Vertigo had to live through a very difficult childhood. Both of his parents had deceased, and he had lived with a cousin, from there forth. Vertigo has no memories of his birth parents [who were Fire Benders], and very little remembrance of his step-parents [who were Earth Benders].
Vertigo became good friends with his cousin, but they were not together for long. His step-parents both died in a house fire, and his cousin wasn't to be found anywhere. Vertigo then left, on his own, as a wanderer, with no family, no home, and no friends.
Thinking of how his cousin always wanted to become stronger, Vertigo wanted to train himself hard, in remembrance. But he had no Bending abilities that he knew of.
Vertigo lived many years wandering the Earth Kingdom, and the areas surrounding it. When he decided he was old enough, he finally left the region. Vertigo then moved on to the Fire Nation, where he thought he could find better training.
Soon after he became a member of the Fire Nation, Vertigo discovered that it was the home of his bending abilities. Never told by anyone, Vertigo was a Fire Bender from birth. Raised in the Earth Kingdom, Vertigo always expected that he was an Earth Bender.
Vertigo trained hard, in remembrance of his cousin from there on out. Remaining a wanderer, though, he never discovered his cousin's turnout.
