Several days after the trip to Valentines, Mort still felt as if he hadn't gotten all the glitter off his person. It was an insidiously sparkly presence that dogged him even after several different showers - and mind you, with his energy affinity it was not a pleasant experience to do so many in such a short time. Yet despite his efforts isolated pockets of glitter still remained within the holes of his body, shiny little eyes of a Valentines triumphant. He hoped Mei and Bells were proud of themselves because ffffffff.

But it was nice to have simple trains of thought like that again, where he could just shake his head, smile, and sigh at the antics of his friends. No Horsemen, no Hunters, not even Humans - just another strange field trip at school.

There was one thing he could allow himself to remember from the Tasks, however, and that was a certain idea he and Leo had discussed which, after a few days of rest, sounded like a good idea to pitch to the others. Thus he had bandied about texts with the three back and forth until they had settled on a time and place convenient for them all, at which point he grabbed the leash and did his best to keep Lanna still as she whirled about excitedly. Imagine her deep dismay when the leash instead went around the neck of a young zquirrel.

For the sake of sanity, Mort suggested just bringing one minipet for the playdate. While Lanna was his favored and still the princess of the room, it was because of her self-appointed title that Mort felt the need to give someone else a bit of spotlight. He tried to pet her goodbye but the foxfire snuffed him and leapt onto the bed where she dug herself into the pillows and made sure her back was to him. Ho boil.

With Lancelot curled atop his shoulder, the zomboil left his room and headed towards their designated meeting spot at the base of the demon dorm hills.

Alexander had gotten the message, but he had hesitated to reply. He'd been mostly keeping to himself lately. Coping with the hand that his unlife had dealt him. Unhappy, but unwilling to let despair and loneliness consume him and keep him from going about his daily routine. Classes, work, the occasional training and lair task...but he did it all alone, and it was mostly done on autopilot. He tried not to think too much about certain things. Just focus on what he had to do and that was all. No extra effort for anything or anybody but himself. Still, these were his friends, and he was going to have to get out and see them eventually. So he had replied, and had helped to make the plans of where they would all meet and when. It might even turn out to be a nice experience. Who really knew?

But when the time came to actually leave his dorm room and go out, he suddenly found himself faced with a decision, one that rubbed raw against a rather sore spot for him. Which minipet did he take? If Fei had been here, there wouldn't have even been a question about it. The vaisel would already be twining himself around the zomboils ankles or scrambling up his body to perch awkwardly on his shoulder.

But Fei wasn't here. His small companion that he had grown to be quite fond of had chosen to stay with...Lady Terror, and his kittens. It was..probably for the best really, but the zomboil sorely missed his presence and companionship. Sure, he had other pets. Loads of other pets. He could see his undead poms, Thing wriggling his half rotting body towards him even now, teeth chattering together as he vied for attention. But none were quite the same as Fei. Fei had been special.

Alexander bent down to retrieve the poms, swallowing against a sudden lump that had formed in his throat, unbidden and unwanted, before he turned and left the room, with Thing hugged tight against his chest.

Some time later he found himself in the meeting place they had all decided on, and as he neared he belatedly wondered if he should have perhaps cleaned himself up a bit first. He tried to make an effort at least when he was going to work, but for the most part the zomboil was filthy. Blood stained, grimy, deathly pale eyes looking tired, and his face grim. "Hey." He greeted his zombro, quietly, his voice low and hoarse. No smile was offered. He felt like he just didn't have them in him anymore.

Leo had spent a ridiculously long time waffling over which minipet to bring to the playdate. Obviously Patty was her long-time best friend and companion, but on the other hand he was getting a bit old, and well, depending on the level of activity of the others' minipets, the whole thing might be a bit too much for him. So maybe it'd be best to bring one of the fruttens - but that just brought up a whole new dilemma. With seven fruttens, how did you decide which one to bring?

Well, Teras and Fruiten had already had a playdate, although it was a while ago. Still, that ruled them out; spread the love and all that. After much contemplating, the Mare finally decided to bring Tutti - the little minipet was one of the calmer fruttens, and far more sociable with strangers than Teras and Frej were.

Choice made, Leo grabbed the minipet in question and quickly put her in her designated harness with minimal fuss. All the fruttens had calmed down a lot after she'd gone and bought toys for them to play with, as well as started regularly taking them out into the little enclosures found around campus so they could run wild. As such, Tutti only squeaked once or twice when being taken up and that was standard fare for fruttens in general, really.

The walk to the base of the demon dorm hills was brisk, and they only stopped once or twice so the little minipet could examine something she found interesting. Soon enough they were at the designated meeting place, and Leo threw a smile to the two zombie boils already there. "Hey!" Tutti turned from whatever she'd been watching, spotted the two other minipets and gave a few chirpy trills in greeting.

Standing next to Mort and Alex, Leo gave the latter a thorough look; he looked, well, pretty awful. Certainly ripe for scaring the crap out of a few humans, that was for sure, but not at all like hís usual self, she thought. "You OK, Alex?" Both her voice and features were concerned and she briefly thought about giving him a hug. He certainly looked like he could use one at the moment.

So much going on. So much so that Mei's head felt as if it might spin right off her shoulders. When the text came about meeting up and junk the ghoul was happy for the distraction. She would get to spend some time with her friends.

All of them together. It was a rare thing to happen lately it seemed. Either she was just with one or the other. Never more than one at once. So them all deciding to meet up certainly made it a lot easier this time around.

She had grabbed Minsks on her way out of her dorm. The Venus Flycat seemed like the best choice for this little outing. Perhaps she should have brought one of the newer additions to her hoard but she was unsure how they might be socially right now. So Minsks it was. The Flycat scurried up her shoulders to the top of the ghoul's head where she flopped down to ride it out high and in style. Minsks' tail flicking back and forth as Mei skipped along, nearly tossing the mini off of her head a few times.

When she had arrived at the meeting place it seemed like everyone was already there. Leave it to Mei to be the last one. "Hey guys!" She smiled widely at them as she closed the distance. Minsks screeched in greeting from her perch.

The smile Mort was going to greet Alex with faded when he saw the state of his bro. Not that Alex had ever been the epitome of cleanliness, but the grim he had on him currently seemed a bit excessive. Then again, he could imagine why . . . "Hey," Mort answered, passing him a sympathetic look before the ghouls joined them. Lancelot tittered excitedly with a clack of his jaw as he flitted his gaze between the newcomers, thick tail curling and uncurling.

"Hey," he said a little louder to welcome them both, the smile returning. It was up to Alex to determine whether Leo's question was worth answering, but Mort was going to push past it either way; he doubted dwelling on the zomboil's personal life would make him feel better anyway. "Good seeing! Come, sit, sit!" And he plopped on the ground and held the leash as Lancelot hopped off his shoulder and peered over his crossed legs, tongue lolling with a bit of drool. "Have a few things want to talk about while here, but first is introductions! This is Lancelot."

The minipet's left eye began to drift to the side and down. Mort snorted, put a finger to the sclera, and righted it.

"I-Is a zquirrel - zombie squirrel," he explained. "Gift from Bells actually. Not brightest've things, but s'like having an undead guard dog. Keeping on leash since, ah, might try chewing on others."

Maybe everyone just got to used to Alex caring enough to clean himself up. This wasn't like it was something new, for him to be this filthy. But as it was..he didn't feel like he had any reason to care what his appearance might look like anymore, so he just gave up on it altogether, much like he had when he'd first attended the school.

Once the ghouls arrived, he turned to give them a wave as well, though his face was still set in it's grim mask. Leo's question had him shrugging a little, with the reply. "Ya sure. As okay as I can be, I guess." Before he too lowered himself to the ground, releasing Thing, unleashed, to do whatever it is the little undead poms wanted to do. He hadn't bothered telling anybody about the fight with Yin, or how he was pretty sure things between them had come to an end. Of course, neither he or Yin had actually said the words but...there had been a definite sense of finality when he'd left his former boilfriends room that night what seemed like ages ago. As much as it still hurt, as much as he wished to jack it hadn't happened the way it had, it just seemed like it would be best to move on.

Didn't mean he had to be happy about it.

And there it was again, that all too familiar pain that came from thinking too much about it, combined with a burning sensation at the back of his eyes. He blinked away whatever bloodied tears might decide to try and escape, cleared his throat, and focused on Thing, who had climbed into his lap and was drooling all over his pants while making odd snuffling sounds, and on what Mort was saying.

"This is Thing." He gestured towards the decaying minipet in his lap. "He's an undead poms. Kind of dumb, but friendly, and loyal." Unlike some pets. But no, he shouldn't think about that, either.

He was a little bit curious about what it was that Mort wanted to talk about, but first he focused his attention now on the two ghouls, waiting for them to do their introductions as well.

Leo let the question lie - it didn't seem like Alex wanted to talk about it, so she nodded and gave him a slight smile. If he wanted to talk, hopefully he knew she was there. As it was, putting him on the spot like this probably wasn't the best idea, so she let it go for now.

Tutti chirped happily at the Venus Flycat from her little leash, and the Mare gave Mei a wave and a grin before settling in next to the boils on the ground. Pulling the frutten closer to take off the leash, but not her harness, Leo proudly placed the minipet in front of her, ignoring the frutten's squeaks to introduce her: "This is Tutti. She's, er, a frutten, but she's not as hyper as most of the others are. I kinda just... found her on the school grounds one day. But that doesn't mean she's owned! She had no collar or anything and no-one's reported her missing." She looked defensive for a moment. "I checked and everything."

Mei took a seat, completing their little circle.

"I hope you all have been well. As much as you can be." She glanced at Alex for a moment. Reminding herself to pull him aside later, but she gave him a cheerful smile none the less. There was nothing more she could really do but offer an ear and a shoulder. But not out here. Not in front of everyone else.

Reaching up, she removed Minsks from on top of her head and placed her on the ground in front of her. The Venus Flycat's tail whipped back and forth as she let out a screech at the other minis once more before rolling onto her back and putting her legs up in the air with a few kicks of her back feet. Trying to look the cutest obviously.

The ghoul scratched at Minsks' tummy with a giggle at Leo's defensiveness for a minute. "This is Minsks. She is a Venus Flycat that I found wandering around out in the woods as a kitten."

Mort nodded in turn to each introduction; so that was what Leo meant by fruttens! And Mei's flycat thing, mrrr . . . He wondered if Bells would like one. It was something to consider if he needed to get a special occasion gift since the ghoul absolutely adored the fluffy and the feline. Lancelot eyed Thing curiously as he was the first rotting mini the zquirrel had seen since, well, ever! Brian didn't count because he was a meanyface dickwad.

And the other two? Well, Lancelot eyed them as well. Hungrily. But at least with a dopey grin as well, so it was a . . . welcomingly wolfish look.

"Know what you mean, Leo. Actually found a few pigimps on campus once, all run amok n' no tags. But ah, good meeting," Mort said with a smile to the others' minipets, giving his a warning tug of the leash; he'd caught that hungry gaze. "While are here, wanted to talk a bit about how are taking to new lifestyle with horsemen." He paused to look around and make sure they would not be overheard.

"Ah, now . . . Wanted t-to know opinions on horsemen," Mort began. "Will narrow down to begin with: how fares Tasks? Went on ones with you two, Leo n' Alex, but am curious to know if did anything else. What were thoughts, concerns, issues?" Leo especially might note the look in his eye that had come during their own task, when humans had been directly killed by their hands.

Alex had to appreciate that nobody pushed him further about what was weighing on his mind recently. He was fairly sure nobody needed to nor wanted to hear about his emotional teenage breakup drama. But Yin had been his first steady anything, his first boilfriend, his first best friend that wasn't a member of his family. But he had thought of him like family. He had thought, foolishly, that they would be together forever. Had told Yin that he was his as long as he wanted him. and Yin had asked even if it meant forever. He'd been prepared for that. Forever.

Forever apparently only lasted roughly 6 months.

So yes, he was taking it a little hard. He was miserable, and broken hearted, but he was trying. The proof was in the fact that he was sitting there, with his friends, instead of hiding in his bedroom wallowing in self pity. He didn't deserve pity, not after what happened. He had done this to himself. All he could do now was move on, try to get over it, and let the emotional wounds heal. The scars would always remain, but he could handle a few more of those.

He listened to the others introductions, face as impassive as usual, but nodded to show that he was listening. Thing was squirming around, rolling onto his back, waving little legs in the air, ears twitching. Eventually the minipet squirmed right out of Alex's lap onto the ground, and he began snuffling around, nose pressed to the dirt.

And then the digging began.

"Don't mind him, he likes to dig holes to hide in." Alex said, by way of explanation for the minipets odd ball behavior.

At Morts question about the horsemen, the zomboil just shrugged. "I don't really know how I feel, to be honest. I..haven't exactly been spending a ton of time interacting with them. You know I went home for two weeks shortly after becoming initiated, and since I've been back I've done what I can but...I get the feeling most of them don't really want us around or appreciate us. I wonder if Medea is just using us for....well, cannon fodder."

"The horsemen..." Leo thought for a few seconds. "Haven't really met many of them, to be honest. They seem to keep much to themselves, as far as I can tell. Sparred with one, but that's about it. I've went on tasks before though, one with you, Mei, and one with you, Mort." She nodded to each of them in turn. "They were -" she hesitated, "successful, certainly. Not what I'd expected, though, and perhaps a bit more than I was ready for." She thought she'd managed to put her doubts about the killing of humans well enough behind her, but her nightmares were proving her wrong. Every night she saw their faces, saw them as the life left them and they became nothing more than corpses. Pretty ridiculous for a mare to be having nightmares of her own, but there you had it.

"This human killing thing, I thought I was OK with it. I mean, I am okay with it, I know they could all be potential Hunters, or Hunter allies, and they're just Fear fodder besides, but -" she looked frustrated, "I keep having these dreams, nightmares, and I just want them to go away!"

Closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, Leo tried to relax. Unclench her fists - when had she even clenched them in the first place? - and draw the tension out of her shoulders. "I don't know how to deal with this, to be honest."

While the mare was having her outburst, Tutti had made her way over to Lancelot, curiously examining the zquirrel. Quite possibly the frutten hadn't realised the wolfish nature of the zquirrel's grin yet; she was only interested in meeting the new minipets here, really, and the two others seemed a bit busy so she'd gone for this one first. Chirping inquisitively, she drew closer to the zquirrel, wondering whether or not he'd mind a bit of grooming.

The ghoul was honestly surprised. Was she the only one that had had the most interaction with the Horsemen? There were so few students as initiates she would have gathered since the others had chosen this path they would have pushed at least somewhat to get to know the Horsemen better.

That singular fact made her edgy. Mei's final goal in her path she had chosen, what she was striving towards was to lessen the animosity between students and the Horsemen. And while she probably was barely making any headway with that ambition, it saddened her that the others were merely skirting by on the edges. Wasn't working together the point of why they had all become initiates?

When it was her turn she kept her gaze mostly on Minsks as she spoke. "I've done a couple lair tasks. Haven't really had too much of an issue with them." She fidgeted slightly glancing to Mort for a second. He had seen her at the Colosseum with Eisheth, yet he had not questioned her on why she was there with the Horsewoman. Yet anyhow. "And I've spent some time with the Horsemen. While they tend to think themselves our betters they do have redeeming qualities once you get past that outer shell. But you have to work for it."

Her eyes looked about the group now. Looking at each one of them individually. "It makes me kind of sad that there are so few of us who are willing to though." Now her gaze settled on Alex. "If Medea is using us as cannon fodder then she must be using the Horsemen as such as well. She seems to have her own secret motives behind everything that doesn't quite include the rest of us. Student or Horsemen. But that is just pure speculation on my part."

As Mort listened, his grip inadvertently grew a little lax. Lancelot took advantage and pushed to the new length of the leash to sniff Tutti curiously. And then he licked his lips, chittered, and attempted to snap at the frutten's cheek fluff. She looked so deliciousssssss.

His owner pulled him back just in time, though, and Mort passed the zquirrel a cross look before going back to listening to their responses, gaining a pensive look towards the end. "Mrrr . . . Horsemen're all about earning rights to things, m'thinkin'," he observed shortly after Mei finished, pushing his glasses up with a finger. "N' maybe is good thing that mutual respect i-is so important because builds camaraderie based on actions n' deeds, not politics or birthrights. But allies from different sides should work on equal footing, work to meet others halfway - not demand someone to do it all to meet certain requirement; then creates social hierarchy dynamic, lords over civilian soldiers. M'not sure how many've them think as much, but do get feeling most have similar mindset like that: just tolerating us. But, ah, at same time don't think can all be as cold," Mort added with a small shrug. "Admire alchemists for their work at least, n' this particular one, Sal, I-I think could really look forward to achieving things with guidance. Seems to like me n' Alex at least."

Really, really like them.

But that was the central issue, though, wasn't it: students taking on the role of soldiers at such young ages. He tossed Mei an strange, unreadable look when she commented on how she hadn't had much of an issue, equal parts confused and concerned; he had taken part in only three of the tasks, but none of them had been easy on his conscience and he highly doubted the last was. Was she merely putting up a front, or was the ghoul more stone-hearted than expected? Or . . . was it the fragment's or that horsewoman's influence? Mort's thoughtful expression turned more melancholic as he went on to address the three. "On matter of human killing . . . Halloween teaches that is bad for business, n' it's true: less humans means less people t-to strike fear in, less Fear to bring back n' sustain. S'frowned upon, obviously. At same time, though, one kill e-every once in a while also generates massive amounts've Fear if done correctly - imagine is how Horsemen operate. But . . ."

Mort trailed off, trying to find the words to properly convey what he meant without cracking again. "But, ah, does not mean isn't hard to deal with," he continued, giving Leo in particular a sympathetic look. "Know it is, trust me. 'Ve prolly killed more humans than the lot've you put together. I-It's not . . . easy. N' i-if it ever starts to be, then I-I say should step back n' reconsider yourself, reconsider priorities. Remember: may be Initiates, but are not horsemen - are not out for human blood, only Hunters'." And the zomboil made that statement very clear as he turned his gaze on each of them. "Whatever happens, remember that we are Halloween. Whatever horsemen do, whatever Medea tells us o-or really wants, keep that in mind alright? Believe student Initiates should keep close to one another, because believe that is needed, is necessary, to know someone has back no matter what. N' maybe some horsemen will say so too. But . . . just wanted to know that I swear will do everything to make sure are safe while going through this unknown."

A few seconds after the impromptu speech, Mort had the grace to look embarrassed with himself. He rubbed the back of his neck self-consciously and gave a little chuckle. "D-Didn't mean to word vomit. Guess is, er, side effect of campaign practicing."

Alex listened to each of his friends in turn, keeping his eyes fixated on Thing as he continued to dig himself a nice hole to curl up inside, with the occasional clacking of his teeth and the burble and blurp of drool.

He was definitely a special little guy.

When Leo spoke, however, he cringed a little bit. Nightmares, bad dreams, all from what the horsemen were asking them to do. His gaze flickered from their steadfast post towards the ghoul, and he gave her a sympathetic look. But it was hard to feel sorry for her, or for any of them. They had chosen to follow Medea, and to do whatever it was that was required of them. What had they really expected would happen? When Mei spoke, his gaze snapped over towards her and narrowed slightly. He had this strange feeling like she had left something unsaid that she wanted to get off of her chest, and the way she looked at him at the end of her speech...

Apparently Alex wasn't going to get away with not talking, without explaining his reasoning for what he was doing and why, exactly, he cared so little about trying to appease the horsemen, even if he had chosen to become an initiated.

But then Mort spoke, and apparently he had a lot to say. Alex just blinked at his zombro, and raised an eyebrow, finding himself agreeing with pretty much everything.

"Okay, I think it's time for me to be honest here." He finally said, once Mort had finished his speech, once he was fairly sure that the other zombie was finished, at least. His own voice came out rough, almost like a growl, and he cleared his throat with a cough into his fist before starting.

"The only reason I am following Medea, the only reason I allied myself with the horsemen, is because I felt obligated to do so. I owe Medea for what she did for me. When those students got captured, when Yin got captured," His voice might have hitched a little when he said the boils name, but he continued on regardless. " It was me who went to Medea and asked her for the help to find them, and to bring them home. Maybe they would have done it anyways. Maybe she already had her own agenda, and it just happened to align with my own. Whatever the case, she marked me, personally, and told me that she would help...if I bound myself to her, and if I raised an army of students to join them when they stormed the island" He hadn't told anybody about this. Of course, his friends had seen the mark on his hand, the one that he had long before they crossed through the ring of fire beneath the school.

"So ya, I made the choice to honor the agreement I made with her, and I'll work with the horsemen, but that does not mean that I have to make the effort to become friends with them. Killing humans? Fine, I'll do it, but I don't have to like it either. Hunters are humans, but not all humans are hunters. Hunters are the ones that I want to kill. Hunters are the reason that my unlife has gone all to hell." He growled.

"But of course, I had to miss out on all that fun." He shook his head, remembering what Mort had told him about the Colosseum. "And now Medea is gone, but I'm still marked, my unlife is still s**t, and there are still hunters out there somewhere likely plotting their next attack, or their next mission to capture a bunch of our own and convince them to become weapons through deceitful words and manipulation tactics. What I wouldn't give to be able to go to that island again, to be able to do something to hurt them in the way that they've hurt me." Okay, so he was getting a little bit over emotional now, and realizing this, he clamped his mouth shut. He couldn't blame hunters for everything that had gone wrong, but he could give them a good percentage.

"Anyways, whatever, go team horsemen, I guess." He muttered, eyes dropping back to the hole in the ground.

Tutti threw a betrayed look at Lancelot before making her way over to Minsks. Hopefully the venus flycat was less, well, ravenous. She stopped just before the other minipet and chirped an enthusiastic greeting, waiting to see how friendly this one was before getting any closer.

Leo listened quietly as Mei talked about the horsemen. Yeah, she'd come around to the idea that they weren't all bad people, but that didn't make them any less intimidating. She still needed to find an artisan to help make a vessel for her Fear fragment; perhaps that would be a good way to start making more contact with them? They were in the same boat now, after all.

And then Mort started talking and wow, did he ever talk. Leo had a grin on her face at the end of it, though. "That was some word vomit, indeed. But I agree. What you said..." She hesitated. "It makes sense. We may be part of the Lost Clan now, if Medea is to be believed, but that doesn't mean we share the horseman lifestyle, or their ideals. We don't have to be as bloodthirsty for human blood as they are, not all the time."

She'd never really thought about it like this before, but she was glad he'd shared his thoughts; and she couldn't help agreeing. "And definitely, we should stick together. Still make nice with the horsemen, of course," she threw a glance to Mei, "but also remember who we are and that we're in this together."

Giving Alex's shoulder a squeeze that was meant to be comforting, she looked serious again. "That's... wow, I did not know that was how things'd gone down. But it'll be alright, I'm sure of it," she looked very determined, "because even if Medea is a dodgy old bag and she might be the one giving the orders, we're the ones who're here. There's been times when I've regretted this whole thing, yeah, not gonna lie, but all in all, we can do something." She paused, gathering her thoughts and looking at her friends. "That doesn't mean we're omniscient or that things aren't going to be hard as all jacked hell, but we're finally in a position where we can actually fight the Hunters when it comes down to it. I'm not really talking an all-out war, but even just the little encounters in the Haunted House - we have a weapon of our own now, one that can rival the Hunters' if we learn to control it right. All-out war can come later. Well, maybe not, I'd kinda prefer little guerrilla strikes, to be honest. It'd be a better strategy for us, I think."

Apparently word vomit was a bit contagious.
