Although the sun had barely risen, the day was already promising to be sweltering. Summer, it seemed, was giving one last hurrah before it relinquished its claim and gave way to autumn. Although the birds were as energetic as ever, other creatures were not so eager to face the heat.
However, a certain she-wolf acknowledged that she could not sleep all day and supposed that she might as well enjoy what little time she had before the sun warmed the earth beyond comfortable levels. So, with a long, languorous stretch, she slowly padded out of the den. A den which, as it happened, was not her own, but which she was sharing with a male she had very recently met.
She sat sat down on a rocky outcropping and watched the water that the male was named for, allowing herself to get lost in thoughts about the future.

River had already been up and out of the den, leaving his guest to sleep in as long as she desired. He watched her gaze down into the river, seeing her eyes glaze over as she seemed to get lost in her own thoughts. He had been cooling off in the river and his fur was slightly soggy from a few rolls to cool himself off.
With a smile, he threaded softly through the water, stopping just short of where she was. He flicked his front paws, creating a little splash, though not enough to wet either of the two, just enough to catch her attention. "Morning! Seems to be a hot one, would you care to join me?" he grinned and gave her a low bow. "Or if you'd like, I can catch you something to eat first." he offered kindly. She was his guest after all, so he was going to do his best to make her happy and comfortable during her stay.

The sudden noise made her start and she noticed for the first time that River was swimming below. How had she not noticed that before? Her thoughts must have been more all-consuming than she had realized.
"Good morrow," she replied with a shy little smile. In the short time that she had known this male, she was already getting more comfortable around him. Still, it was not as though her awkwardness was going to go away overnight. At least he did not laugh at her or become offended by her attempts at socialization. Perhaps if she were lucky, she would be able to speak to him normally today. Yes. That was a worthy goal. She would endeavor to make it through the entire day like a normal person.
Ah, the first hurdle. Was did she wish to do first? Eat or play? Well, her belly was still quite full from last night's meal, a very full meal thanks to her host's successful efforts. That answered that question.
Without replying to his question, she moved to a crouch and sprang into the river with a mighty splash. When she surfaced, her grin was more playful. "I think I need to work off that meal you fed me last night."

In a manner of moments, River's face was now dripping with water as his guest dived in. That was an obvious answer to his question. With a chuckle, he shook his head of droplets and smiled at her. "Splendid idea! I am quite full still myself." he grinned, his fur now slightly more fluffy from his shaking.
"You caught me off guard there M'Dear." he said smoothly as he let himself sink deeper into the cooling waters. "But that wont happen again!" he teased, his grin playful as he gently splashed a pawfull of water in her direction. He didn't want to upset her, so he was gentle at first and allowed her to decide how playful she was willing to get.
"I do hope you slept well." he said as he rolled lazily over in the water, exposing his belly before flopping onto his side, enjoying the feeling of the cold water running through his fur. "I know my den might not be the biggest..." he mused as he stopped to look at her....and for the first time, actually look at her. It indeed had only been a short time, but he could feel that they had grown even a little more comfortable around each other. How many males were lucky enough to have such a gorgeous thing like this she wolf staying in their den? He grinned to himself as he could only count one....

Even Hawk had to admit that it was an amusing sight - River's fur sticking out every which way while he spoke like a true gentleman. In fact, he was still acting like a gentleman, not playing very hard at all. Barely a drop from his splash hit her. Did he not like to play? She considered the possibility, but decided that, given his chivalrous ways, it was more likely that he did not want to un-dignify her or some such thing.
When the urge to see if she could coax him into being more playful struck, it occurred to Hawk that her sister was not the only one in the family who enjoyed having fun - their versions of fun were simply very different.
As he trailed off, she could not help but wonder what he was thinking. He had the oddest look on his face. At a loss for how to interpret the look, she decided to ignore it.
"I did sleep very well," she replied, and it was true. When she was traveling, she dearly missed the feeling of another warm body to curl up next to at night. Last night had been a pleasant reprieve.
With no more warning than a mischievous glint in her eye, the she-wolf sent a large splash toward the male.

River was about to open his mouth to say he was pleased with the fact that she had slept good when a sudden wave of water came crashing into his face, into his mouth and eyes, nostrils and ears. Anything water could splash into, it did. And he laughed. He had not been expecting that.
Dripping wet, he gently slid open his eyes, a grin plastered to his soaking wet face. "My Lady, I was not expecting that." he laughed, shaking himself a bit, though it did no good. His fur was still plastered to his body. "I was going easy because I was not sure how playful you were but now..." he said, letting a deep low rumbling play growl echo in his chest before he lunged out of the water like some sort of fuzzy whale and dove straight at Hawk, aiming to wrestle her around a bit in the water. Though if all he managed to do was soak her just as she did him, that was also ok.

Fire Hawk might have been a warrior, but if asked she would be forced to admit that she was considerably less nimble in the water than on dry land. This inconvenient fact made itself known as a rather large male barreled into her. She yelped in surprise just before she was briefly immersed in the water. When she re-emerged, her fur was thoroughly plastered to her body.
"For that, sir, you will pay," she informed him.
A playful snarl made its ay out of her mouth as she made to pounce on him from the side. Ideally, she would return the favor of introducing him to the fish below the surface. Never mind that she had been the one to start it.
