Quickie RP Contest

These are like an rp contest, only really really short! A prompt will be posted related an olympic event/game and everyone has 30 minutes or less to post their response. No stragglers will be accepted (barring GAIA crashing like an a*****e). It's creativity on the quick!

This game will begin on Sept 2 at 5pm CST (6pm EST, 3pm PST) and last for exactly 30 minutes, barring huge Gaia crashes and errors.

1) You only have 30 minutes to get your entries in and that's IT. Pay attention to the time while you're working because NO entries will be accepted after the closing post.

2) Your response should be in rp format (as if you were writing a solo). There is no minimum word count (though keep in mind you're probably not going to win based off two sentences), but try and keep your entries under 1000 words.

3) Only post your entries in this thread, all other chatter should be done in the main thread.

4) Be good sports and play nice with each other.

Ice skating
The cold and often icy world of Zirankexuejijin was a perfect host for the official ice skating events of the ____ Olympics. The ice was like glass, as close to perfection as they could clean it between events, slick and shimmering. It was the perfect playground for the bladed artists that would soon be making their appearances in a beautiful mixture of dance and pure athletics.

The rink was huge, surrounded by seats filled with chilly but well bundled spectators. Of course staying on their feet was the most important part, but who would take the risks and try for greatness? And who would be leaving with nothing more than the cold burn of ice?

This will begin in just about 2 1/2 hours!

I will try to post the prompt at 4:59 so that you guys have the full 30 minutes to respond. All entries will be posted in this thread.

Make sure you get them in on time! Any time stamps after 5:30 5:40, even by 1 minute will not be counted.

Prompt

You've been preparing for this moment for months, years even. Blood, sweat, and tears has gone into the preparations but it's finally your time to shine in the name of your princess. Or is it?

As you nervously await your turn to compete an urgent message suddenly appears via your ring. The issue is extremely pressing. But is it more pressing then your performance? If you go to attend to the problem you will surely forefit your chance to compete. What's more important though? The message and the information it contains? Or the competition you've put so much effort into and the possible medal you could take home to your princess? Can the message wait?

Due to my idiocy, forgetting to unlock the thread, this will now be open until 5:40.

Figure skating, the one dignified sport to appeal to Aria of Cosmos. When she got the message, however, she had to bite her lower lip to keep herself from crying. The one sport that she loved. The one where she could prove herself the ultimate in Cosmos's service: beauty, grace, everything that she stood for.

But she was a page, soon to be a knight in the service of her princess.

She quickly found one of the people in charge of the event to inform then that she was being called away. If she could make up the time, wonderful. If not, then... she thanked them for the opportunity.

With that done, she hurried off. There was a job to be done.

Ice skating was not something Alkanet had done, at least not in years. He had done it, as a child, when back on Earth. It wasn’t something he’d trained at or been some expert at. Really it had been something fun to do in the winter, something he did with his mother even. He knew he didn’t stand a chance against some of the others, who would be here, he was sure some of the other knights who would join this game would have trained for it.

So he waited watching and worrying, fretting even, as he wrung his hands in his lap. He was nervous for this even though he was here for fun, to make friends, and take a break from his duties. But he was worried about injuring himself in a way that he couldn’t have done swimming or competing in any of the other competitions he’d participated in. This time he could fall and break a bone, and that had him nervous and worried. Just as he was being motioned that he was up next a message came in, it was important but wasn't this important as well? He thought it was, it was to him. Shaking his head he prepared himself,m hoping his Princess would forgive him for ignoring his message.

He knew he couldn’t do spins, jumps and turns, not like he was sure some could. But that didn’t stop him from trying. He was going to have fun, try to push his worry to the back of his mind.

Iseult paced back and forth, taking deep breaths. She felt absolutely adorable in her pretty ice skating costume, but she was still panicked. The Page was, generally, by no means graceful, and she was almost certain that she would be slipping and falling on her arse as soon as she took a step on the ice, no matter how much practice or preparation she had. Certainly her teacher was confident in her skills, but in front of all these people would be the moment that she embarrassed herself. On the other hand, all that practice had to mean something. She remembered her last session, executing the entire routine perfectly, without a single mistake. That had been what she wanted. That, and the glow of pride on her teacher's face.

Oh yeah. She had a chance at this.

She hadn't expected any interruptions to her panicked pacing except maybe a fellow contestant dropping by to rib her a little, so the message came as a massive surprise. She stared at it in shock. Surely this was not meant for her! A serious crisis? That didn't seem like something most would want her anywhere near. But, well, she had been summoned...

This was the hard part, she thought. What was she to do? A critical situation, presented to her, and she ought to respond to the summons. But if she did, she would give up her chance to try and do something right at these games for once!

She weighed her options. Turned over her considerations.

And she decided.

Iseult of Earth went to the judges and informed them she would not be competing. There were things far more important than Olympic gold. Even if she would likely be unneeded, and there was a not small chance she would make things worse, the Page wanted to help out in any way she could.

Almina hadn’t really been too excited for the ice skating competition, but it was another chance to win a medal and really prove that Jupiter was the very best planet in the solar system…in the whole galaxy for that matter.

She had been practicing her grace and poise, and trying very hard to ignore the temptation to just use her brute strength in this event. It was what she was best at, after all. Almina was stretching, warming up, focusing on deep breathing and all of the nonsense that came with events like these, when…when she got the message.

Normally she would have jumped at the chance to go on a mission like this, after all, that is what really gained favor with the princess, working and doing her job, not dancing and gliding around on the ice, but today…what a letdown! She had been working so hard and now she was being called away?

She pouted. She couldn’t help it. The fierce warrior was pouting. Duties were duties…but it wasn’t often that she worked hard for something like this, and it wasn’t fair that she was going to miss her chance to gain a medal for her princess…a chance to be recognized for something outside of being a knight. A chance to be praised beyond any of her fellow pages. It was a chance to…

She paused. What was she thinking. This wasn’t even a question. If she refused the summons…then she didn’t deserve to be a page of Jupiter. She wasn’t worthy of any medals if she shirked in her duty. No. This was something she had to do, no matter if she liked it or not. Her job was to be a protector, not a figure skater. She was ready to go protect. Ready to go continue being a defender of the galaxy.

This was the real way to make her princess happy, not with medals or praises from other knights and pages. Her princess was what mattered, and she would make her proud.

It was time to go now, time to take care of business. The real business.

She glanced back at the ice skating rink and gave a scoff, before running off ready to complete her newest, much more beneficial mission.

Väinämöinen had been preparing for this well. In his home country had several month-long winters so he had good changes to practise for the ice skating performance. However, when his time was to slide in ice, the message scroll popped into existence from his ring.

The message made his face pale. His friend, a knight from Jupiter that he had shared many adventures with, had been founded in the battle severely. A strong feel of worry run through him and he just wanted to run to his side but he knew the travel there would take days. He couldn't let his princess down by giving up in sport which was his specialty. Besides, his performance wasn't that long anyway. With heavy heart he started his performance, doing it for his wounded friend.

But after the performance was over, he hurried away from the ice and went to look for Princess Cosmos. This was news that he needed to report to her. And maybe she would forgive him for wanting to leave the rest of Olympics and go to his friend's side. She had to.

Nimue wasn't much for skating, even though it was a huge deal around Avalon especially during the winter; her knight-master thought it was funny to train her on the ice itself, citing possible deployment on Mercury (but honestly who would ever go there). However, she'd made herself a solemn vow that she would enter as many events as she possibly could, and since she'd missed a few others due to, um, extracurricular activities, she couldn't really afford to miss this one.

She was lacing up her skates again after spending a few minutes barefoot and watching the competition (******** Mercury knights!) when the rolled-up scroll appeared. Maybe it's just a good-luck wish, she thought, reaching over to unroll the missive. She could hope that one of the friends she'd made during her short time here had enough good sportsmanship in their blood to wish something like that, but no--of course it was a message from her knight master. "You've got to be kidding me," said Nimue, narrowing her eyes at the boldly-written, thinly-disguised orders--she was to leave immediately, apparently some kind of argument was brewing between a group of pages, someone had overheard one of them plotting to teach another page a lesson about talking so boldly about Princess Whatserface. Artur thought that the lesson she'd learn from watching him break it up was more important than winning a gold medal for Earth. Well, she had news for the current Knight of Avalon.

It so wasn't. It was completely unacceptable that she'd only medaled in one competition and she wasn't going to let another chance at gold (or silver or bronze) get ripped from her grasping fingers just to watch a couple of old men dissuade some pages from fighting over their princess's honor. For one thing, she was on in two turns, and that was basically no time at all in ice skating. For another thing, she had really had enough of Artur bossing her around. It was the Olympics. They were supposed to get to know other knights. The whole thing was about fostering galactic bonds between knights of different stripes, different Princesses. Going in and stopping s**t before it began, she was pretty sure, wouldn't really benefit anyone the way making friends would.

And the gold. She really wanted it.

That just wasn't how it was going to be, period. Pages did stupid s**t, knights broke up the stupid s**t, and squires did not have to be involved, that was really all there was to say on the matter.

She crumpled the parchment in her hands into a tiny, tight ball and tossed the missive over her shoulder. She (and the Princess, and Prince Endymion, she supposed) was not going to be deprived of a medal for a lesson she'd already learned eight thousand times!

The mummer of the crowd began before the skaters had arrived and continued into the competition, pausing only in the awe of the performances. It was a fast silence when each skater took to the ice, one that everyone adhered to without command. The dam would break occasionally, when a particularly impressive jump or spin landed perfectly, and then would quickly recede. Roarke, who had indulged in the excitement with spectators in the beginning, had blocked all of that out by now. The cold reminded her of her new home on Pluto, which warmed her heart if not her body. There was only herself and the carefully polished ice of Zirankexuejijin. That was all she needed. The sport was no stranger to her -- it was something she did for fun as a child, to no serious degree, but had taken it up again in earnest weeks before upon the notification that she would be competing in the Galactic Olympics. It was something her nimble body could be honed for. She smiled, wishing herself luck. The previous knight was about halfway through their skate. "For the honour of Pluto," she said softly, "and the Time Princess!"

The signal coming from her signet ring cut through her thoughts like a knife. The knight on the ice posed in their final moment and the flood of sound was as startling as the unexpected summons. Even as it ebbed into murmurs again, Roarke could not block it out. She was due out there in a matter of minutes. But her signet ring, her planet, also commanded the same. Her fellow knights knew she was competing in the Galactic Olympics, so why would they message her at such a crucial time? And herself, just a page, what difference could she make in some greater scheme? A mistake, perhaps. Just a mishandled message...

Roarke looked down at her skating uniform, the skirt of which she was unconsciously crushing with her fists. She wore her planet's colors proudly. The skirt fell from her fingers. Resolve washed across her features. "You are a page of Pluto and that is enough." If she did manage to claim a medal, there would be no honour in it if it meant discarding her duties. She knew the severity of her knightly order when she signed up -- time meant everything and nothing. Roarke would answer the call. Excusing herself from the lineup, she took one last look at the glittering rink before leaving, her mind torn, but her heart decided.
