Solo exploration.

It was one of those things that Tinder counted as the greatest of blessings. Time away from the constant bustling of Glory and, especially, family. Both his parents agreed it was a deplorable habit, but his father was also glad to let him go. It was Mom he had to sneak away from.

Sneaking away was best done by looking like he was busy, following the river, and then making a break for it.

He'd chosen the Crystal Flow today, and he knew that likely meant he would never get out of the eyes of one unicorn or another, but that was fine. The river was calm, and it fit the need he had.

Tinder had outrun the last of the unicorns he'd seen. They were youngsters that had asked for a race. Then he'd kept running. He also out-endured them, and though he knew solitude wouldn't last along the Crystal Flow, for now--- Ah, what sound was that?

Tinder always let curiosity of the "who" overcome his desire not to be seen. He drew closer, and then realized he didn't recognize the other unicorn.

Well, that was even more curious. He hesitated, then walked toward the edge of the river.

"Good day! I am Tinder! Who are you?"

He was horrible at keeping solitude.

Though he usually kept company in the GloryHeart meadow with his many times Grandmother the Queen, today was just one of those days that it was nicer to get away. Away from the rest of the court. Away from the expectations. Most of the time it wasn't too bad, but today, oh today. Today there was a new Glory being initiated. He had done his part. At least what was expected of him. Then he had left.

Today Taffy had decided to head over to the river. The thought of playing in the water and letting the river wash away all his formality was very tempting. However, as he was dipping his hooves in the crystal clear water he discovered that the river wasn't quite far enough. He could still hear the other Unicorns celebrating.

He decided that this was not going to get him down. He would have his fun time! With thah, he started to trot up the river, just in the edge of the water. He had to travel for quite a ways before the sounds of the meadow began to fade, but he didn't mind. Exploring was his other favorite thing to do. When he was satisfied with the area he had found, he stopped for a breather.

Then without further ado, he plunged into the water. He had only been splashing around for a few moments when he heard another Uni calling out. He stopped and looked up at the young male approaching him. the other Uni didn't seem much if any older than himself. He only allowed himself a moment of study before his formal politeness training kicked in.

"Hello to you! I am Taffy. The many time Great Grandson of the Queen. Is there any way I can assist you?" Inwardly he cursed how formal he sounded. Too much time around the royal court.

Oh, no! Not a courtite!

Tinder looked down as he began to fight all the immediate, and contradictory, reactions. He just wanted to snort some retort and walk away. He was trying to avoid this sort of thing today. Mom and Tynol would answer him likewise. Well, he was Tinder, son of...and grandson of.... Dad would, Dad.... He knew whatever Dad would do, it was probably the right response, but he didn't know.

He pawed the ground in frustration, and lifted his head with pride. "Well, I am of Rivers' Guard Glory, and our founder, my many times Great Grandmother Alina was a great friend to the Queen." Maybe. He thought so. Did he recall that right? Or was it her parents that had been friends of the Queen? Or was that just a story his mother told to make her seem more important than she really was, like the times she also claimed kinship to the Queen. It was always a joke, and everyone always laughed, but Tinder knew how she wanted it to be true.

Dad's voice finally caught up to him. Tinder, everyone deserves the time of day.

"Uh--Uhm..."

Guu-uuuh! He looked around for some way to save himself. Oh! Yeah, this was that place!

He brought his head low again. "Ah, I guess that means we're many times Great Grandfriends or something. Got a lot of catching up to do, huh? Wanna see something cool?"

Taf groaned inwardly as Tinder started to posture. This was exactly why he had left the meadow today! He tried to remain friendly in posture and bearing as Tinder went on to talk about some relation to the Queen or other. He tried to listen politely, he really did. But his mind kept turning to how he could politely extricate himself from the situation.

Then he saw all the steam come out of the male. And decided that now was probably a good time to start listening again. He really was quite taken aback by how the male tried to salvage the situation. 'Grandfriends? Something cool?' This might not turn out to be too bad at all. With a great effort he threw aside his manners.

"Uh . . . . Sure. Yeah. Of course. Grandfriends!" He let out a small snort of laughter at the idea. "There's something cool? Nearby? Is there water?"

He trotted into the water until it became deep enough to swim. With a few strokes of his legs he felt his hooves touch ground again. Lucky this was a shallow not too currented part of the river. It wasn't long till he was coming out of the water and making his dripping way closer to Tinder. At least this way they didn't have to shout.

Tinder let out a sigh of relief as this Taffy proved not to be such a horrible court unicorn after all.

"Yes! It's in the water. Don't come out!" Tinder came up to the bank, looked at the water and took a breath, then ran in, splashing up water everywhere as he did so. "Over that way, a few feet. Do you see the large tree, and how the bank comes out a little ways?"

He stayed near the bank as he wandered over to the spot, then dunked in the water. He came up spluttering. "Ugh-aaah...Oh, yeah, the ledge...Check this out!"

He ducked under again, intentionally this time, still headed for the same spot. After some moments, his voice was heard from somewhere under the bank and tree. "Come on!"

Under water caves with a tree root top. What was more awesome than THAT?

Taffy walked along the river bottom until he came to the place where Tinder had said something about a shelf. He found it with his toes and made a big leap off of the edge of it, letting his momentum carry him under the surface of the water.
He surfaced again to get a breath before going under to find the opening to the cave. He found it easily, as he had much experience looking for things underwater. He often made a game of it actually. To drop something in the river and find it to retrieve it.
He pulled his mind back to getting into the cave. He pushed himself in and surfaced to breath, looking around for Tinder.

The 'cave' was an intricate root system, clearly molded by magical hands at some point in the past, but either abandoned by it's creators or welcoming enough to the two unicorns that they didn't bother to show themselves. The tree roots served to create a roof, and but also hung down in spindles that were either creepy or artistic, depending on one's view.

Directly where Taffy was, it was too deep to touch ground, and really just his heads popped up, but Tinder was all ready headed inwards, away from the river, and was apparently able to trudge a bit. As Taffy came up, he would realize it was muddy and to put his whole weight down might be unwise.

The cave spun to the left, where there had been a large circle of trees. And, likewise, it opened up to reveal a large room-like area, where they would even be able to come completely out of the water. Again, however, it was horribly muddy. And it was dark. They could see by the light of their horns.

"I used to drive my brother crazy by calling for him from under ground." Tinder knickered at some amusing memory that brought up. "It goes on for quite awhile, but some times the river plants are so thick that it's gets suffocating."

Tinder had trudged up into the mud, and sitting in it, most of his legs hidden in the muck. "How come you're all the way out this way? Alone?"

PostPosted: Sun Aug 26, 2012 9:24 pm

Taffy splashed his way further in until his feet hit muck. He flailed around in it a bit, stirring up a big mucky mess that soaked into his pristine white coat.
He drug himself out of the water and onto the mud pile next to Tinder. Pausing a minute to catch his breath he looked around taking in the cavern's surroundings. He wondered just how far it went and how long it would take to find the end.
He flopped over onto his side and rolled around int the mud. He sank halfway under and had quite a struggle pulling himself out of it. When he finally got free with a giant sucking noise, he laughed.
Focusing back on the other Uni he figured that it would be alright to tell him the truth.
"I was trying to get away from The Meadow for a bit. I love the river and was just going to relax but the sounds of the Glory welcoming were rather loud today. So I headed upstream." He shook his head, splattering mud everywhere from his mane.
"It's such a pain being related to the Queen. People expect so much from you. And sometimes all I want is to play. Of course Grandmama understands and even at times encourages my exploring. But her advisers. They'd have their tails in knots if they saw me now." He snorted at the picture of their reaction in his head. "I mean, I do love my family. I wouldn't want you to get the wrong idea. But I just want to explore the world. And that isn't proper for one of my relation."
He moved his feet around in the mud enjoying the squishy sounds it made.
"So. what's your family like? You said you have a brother? What's he like?"

Tinder watched Taffy with amusement, and decided he liked the relaxed attitude of his counterpart. Was he ever glad to have swallowed his earlier indignation!

He found himself nodding with earnest to Taffy's explanation of the Glory being too loud, the advisors too cautious and the the inability to go too far beyond proper borders without having to come back home to expectations. It wasn't that he could possibly understand the extent of what Taffy likely dealt with, but he certainly dealt with those same things.

Ugh, his family.

Getting pulled away from listening to Taffy was unpleasant a moment, but then he was grinning. "Dusty? He wants to fight about everything! Has to see who's first each time we do something again." Tinder spoke with a great deal of mock-annoyance in his voice, but was obviously more than pleased with his brother. "His name's Tynol, but I call him Dusty, 'cause he's always got this mini cloud of dust surrounding him everywhere he goes. Can't mistake him as someone else! Mama and Pop just had four new foals."

He paused and shook his head. Tinder still couldn't get his mind wrapped around that one. Foals belonged to other unicorns. Not his parents! Weirdest of all was how it made his mother all.... gentle and motherly....

"So instead of being out as much as they usually are, they're all wrapped up in them. That means when something small goes on with the Glory, and they want to bypass the proper command, a lot of them try to get to Pop and Mama through Dusty and me. Pop says it's good practice, but I'm not him. I don't know how to take care of things like he does. Besides, they had a girl. I don't think everyone's looking to me anymore anyway."

Tinder blinked. He hadn't meant to go that far, and he wasn't sure that he mentioned that his father was the current leader of the Glory anyway. He still hadn't quite sorted out his feelings over the last statement, and mentally pushed it aside. He quickly tried to cover with another subject.

"So you like the river a lot? Y'know, Crystal Flow is a baby compared to Azure Rush. Have you ever gotten that way? Azure Rush has all these rapids, and rocky areas, mini waterfalls and sometimes big ones along the way. Our family lives behind one of the gentle ones, but it's all the conference room, so sometimes our family gets kicked out so Pop and Mama can talk forever about Glory things. OH! At Azure Rush, there's even a spot... It's really far down though.... that breaks off into a pool, and in the middle of the pool the water sucks everything right down into it! A whirlpool. I didn't believe Pop, and jumped in anyway. That wasn't smart, I didn't go near the water after that for months and months. That's one record Tynol hasn't tried to break." Tinder spoke with all the enthusiasm of "that-was-so-stupid-it-was-awesome" that only teenage boys could muster.

He had just talked. A lot, and way too quickly. So he closed his mouth, letting Taffy pick up on any of the many points he had touched on.

Taffy listen intently as Tinder talked about his family. There was no mistaking that he really loved them. No matter what changes his new younger siblings would bring.
It caught Taf off guard though when Tinder spoke of his family and the chain of command. His new friend was part of an important family. He lost himself deep in his thoughts for a moment while he tried to remember what he had been taught about the other Glories that were around. Ah! That was it! Tinder must be the son of the leader of The River Guard Glory.
"Wait. Did you say whirlpool? And you jumped in?" Taf grew excited as his new friend started talking about the river again. "How did you get out?"
He knew there was the river called Azure Rush but he had never had the chance to see it himself. He would love the chance to see the rapids sometime. Maybe he could talk Tinder into taking him later.

"Yeah! Splashed out on the sides of it though, so it's not like I was getting tunneled in the middle right away. Mom jumped in after me, and she swims easier than a nymph in any kind of water. It's like the currents go right around her. But it's not like she can neutralize the effect on others. Dusty still rags me about trying to get the four of us killed."

He was proud, so proud, of his mother, but rather envious of her as well. To have that ability!! He tilted his head at the last statement, then shook it, eyes lit up. '''Cause, you know, Dad wanted to do something but he's not like that with the water, and that just led to more trouble, I'm told. I was kinda preoccupied."

So. Stupid. Heh. "What about you, any crazy moments for you?"
