_◦_ Under and Above ~ A Story of Two Worlds_◦_
Written by Teddy Bear Cupcake and Irako of the Desert

There are two worlds in every one. Neither of them are less vast, less rich, less varied, or less dangerous. To both themselves, and each other. This is the reason they are two worlds. But when two of these worlds collide, one on land, and one in the sea, the danger soon follows. From both sides.

One world is Under. Under the water, under the sea, under the air and land, under humans. It goes down, deep into depths never explored by the fragile bodies and minds of humans. That is where the siren lives. That is the world of Va'laria'lutgur'lian to Moshi'ngor'nal.

The other is Above. Above these dark depths, above the water and the grass itself. Above where the air rules the lives, where humans are, who use legs and feet. It can rise up, farther and farther until it cannot be seen by even the keenest eyed creature. That is where the human lives. That is the world of Caspian Jules Thomas.

The collision of these two worlds was inevitable, written by fate, or God, or some power that is yet unknown to us all. And when it happens it sparks the worst in both of these worlds. Greed. Anger. Fear. But, as though a glimmer of hope, inside this very story, lies the best of both worlds. Sacrifice. Courage. Love.

Character Name: Caspian Jules Thomas
Age: 19
Height: 5'10
Weight: 155lbs

Physical Description: Caspian's original hair color is a light brown, but agreed, at comb point, to dye it black along with his twin sister, Earwyn Nadia. He's slender, but has strong legs due to all the swimming he does. He wears glasses, but often wears contacts as well, though unlike his sister, they are not colored contacts. He dresses pretty simply, once again, different from his sister, in t-shirts with a flannel on cooler days.
Personality: He's the calm twin. Though Caspian tends to take things slowly, he also understands the need for haste, such as when cramming for a test he forgot about. For the most part he's responsible, yet free-spirited. He's very much a dreamer, but keeps one foot in reality.
Likes: Drawing, Reading, Swimming
Dislikes: People who are too hyper or too laid back, Greed, Fish bones
History: Caspian Jules and his twin sister Earwyn Nadia (known as Caspian and Nadia to everyone except their mother) have lived in the same boat house on the same beach their entire lives. They don't know who their father is, as their mother never talks about him. The two were almost identical until puberty hit, but even then the eye color and hair colors were exactly the same. Caspian, being the older twin, has often found himself looking out for his sister, who in turn, became an eccentric person, making their personalities much more different. Just about a year ago Nadia made Caspian dye his hair black when she accidentally made too much dye.

Character Name:Va'laria'lutgur'lian to Moshi'ngor'nal or Valery Mosinn
Age: 253
Height: 5'2"
Weight: 120lbs.

Physical Description: She's small and lithe, oozes sensuality without batting an eye, and has dozens of minute scars all over her body. Her lush figure disguises the very real muscle underneath, and hints more at her extraordinary flexibility.
Personality:She is quite aware of her seductive nature and enjoys exploiting it. Having lived for so long without morals, she now constantly struggles with differentiating between right and wrong. She has an insatiable curiosity and is constantly trying to learn more about everything. In this, she truly admires humans and their ability to build on previous generations of experience. As a former hunter of them, she is well-versed in human behaviors and how to manipulate them them to her advantage.
Likes: Learning, books, sushi, warmth, and movies
Dislikes: dry air, tangled hair, being kept in ignorance, and boats
History: Her father was a merman, her mother a Siren. When she was born, her mother killed him for her to feed on as her first sustenance. Her mother then taught her all the secrets of the Sirens. One of the things that she learned is that a Siren's voice can do much more than lure men to drown. Depending on the songs one sings, a Siren can make anyone fall in love with her, despise their friends, hallucinate, or run willingly into death's arms. She just has to know how to sing the right song.

She learned fast and her mother became afraid of her. She tried to kill Valery with death songs, but the one weakness of the Siren's voice is that if it can't be heard, something can't be affected by it. Valery merely plugged her ears and ripped out her mother's throat. Then she went to other Sirens and learned their songs. Once she had gained all their knowledge, she killed them. Now, she is the most knowledgeable Siren in the world.

A human despot who lived near the sea heard of her and sent men out with offerings of treasures and a request for her voice. She killed the men and took the treasure, but was amused by the letter he'd sent with them. She appeared to him as a naked women in his throne room and sang a death song to him. He had been prepared for her, though, and was unable to hear her. Instead, he wrote her notes saying that he would pay her to kill a troublesome noble stirring up rebellion. She accepted, impressed by this human's cunning and curious about the human world. With her voice, she sang songs of love and seduction, making the rebellious noble fall in love with her. When she had gained his trust, she lured him to water and drowned him.

Her reputation grew and she became a sought-after assassin by those who wanted to frighten their enemies. With so many requests, she became rich. She began to experiment with creating her own songs and would test them on targets.

For a long time, she continued in this fashion. Her obscene wealth gained her whatever she wanted in the way of entertainment and lovers. It was fun for a few decades, but she began to feel something missing that no amount of death, wealth, or companionship could fulfill. She began to roam the world, no longer accepting contracts of assassination, driven by the emptiness to find something that would fill it up.

Et Cetera: She's vain about her hair, and loves wearing it loose when on land. Normally, in the sea, she has to keep it bound or risk it turning into impossible snarls.

"Caspian Jules, if you're not going to help, you could at least get out of the way." Caspian shook his head out of the daydream he had found himself in. Brought back to the real world, he was standing in the kitchen of the small boat house he, his sister, and his mother lived in. His mother was bustling around, chopping vegetables here, carving fish there, while Earwyn Nadia, his twin sister, was standing, trying to keep a large pot of water balance while their mother tossed ingredients inside. "I'm serious." his mother said as she passed by him once again.

Caspian edged his way out of the kitchen, looking back once at Nadia's jealous face as he left her to her arm-paining job. Smiling to himself Caspian jumped down off the wooden boardwalk that led to their home. Sand jumped from the beach into his sneakers, but he payed it no mind. There was one week left of summer vacation before his and Nadia's senior years of high school started, and Caspian felt like he needed to treasure it greatly. Nadia was lucky enough to have inherited their mother's cooking abilities and had already worked out a job with the local food market on the beach. Caspian, now in his last year of school, still didn't know what he was planning to do with his life.

He made his way along the beach, listening to the waves as they washed up on the shore. He loved the ocean, just like his mother and sister. They had lived beside it as long as he could remember, in the same little boat house. Though the house seemed much smaller now than it did years ago. His mother had always said she felt some kind of connection to the ocean. As if that wasn't obvious naming her children Caspian Jules Thomas and Earwyn Nadia Thomas. Caspian had to admit though, his name was easier to pronounce than Nadia's.

A ways down the beach he finally stopped, sitting down in the sand. It was evening and the sand had cooled from the noon sun, as the moon was rising the sky while the sun had begun it's glorious decent across the waters.

Va'laria'lutgur'lian to Moshi'ngor'nal

Va'laria'lutgur'lian struggled to dodge the sharks attempting to rush her yet again as she strove for shallower waters, hating the scent of her own blood mingled with the ocean's salty waters that drew them. A few had already made new slices with their razor teeth along her arms. The loss of blood was making her slow, and she knew it was only a matter of time before the excited predators went into a blood frenzy.

She dove down suddenly, another shark just barely missing her tail fins, and her elbow brushed rough sand unexpectedly, sending up a little puff of silt in the water that sparkled in the last rays of the setting sun. Immediately, she began grabbing handfuls of it and throwing it around in the water to create a screen much like an octopus left ink in the water to confuse those that would hunt it. Jagged pieces of shell and glass sliced her hands, mixed in as they were with the sand, but she didn't care. So much of her blood was already in the water that a little more wouldn't hurt. It would confuse the sharks for a moment, and that could be just long enough for her to escape.

She began swimming madly for shore, hugging the sand and using powerful strokes of her tail to send more sand swirling upward in the water. Soon, she could feel the push and pull of waves above her, and knew she was almost there. In a moment, her tail broke the surface of the water with a loud smack and she surged upward to pull in the air and force the switch from gills to lungs that would also trigger the revealing of her legs. A sharp ache and she was stumbling naked up the wet sand in the dark.

Once she made her way past the tideline, she collapsed in sheer relief. Sand was getting into her wounds, making them burn, and she knew she had to clean them with freshwater somehow. As the adrenaline from her flight began to fade, though, exhaustion came sweeping over her like a tidal wave, and she couldn't muster the strength to move.

Lovely. I, the greatest Siren of all, will die of blood loss or infection, laid low by a drunk's stupidity.

Who wouldn't be surprised at finding a beautiful, naked woman lying on the beach, surrounded by her own blood. Caspian was.

Upon hearing some sort of ruckus, he had pushed himself up from his position lying in the sand. Sand bits had gotten inside his glasses and he was momentarily blinded when he sat up, missing whatever might have caused this...strange appearance. After wiping the dirt from the lenses of his thick framed glasses, he saw her, lying as though dead. At first a feeling of panic washed over him. She was dead...and naked...on his beach... Being the only man living in the boat house some ways down the beach it seems most should be able to understand the panic that shot through him. Caspian slowly rolled to his knees, small shells and pebbles hiding in the sand stung his skin as he sat heavily for a moment. Finally he stood and moved, slowly as though she could awaken at any moment, toward the woman.

Then he noticed she was alive.

Her breathing was shallow, but there was a definite movement in the slender back. Though she needed help, and badly by the looks of it, Caspian found himself captivated by her. There was something unnatural about it...about her. Something...inhuman. Though it was only minutes that he stood, head cocked to the side, it seemed like hours. Only with a pure force of will was he able to pull himself out.

As a child Caspian had poked fish with sticks alongside Nadia, but Nadia had always done it first. And this was no fish. Instead Caspian knelt down beside her, and with a slow, shaky hand, tried to find her pulse. It was there, weak as it was. With no cell phone, nor landline at the house, the only way to call for help was the payphone at the end of the boardwalk. Caspian didn't think it wise to leave her lying there however, she seemed unconscious. He gently touched her head, hoping to wake her up if she was strong enough to open her eyes. It would be better if she were awake before he left her.

Va'laria'lutgur'lian to Moshi'ngor'nal

Va'laria's eyes snapped open as a gentle touch on her head brought her back from the brink of unconsciousness. Strength returned with the adrenaline rush, and she managed to push herself upright. This effort exhausted her once more, though, and she slumped forward, shoulders sagging. Her brief glimpse of this newcomer had revealed a young human. Had she been at full strength, uninjured, and had all her wits about her, she would have begun to sing to him in order to force him to take care of her. However, weak as she was from pain and blood loss, the only thing she could think to do was reach out imploringly and say, "Help me. Please."

It was then that she passed out fully this time, falling back down to the sand in an ungraceful heap.

Caspian almost fell over when the woman spoke. "Uh...." was all he managed out before she collapsed again. It was very much a well now what? moment. Caspian was stronger than he looked. Swimming your entire life in the ocean will do that. He didn't think it would be that difficult to carry the woman to his house, but the naked part did seem like an issue. Caspian hadn't actually ever seen a woman naked, much less ever touched one. Promiscuity was Nadia's thing.

Finally he decided he'd have to head back home for something to cover her. Pulling off his shirt, he tugged at a rip with his teeth, tearing the thing in half. Gingerly, trying not to look too much, he laid the cloth over her, one piece covering her backside, the other placed around her shoulders.

He got back home, completely out of breath, and soaking as he climbed onto the porch on the back. The back of the house was actually an extension of the boat, a porch built in the water and two rooms connected. Though the boat house was big enough for the three members of the family to live in comfortably, Nadia, upon reaching those teenage years, had insisted on more privacy. Caspian hadn't argued. The deck and rooms were built soon after, much helped by the twins, being a part of the deal that they helped.

He entered into his room, searching frantically through his things to find a blanket or something like it to wrap around the body on the beach. The door suddenly opened, and Nadia stormed in. "I don't believe you!" she snapped.

"Nadia! This is my room." Caspian jumped.

"I don't care. You left me! Just freakin' left me!"

Caspian hurriedly tried to hush her. "Nadia, shush. Look, do you have any spare cloths?" he looked at her skinny jeans and long sleeves shirt.[ "Maybe something looser?"

Nadia shut up. She raised her eyebrows, "Finally into the cross dressing thing?"

Caspian blushed, "No!" he turned back to his drawer, and explained everything to his sister, from the finding, to the captivation, to her regaining consciousness. "Just give me some clothes and call someone."

Nadia jumped up from her seat on the bed. "No! I don't believe I have to explain this to you of all people. You must have met a siren!" Her eyes were shinning. At Caspian's look she immediately became defensive. "They are real you know. Give me a sec. I'm going to change and I'll come and look. I bet I can prove it." She disappeared before Caspian could argue, coming back a few moments later in her swimsuit; a black bikini top and black and white swim-shorts. Ignoring his protests, Nadia dived into the water out the deck. He had no choice but to follow her.

Back at the site, Nadia summed up the situation. "Watch." she told him. Getting on her knees, Nadia grabbed the woman under her arms and dragged her to the water. Caspian almost yelled to her to keep her from drowning, but strangely as soon as the woman was in the water, her head under, the legs changed. "Now." Nadia said, showing no shock at the discovery. "We can just swim her home." she rolled her eyes at Caspian's hesitation. "Fine, I can swim her home. You go ahead and grab my extra swimsuit from my top drawer. I'll cover her for you."

Caspian was waiting for her, his legs dangling over the side of the wooden porch. Nadia came up, swimming strongly with her arms clasped around the woman's torso. He tossed her the top and Nadia attached it. She let go of the woman and climbed up next to Caspian.

"What are you doing?" Caspian asked as the woman sunk.

"It's okay big brother." Nadia rolled her eyes, "Do you remember any of the old stories? She's got gills. I could freakin' feel 'em when I was swimming."

Va'laria'lutgur'lian to Moshi'ngor'nal

Va'laria dreamed she was being rocked by the waves as a babe again. Her mother held her pressed against her breast as the ocean currents swayed around them in a gentle, soothing motion. Va'laria felt warm in her mother's arms, warm in a way that was mostly impossible in the cold vastness of the sea. She felt happy and content as her mother sang a sweet lullaby.

Then she felt cold again and was suddenly alone. The gentle ocean current had turned to raging storm-whipped torrents. She was grown now and hurled to and fro like a limp bit of seaweed in hurricane winds. Va'leria could not swim to deeper, safer waters, and there was nothing to hold onto.

Va'leria flailed back to consciousness, a cloud of bubbles erupting from her mouth as she released the leftover air from her lungs in a soundless cry of fear. She inhaled water accidentally, and the saltwater seared her throat and filled her resonance chamber before she got herself under control again. Painfully and slowly, she managed to expel the water from her resonance chamber and throat. Water was flowing over her gills again, and her fins were back. Fortunately, most of her wounds had stopped bleeding, and the floodlights from above would scare off any sharks that scented what little of her blood escaped into the water.

She froze then, looking up in sudden panic at the floodlights. Floodlights meant humans, and she was sitting right beneath them underwater. She had been moved from the spot of her collapse on the beach, obviously, and now was in her mermaid form.

Oh, hell. That boy has seen me change. Now I'll have to sing him to death.

Regretfully, she swam up towards the lights and poked her head above the water. The boy stood on a wooden deck with a girl that looked very similar to him, and they seemed to be discussing her. Va'laria inhaled so that she could speak and was seized with a fit of coughing as her throat burned at the touch of air.

No, no, no, please, not my voice. I need my voice to escape!

She could not stop coughing, and she could feel each cough rip the tender tissues inside her throat and lungs even worse. Va'laria struggled over to the wooden porch and gripped the deckboards spasmodically to keep her head above water. Her tail flipped as she continued to cough, making the water around her swirl angrily.

Finally, she managed to get her rebellious throat and lungs under control, though they felt raw. Va'laria knew she would not be able to sing the humans under her control now, not with such a grievous injury. Simply speaking would be hard enough. Instead, she looked up at them, her expression grimly resolute. She was weakened from blood loss and could not use her Siren songs to manipulate the humans. Va'laria'lutgur'lian to Moshi'ngor'nal, the greatest Siren in all the oceans, was defenseless and for perhaps the second time in her life, was at the mercy of another being. She would face her fate without flinching, just as she had before.

Caspian and Nadia had been arguing. Caspian thought they needed help. Nursing a siren back to health could be dangerous. Nadia was firmly on keeping it entirely a secret, thinking anyone they told would try and steal the beautiful creature.

"What about mom." Caspian suggested.

Nadia simply gave him a look. "Really. Caspian Jules, what do you think she'd do! Probably scream, faint, then pretend like it never happened. Yes, loads of help that would be."

Caspian was about to make his reply when they heard a splash. Together the twins turned and looked at the water. She was awake. Caspian took a single step forward and Nadia put a hand on his shoulder. "Careful." she whispered.

They approached her together, Nadia looking posed to yank her brother and run if the siren began singing.

Caspian spoke to her. "We...aren't going to hurt you." he kneeled down on the deck, careful to not put out a hand or any extremity she could grab onto. Just before their argument, Nadia had shoved a book in his face, talking incredibly fast about how if she could, the siren would grab a hold of him, drown him, and then skin him. "My name is Caspian." he offered, having no idea what the mermaid etiquette for introducing oneself. "This," he turned partially to Nadia, keeping an eye on the siren, "Is Nadia."

Va'laria'lutgur'lian to Moshi'ngor'nal

Va'laria nodded at each of them warily. When she spoke, her voice was soft and hoarse instead of its usual rich and resonant tone.

"Call me Valery."

She gave a flip of her tail, causing her to surge up out of the water enough so she could seize the edge of the deck and pull herself up on it. She was still weak from blood loss, so it was a struggle to do such a simple thing. When her legs were out of the water, she inhaled again to force them back into a more human shape. Calmly, she began pointing at her various wounds.

"I was attacked by sharks. I must clean with fresh water so these don't become infected."

There were slices and cuts everywhere. Larger gashes were on her upper right arm, left calf, and upper back. Bruises of various sizes made dark splotches everywhere where deadly jaws had been avoided, but tails and fins had not. She looked up at Caspian imploringly.

"So long as I am not harmed, I will not harm you. Any help you give me, I shall repay."

She was about to add that she would repay the help she received and that such repayment would be multiplied tenfold if they kept her a secret, but her injured throat rebelled at so much abuse and she began coughing again.

"That is freaky." Nadia mumbled as Valery's legs changed again.

Caspian agreed, but chose not to say it out loud. "Uh...Nadia, do you have any...clothes? I mean, something that we...she, could use for bandages and stuff."

Nadia nodded, quickly disappearing into the house on a search. Caspian would have gone for the water, but he didn't want to leave Valery alone. For the most part, being the modest human he was, Caspian tried to avert his eyes from the naked siren. But there was something that always drew his mind toward her. Something more than just the fact that she was a beautiful, naked woman, asking for his help. If he had to guess, it was probably some kind of magic. Obviously Nadia was the one who knew better.

It was awkward, at least on Caspian's end, waiting in silence for Nadia to return, but finally she did. In her arms she carried a basin of water, presumably from the pump just up the deck. How she managed to get it past their mother, Caspian didn't know. Draped over her arm was an old, slightly ripped, skirt that their mother had given Nadia for important school events. Caspian wasn't sure she had ever worn it. In between her fingers, Nadia held onto a tube of disinfectant cream, though it wasn't nearly enough for all the wounds that littered Valery.

She set the basin down with an "oof" sloshing some of the water over on to the deck. Caspian moved his sneakered feat away from the puddle.

"Okay," she said straightening up, "There's some water, some cloth, and some of that little...cream stuff you're suppose to put on cuts." she whipped her hands off, brushing them past each other. "And mom says dinner is ready."

Caspian took a glance at Valery, looking at the many wounds. She wouldn't be able to leave in that state. And dinner would give him more time to think about what they needed to do, and decide whether this really was some kind of elaborate dream.
