It was the day after rain, and Candy Dandy was enjoying the sunshine that was poking through the remaining cloud cover. Everything smelled wet, and the grass left trails of moisture on Candy's hooves as she walked around puddles left in the ground.

She had spent all day inside, insisting to her mother and father that she was bored out of her mind, and there was nothing that she could do about it. Much of her time was spent with her face against the window, silently willing the rain to stop pitter pattering against the glass under her cheek. It hadn't let up when she went to bed, and she fell asleep to the roof clattering under the force of the water. But upon her awakening, the young filly found that the rain had stopped, and after a hurried breakfast, and run outside into the fresh air.

Now she was reveling in the outdoors, breathing deeply and loving every minute of not being inside.

Candy Dandy's sister, Bohemian Raspberry, was not having a good day. Despite the fact that her family life was wonderful and nurturing, outsiders often took her short haircut and off the wall ramblings as "weird" instead of her preferred descriptor, "creative." She'd gone down to the playground not too far from their house to play on the swings and pretend she was flying, but she'd managed to once again run into the neighborhood bullies.

These encounters never ended well. There's an old traditional belief about green-eyed redheads, and while Boho's hair was actually pink, it often held true. She was a scrapper when it came down to it. Right now, the tĂȘte a tĂȘte was in its early stages- the yelling stages, where she got to practice shouting words she'd picked up from Nine Inch Nails albums. But there were three of them and one of her and no way this was going to end well.

She was reveling in splashing through the puddles when Candy was sure she heard shouting. This put her puddle jumping on pause as she tilted her head to one side, trying to locate just who was causing such a disturbance on a lovely rain-free day. Finally her curiosity got the best of her, and she trotted off toward the sounds of fighting.

What she found certainly did not make her little heart happy. Her sister, Bohemian Raspberry was is quite the shouting match with a trio of mean looking foals. Two colts and a filly were shouting back, getting closer and closer.

Candy Dandy wasted no time, she ran toward her sibling and skidded to a halt in the mud a foot or two away.

"What's going on?" she said cheerfully, hoping to break the tension between the factions before things got rough.

"Candy!" Boho shouted, glad for the backup. "These cretins said my chalk drawing was graffiti and then they SPLASHED it and now I'm doing what the papers call responding to critics but what I call telling a bunch of no-good buttheads that they've got the aesthetic sense of a blind bumblebee."

"So in other words," the strange filly said, "the freak's being a freak. Nothing new." Just then, the largest of the colts swiped a bunch of mud at the two sisters. The bulk of it hit Bohemian Raspberry square in the face, and for a horrible moment, it looked as though the little spitfire was going to actually cry. The others laughed with that high-pitched, shrill mocking laughter that only schoolyard bullies can pull off. Bohemian Raspberry was either going to break down or lash out, one of the two. It was one thing to pick on her, but trying to throw mud at her sister? That wasn't gonna fly. Nuh-huh. No way.

Candy frowned, not liking the situation at all. Ruining a drawing that someone worked very hard on was pretty mean, and they were calling names to boot! While she didn't quite understand everything Boho has said, particularly the part about the aesthetic sense, she knew her sister was in trouble, and that mean sticking up for her!

She was about to open her mouth when one of the colts decided to kick mud toward them. Candy squealed, feeling the mucky stuff hit her legs. Boho got the worst of it though, and she watched as her sister's eyes to see if she would cry.

"That wasn't very nice!" she shouted, stamping her hoof. Her eyes narrowed and she eyed each of the bullies in turn.

"Why did you wreck her drawing? She wasn't hurting any of you...were you Boho?" She sincerely hoped that was the case. Granted, even if she was tormenting the bullies, Candy still had to stand up for her. That's what sisters do.

Boho's face twisted into a grim smile, like the kind that showed up on the action hero's face right before he went all Rambo on somebody's bottom. Mud dripped down from her curls. "Not. Yet!" she shouted, then launched herself at the big colt. "Nobody throws mud at my sister!" The colt was a good head taller than she was, and outweighed her by at least half- she'd always been kind of scrawny- but she was fighting for family here, and there was no way he was getting out of this without a black eye.

The strange filly shrieked as the other colt jumped into the fray, trying to pull the kicking, flailing earth filly off of his compatriot. Mud was getting flung everywhere, and it was a little difficult to see what was going on.

Oh dear....

Candy knew that look on Boho's face before she had moved a muscle. That was the look she got when things were about to get physical. And sure enough it did. Suddenly she and two colts were rolling in the mud, coats becoming a uniform brown. Candy Dandy gasped as the other filly shrieked. Oh this wasn't good, not good at all....

Should she join in? She knew her mother wouldn't be happy with them at all. Her father might congratulate . But Boho was her sister...

Candy Dandy took a deep breath, as if she were jumping into a pond, then let out a wordless yell. She jumped into the fray, picking a leg that didn't look like her sister's and biting down hard. There was a howl, and the leg started thrashing back and forth, swinging Candy into the mud and back out again. The filly outside of the fray started yelling, though what she was saying, Candy didn't know. She was concentrating on holding on.

"Candy! Look out!" Boho called as she kicked and bucked at the non-sisterly bodies. She hadn't really planned on jumping into a fight, and hadn't exactly developed an exit strategy. Three on two was better than three on one, but it still wasn't quite balanced. But she was fighting for her sister now, and so when she brought her hoof into the colt's jaw and heard a crack, she followed through with the swing.

The bully didn't know what had hit him, other than the insane pink filly he'd been picking on earlier. All he knew was that he was in a lot of pain- and something felt funny in his mouth...

His TOOTH! She'd CHIPPED his TOOTH! As tough a front as he'd put on, he couldn't help himself- the tears came anyways.

As soon as he started crying, the fight dispersed. The colts ran off, the filly following them, turning back just for a moment to snarl "You'll regret this," at the sisters before following them. Boho knew that she was supposed to feel like apologizing- but she absolutely did not. Instead, she turned to her sister, concern in her eyes.

"You ok, Candy?" she said, looking her sister up and down for cuts and bruises. "We sure showed them whatfer!" She was a bit of a mess; there was a mean-looking shiner on her foreleg, and her hair was a disaster- but she was grinning. They'd won that fight, and they'd done it together.

Candy's jaw was starting to hurt, and she finally let go of the colt's leg just as Boho called out for her to watch out. She felt a jolt in her rump, and knew she was going to have a bruise for a cutie mark for a couple of days.

Eventually the bullies make a break for it, shouting all the while. Candy Dandy was thoroughly covered in mud which was quickly drying. She knew they would have to wash off before going home, or else their parents would have a fit!

She nodded, testing each leg for stiffness. "Yeah, I think I am alright. Maybe a couple bruises here and there, but nothing broken." She stretched her neck, just in case, and only found mud hindering her movement. She smiled as Boho reveled in their victory. "We sure beat them! And they were bigger than us to boot!" Candy went for a hoof bump, knowing her sister wouldn't leave her hangin.

She shook her head, feeling her mane clump into unruly chunks. She giggled, giving up on shaking her mane back to normal.

Boho started to laugh as she bumped her sister's hoof back. "Dude, Mom and Dad are gonna kill us for this." Well, maybe not kill. At the best, chew them out. Boho could handle that, she'd been chewed out before- "But no worries; I'll take most of the heat. I mean, I'm the one who jumped in there. It was, after all, my fault. But it's nice to know that you've got my back, even when my temper gets the better of me. Now c'mon, let's go home and clean up a bit; I have a feeling it won't be so bad if we can get cleaned up and not track mud on the carpets."

Candy shook her head, saying "Well MOM is going to kill us. Dad might just ask us what the other ones look like if we ended up like this." she giggled.

"Are you kidding? I can't let you take the blame for this. I'm the one that jumped in after you instead of getting someone to help." No Candy wouldn't allow her sister to get reprimanded without taking some of the blame herself. That's what sisters did; they looked out for eachother and they shared the blame equally.

She nodded and chased after Boho as they went to clean up. The mud would come off, but the bruises certainly wouldn't.
