(Third times a charm. Let's see if Gaia will eat this one too D< )
Of all the places to end up, Rochelle never imagined Trine. She loved Malvren, it had been her home for turns. One did not simply jump Weyrs without orders or good reason, and if she never Impressed, it wouldn't happen. A rebellion made for a very good reason - but who thought it would come to that?
She missed her home. Trine felt weird, alien, like something from stories even though it was Just Another Weyr. Everything changed here. Time to make the best of things, really, wasn't it?
Totes.
When not harrassing The Boys as she'd come to call Aleck and Carltis and not working, Rochelle wandered. She started to map out the place, making a view in her mind, making Trine hers. She threw on the usual cincher, short sleeved top and fitted pants with her boots and off she went! Today: finding the runners.
No real reason lay behind her thoughts other than 'why not?', and that was good enough for her. So shw tromped out to stare, to find, rubbing at the back of her neck when she came around to the... herdbeast area. Bugger all if she knew the appropriate term.
Like a creeper, she stared.
Why not?
(Edit: SUCCESS. Apparently phone posting is how we do this. neutral )

Gauden had several leads looped over one shoulder, intending to bring some of the runners in for a grooming. Several runners had been missing from the stables when he returned, though the Revolutionary they had caught had been where they had left him. Escapees, then. Gauden regretted the loss of the runners, especially the good tempered Asper, but there was no help for it by that time. They had to make do and the one rider who had had a runner taken had understood, disappointed as he was to lose his favorite pet.
Today it seemed that Gauden would have some company. He squinted ahead at the girl leaning on the fence, but his steps didn't slow.
"Help ya with somethin'?" he offered as he reached the gate to the paddock, beginning to unhook it. In the distance, several runners looked up, and one even turned and began to make her way over.
He didn't recognize the woman, but that wasn't surprising to him. There were plenty at Trine he hadn't met personally, and she was potentially one of the refugees which made it even more difficult to know whom he was dealing with.

Why hello there, strange man!
Rochelle squinted back at him. He moved like he belonged there and she didn't recognize him, so chalk one up for a native Trine or someone who'd been there long enough to not second guess themselves. ... too much, anyway, she'd not even met him. Assumptions were, in her book, a good thing. Rochelle thrived on assumptions.
"I have some free candlemarks and thought I'd explore. Being bored is lame and is that a runner coming over here?" Rochelle's attention swung to the probably-approaching beast, gaze wary at best. She didn't move away from her leaning position, though her hand rose in a half-wave to Gauden. "I'm Rochelle. What's it doing?"

Gauden eyed the girl for a moment, then nodded at the runner to demonstrate. "Coming over, as ya said. Knows it's time for a grooming. They'll all get leads on them once I call or get in there. They've been out for a good part of the day."
As if that explained it all, Gauden opened the gate and stepped in, closing it behind him. Rochelle's odd question made him look at her again as Pin made her way over. "Would you want to meet her?"
The girl clearly had little to no experience with runners, whatever else she had done in her life. Well, she had come exploring, and as long as Gauden got along with his duties he didn't mind her hanging around to watch or even taking a minute or two to let her meet one of the nicer runners.
Gauden brought a hand to his mouth and whistled loudly, calling in the other horses. Most turned at the first whistle and began ambling over. As usual, Orango continued to eat. He always had a few more bites before Gauden's second piercing whistle came-- as it did now. Orango lifted his head and looked in Gauden's direction for a moment, then tossed his head and followed the other runners at a similarly slow walk.

She made glass baubles and flasks and lenses as quick and happily as you pleased but even Rochelle knew her limitations when it came to beasts. Runners were all very well and good, pretty in their own way (and hello beast-man). So when he said yes, they were coming over and would she like to meet them?, up and over she went in a haul of clothes and hair.
"I've never been near one not geared up to be ridden," she said carefully, eyeing up the runner as Gauden had been to her only a moment before. Like dragons, they always seemed much larger when not prepped. More wild. "But sure, why not. As long as I don't go wild and crazy I won't get my hand bitten off, right? Like a wher. ...well, hopefully nicer'n a wher, those things are huge and terrifying with bad breath. Not that I imagine crunched grass smells any better. Do they have names?"

Gauden debated whether she was trying to be funny and decided she wasn't. He gave her a slight smile.
"Nah, you can get mean runners, but this lot is good. Nothing like whers." Gauden's voice was surprisingly without the hostility and disgust many people now spoke with when they mentioned whers. "Shame we lost some during the fighting, but it wasn't many, and the whole lot is pretty good. If we get runners that haven't been broken in properly, or need training, we keep 'em separate from the herd at first so we can work with 'em. Train 'em myself when I get the chance, then introduce them to the herd to learn manners. Molly there doesn't take much from any of the younger horses. Isn't that right, Molly?" The last was shouted, and an older chesnut mare perked her ears forward and picked up her pace slightly. Gauden smiled and reached out to slip a lead around Pin's neck as she placidly waited for him to do so.
"And of course they have names. Can't have an animal without a name. This one here is Pin; she's a good girl. Can touch her, if you wanted" he reached up a hand to do so himself, patting her on the neck. "The pair Molly just left in the dust are Lorren and Hattie. Hattie's the pal girl there, with the white star. Palomino, that is. Gold coat, pale mane and tail." He gestured with the hand he had been petting Pin with. The horse turned her head to look at Rochelle, shifting in place faintly but otherwise waiting docilely.

Rochelle liked to pride herself on being hilarious when she wanted to be. At this point in time, though, it was a legit question - for her, anyway. Not many runners in Malvren she came across and Apprenticing meant learning thar Craft, not another. Still. Hilarity abound. She smiled back for that brief moment before Molly was called.
Sorry, Beastcrafter, you've been replaced as 'new bestie' by the runner offered up for pets. The young woman blinked up at Pin and slowly smiled, holding out her hand slowly to the horse. One didn't just off and pet a new canine on the head or feline on the hair - introductions had to be done, properly so. (As proper as she knew to be which was 'dont jump at it screaming and don't instantly swipe at it in pets.)
"Hey, Pin," she said softly, trying not to go 'eeee' outloud. "And what's your name? Uh, you, guy, not Pin. I know Pins name."

Gauden watched Rochelle ever so slowly approach and waited with as much patience as the runner, trying not to immediately assume the slow movement was out of uncertainty over whether or not she'd get bitten. He had just said they wouldn't hurt her.
"Gauden, Journeyman Beastcrafter at Trine. You?" As Molly came up he fitted another lead around her neck, give her a few firm strokes along the neck as well, so she wouldn't feel left out. She bumped her head against him, obviously hoping for hidden treats, but Gauden shook his head.
"None today. Sorry." He glanced at Rochelle, realizing she might not realize he was talking to the runner and not to her. "She's looking for treats. Use 'em to coax the runners into doing things sometimes or just because.
"They shouldn't check you, since they don't know you." He paused and gave Molly a few strokes on her soft nose as he waited for the other runners to make it over.

Even children encouraged to swim approached with some trepidation, regardless of who assured them or for how long. As impulsive as Rochelle liked to be in her personal life she did not fancy the idea of getting gnawed on by big things. Some of that tapered out with the second introduction, a slow grin making its way onto her face.
"Rochelle, glasscrafter. I make baubles, fiddly things, and sensible glass needs," The grin widened and then suddenly Pin, something she could pet without fear of teeth and chewing. She patted at the runners jaw and down to her neck, brightening all the more. "That's fine. I smell like glass and smoke anyway, even on my days off. Maybe. Probably. It's highly possible I just constantly have the scent of melted glass in my brain all the time now, so I try not to assume things like that. D'you need any help? I'll probably be horrible but I'm really bored and you mentioned grooming."

Gauden raised his eyebrows at her slightly with her chatty rolling list of words. A talker, wasn't she. Well, glasscrafters were capable with their hands and he'd never met someone who couldn't learn basic grooming in a short period of time.
"Sure. I can teach you the basics anyway. Here, you lead these two. They'll be your best customers." He passed her the leads for Pin and Molly and then stepped away as the remainder of the runners came up, circling their necks in turn and finally waiting as the stubborn Orango took his time coming over and getting tied up like the others. "This way," he said with a slight jerk of his head and lead Rochelle and the runners back toward the stable.
He kept an eye on her, to make sure the runners behaved with this new person leading them, but the mares were good and Gauden didn't have to stop any incidents.
"Hold 'em," he told her as they entered the cool stable, and led the other runners off to their stalls first, getting them settled, though they stuck their heads out to see what was going on once he'd closed the gates on them.
"All right." He accepted the leads from her. "There's a box of combs and other supplies there. Get that."
With the instruction given, he put Molly and Pin away, leaving Rochelle time to retrieve what they would need.

She knew that look, she all but lived on that look when younger and to this day, when she became enthusiastic about things... the words came. When it came to guys like Gauden, it boiled down to talking about everything and often or keeping just as quiet.
"Fabulous! What's up, girls, you're going to be awesome with me today?" She crooned the words to the runners, taking the leads and following him as instructed. A cautious eye remained on the runners, his reassurances being true or not, even though the runners did nothing to prove Gauden wrong.
They stood in placce once where they needed to be, Rochelle eyeing them up. The glasscrafter scampered off to fetch the box, peering inside when she headed back. Her eyebrows flicked up. "So, these are awkward looking brushes and... items. I think I could use some as weapons."

Gauden looked at Rochelle for a long moment, not really sure what to make of her statement, and suddenly it struck him as being amusing. She was certainly an interesting character.
"Probably," Gauden agreed, a half-smile tilting his lips. He dug into the box pulling out a few curry combs and the like. "Here." He passed her one, taking the other for himself. "Watch what I do and then I'll see if you can mimic me well enough."
He chose to groom Pin first. "Brush strokes go like this here. Always with the coat, same as you would do brushing your own hair." He demonstrated a few times while Pin sat placid under his hands, pleased to have the attention. When Gauden was sure Rochelle had been watching closely enough he stepped out of the stall and gestured her to take his place. "Your go."

Ha! He did know how to smile even when her jokes were half assed and rather horrible. She could have flounced in place quite happily with Gauden's almost smile, and flipped hair over her shoulder instead. The glass smith listened well enough, too encouraged by the lack of murder from the runners to worry about whether or not she'd actually be brushing something against the grain of their fur. That sounded rather painful.
The stall felt small with the beast inside, though it didn't speak of filth or animal stench the way she'd learned some of the less cared for places did. Granted, that was mostly about wherries. They stank. Ugh. In the last .02 seconds of Pin being adorable and pleased, she impressed Rochelle much more than a few hours around wherrie pens. (She ate them because they were delicious and annoying. No other reasons were required.) It probably didn't hurt that the teacher didn't damage the eyes when she looked at him.
"Right. So. Not going to wound Ms Pin with the wrong strokes of the brush." She almost cooed at her again but, instead, started to brush her off. "With the whole beastcrafter thing, are you one'a those guys who likes animals more than people?"
