise as he picked up is cane she assumed to go look at her from a different angle.

It came down with the loud thump near her, it irritated her sensitive hearing but she didn't reacted. So he was smart after all. She thought before focusing back what was going on it would be good for her to get distracted now. While it was startling she had known it was a possibility, she had assumed that he was going to kick the box instead.

The fact that it had made some of the water splash onto her was annoying but she ignored it. Hours and days of stalking things had thought her not to react when things hit or almost hit her. If she didn't move they would think she wasn't there which would not only freak them out more but terrified them when she attacked from that spot. She was grateful that he didn’t kick it though; if he had it would have made the pain in her wing flare up again. After several hours she was finally getting used to it, which certainly wasn’t a good thing she mused.

The old man frowned at the still form. HE muttered something lowly under his breath and seemed to start to turn to go. And then, without warning, he instead drove the small end of his cane quickly through the bars to job Kivuli hard in the ribs.

Kivuli frowned inwardly, he was walking away, and she needed him to open the cage. She jumped up with an angry hiss and slammed her paw down on the cane that had hit her in the ribs, they ached and the pain in her wing flared up again. Darkness shot up the cane trying to get to the old man as Kivuli glared furiously at him, her plan was ruined but she’d still find a way to get free and get her revenge.

The old man positively cackled as he saw Kivuli spring to life once more, with more of a spring in his step than even when he had been chasin down the intruders. He gave a quick hop-step and then slammed down the end of his cane against the floor with a loud THUD in celebration of his prize being alive.

"Oh ho!" he jeered, "The clever spirit thinks that she can outwit me? It will be a pleasant day in the nine hells when you can fool Takashiro!"

He bent down, looking over her over as she spat in fury and the darkness rolled out towards him. He took a cautious step back, but there was not fear in his eyes - only the gleam of greed.

"Oh what they will pay for a treasure like you. I wager that the Emperor himself would consider himself blessed to have a bakemono held captive. Now come my little one," he said, picking up the cage gingerl by the handle on top, "let us see if you cannot make Takashiro again the most famous - and wealthy - merchant in the land!"

Oh don't worry old fool, I will out wit you soon. She thought venomously, her tail lashing around. She slid her paw though one of the gaps and attempted to slash him with her claws.

She continued her glaring, on the inside she was grinning mercilessly, oh yes they'd pay a lot for her. They'd pay in blood they all would. The old man would pay as well.

THe man continued to chuckle mirthfully to himself as he carefully descended the stairs carrying Kivuli's cage in his hand even as she attempted to swipe at him. The angle of the cage bars, however, did not allow her to be able to reach his hand, and he held it far enough away from his body that her paw could barely touch the edge of his yukata.

They reached his front door and he opened it, leading out with her cage and following behind it. He looked inside again now that they were out in the sun, admiring his prize as he continued to walk....

**

AKumu snapped to attention as he heard the door bang, his tail thrasing back and forth as he licked his lips just as he did when he was waiting for a mouse to emerge from its hole. His eyes flicked from his tripwire to the man, who was more interested in the contents of the cage - Kivuli! - than his surroundings.

Just keep walking, old man. Don't look down. Just keep walking, he prayed silently.

**

Fortune tends to favor the Maneki Neko - and today was no exception.

Too distracted by the strange winged bakemono in his cage, the man didn't think twice about looking around at his home or gardens that he knew nearly by memory. He did not notice the thin vines strung between the columns outside his door. And as he walked, not looking where he was going, his foot caught. Already in motion, and not nearly as spry as he had once been in his youth, he was already toppling forward before he even realized what had happened!

"NO!" He called, trying to brace himself for the impending impact, but that was complicated by the bulky cage in one hand, his cane in the other.

With a loud CRASH, and a jarring thud, the old man, Kivuli, and the cage all fell hard at the base of the three short steps that led up to his porch.

The old man was groaning, and sounded like he was in pain. The cage, however, well-built by sturdy materials, was in tact enough to keep her prisoner, but had taken some damage where the wood was begining to split, and some of the ornate decorations broken.

Akumu sprang from his hiding place in the bushes, "Kivuli! Are you all right?!"

Kivuli hissed at him and clawed at the piece of his yukata that was within her reach, hopefully she’d ruin it on him. She was too busy trying to get him that she also didn’t notice the trip wire. She let out a startled yell as the man tripped and sent both of them to the ground. Hopefully he had broken something or at least wouldn't be able to get up very fast.

She threw herself at the broken side of the box hoping to break it and run before the old fool could get back up. Her wing protested the violent fall and throwing but she ignored it and was starting to get up again when she heard her name, snapping her head around she saw Akumu dart towards her. "Akumu!" Why was he still here? He had gotten his revenge there wasn't any reason for him to hang around unless he wanted to continue tormenting the old man but he had called out to her and asked if she was okay. confused showed on her face for a second before she responded. "One of my wings hurts, but I'm fine."

Akumu leapt up on the box, frantically scanning it for a weak point. he hopped up and down on it trying to get the wood to buckle, but while it groaned, it did not give way. There was a keyhole, but it looked complicated... way too complicated. With moving pieces of wood that he batted at a bit with his paws before growing frustrated. "That b*****d," he hissed, looking over towards the old man who was groaning, starting to roll but had yet to get to his feet.

He couldn't let him get back up.

"Let her out!" Akumu snarled furiously. The old man's eyes just narrowed spitefully.

HIs plan had worked so far.... but now what? He couldn't get Kivuli out, and the old man was sure to get up soon - he was hurt, and PISSED!

Kivuli was confused, why was Akumu so upset over her capture? Why was he trying so hard to get her out? Did he feel like he didn’t get his revenge because she got captured, that she screwed up his revenge? It was possible she supposed but if that were true wouldn’t he be mad at her? He didn’t seem angry at her just worried.

He seemed to be directing all his anger at the old man. She too was furious at this man, not only had he captured her but he was arrogant enough that he thought that he could use her in a get rich quick scheme or something. She was not just some decoration or object that looked pretty and could be sold! She threw herself at the broken part of the crate several times. She heard a small crack once and continued to throw herself at it. She hoped she could get out before the old man got back up. It wouldn’t do any good if he decided to catch Akumu as well.

She growled in anger if the stupid sun wasn't up she'd have the power of darkness on her side. Her wing was aching terribly as she continued to throw her self against the box she winced as a splinter of wood lodged it self into her injured wing.

The old man was flailing for his cane, struggling and wheazing to get a breath. he had to move fast.

he looked down under his feet and the spreading... SLOWLY spreading crack through one of the bars. He furrowed his brow before calling down to Kivuli:

"I will count to three, and then I will pounce down on the side of this bar near the gate. And you will push up on the other half of the segment. Together, I bet we can break this!"

He backed up.

"One..."

he crouched.

"Two..."

His tail wiggled and he prepared to spring.

"THREE!"

he leapt, driving all of his weight into one of the sides of the wooden bar.

Kivuli listen to Akumu's plan and nodded once he was done. "Sounds like a plan." She moved into position and pulled both of her wings close to her body, the injured one screamed but she ignored the pain as she crouched.

She waited listening closely to his counting and jumped as soon as he said three. She hit the bar at the same time as Akumu and they where rewarded the tell tale crack of braking wood.

She stood back for a second before pushing the remains of the broken bar out of the way. She looked at the gap for a second hoping she would be able to squeeze though it. Most cats could go threw a place as long as they could get their head though because of the way their forelegs are design. Unfortunately once can only press wings so close to their body. She hoped that they would cause problems with the escape but the inured one wouldn't lay as flat as she'd hoped it would.
