Laughing Shadow, the revered storyteller-in-training, has been gone for quite a while on the traditional quest that each of her kind must take in order to receive the title of Kazkar.
While she has been away, the Untime has fallen over the valley. The pack is diminished; the land is nearly devoid of life; and everyone’s tempers are at their breaking point. The alphas are trying to keep things together. However, the Dhraga has grown ill, not only in body but also in mind, and the Dha, Silent Blaze, has been quietly taking up the mantle of leadership. So, against her mother’s wishes, she sends out the Drugo and Druga on Search to recruit fresh blood. The solstice approaches and the princess smells change on the wind.
Laughing Shadow returns, bringing a new male called Twilight Morning with her. This causes dissent among the pack. Tradition dictates that only the Drugo and Druga are allowed to choose new pack members, but when he courageously proves his worth in his Fire Trial to become a Sargas, the pack realizes that change is truly coming to their lives again.
The Drugo, Frost Shatter, finds an upstart named Midnight Haunt on Search and brings him back, along with others(to be named later) for their Fire Trials. Even though the Dha is betrothed to Frost Shatter, Midnight Haunt has his sights on her, and Frost Shatter himself may have found a mate more to his liking while on Search...
The Solstice draws ever closer, but Silent Blaze is uneasy. Will the new blood strengthen the pack, or bring about its downfall?
