Why can't people see 20 year old University students as responsible for their own well being? Capable of making their own decisions regarding their safety and the safety of others.
We just moved in to our new place in Victoria, since classes start next week. And our landlady wanted to talk to us, just to set out some basic things, Like whose paying her the monthly rent check.
The start of the conversation seemed to be included in the disappointment that my roommate's mom had gone home. Seemed like she would have preferred to meet the parents as opposed to treating us like adults.
Then she started the conversation by saying we aren't allowed to have overnight guest, Which we have a complete problem with, because if we have someone over and they get intoxicated we're not letting them drive home so we'll either have them stay the night to sober up or call them a taxi. (she didn't let us know any of this when we asked her about it before renting the place)
Though she did then confuse us by saying we can have family over because they're responsible for us. or something like that. And then I guess she said people from out of town can come stay with us for a weekend. But still She should have said I don't allow my tenants to have guest over and we would have found a different place.
We had a bunch of other things to ask about but after being told this we were thrown for a loop and couldn't remember everything we wanted to ask about.
So I feel that if she wanted to deal with the parents of the students she should have said so, but she should treat us like we're capable of making responsible choices. We aren't going to give long term boyfriends keys to the place and have them move in and suddenly a three bedroom place fits 6 people. We're also not going to invite people over that make us feel uncomfortable or give them keys. So all the stuff she was concerned about seemed so stupid, but it's kinda made us feel a little down for the day.
Though we read the tenancy act rules and guidelines and she can't kick us out for having guest over, though she can if they are too noisy, which we understand be respectful in terms of noise level and we would be.
What we didn't know is that noise travels in the vents in the living room and she can hear all our conversations. So she should have just told us that. or knock on the door and let us know if we're too loud and we'll quiet down or move somewhere else.
We hope once we're settled into classes and she starts to learn we're pretty hard working students, and don't party endlessly that she'll lighten up and understand that we'll have someone stay overnight a couple times a month, because we're not going to be irresponsible host. Nor do we want to not have a social life, and it would be nice to be able to see boyfriends every once in a while. And she can't actually do anything if we have someone over.

You really shouldn't feel to down about that....Most adults think 20-25 year old are just immature (mainly because some still go out and party)...I'm going to be 24 this year and most people sill tell me I'm a kid. I really thought that when I hit 21 people would start to except that I was an adult. I can honestly tell you that when people are 10- 30 years older then you they will still see you as a kid.
All you can do is try to be as respectful as possible to this lady and show her how (adult) you guys can be...that is what I'm learning from the people around me at least xD
So I guess I wish you luck with this landlady o.o

She also already broke our we paid rent of half of august. By having people live here past the 15th, so really we should be demanding 600 dollars back, but we're just gonna forget about that. So it's just feels a little out of order, and it's a lot harder when you're barely a foot in being told all these policy's when we really should have known them before hand.

People our age do get loud but It wouldn't have made any difference if a parent was there. You guys are staying there not them. Anyways I have to go look for a box full of foreign coins right now and if I could, I'd say more things but I can't , I'll check back in later.

Roisu Oh my god, that is so awful! I'm so glad my apartment managers have always treated me like an adult... I'm hoping once she gets to know us as the responsible students that we are, she'll begin to realize that it won't be a loud crazy party every night. Also once our heads are all refocused we are probably going to get a tenancy agreement signed so we can know what we can and cannot get away with. Also then we'll be able to fully in force the rental agreement act, where she actually has no rights to tell us we can't have guest overnight as long as they don't move in on the tenancy.

Dumb. At least you don't have to pay 40 dollars in late fees because when I went to go pay rent for the month yesterday (Since they are not opened on the weekends and monday was a holiday) they told me it was late and I or my brother have to pay 40 dollars in late fees. So stupid.
Well now we know, since this is the first time we are paying monthly, rather than 6 months in advanced.

So our rent is due the first of every month so the checks all say October 1st, Novembet 1st, and December.

But I went in the office on the 4th of September and they said it was late since we had only up til the 3rd of the month. But I was confused since the first was on a Saturday and the 2nd was Sunday, and the 3rd was a Holiday so the office wasn't opened at those times. But they told us to use the drop thingy or something if they aren't opened.
