He was chasing a bird. The yearling bound with a newfound nimbleness amongst the tall trees of the forest; the clumsiness of his foalhood (almost) forgotten. He was older now, stronger and ready to challenge the world head first. Kedehern followed a twittering sparrow; the little bird seemingly amused and stopping often to let the young deer catch up. Kedehern stumbled through a stream, recovered from his momentary blunder, and continued on until the trees came to an abrupt stop.

The world opened up into an endless field, a gentle breeze rustling through the tall grass. He slowed to a halt. The midday sun shone down without clouds to temper its strength and Kedehern was almost blinded by the intensity, eyes having to adjust after the shade of the forest. The sparrow had disappeared, but the yearling’s attention wasn’t on that anymore. Other forms were scattered across the field, moving lazily beneath the sun and winding their way through grasses.

Kedehern casually bit the head off a nearby flower, chewing it as his gaze roamed took in the view. The field wasn’t endless anymore, but it was certainly big, and contained within it were any new potential friends.

“Hellooooo.” He called to anyone who cared to respond as he pushed into the sea of grass.

In the vast sea of lush greens that swayed so carelessly in the gentle breeze, was Athos. He stood calmly in the meadow, grazing peacefully on the fresh, succulent grasses that were provided, glowing orange eyes contently closed to complete the picture. He'd wandered upon the plains just by chance, as he'd happened to be enjoying the pleasantries of a forest nearby, ears tickled with the songs of birds and bug accompaniment. Rustling of leaves, and branches, that clicked, clacked, and brushed so tenderly... the frantic beating of avian wings above his head, or zipping past his form... The graceful buck felt right at home...

The divine grasslands was just as delightful. Mice, spiders, grasshoppers and other small critters were slinking about skillfully through the untamed blades, scurrying home or hustling to harvest. All of them seemed so busy and in a rush... it managed to make the easygoing stag chuckle to himself. With a mouthful of grasses in tow, he chewed them slowly to savor their taste, plump full of water and nutrients, ears flicking back and forth lazily, before just calmly folding against his skull. That is until a voice called out, instantly yanking them to an alerted position. Luminous eyes peeled open to follow along towards the source, spotting a young buck just entering into the field. He watched the tyke curiously, sparing a brief glance about to see if anyone else would greet the youth. Seeing as no one had yet, he decided to. Finishing his portion of greens, Athos called out in a strong, but very gentle voice, "Greetings, youngling~"

Kedehern couldn’t help but be a little awed by the first buck that greeted him. He was always humbled by the proud adult visage and this one had such fine antlers. He was looking forward to the day when his own little buds blossomed and then he could be the grand protector he was born to be. Of course, exactly what he was supposed to be protecting, he wasn’t quite sure of yet.

The youngling made a few bounding leaps through the grass to reach the older male. “Kedehern!” He said by way of greeting once he was close enough for a comfortable chat, and then, apparently realizing that was hardly enough information, added, “that’s my name.”

Ears swiveling forward, he glanced around to see if anyone else would come and talk before his focus settled on Athos once more. His gaze was expectant, waiting for a favourable response…

Ah. This.

He vaguely remembered this, though most days, he felt as if he had wound up here again through no will of his own, and though he was here, he couldn't quite remember how he had arrived. But he minded the mystery little; there were other things here that he could contemplate, things that could feed his ravenous hunger for knowledge and understanding just as well, and nothing pleased Careo quite as much as learning something new.

The yearling remained where he was and stood and watched. Not far, another not much older than himself chased a bird. He moved with a grace that Careo knew had only just sprung into his long legs. Careo would know; he had been a fawn, too, not so long ago. Though he did not gambol and play as often as other youngsters did, he knew well enough the clumsiness of fawnhood. That clumsiness had represented a certain lack of refinement that Careo had not enjoyed. Growing up was a much more enjoyable process by far.

His eyes seemed almost to burn as he stood and watched, glowing as they always did with a cold, blue light that seemed at once distant and very much present. His eyes knew things, secrets and riddles that hid behind them in his mind, always moving, always growing. There was no end to the things Careo could learn or would learn. He was a sponge, taking in anything and everything for the day when it would come to his aid.

And still, his bright eyes burned with an icy fire. He watched the other yearling rip the head from a sweet flower; he was playful, this one, young. The pale yearling looked again, at the dun colored buck pulling at the grass and calmly ignoring the frenzy of activity above. His ears flickered to catch the sounds of their conversation, learning, listening, watching.

Ah.

Carmintine. That was his name. Tiny golden eyes blinked into wakefulness, squinting blearily against the light that was filtering down through the leaves, tinted gold and green. Such a long name for so small a creature, but it was the first thought that crossed his mind as he woke from his nap. It was almost as if someone had whispered it softly into his ear during his sleep, that he was meant to know it. As he lay there in the underbrush, on his bed of twigs and leaf litter, he gave it a few moments of deliberation while he willed himself into consciousness. His little muzzle gaped open for a moment as he yawned, inhaling deeply, over-sized ears flicking this way and that. This was the Wardwood, wasn't it? He knew that as well, as if it were some sort of innate fact.

He did not have long to ponder, because the sound of voices nearby distracted him immediately. Most notably, the sound of a very soft 'hellooo' off in the distance. With some amount of awkwardness, the little blue-black fawn pushed himself up onto his delicate stilt-legs, stretched out, and immediately hopped forward without a second thought. Leaving the dappled edge of the woods behind him, the youngling stumbled out into the sun, resolving to find the source of the voices. A sea of grass met him as he came out of his hiding place; the others, he figured, were across this sea, and he would voyage out fearlessly to meet them. He bleated to announce his presence, a soft 'maah' to whoever might be listening.

Carmintine feared no amount of grass, but along the edges of the meadow, the stuff was taller than he was. He set off at a clumsy bound, leaping as high as his legs could take him, trying each time to catch a glimpse of whoever had called out before. "Hello? Hello? Is there anyone out there?"

[Side note: If you're interacting with Athos, please either tag me, or bold his name, or else I'll miss it. ]

His glowing gaze stayed locked onto the youngster as it came prancing on over, unable to help a light chuckle that rumbled in his throat from the great gusto that was observed. Ears flicking forward as the little guy spoke, Athos was more than able to understand the gesture, "It's nice to meet you, Kedehern. I am Athos. Come to enjoy this beautiful meadow as well, then?" he calmly asked, before his attention was deterred briefly by another voice, long with a visible presence.

Caero's figure was spotted in the distance behind the yearling before him, and then there was... the sound of someone calling out. It rose and fell, along with some sort of movement through the thick, lush grasses. My, so many younglings out and about. Following the dark body that would appear and disappear, the calm buck wore a very easygoing smile, "Friends of yours?" he asked looking to Kedehern again, and behind him to the action going on.

“Athos…” He repeated the name, little tail giving a little wriggle. “Ah, yeah, I guess so. A little bird showed me the way…” He grinned. “It’s nice here.” Sensing the older buck’s shift in attention, Kedehern turned on the spot in order to follow his gaze. Head lifted and ears perked, he looked directly towards where Careo was watching from the trees. But before he had a chance to decide whether to beckon the other yearling over or not, he was distracted by the bouncing approach of a dark-coated fawn.

“Not yet, but I’m sure they will be!” Kedehern announced cheerfully in response to Athos, and then made a bounding leap over the grass in order to meet the fawn half-way. “Over here! Come on, you can do it!” He encouraged whenever he caught a glimpse of the approaching Carmintine.

My my, there were voices springing up all over the field it seemed. While the doe generally preferred to stick to places that would prove shade and ease of concealment for her among the towering, sheltering trees, but the grass, flowers, and warm sun had drawn her out from the shade and into the sea of long, rippling grasses. From her position, she could see the young dark fawn taking off towards a few of the other voices in clumsy little leaps and bounds. Fjotli couldn't help but give a little chuckle, easy amusement lighting her golden eyes. A few leaps of her own brought her nearer to the leaping youngster. Not immediately next to him, but enough for him to get some good, clear peeks of her through the grass. Fjotli was doing her best to time her jumps with his own, or at least every other one. She was more practiced and her legs were longer. The height of the grass wasn't such an issue for her.

"Greetings, little one. Would you like a path cleared for you? Heading over to meet the others? We can go together." She said with a quirked smile. May as well make her own presence known to this impromptu gathering. Could be fun. One never knew until they tried.

It was Kedehern's voice that reached his little ears first, and the encouragement served to push him harder. He was already laughing by the time he'd reached the halfway point, bouncing like a loaded spring, the grass tickling him and bending beneath his advances as his happy voice rang out on the air above the meadow. "I'm coming!" he called back breathlessly to the green-eyed yearling, and all of a sudden, another presence had drawn near, this one much closer, much larger. All he needed do was to look up, and he found himself paced with a doe he could only assume was an adult, she was so much larger. Her eyes were gold, like his were, and he was so suddenly distracted that he lost his already clumsy footing and went tumbling into the grass.

A surprised bleat escaped him, but he wasn't down long. He rolled right back to his feet, shaking his head and tail before starting to move forward again. "Yes, I wanted to see who was over here. Someone was saying hello." he informed, though he was sure she could probably see who was on the other side. "Let's go together, yes. I'm Carmintine." he added quickly, realizing that this was the first deer he'd met since, well...ever. That was a funny thought, but he didn't dwell on it very long. He was much more interested in getting across to where Kedehern, and, now that he could see a bit better, a very big male deer, were standing.

User ImageKoke tentatively made her way out of the forests protection into the bright sunlight that lit the grasslands. Ears alert and constantly on the move, they swiveled around to catch the faintest noise. Or in this case, the abundance of noise. It was a rare day when Koke came across more than one of her brethren in a few hours, never mind more than two together at once. Yet from her vantage she could see almost a half a dozen deer in the field. Her sky blue pupils drifted from one to another; Over the dark of a doe as it paced beside a clumsy fawn of even darker tones, the beige and dun of a full-sized buck and its younger companion sporting brownish grey, but with the brightest emerald eyes Koke had ever seen. Lastly, her eyes settled on the yearling closest to her, a dozen feet off. Tinged with bluish grey's, and eyes the made of glowing ice.

Now she had to make a decision. Slip back into the forests shelter or approach the group.

She didn't give it a second thought as she left the safety of the forest and began to pick her way through the tall grasses. The bluish yearling was closest to her current position, so it was he who she headed for first. She approached slowly, and loudly, as to make her presence known. Once within speaking range, she addressed the yearling with her light, musical tone, "Hello, one of ice." It was one of this doe's particular habits to name things by their appearance, or at least an aspect of their appearance. For this pale buck to-be, it was his eyes that called out to her.

The energized spirit of the yearling was quite amusing to Athos, and had the older buck wearing a rather content and intrigued look upon his gentle features. Such a lively young stag, Kedehern was. It was refreshing to see. His warm gaze lifted to look to the other fellow's in question, only to see that a doe had joined the oncoming company. Seemed like deer were just sprouting up from the very plain they were in! Looking from her two the two youths, he decided to slowly approach as well, taking his time though, so as to give them a chance to greet one another first.

On his advance he glanced to the blue eyed buck again, almost prepared to call out to him to join as well, since it wasn't always nice to be left out... but it seemed he had company now. Yet another doe had joined him. Well that was good. His gait took him close enough to where he stopped a respectful distance from the gathering group, not wanting to rudely interject with his presence.

With the appearance of the doe, Kedehern came to a momentary halt. He waited with ears forward and eyes glowing with excitement for the two to reach his position. It didn’t take long for them to get close enough for easy interaction, the yearling grinning first at the dark fawn and then the doe that had accompanied him. “You made it!”

He was bouncing with energy, and with a proud toss of his head he announced, “I’m Kedehern!” It had been too long since he’d met someone new. He could tell already that they were all going to be the best of friends. With that thought, he glanced around to make sure Athos was also joining them.

After smiling at the stag, he took a few steps forward, intending to press his eyes nose against Carmintine’s.

At the youngster's trip and tumble, Fjotli slowed to a stop, looking back to see him simply hop right back up. She lingered until he had caught up with her once more. "Yes, together. Let's go say hello." The doe echoed with a smile as she took to trotting over toward the gathered two or three bucks, adult and yearling alike. Ah, and another doe a ways off too. "Carmintine, my name is Fjotli. It is nice to meet you."

As the young gray buck came into view, her trot eased to a slow and easy walk, letting little Carmintime meet yearling first. She nodded him and to the fully antlered buck behind him. The doe flicked her tail back and forth as straightened herself. So, his name was Kedehern. That's two new deer that she's come to meet.

Uncertain of whether or not Kederhern had overheard her introducing herself to the fawn, so the doe took the opportunity to introduce herself properly, perhaps even loud enough for the older buck to hear too. It wouldn't do to have to keep repeating and repeating herself. "Hello, gents. I'm Fjotli. It's certainly something, isn't it? All of us here." She gave a light chuckle. "I think so anyway."
