Remarque had been a fan of mirrorwalking from the moment it had stopped making him dizzy. In the many months since he'd first learned, he'd gotten over the strange sensation that washed through his body every time he stepped through that mirror. Not only was it a quick method of transportation, but it allowed for near unpredictable entry. Of the many mirrors hidden throughout Destiny City, all of them were open doors to a Dark Mirror Senshi.

The downside to mirrorwalking was that you never knew who could be standing just outside the mirror.

It had never really been a problem for Eternal Sailor Remarque—merely an occasional inconvenience. Sometimes you walked out right in front of someone full of energy ripe for the taking. Sometimes you walked right out in front of a knight that just so happened to have a grudge against your kind.

Tonight, Remarque had come from the edge of town into the park, fully intending to take a leisurely stroll and waste some time before heading home. It was still far too early for bed and gathering a little extra energy—or just wasting some by walking around—was sounding like a good idea.

Even if he stepped out of the mirror only to immediately sense a senshi of slightly lower rank than himself. And she was close, on top of that. The glass of the mirror stopped rippling shortly after he stepped out, though he didn't move from it, instead choosing to brush himself off while he tried to identify where the senshi was without being too obvious about it.

Super Sailor Denebola had always been a bit reckless. Though she knew she shouldn't be out, alone, she found herself drawn to the streets to patrol. She had spent months avoiding powering up in favor of pursuing some semblance of normal life. She had spent too long skirting around the fact that she felt guilty as hell for technically abandoning her duties to the unsuspecting civilian population. This time she didn't have any sort of excuse for her absence except that she had acted cowardly, something that still didn't sit well with her.

So here she was, out on her own trying to make up for lost time.

It took her a moment to register the energy signal of someone else in the surrounding area. She paused in her brisk walk, frowning in confusion. It wasn't an energy signature that felt familiar, it wasn't as dark and out of control to her like a corrupted senshi nor did it have the feel of a negaverse agent. All in all it felt muted, hard to distinguish and unfamiliar. She didn't like things that felt unfamiliar.

She turned on her heel, head turning to glance around her surroundings. Though the energy signal felt muted it was strong and she had always been the curious type so without much hesitation she headed towards it. Sailor Denebola had no idea what awaited her once she found the source of the unfamiliar pulse but she couldn't help but seek it out.

After all, she had always been reckless.

It wasn't immediately that Remarque spotted movement out of the corner of his eyes, though Denebola's outfit contrasted enough with the environment that she wasn't necessarily hard to see. There wasn't really any dispute as to what he should do now that he could see her, so casually he turned his head to get a good look at the girl. She was new to him, even considering how many faces he'd seen during the ambush of the order meeting, though her power signature told him that she wasn't as new as he would have liked.

Still, she wasn't charging at him to attack—yet.

He moved in a casually slow manner, resting his hands on his hips. Senshi hardly stressed him out; he was still very clearly calm despite her presence. He figured she wasn't so far away that it would be awkward to address her, so he locked eyes with the senshi and greeted, "Evening."

Denebola hadn't been present at the order meeting, instead she had been visiting her brother in Seattle. Peter had moved months back and constantly pestered her until she caved and came to visit. Nothing had prepared her for how guilty she had felt for not only missing the meeting but for being unable to aid her fellow senshi when they were ambushed. It often seemed like she had been running away as of late.

She hated the idea of being a coward.

It was always what led her to be reckless.

She swore she felt him before she saw him. She couldn't explain it as anything other than instinct that led her to turn her heel, facing him as he spoke. Mismatched eyes gave him a once-over, confusion wrinkling her brow as she tried to make sense of his dark fuku. He didn't feel like a corrupted senshi, she knew what the energy signature of one felt like. His was different.

Besides, he didn't have a gaping whole in the middle of his chest, nor was his starseed out in the open. Exposed. She hadn't encountered one of his kind. Whatever it was. She looked him over again, suspicion written all over her face as she took a step back, wedges clicking against the ground. "Hello," she replied carefully.

She knew she ought to act with poise and approach the question threatening to leap out of her mouth carefully. But alas, she couldn't help herself and blurted it out anyway. "What are you?"

The question somewhat surprised Remarque, who would have assumed that any super senshi would have been introduced to the Dark Mirror Court. "You haven't encountered a Dark Mirror Senshi, yet?" he prompted and, having noted the step she'd taken away from him added, "I'm not out to hurt you or anything. I'd just rather not yell. If I'm making you uncomfortable, I can keep my distance."

He didn't want to scare her away, after all. If she wasn't very well informed of his Court, he was certainly more than eager to make a good impression. And what better way to do so than with a little civility?

He gestured to himself before casually introducing himself. "I am Remarque, Dark Mirror Senshi of Puppetry, and Vice Captain of the Dark Mirror Court. And you are…?"

The minute he said Dark Mirror Senshi her face fell. Another chaos-aligned faction had come into fruition while she had been away. Her stomach dropped and she felt as though her heart had crawled into her throat making it hard to breath. "No," she mumbled, her meaning unclear. Whether as a response to the blond's question or the simple idea of the dark mirror court.

She shook her head at him, eyebrows knitting together in concern. Worry. Hints of fear. She swallowed and tried to wipe her expression clean. She stood straighter, taller. Held her head high and stepped forward. "I would rather you didn't get much closer," she informed him trying to form a stony expression. She did not fear him.

She kept repeating that to herself.

"Sailor Denebola," she answered carefully, trying to evaluate him. He didn't seem harmful but she had been fooled before and she knew nothing of the dark mirror senshi. "What is the Dark Mirror Court?" She asked him carefully. If he kept his distance she didn't mind probing him for information.

It appeared that she had missed much more than she realized.

Remarque's eyes never left her face; he was judging her reaction—sizing her up while she processed it. He kept his distance passively, as though it would have been bothersome had he made the effort to draw any closer. "It is a pleasure, Denebola," he said, repeating her name to ensure he recalled it should they meet again. "You needn't worry about them, if that's the thought going through your head right now. The Dark Mirror Court have little interest in causing harm to our fellow senshi. Whether you approve or not, we are the same. Chaos has not swallowed us as it has the Negaverse, and I am as free in my choice to follow this path as you are to follow yours. As, the Chaos seems to be a common concern."

He waved his hand nonchalantly, as if to dismiss such an absurd concern as Chaos. "Our goals are simple and harmless. We wish to give you the salvation and freedom we have found, expand ourselves in the universe, and bring a utopia devoid of war, devoid of enslavement. We desire a better life—for all senshi. For all who were ever made to serve under the White Moon. That is not so frightening, is it?"

It was not fear that lit the senshi's mismatched eyes but concern. How many more of her fellow senshi would step into the clutches of chaos? How long would it be before someone attempted to force her hand and lead her down that path? If Denebola was anything, she was stubborn and firmly believed that it would not be a path she chose for herself.

She would not walk the path of the corrupt.

She would die first.

"You speak like some of the negaverse do," she remarked cautiously. "As though we do not belong here." But they did, senshi that was. She was born upon Earth, she had ever right to remain here. She belonged to Earth before she belonged to Denebola, in this lifetime. "You cannot offer freedom or salvation to someone who is not enslaved," she countered, shaking her head.

"I don't understand what you mean by "being made to serve under the White Moon"," she told him. "I am not being made to do anything," another shake of her head, her ponytail bouncing. "Are you not allied with the agents of chaos? How can you claim to seek a utopia when you aid those ailing the world?"

Remarque watched with apparent interest; it was disappointing that Denebola had not immediately swooned with relief at being able to escape the wicked White Moon, though at least she hadn't turned this into a shouting match.

Her questions were justifiable at least—logical, considering how little she must really know about the White Moon if she could still speak so defensively about them.

"Firstly, I don't think senshi belong here. I think, with our power, that we belong somewhere better. Doing something greater. We do not need to seek a Utopia when we can make one. But that takes time and energy and diligence. There is no Heaven on Earth, though why can't we make one in the depths of space? There is all that space out there, why not utilize it? …But that might be thinking too big, considering that you are…here. Just here. Doing nothing but protecting here. A bit selfish, don't you think…?"

He shifted positions, though still seemed comfortable; this conversation had far from rattled him. He was as convinced that the Dark Mirror Court was the proper course for any senshi as the purest of White Moon senshi was sure his kind were evil. He shrugged, repeating her name. "Denebola," he said slowly, as if really, deeply considering her name. "Do you ever wonder what it's like? Denebola. The…planet?...you derive your name from. It's a world out there, isn't it? So what are you doing, here, on Earth? Why aren't you there, protecting it?"

Denebola had never considered the white moon to be wicked, all her negative associations were with the Negaverse. Never had someone from the white moon, from the order side attacked her or tried to take her life. None of them had the ability to reach their hand into her chest and rip out her starseed so she hardly deemed them wicked.

"There is no such thing as a true utopia," she argued. She had read the theories, the books and knew that utopias could be nothing more than a theory, a concept. A dream. They would never be practical. His mention of space made her tilted her head quizzically. Could he not go to space as she could?

His questions left a deep frown on her lips. "You can't go to space." It wasn't quite a question but more of a statement. "Can you?" She had been once and while the vegetation had grown back with a vengeance there was no other life to be found. She had seen glimpses of her past and she wasn't sure she was keen on returning.

"There's nothing there to protect."

She had seen the skeletons and the remains of a civilization. It seemed so distant, so far in the past. "I am here because I belong here, because I was born here. I belong just as much to the Earth as I do my name sake." Mismatched eyes stared at his blue ones. "If you long to go to space then why are you here? Why aren't you out there building that utopia you speak of? What purpose do you have here?"

It took great difficult for Remarque not to sneer and quickly insult her claims; he kept a straight face despite and shrugged. Crossing his fingers over his chest, it was easy to calm himself while he had something to tap his fingers on. "Because all great plans take time. We are biding our time now, preparing our resources. Focusing on the more important issues of the here and now. But, in due time. There is no reason to rush ourselves. This world hasn't torn itself apart. Yet."

His eyes flicked up to the sky, not because he couldn’t stand to keep eye contact but because a part of him wished something would happen, right then and there to prove her wrong. Some beacon from space that would let her know that not all was well in all corners of the universe.

He wasn't surprised when none came.

Instead, he let his eyes slide over the star-spattered sky before sinking back down to meet her gaze. "When it does, I wonder. When there is nothing left here to save—when there is nothing left here. What will you do?"

There was no if. One day, he figured. One way or another. This war or another. Senshi or civilians. This planet was far from perfect, and in his mind he had already idealized the world Ares had spoken of. There would be a utopia. Denebola would see—they all would.

In due time.

It became clear to the senshi of dragonflies that he was disillusioned, caught up in a fantasy world that was unlikely to ever exist. In many ways she felt sorry for him. Sorry that he had been manipulated and brainwashed. Sorry that it was unlikely that he would ever achieve this goal of his, in this lifetime.

"When that time comes," she began, voice calm and steady. "My lifetime will end and another will begin where it is needed." She sounded more unafraid of death than she truly was. She had lived a life before, what was to say she would not live another at some point somewhere?

"Until then I will fight for what I believe in and stand firm in my beliefs," she told him, certain. Denebola had never been one shy away when things got rough, or when things did not go her way. She had ideals, beliefs and she knew that while she was not always in the right (but she'd never admit she was wrong) she stuck to her guns.

"What will you do, Remarque if you cannot achieve your dreams that not only reach to the stars but go beyond?"

He quirked a brow in the senshi's direction. She seemed resilient in her beliefs—which was a pity only in that they were wrong. She would have made a fine Dark Mirror Senshi, but she didn't seem to have wavering doubts like some of the others he had run into. "The 'if' is a huge part of that sentence, Denebola," he replied casually, as if her concerns for such were so trivial they hardly warranted commentary. "I will never stop searching for a method. In this great universe, I refuse to believe that there isn't some way to achieve these goals. So. I mean, in an extremely hypothetical if situation, where there was no way to find am means to my ends? Then I suppose I would propose an alternate plan of action. But until we've been driven out of ideas, been worn down so much that we have nothing left," he shrugged. "I see no reason to assume we'll fail. Why, would you wish it of us?"

She had never been the wishy-washy type and was often baffled when others went back and forth in their beliefs and decisions. She firmly believed that once you made a decision, you stuck by it for good or for worse. Unless forced, it was unlikely that the senshi of dragonflies would ever walk the path of chaos.

She frowned at him, lips pouting and brow wrinkling as he babbled on about how his dreams would happen no matter what. She, secretly, applauded him for standing so firmly beside those dreams while at the same time lamented that it was likely (in her mind) he would never achieve his goals.

"It's not that I wish you to fail," she began, biting her lip. She was troubled by this meeting. He had not attacked her like many of chaos like to nor was he traumatizing an innocent civilian. He seemed keen on the idea that the senshi should unite, though within his court and not the white moon's, and that they served no true purpose here on Earth. She could not say she disliked him, no she was still far too uncertain on how she felt about him but he stood on the side of chaos and therefore and an enemy. Right?

"It is not that I wish you to fail," she tried again, pushing hair from her face. "I worry for what will happen should you not be able to reach the stars," she paused shaking her head. It was hard to put her jumbled thoughts into speakable words. "Will you fall deeper into the hands of chaos and treat this world as the negaverse do? Damn it's inhabitants and take your wrath out on the undeserving while claiming it all for a greater, perhaps unachievable goal? If you wish to go to space," she hesitated, looking away. It was a risky offer and perhaps a rash decision on her part but impulse made her blurt it out.

"I can take you to Denebola."

The offer was enough to leave Remarque quiet for a short time as he pondered the suggestion. He knew too little of space to willingly accept such an offer—not without thoroughly mulling it over and discussing it. He might have to ask Ares of such matters, if ever she could offer the time for such trivial things.

"Perhaps. I will think on it. If your offer still persists when next we meet, I might take you up on such, but for now," he shrugged. "My work is best suited to this world. For, whether you trust my words or not, I care for it." And how could he not? Just because he was destined for some great space war, he couldn’t abandoned where he grew up. Not everyone he cared about was among the ranks of the Dark Mirror Court, and even if their destiny was to tread the unknown corners of space, he couldn’t abandon them, nor had he any intention of leaving them helpless against some local enemy.

The Negaverse, while allied to the Dark Mirror Court, was still new to him. He was still learning of them, and trusted them only because he had been told to. He had no reason to doubt them, but Denebola's words made him question them for as brief a moment as he would allow. "I have no answers for you now. I will reach the stars," he promised. One way or the other. "But should it take me longer than intended, I won't jump to any rash conclusions. Rest assured, I have no intentions to hurt this planet, or its inhabitants."

Except for a little energy gathering, but hey—who counted that?
