From an objective standpoint, the actual mission Rick was on wasn't so bad. A little tedious at times and a lot of waiting around, it almost felt like he was on a vacation of sorts. Almost. Because Rick didn't do well with inactivity and while the basic trainees and the Death Hunter he was stationed with were actually good company and knew well enough to leave him alone, he had to deal with Before.

It wasn't as if the Mist was intentionally being annoying, Before's attempts at befriending Rick just rubbed him the wrong way. In that Before was actually trying to make friends. Rick would have loved to tell the idiot to shove it where the sun doesn't shine but part of his mission? Was to actually dig up information on the people he was with. Apparently that came part and parcel of trying to get into the intelligence line of work.

And speaking of Before, he caught sight of the short Mist trainee approaching him with what appeared to be, "Cookies?"

Before didn't know how many days or weeks he would be spending here at the Off-Island outpost. He didn't know exactly what he was supposed to do (besides not die) or what role he would be playing in Rick's mission. The only thing he did know was Rick was a grouch and the Moon did not like him 8C

Okay so Before acknowledge he didn't have his game-face on and wasn't in his right state of mind (many would ask if he had one to begin with, which he does, believe it or not) at the time of introduction. So he did what he always did whenever he knew someone didn't favor his presence: Before avoided Rick like the plague.

Except it wasn't particularly effective given how small the compound was and he was sure to be on perimeter watch with the guy at one point. And that meant he was going to have to worm his way into Rick's heart through his stomach! 'Course he didn't know what sort of food Rick liked and their resources were laughably limited but he manage to make a batch of butter cookies.

"Y-yeah, cookies! Woulda baked you chocolate chip buuuut pantry didn't come stocked with the right ingredients."

There was a look of incredulity on Rick's face as he stared at the proffered plate of cookies. "Did you seriously just waste our rations to bake those?" he glowered, brows knitting together as the corners of his mouth edged down sharply.

Before looked taken aback, "I wouldn't say wasted, I mean I'm totes sure I used the right amount 'cause baking's more of a science than cooking so-"

"Stop talking," Rick snapped as he brought a hand to his own face and pulled down slowly. He was obviously trying to reign in his temper and attitude with his fellow Intermediate Trainee. "No, I don't want any of your cookies."

"You sure? I made them for you..." the Misty reasoned, teal eyes looking at the Moon Hunter hopefully.

"I'm diabetic," Rick lied, hoping this would be enough to put Before off the idea of offering him any more baked goods.

"Oh, s**t, seriously? Dude, I'm totes sorry!" Before apologized in dismay as he hid the plate behind his back. A pause. "Type one or two?" The Misty asked.

"What?"

"Which do you have, type one or type two diabetes?"

Again that incredulous look returned to Rick's face before it's quickly replaced with annoyance and impatience. "Does it really matter?" the Moon trainee grunts dismissively.

"Guess not, just well, iffin you might need an insulin shot or something, shouldn't the rest of the team know about it? 'Cause that's what happened during one of my mom's charity functions. One of the guests forgot to take their insulin and mid-event they ended up needing to go to the hospital and-"

"Seriously. Shut. Up." Rick snarled through grit teeth, rubbing his temples in a futile attempt to alleviate the dull ache behind his eyes. "I don't give a s**t about your-" he paused, turning to face Before, "Did you say your mom had a charity function?"

"Yeeeeeaah? She plans and hosts a lot of functions and events, it gives dad a pretty good tax shield and it gets mom in the papers. Lifestyle section but that's what matters to her anyway," Before shrugged. It wasn't that big of a deal to him, and it wasn't to Tori either whenever they compared notes on their parents in high society.

It was, apparently, something of a big deal to Rick. Just not in the good way. "So let me get this straight: You're rich? I mean, before you became a Hunter trainee."

"You know, I never really thought about it that way."

Rick ground his teeth, his lips pressing into a tight line as he thought that Before couldn't possibly be serious. Wait, no, Before was definitely serious. After all, he was just some spoiled, entitled little rich boy who thought he wanted adventure or some s**t. Rick took a step towards Before, giving him the once over before jabbing the Mist trainee in the chest with a finger. "Did you ever worry whether you and your family will be evicted within the week?" Jab. "Did you ever worry about having food to eat the next day? Huh, little rich boy?"

"It-it never occurred to me to-"

Jab. "Did you worry you were going to have to drop out of school to get a job?" Jab. "Did you get to where you were because mommy and daddy just bought your way into-"

"Whoa, dude, what the ********> it was Before's turn to interrupt but unlike Rick he stepped backwards, putting distance between them. "Yeah, I grew up not wanting stuff. But my parents being rich means jack s**t on Deus. I busted my a** to get to where I am now."

Rick had to admit Deus didn't promote people unless they did something since waking, maybe he owed the kid an apology. But just as he was about to begrudgingly say he was sorry, Before continued to talk.

"I know I don't look like some super buff juggernaut, but neither do you and you're about to hit Full Hunter status."

"Don't compare yourself to me," Rick warned, narrowing his eyes. He wanted to tell the kid it wasn't Before's physique that made him question whether or not the Mist trainee deserved to be awake, let alone his coat.

"A-and okay, sure, maybe I survived most of those encounters with the freaks because they sorta didn't notice me. That's some sorta skill too!"

"That's just ******** dumb luck!" The Moon trainee declared. He was about to say more when the tinny beep of a phone receiving a text message sounded. Rick didn't bother to check his phone, he didn't it feel it vibrate.

The lack of vibration in Rick's pants meant only one thing: the message that had arrived was for Before. The Misty was quick to excuse himself and retrieve the device. After a moment of reading, Rick found the shorter guy hugging him. No warning, no heads up.

Just. BOOM. BRO-HUG.

And Rick was not happy. His initial annoyance with his fellow Intermediate was reaching critical level when he heard Before apologize, back off, and quickly explain, "My friends are totes okay! They're okay oh s**t, I gotta go see how okay they are after the rescue mission and uh sorry about the cookies and the man-tackle and uh-"

"Go. Now," Rick groused, relieved that the moron was finally giving him space.
