Kadryn was determined to beat a dragon by herself. She wanted to show the other students and her teacher that classroom learning was no match for hands-on fights. She knew that she'd gotten stronger, much stronger, from her attempts at dragon slaying. But Miss Krelsiarla hadn't believed her when Kadryn had tried to tell her this that morning. She'd shaken her head and said that Kadryn was just attempting to make excuses for her ditching. Kadryn burned at the insult; that she was lying and being lazy... not learning and testing herself in the wilderness. Kadryn knew that an orb won by herself alone would make them see she wasn't being lazy, that she was trying her best to learn in her own way!
Fuming with righteous indignation, Kadryn forgot to keep an eye on her surroundings; her foot landed on something long, slippery, and round. As Kadryn slipped and fell on her back she found herself looking up at the dragon head peering down at her, curious as to what had stepped on its tail. Grinning happily at a dragon found so soon, Kadryn quickly rolled to her feet. A strange exhilaration filled her; no longer was she afraid of these large monsters, they could be beaten, and she could do it! Grabbing a rock as she stood up and launched herself at the dragon, Kadryn let loose a howl filled with the glee of battle.
That evening, she limped home gloomily. Her clothes were covered in mud and blood, with many cuts and rents from the dragon's claws and teeth. It had been a long battle, ending only with the dragon flying away after it had gotten tired of playing with the annoying pest who hurt. "Next time..." Kadryn muttered, looking behind her, "Next time I'll get an orb..." She wondered at herself, at her strange new happiness of danger and the thrill of battle. Was this normal? Did others get a kick out of fighting, even as they lost?
