Kataja had a hard time getting that strange male out of her mind. He must be lonely, since he always seemed to be scampering away from the heart of the pack. She let herself think over her little plan for a few days. Today was the day! She was going to do something about it. Offer a little olive branch of friendship.

Well, it wasn't an olive branch, per say. She thought that she found an ok bone, but she didn't know that much about them. It wasn't broken, which had to make it worth something. She had a full stomach (or as full as it would get out here), so she wouldn't be drooling over herself in case he had food with him. She was clean(ish), she felt like she was ready....it was time to do this!

She wandered around a bit, but had a really hard time finding him. After a while of wandering around in circles, it seemed that this wasn't the time to do this. She grew tired of walking around, and finally collapsed on some scraps of hide near some bones, not caring if it was someone's place. She just needed to cry a few tears of frustration before going back to her own spot.

Ibada was keeping busy. He seemed to have entirely forgotten all the strange encounters with ladies he'd been having lately- even Masuko was out of his mind as he frolicked around the graveyard, always by himself and always up to something. He had continued to steal away scraps of food, even after he learned the hard way that it wouldn't keep and would attract hungry visitors.. he was just more careful now.

He was on his way around to check on his various little hoards of bones when he walked right by Kataja. At first it seemed he didn't realize she was there, even with only a few feet between them. But then he did a double-take.

"Something wrong?" he asked, turning around and tilting his head at the tired looking female.

Kataja spooked for a moment, but then...she realized that he was right in front of her! "You!"

And it was in that moment that she realized that she didn't know his name.

Well, Kataja wasn't the smoothest hyena. She was mildly pudgy (though losing it fast in this environment), a klutz, a bit of a space cadet at moment, and a little too trusting of others. But. She'd make this work.

"I was looking for you! Actually. Um." How was she going to do this? "I have a gift for you!"

"Me?"

His voice was starting to lose the harsh rasp as he was forced into more social situations (though he was also doing more talking to himself at times). He still wasn't very quick to understand social situations and he still didn't look very approachable, though.

"You were?" he asked, tilting his head and wrinkling his nose when she said she was looking for him. Then she said she had a gift for him and he went from confused to excited to suspicious very quickly.

"What?"

Kataja's bobbed her head. "Well, I feel like I was a little rude the last time we were together, so I wanted to sort of make it up to you..." She rambled on a bit about nothing before coming back to focus on topic.

"But I think you like bones, and I found this one while wandering around. I don't know much about them, but its not broken. So its gotta be worth something right?" She was completely out of her element, but it didn't hurt to try.

She thrust out the femur bone in all of its clean, pristine glory.

Was she rude? He mentally stumbled back to when they had met, he had been sneaking away with some food and she had said she wasn't going to steal it.. and she didn't. He wasn't sure how any of that was rude.

He didn't get a chance to argue, though, because she was on the topic of bones. Ibada, though still somewhat mentally derailed by the idea of receiving a gift as an apology for imagined rudeness, nodded along with with her logic and then looked down to her offering with wide eyes.

It was a very, very nice bone.

And he was speechless.

Kataja's blue eyes darted from the bone to the brown hyena's face. Crap! She still needed to ask him for his name.

"Um. I hope its not a bad one." She was worried that he was offended, since she wasn't very good at reading him. He was strange, if a little likable.

"I forgot to introduce myself last time. Hunger can just...take my brain over. I'm Kataja." She smiled with a bit of a bob on her head, hoping that he still wasn't shocked over the horrible bone. Ugh, someday she'd have to have someone tell her why these bones were so interesting. She only liked them if they kept her safe.

Ibada looked back up with a smile when she introduced herself. It had been a long time since he'd had a pleasant interaction with someone but he seemed to have a vague sense of what was appropriate and what was not.

"I'm Ibada," he replied, knowing at least it was polite to introduce himself in return. His manners definitely needed work but he obviously meant well enough.

"This is a very nice bone," he added, "Where did you find it?"

Finally! It was nice to know his name now, and she figured that meant that they had some level of friendship. It opened up her world more. Now she didn't feel so alone, even if he wasn't quite someone she would come running to with her problems. She knew his name, and could be polite to him when they crossed paths.

"It was sort of where I sleep at night," the green hyena said with a shrug. "I think its a bit of a bone dumping ground with some of the other hyenas, since I don't have my own skull to sleep in." She wasn't strong enough to force another out of their's, but it wouldn't be that big of a problem until the rains came.

"I thought you might like it," she said with a bright smile.

He made a face when she said she didn't have a skull to sleep in, it reminded him how she had said she was bullied last time they met. It didn't sound like it was getting much better if she was sleeping where everybody just tossed spare bones. Now that he apparently liked this hyena, it bothered him more. And it already had bothered him, why else would he remember?

"I do like it," he said, "Why does everybody litter around your den?"

Or.. why would she stay where everybody littered. But that didn't sound like the most probable situation, it would be odd to purposefully pick that kind of area.. but then it was odd to purposefully discard bones at someone's den.

Kataja shrugged her shoulders. "I don't think they realize I sleep there," she laughed. "Its ok, I'll find a new place soon. I'm...still adjusting." More like she was still letting a few other meanies boss her around, but as she was now friendly with Ibada, and perhaps a few others, she was starting to feel more confident about her abilities. She may not be a fighter, but if she worked to make sure some of the other ones were full, she'd be able to get herself a better place to sleep.

"I'm glad. Its nice to be your friend, Ibada."

He was slightly relieved to hear it might be an act of ignorance, not malice but it still didn't sound right. But maybe it didn't matter, he didn't always take in the whole of a situation before reacting to it. And then she said something that sent his mind completely off track: friend.

Ibada wore a very serious expression as he considered this title for her. He didn't have any friends and so far, she was the best company he'd found around here, even from two very brief conversations. Friends weren't actually something he expected when he decided being part of the pack really was for the best. He expected tolerance at best.

"Really?"

Kataja's head tilted to the side. Was he confused over it? She felt like it shouldn't really surprise her, but it did.

"Yes. Is that ok?" She didn't want to force him into anything, but she figured that calling someone a 'friend' couldn't hurt.

He paused only long enough to sigh, seeming to make up his mind just at that moment. He was allowed to have friends- at least one, anyway.

"Yes."

Fin!
