s**t, this turned out to be more of a rant than I'd expected.

I've been browsing alot of video game forums lately in a slump over which game to shell out my money on next, and lately I've been seeing people list the likes of Zelda and Kingdom Hearts as RPGs.

In my experience, RPGs have been the number games. Your characters have a numerically valued health, as do monsters. Your character's hit points are displayed as a number on the menu and battle screens. They gain statistics based on experience gained from the monsters they kill, not from bosses or hidden extras they find.

I am not bashing either Zelda or Kingdom Hearts, or any other similar action/adventure game; I like the Zelda games, and keep an open mind about Kingdom Hearts, but in my opinion, they are not RPGs in the traditional sense, though I know Kingdom Hearts tries, for all of the characters from overrated final fantasies in it. (Honestly, the Disney characters are its saving grace, not the shallow-as-a-puddle, cookiecutter prettyfaced emo kids from Final Fantasy (Any number >6)).*

Discuss:
- Can Action/Adventure be classified as RPG?
- Any overhyped games you wish to air your grievances about?
- Do I have a clue what I'm talking about, deprived of sleep at 4 in the morning?
- Zelda x Malon slash fiction Energy drinks.
* I hear Setzer is going to be in KH2. I'm seriously considering stomaching the likes of Tidus and Cloud to see him, as he is the epitome of awesome.

I classify the likes of Zelda and Kingdom Hearts as "action RPGs". Which is pretty middle-of-the-road and wussy, I know. xd Although by your definition of an RPG, Kingdom Hearts is definitely one - the characters and enemies have visible HP and other stats, and you level up by fighting monsters and bosses. There's just the case of the non-turn-based stuff and the platformer-style exploration that makes it less of an RPG, IMO.

Yeah I totally agree they are more action rpgs they are not traditional based turn based style your used to in most platform games. I also sometimes like to call them hack and slash rpgs. There fun games though.

I actually had this very same argument with a friend of mine.

Basically I said that waaaay back in the day when things were simpler, Zelda counted as an RPG. I mean, it has inventory, you have to find better weapons and get some armor, fight bosses, find heart containers. Your game is saved because it takes so long and there are items you must aquire.

Action games needed more... movement. Mario was a classic action game. It was side scrolling and you ran and jumped. There is no inventory, and you just keep moving on level after level. Also, you have a certain amount of lives after which you have to start completely over. Your game is not saved.

It wasn't until I found Final Fantasy and the like when I started thinking about RPG's differently.

And then Zelda 2: The Adventures of Link COMPLETELY confused me... I mean it has side scrolling and lives tallied up in the corner. Yet it has an inventory and spells and something of a story...

So action RPG is a good title for those hybrids I think. Although Zelda seems to have moved more into a puzzle action type game. It's always been different and not easy to label. I'm sure the developers like it that way as much as FF designers like to find ways to work Cid and Biggs and Wedge into the game. xd

I don't think action adventure can be classed as an rp sweatdrop
I've never played Zelda or Kingdom Hearts cause I'm not keen on RPGs to be honest. I played Zelda when it was on the old Gameboy lol sweatdrop xp

But it's not action adventure, it's an Action RPG. WHy can't you make up a new name for the category?

It's all completely arbitrary. whee
