I've always had a bit of a reserved interest in Rome because my mom said that it was a nasty place. You're right that the photos don't suggest that at all though.
It's not that I had a bad time there - it just wasn't as good as all the other places. Maybe I'm too reserved to fall in love with the Italians.

The Colosseum and Vatican are impressive, I'll grant you that, but you also know what you're getting before you even arrive. I think the sites in some of the other cities were more impressive, both historically and visually, because they were a surprise. And with some of the famous attractions in Rome - the Trevi Fountain being a prime example - I was left wondering why they were so famous. It just felt like I was ticking off the boxes.
