Patience was pulling off. The pack seemed to be getting itself together again, and Mausko felt like she hadn't had to be too intimidating or brutal to get them to fall into place. Some of them seemed to even be enjoying themselves, between the scouts, guards, hunters, and bone collectors. Masuko made note that they were probably going to new a few more slaves soon. With so many content (or at least, seemingly content) hyenas, pups could only be just around the unseen corner. Slaves made good pup-sitters, as well as chew toys, and playthings. She walked confidently in the heart of the pack, making sure that she knew first hand how everything was going. There was no back-seat ruling in this pack, not anymore.

Chora didn't have any particular goals for the day so she was relaxing in the center of the pack, watching the goings-on around her. The pack was far more active now than it had been, it was pleasant to see. And it was nice to take advantage of her less active position just to enjoy how things had changed.
She smiled when she spotted her sister strutting by, evidently seeing how things were going herself as well. Already decided nothing terribly interesting was going on around them, she kicked a stone out towards her sister's paws to get her attention.

Masuko's violet eyes caught sight of the stone rolling in front of her, and she stopped. It didn't take her long to realize that it was her sister who had done it. Well, only her siblings or her mother could probably do something like that and not get a bitter growl in return.
"Chora," Masuko called in greeting as she walked closer to her pale sister. "What's going on?" Her question wasn't said in concern, merely in amusement that she didn't want to get up, and used a rock as her calling card.

She was tempted to roll around in the dust, having the peaceful, lazy day she was, but she stayed upright out of respect for her sister. As upright as she could, laying on the ground. Masuko wasn't really the type to appreciate it, she decided.
"Not much, Masuko," she said, smiling, "It's been quiet so far today, I don't expect you'll miss much if you relax and chat with me for a little while."

"Quiet is good," she agreed. She sat down near Chora, not really intent on laying down. "I am enjoying this peace. It has made is possible to bring back a sense of strength and calm to the pack, and old members are feeling much more comfortable."
She paused, enjoying the moment as she watched the going-ons of the pack. "To be honest," she finally said, "I won't be surprised if there's a sort of....population boom to come."

Chora was pleased when her sister sat down beside her and she nodded along with Masuko as she commented on the peace. It said a lot, she thought, that Masuko was willing to stop, sit down and appreciate it. She worked very hard to get this all together.
"Wouldn't surprise me, either," she agreed with a chuckle, "What about you? Have an eye on anybody in particular for a consort?"

Masuko shook her head. "I'm worried about picking someone so close to home. I know that there's another hyena pack out there. I've heard it spoken of between some of the ex-rogues. I'm going to see if I can create an alliance. Avoid all of this trouble again." She was not up for another disastrous war, though she would never forgive the lions what had happened that bloody day.
"Hopefully he won't be too much of an idiot," she grumbled as she shook her head. "What....about you?" She worried that is Chora found a mate, their relationship would change. Dramatically. It worried her, but she would never, ever voice it to her right-hand in command.

Hmm, an alliance was practical. And it sounded very much like Masuko, now she thought about it. She was surprised, however, to hear of another hyena pack.. perhaps she needed to pay a little more attention to what the members were talking about. It seemed reasonable to expect there were others but any worth gossiping about? Interesting.
"No," she said with a small smile, "But my rank doesn't make that necessary."
Of course, Masuko didn't have to take a consort or produce her own heir but it seemed the best way to have absolute control over the situation. Choosing an heir from unrelated young females would leave them with family alliances they couldn't control.

Masuko was a little surprised. There was a rush of relief, but also a bit of disappointment. Which was strange, considering that Masuko herself was not very maternal, and didn't think that Chora quite felt the same, but...she had less responsiblities, and so she had the luxury of bearing pups without the added stress of raising any of them to fulfill a certain roll.
Masuko didn't quite know how to respond, so she was silent for a moment.
"Well, we shall see what happens. I hope they send over someone decent, as well as a few other members. Diversity is needed in this pack, even with all the ex-rogues we've had joining lately."

"What if they don't?" she asked, genuinely curious about how Masuko would handle herself if she was presented with an unfit consort from another pack. How would an alliance fair in the face of something like that? She didn't doubt Masuko would find a way to get what she wanted but it would be tricky when dealing with outsiders.
"It will be interesting to see how it turns out," she added.

Masuko laughed. "I will make it work." And she knew that she would. "The only thing I need is an heir. It doesn't matter how he is. If he is awful, I will just send him back," she said with a wave of her paw. "I'll see how it is when he is here, otherwise we're just going around in circles like a pup chasing its tail."
At least there was a little mutual understanding over the idea of heir. The Mava'Bunda had never attempted to make an alliance before, and it would be interesting to see if they screwed it up or not. In the end, Masuko didn't know what she was doing, but she had faith that she would figure it out.

An heir was definitely the primary goal of taking a consort but shouldn't she worry about what blood the pup carried? Perhaps that would be the cost of the alliance. Chora believed her when she said she would make it work.
"Very good," she said, smiling, and letting the conversation transition back into quiet observation of the pack around them.
Fin!
