Shop History

The Keiji Forge was developed back in the early days of the village when people were first settling the area. The Keiji family has always consisted of metal working civilians, or at least that is as far as their well known history goes back. The metal shop was highly successful in the times before the war and they were even more so when they started receiving government orders to help equip the shinobi of Konohagakure. However, during the war itself the shop was dealt a great level of damage: opposing shinobi that managed to enter the village quickly raided the shop of both the manufactured weapons and the pure metal stores that they had. This was a painful blow to the family and, without the supplies or the facilities, the shop closed down.

The building itself was quickly repaired because the upstairs floor acts as the home for the members of the Keiji family that run the shop; but it wasn’t until years later that the forge itself was repaired and reopened for the public by Keiji Washi, father of the current owner, Keiji Yukio. Today, Washi is retired and Yukio is beginning to train the third generation of the new shop. The family specializes in custom made weapons that, while they do take quite a bit of time to create, are unmatched in quality, effectiveness and craftsmanship.

Shop Layout

The forgery is tucked back in the market district of Konoha. It is most easily recognizable by its trademark blue metal roof. This was the shops most distinct feature in the past, though it was then made out of wood that had to be repainted after every summer, and it was recreated with long sheets of metal when the shop was resurrected in order to inspire the same awe that it did back in its prime. However, with Yukio in charge of the shop there have been ornamental metal sheets and molds added to the front of the store to display some of his custom handy work. The floor of the shop itself is made of simple wooden mats that have been carefully woven together and the walls are made from sheets of bamboo. The area in which customers are allowed is more or less open air in the sense that there is no door or curtains to block the inside from the outside. When entering the shop, there are various basic weapons hung on the walls and laying on several tables throughout the room. There is one empty table with three chairs in the back right corner, towards the counter, where Yukio will sit down with his customers to discuss custom plans and projected prices.

At the back of the room there is a counter that spans from one side of the room to the other, completely cutting off the customer from the back forge. There is a small door, reaching only up to the hip of an average sized man, which swings into the floor room to allow employees out from behind the counter. Behind the counter is a wall hosting many larger, more expensive weapons for customers to inquire about. In the center of that wall is an opening whose edges have been blackened with soot, presumably, that leads to the forge.

Customers are not allowed back in the forge. It is a very large room with a raised dirt floor, since it is far more fire resistant than wood, with numerous fire pits, anvils, tool racks, cooling tables, and other needed supplies. The forge itself is well stocked. There is an underground room hidden in the forge where they keep their metal supplies since they are far more difficult to track than manufactured items. In the back corner there is a door leading to the back alley and a curtained staircase leading up to the Keiji family home.

Currently, there are seven members of the Keiji family residing in the upper section of the forge. The owner and father, Keiji Yukio; his wife, Sada; their eldest child and only daughter, Amaya; and their toddler quadruplets, Mitsu, Toshi, Kaemon, and Hiroshi. Sada holds no occupation aside from being a mother and tending to the house. She was never adept at working in the metal shop. Amaya has come to an age where she is old enough to begin assisting her father with small tasks in the shop and helping her mother with almost anything around the house. However, due to her enrollment in the academy she is often unaccounted for in the home. Yukio, aside from lunch time and after hours, can always be found in his shop working on a weapon or sketching out a new idea.

Items For Purchase

The only competing forgery in the village used to be run by the Senju and the Hyuuga clans. However, with all of the political upheaval, they have more or less resigned the rights to a non-shinobi based family. The stores agree to make prices equal in order to make customers from both shops content with the transition. One downside to the change, however, is that it takes extra time for Yukio to validate or to get proof of a person’s rank before he can sell them restricted items. While this does put a slight damper on the system, it is still better than having no forge at all.

Custom Weapons

The Keiji Forge’s specialty is custom made weapons. Because of their competing with The Old Forge, this is what keeps the Keiji in business. Luckily for them, there will always be a collector, a paranoid, an artist, or someone who is in the need of seeing their vision transformed into reality. The majority of these weapons are made simply for aesthetic purposes and are not sharpened, which means Yukio does not need to screen his customers before a purchase. However, if they are requesting a weapon for means of use then he does require a significant amount of background information on the person before he will make them a weapon. After all, the family insignia is permanently placed into each custom piece that he fabricates. Regardless of the purpose of the weapon, there is a process that everyone must follow in order to order a custom weapon. Then there is the time needed to make the weapon, which is especially lengthy because Yukio purchases the raw materials himself and does not keep stores for custom weapons on hand. However, customers are usually okay with waiting a while longer for their weapon because they don’t have to do any of the foot work.

1. Preliminary Request
This is the part where the customer actually approaches Yukio for a custom weapon. They are not allowed to approach Amaya for a request because Yukio believes people have ulterior motives when they try to wheel and deal with a child. The idea must be clearly described. If an image is not available at the time he will request one upon their next meeting.

2. Introductory Meeting
During the Preliminary Request, Yukio will set up a day and a time with the customer if he is too busy or too deep in a task to provide them the appropriate amount of attention. This process is conducted at the small, round table on the show floor. At this time a design will be finalized, details will be smoothed out, the process will be explained, and the pricing will be broken down. While people are welcome to try and haggle, Yukio is very set on his prices and very rarely budges. However, he is always open for labor exchange.

3. Background, Rank, and Motive Checks
If the customer is a shinobi ,there is an extra waiting period while Yukio does his research. He will check criminal records and any public files on the customer in order to make sure he isn’t deal with a fugitive or someone who is plain shady. Yukio will also take the time to ask motive based questions about the use and the design of the weapon. This will also happen if the customer is looking for a sharpened weapon. There are also legal papers that Yukio has to file in order to approve the work. It is possible for a job to be denied at this point.

4. Materials Request
Since the customer is not required to bring in their own raw materials, though Yukio will rarely oppose if they do, there is an extra process in order to obtain the metals. If the materials cannot be obtained in the village then a messenger hawk will be sent out to the closest known dealer with an order request. This is a difficult process because it also involves paying someone to guard and deliver the materials to the village. This process can take anywhere from an hour, if the materials are available within the confines of the village, to weeks depending on how far away the materials are being transported from and how long it takes to hire an escort.

5. Fabrication
This is the most difficult part of the process since it absorbs time and skill. With custom made weapons, people are buying both a craftsman and an artist. Yukio takes great pride in his work, so it may be an extended period of time before the fabrication is complete.

6. Inspection/Transaction
The customer is summoned either by Amaya or a messenger hawk, depending on which is immediately available. Messenger hawks have the potential to take longer since they go to a predetermined spot and sit there while the child can seek out a specific person within the confines of the village walls. If the customer does not receive the hawk by nightfall, they return to the forge and will be sent out the next day. Amaya has to be back before her war time designated curfew. Once the customer is reached, they are expected to come to the forge for a weapon inspection. This is the customer’s time to look over their creation and see if there is anything they would like to tweak or if there are imperfections they would like worked out before the final sale. Once the weapon has been approved by the customer, Yukio will disappear in the back to place his seal on it and then complete the money transaction. He does not do payment plans. The entire sum must be there at the time of the transaction.

7. Weapon Testing
If the weapon has been sharpened and is meant for use in combat, Yukio will take the customer and the weapon out back in order to make sure the weapon is sharp enough and is to the wielder’s preference. If there is something wrong with the way the weapon is weighted or shaped or if it isn’t properly sharpened, this is the customer’s chance to bring it to his attention. Once the weapon is approved, Yukio will disappear to put his seal on it and then he will complete the transaction like any other.

7 + 0 = 7 Failure

It was just after dinner in the upstairs home of the Keiji family; the smell of the happily consumed meal lingered and wafted about through the various rooms in the house and the heat from the kitchen mixed and mingled with the heat of the first floor forge and a spring night. Keiji Yukio, the father of the household, was down in the forge doing his final clean up for the evening. Keiji Sada was doing the same in her kitchen; scrubbing the various pots and pans that she had used to make that evening’s meal with. In the living room of the home was eight year-old Keiji Amaya and her two year-old quadruplet brothers; Mitsu, Toshi, Kaemon, and Hiroshi. The five children were playing happily in the room, burning off the last of their energy before it was time to drift off to sleep and lose themselves in a blissfully deep slumber. The four toddlers had yet to master the art of walking, but they were still very mobile, so they would often bump into objects and one another. It was chaos, but it was a happy chaos. The air was riddled with the laughter of children and the clanging of pots as the boys partook in a game that Amaya could make neither heads nor tails of. Then again, it was probably the case that there was no actual game going on; just a bunch of toddlers playing around. There was the occasional toy flying through the air and the sporadic thump as someone lost their balance and landed diaper first on the floor, but all was well. However, peace like this, though many would never dare refer to it as peace, was always short lived with toddlers in the house.

There was a harsh, sharp, sudden thud that passed over the mayhem as Amaya was busying herself with Mitsu’s hands tugging at her clothes. As the child turned her head, there was a screeching shrill of tears coming from Hiroshi, who was now rolling on the floor and gripping at the top of his head. The young girl pulled her brother off as her mother magically appeared in the doorway.
”Amaya, what happened in here?” Sada’s voice was full of concern as she magically appeared by the young boy, cradling him in her arms and cooing against the tears. While Sada was the very worrisome, affectionate type, Amaya was more of the fix the problem type. ”I’m sorry, Okaa-san, I took my eyes off him for too long it seems.” The young girl knew her place, so she quickly went into the kitchen to find some ice; which was never too far to be found since there were so many bumps that occurred in the house. Upon return, the girl touched her mother’s shoulder to gain her attention. ”Allow me to ice his head while you play with the others.” The small girl knew that her mother adored playing with the boys, but often didn’t have time when keeping up the appearance of the home, and this was a convenient excuse to let her mother have that time with her sons.

With a smile, Sada patted Amaya on the head and passed the wailing toddler into her daughter’s arms. It was no easy task to hold the boy, the ice, and try to situate herself on the floor, but Amaya managed somehow. Maybe it was because she had worked with the boys so much over the past two years that it had become natural. Sada slipped off, sitting on the floor a ways away and being swarmed by her sons in doing so. It wasn’t often that she got to play with them, so the toddlers selfishly fought for her attention every moment it was available. However, this proven problematic for the daughter because, even though the toddler in her arms was hurting and crying, he still wanted to be with mother. The boy fought and struggled, pulling at Amaya’s arms with his short, chubby fingers in the process. He had had his mother’s attention just moments ago and he wanted it back. Now!

The wooden floor was cool and harsh against the young girl’s bare skin. Her bones dug into the unrelenting material and the added weight of her little brother wasn’t helping the matter. Soon enough she would lose the feeling in the front of her lower legs, but until then she would just have to grin and bear it. However, since that wasn’t enough on its own, the girl was trying to hold down a tantrum ridden toddler while holding a pack of ice on his head…on something that hurt him very much. To say the very least, it was no easy task. However, the small girl was well versed in the ways of the toddler, so this shouldn’t give her too terribly much trouble.

It took some strength, but the oldest of the Keiji children was eventually able to sit the toddler down on her leg while pinning his legs with her free one by crossing it over her thigh, tuck his arms down to his side with her left arm, and follow Hiroshi’s thrashing head with the ice pack at the same time. Amaya looked like some bizarre cross between a contortionist and a conjoined twin with a midget half. While it was a pleasant image or a comfortable position, it got the job done. Now all the girl had to do was focus on keeping the ice on the back of the vigorously shaking head while making sure not to press so hard that she invoked and even scarier tantrum.

While the two year old boy was pinned to his sister’s lap, Amaya spared a look over at the majority of her family. All three of the unrestricted boys were pawing and climbing on their mother. Mitsu was trying to get her to look at a dully colored, scuffed wooden block while Toshi was attempting to walk onto the woman’s legs and into her lap. Then there was Kaemon who was happily clinging to her arm, white knuckled on the sleeve of her dress. It was a happy sight, but there was still a member missing. Actually, there was often a member missing. While he was never far away, Amaya’s father, Yukio, was almost always down in the forge working on something or another. It used to upset the small girl when she was younger, but as she grew she came to understand that he was the reason mother was able to stay home and raise a family. Then, as he finally had her start helping by working in the shop, Amaya realized the work was very time consuming. Now all the girl could do was hope that her brothers would grow to understand the same instead of begrudging their father for his absence.

It was then that the female child had somewhat of a revelation. With her decision to pursue the path of the shinobi, especially once she got out of the Academy, it was entirely possible that she too was going to be missing in the home quite often. There would be missions and…well, she didn’t know what all to expect, but she knew that it involved less time at home than she had been spending now. It was a heavy thought that now weighed on her mind, but it was a necessary evil if she was going to shape the world someday. Or at least be an influence towards the path she wanted it to take. Amaya didn’t know why she felt the need to make a change in the world, but she didn’t like what she saw. Would she be able to make any sort of impact? Well, only time herself could tell that tale.

Much like the mighty alligator, toddlers were not creatures of great stamina. Young Hiroshi was no exception to this rule. With simply her body weight, Amaya was able to hold her brother in place long enough to tire him. The boy no longer tried to thrash around uncontrollably or shake his head about wildly. While Hiroshi wasn’t about to fall asleep in his sister’s lap, his energy had drained quickly and he would have to take some time to recover before returning to his crazed frenzy. Since the small child sat relatively still in her lap, there was the occasional twitch to see if he could start fighting again or not, the young girl stole a glance over at her family. Sada, her mother, was happily sitting on the floor while being swarmed by her youngest offspring. Mitsu was holding up a dull, scuffed colored block for her to see. Of course, he got the obligatory “Oh, how nice, sweety, what do you have there?” that the mother would give to all of her children when she was trying to focus or just really wasn’t that interested. However, at the younger ages that didn’t register, so it was more than enough to thrill the child. Then there was Toshi who was trying to walk onto their mother’s lap. It was an odd thing that toddlers seemed to do. Then would fall forward, catching themselves on their victim’s chest or stomach, and then try to step up onto their legs. It didn’t make much sense to Amaya, but she was certain that she had probably attempted the same when she was their age. Then there was Kaemon. He was a bit different from the group; quieter, calmer, more like his sister than any of his brothers. This young boy was more than happy to simply cling to his mother’s arm as she sat there on the floor with them. It was a happy sight, but it wasn’t quite the whole family.

Aside from Hiroshi and Amaya being segregated from the group for the sake of icing the bump on his head, their father, Yukio, was also missing from the happy brood. Though she hadn’t in the past, Amaya had come to understand why her father spent so much time in the shop. Since Sada was a stay at home mom, it was Yukio’s responsibility alone to feed himself, his wife, and all five of their children while still keeping a roof over their heads, clothes on their bodies, and now his eldest enrolled at the Academy. It wasn’t a cheap endeavor that they had pursued when they had children, but they were all happy enough and their children were healthy, strong, and seemingly completely thrilled with the lives that they had been handed. They were loved and well taken care of, so there was nothing to be upset about. However, Amaya also knew that her brothers didn’t understand why their father was gone so often. They were too young to understand that father was gone because he loved them, not because he didn’t love them. Unfortunately, all the elder sister would do was hope that in the future they would come to realize the same that she had and that they wouldn’t grow to resent the man who worked so hard to provide a comfortable life for them all.

It was then that the young girl was struck with a sort of revelation; after she graduated from the Academy she was going to be gone more and more. With missions and…whatever else it was that shinobi attended to, her time was going to all be committed. Though she hoped otherwise, it was entirely possible that her brothers would come to loath her for her absence. While that was an almost upsetting and disturbing thought, Amaya knew that she didn’t have much of a choice. She didn’t like what she saw in the world, so she was going to have to catalyst the changes that she wanted to see in order to create the world that she wanted for her family. If they hated her for it, so be it; but she was going to do what she felt was best for them no matter what the cost was.

The young female Keiji lost herself in her own thoughts as the toddler being held in her lap settled in his confinement. All of the boys were at that stage in life where they would fight for control, but not for very long. It just took a bit of establishing one’s dominance in order to get them to cooperate. Luckily for Amaya, her mother had learned this lesson hard and fast in her daughter’s toddler-hood and she made sure to instill that same unwavering authority in her daughter as well so that she could help with her brothers. Someday it might mold the young girl into a leader, but she had to get over that introversion that her mother didn’t seem to understand. No matter, she had so far raised a good kid and there were four more of them well on their way. Sada had to watch herself, though, with how quickly she had grown it wasn’t uncommon for her to think of Amaya as a very small adult. No, she was a kid just like any other kid…well, maybe not just like any other kid.

Amaya’s mind drifted back to her first day at the Academy, which had ended just hours before. It had been such an eventful day, but there were many details that she was keeping from her parents. She wasn’t one to keep secrets, but pursuing the path of the shinobi meant that she had to learn and fast. One of those things that she simply failed to mention was being jumped by Ko-sensei during their Nawanuke no Jutsu training. How well would that go over with her parents? Before I knew what was going on, my teacher had tied me up and put a piece of tape over my mouth so I couldn’t scream or struggle. No, that didn’t seem like cause for alarm. Then there was the incident with that Akeru infatuated woman. She had tremendous power, which would be wonderful if one was learning from her, but she used it for intimidating and threatening a group of Academy students. Academy students! Amaya and her class weren’t even a blip on a shinobi’s radar yet, much less to someone as powerful as she was. First, this woman came in a crushed that man who had mentored me; but once he was gone I thought she was going to kill Yae. We’re lucky Akeru arrived in time to prevent any such matters. Feeling like you were going to die from something other than physical exertion on the first day of school. That would be no big deal! Then there were all the different messes with Akeru. As a matter of fact, the child had removed him entirely from her stories aside from mentioning that he had given her some pointers because if she did mention him but then tried to leave out all those inconvenient truths there would be massive holes in the retelling of her day. It had been difficult, but she didn’t have much of a choice.

Even though she tried to shake it, that image played over and over in her head every time Amaya thought of Akeru. Each time it crawled out of the back of her mind she saw that glinting arc of his nodachi curving down towards the pale, tender skin of her throat. There was that look in the eyes that screamed “I’m not who you know me to be”. It had been a terrifying instance and the girl didn’t like to think about it, but she couldn’t stop herself either. However, even though it was a scary situation, Amaya was proud of the way she reacted. Even though it wouldn’t have been in time, she at least made a feeble effort to defend herself. Then, she was able to come back from that race of adrenaline to rejoin her mentor and tend to his wounds. He had saved her life after all. While it was a bit twisted, the young girl almost felt closer to him after having experienced that. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to act as a companion and help him or if it was some sort of messed up curiosity, but Amaya still enjoyed what little time she had to work with him. However, one thing did terrify her. What if having seen that meant that Akeru wouldn’t want her as a student anymore? What a change of events that would be; going from hand chosen to unwanted in the course of a single afternoon! Then again, there was always the option that he would want to keep her close since she had already been subjected to that little outburst. That way he would risk even more people experiencing the same thing. The black haired girl couldn’t be sure; it was all speculation.

Coming back from her thoughts, Amaya looked down at her brother’s head only to see that she had allowed the ice to drift to the side of the small bump, which wasn’t doing much good. She was going to have to pay closer attention if she was going to take care of him before he went berserk again.

With a silent sigh of mild irritation, the female child slid the ice back on top of the slowly forming bump beneath the tender scalp of her little brother. It was apparent that Hiroshi was still exhausted from his earlier struggle, and it was getting near his bed time too, so he would only put up an occasional fight; fight, in this case, being some sort of dissatisfied wriggle. Normally, Amaya wouldn’t be as tired as she was, but it had been a long day at the Academy and she had worked very hard to learn as much as possible during her first day. She had learned various jutsu and done several extra credit assignments as well. That didn’t even include the extra stuff she did while working with Akeru. Sure, Amya normally ran around the house playing with her brothers or working in the forge, but she wasn’t used to all the interaction with new people and all the new concepts that she had been presented with. It probably didn’t help that she hadn’t been raised by shinobi and, thusly, didn’t have an understanding of chakra or how to use it. That was alright, though, because she also believed that that gave her some sort of advantage; she understood the civilian sector of the village inside and out. Well, she understood how their way of life was and how they functioned.

Amaya truly had a blessed upbringing. She had a mother and a father who not only loved her unconditionally, but they hadn’t made her childhood easy and they supported her in her pursuits of the future. She had chores and learned all about responsibility. Not only was she expected to be an exemplary older sister, but she was also expected to help attend to and maintain the well being and happiness of the four youngest Keiji males. Then there was the fact that she was expected to learn down in the forge and help the family live. Sure, she didn’t make much of an impact at all, but no matter what she did it made one less thing that her father, Yukio, would have to do himself; her work was greatly appreciated from the over worked man. Amaya’s assistance was especially appreciated when the Academy or the military sects put in a large order. Sure, they were typically for mundane weapons that Yukio could make in his sleep, shuriken and kunai were the two most common orders, and had made countless times before, but they were still time consuming. This meant that the female child would spend hours sorting orders and processing. She would sweep the show floor or pass a broom over the top of the dirt forge floor to smooth it out. Amaya would gather loose scraps and sort them as necessary in order to keep her father from injuring himself by stepping on an unnoted piece of shrapnel. However, Yukio wouldn’t let her help with the actual manufacturing of weapons because she was so young; though she always had him fooled into believing she was older than she was. He was certain that she would begin manufacturing sooner than he would have normally intended, but she was something special and he wasn’t about to restrain her based on his views of the age group.

However, that same girl was well enough away from the forge for now in both body and mind. Sure, it was only one story up, hovering directly about the forge, but Amaya had a distinct separation between home and work. They were two different worlds and she wasn’t about to mix them with one another. Her mind was on nursing the bump on her brother’s head and being a part of the wonderful family that she had been placed with. It was a wonderful sight and a wonderful life and she wasn’t about to t give it up for anything. That was exactly why she was becoming a shinobi; to defend the image before her.

Amaya’s mind was drawn back to her task when she suddenly felt the boy in her arms get heavier. Hiroshi was fighting the fight with all of his sleep, but without being able to move in order to wake himself it was a losing battle. His sister smiled before leaning down to kiss the top of his head. The toddler’s body had gone limp and his head fell forward in the decisive end to the struggle. Amaya looked over towards her mother with the other three boys, all of which were slowing rapidly. Mitsu had settled into a seat on the ground, randomly pushing blocks from left to right and back. He wasn’t very focused and it was obvious that he was beginning to tire as the movement of the blocks got slower and slower, his hand occasionally falling to rest on the floor before he started himself awake again. Toshi…actually, Amaya wasn’t quite sure what Toshi was trying to accomplish. He was still standing before their mother, and it seemed that he was still trying to walk up into her lap, but he was missing. Instead, he stood there just lifting his right foot and then putting it down; lift, drop, lift, and drop. If it had been anyone else supervising the boys Amaya would have issued a reminder to keep an eye on the toddler in case he fell asleep standing, but it was Sada and there was no one better at tending to the children than her. Amaya was second; a close second, but second none the less. After all, she had allowed Hiroshi to fall off the couch. Finally was Kaemon. He was the only one of the three who was unopposed to sleep when he was tired, so he had laid down on the wooden floor, using his mother’s hand as a pillow and still wrapping his arms around hers so that she couldn’t sneak away in his slumber.

It was a bit later in the evening than the boys usually lasted, but that was because they didn’t have big sister there to play with them all day. That was Amaya’s forte; exhausting the four so that they slept through the night and were asleep by “bed time”. In all actuality, there was no enforced time for the children to be in their beds in the Keiji household. The eldest of the children had been taught to sleep when she was tired until she woke up and the boys were always so tired by the end of the day that it was rare for them to stay up to an inappropriate hour. Even that evening without Amaya’s assistance they were fading fast. It was true; Sada had what every other mother prayed for. To top it off, all of her children were both healthy and happy. This was an almost disturbingly idealist image of a family.

Amaya’s eyes caught movement in the corner and she quickly turned her head. The door that led down to the forge opened to let her father in, who had apparently finished his work for the evening. He smiled first at his wife and then at his daughter as he always did. That was almost his little rule; mother was greeted, then the boys, then Amaya. Everyone had a clear understanding of this hierarchy in the household even though others thought it was odd. The looks on people’s faces were priceless if they came home with Yukio. Instead of his boys running to him for hugs and loves they would run into the kitchen to hasten their mother so that the hugs and kisses could finally trickle down to them. It was true that the young girl didn’t quite understand why the boys were greeted before she was, but it worked out well enough and she was far more patient than the toddlers were. The image always made Amaya smile regardless. The child’s shining black eyes followed her father as he crossed the floor, bent down, and greeted his wife with a kiss. Looking around the room, it was obvious to him that it was time to put the boys in bed. First he lifted Kaemon, since he was already asleep, and disappeared into one of the rooms. This same process was used on both Mitsu and Toshi, kissing each boy on the head as they were lifted. Sure, this many not have been the usual family in the village and they didn’t display such affection in public, but this was a truly tight knit, loving family. Yukio didn’t hesitate to greet his family like he always did when he brought someone into the house. Once the man was done bedding the boys he walked over to Amaya, kissing Hiroshi on the head and then Amaya as he placed a hand on the side of her head. He smiled at his daughter before walking away to sit with his wife. That was Amaya’s favorite part of the day, that kiss on the top of her head and his hand on her cheek as he smiled.

As Amaya watched her brothers being ushered off to bed and her mother being escorted away the female child let her guard down around the boy resting in her lap. Without warning, the child awoke and started flailing every limb in an attempt to break his sister’s hold. While her body weight alone was enough to keep him pinned down it was difficult to restrain both of his arms with just one of hers all while trying to keep the ice on the back of his head. She kept alternating between pinning one arm with her bicep and grabbing at the other with her hand, but one of the other kept on slipping out and away from her. Since her parents had moved into the dining room, the eldest child was on her own. However, as she started to get the boy under control, she heard the terrifying gasping gulps of air. Without a second thought, the child dropped the ice, which skittered under a table, and stood while turning the boy in towards her body and resting him on her hip. The black haird girl bounced while twisting her torso back and forth. Amaya felt her brother’s head falling onto her shoulder as he stopped resisting so much. A chubby little arm snaked around her neck and then found its way into the toddler’s mouth. Some kids sucked on their thumbs, but no, Hirochi sucked on his entire hand. It was an odd habit and none of them were entirely sure where he got it, but it was there and they had had no success in breaking it. There were wet sniffles being slurped next to Amaya’s ear as the young boy stifled his tantrum. There was no more cold ice on his head and now he had the attention of his sister all to himself, so he was alright for now.

Silently, the female child scolded herself for not paying closer attention to her brother while she was trying to patch him up. Sure, Amaya knew that she was getting tired, but that was no excuse for her mental lapse. That was something that the eldest Keiji child knew she was going to have to work on; focusing as tired. The fact wasn’t upsetting to the girl, it was just a point of self criticism was all. Yukio had always appreciated that in his daughter; she didn’t get upset when corrected. With her over all positive outlook on life it was easy for her to brush such things off as for the better and to just keep in stride. Plus, if someone was correcting her it meant that they cared enough about her to make sure she was doing whatever it was correctly. It was a nice feeling knowing that one was loved. As she rocked and bounced, the girl started to hum too. Her gentle melody wasn’t so much for her brother as it was to express her happiness in that moment. Sure, it was helping the boy drift off to sleep all the faster, but its origin was completely selfish. The notes reverberated in her chest as she repeated the melody that her mother had repeated to her countless times over the past eight years. Naturally, it was Amaya’s favorite song and she knew it perfectly. Well, so long as she was humming it. Since she was so shy, the female Keiji child rarely sang aloud for others to hear.

Noting that her arms were tired from all the work that she had done that day at the Academy, Amaya took a seat on the edge of a couch so that her brother’s weight could be supported by her lap instead of being held by her arms. The toddler was finally drifting into sleep, which was noted by the constantly increasing weight that rested on the older sister’s legs and chest. There was also the arm draped around the girl’s neck that kept getting heavier, but it wasn’t so heavy as to restrict or make difficult her breathing. There was now a steady stream of drool running down the toddler’s arm and soaking into the back of his sister’s shirt. That was alright, it needed to be washed anyways. While she sat, Amaya continued humming and rocking in order to help keep her brother asleep and convince him to slip away entirely. If she managed that then it would be easy to ice the slowly growing bump on the back of the boy’s head and put him to bed without a struggle. Hiroshi and Mitsu were the two most aggressive ones of the little hoard and that made it difficult to put them down sometimes.

Finally, the black haired girl felt her brother go entirely limp in her arms. There was a gentle sigh of relief as the girl stood to retrieve the ice. However, when she looked under the table, there was simply a puddle. Amaya sighed slightly, but readjusted her brother higher on her hip and walked into the kitchen. Carefully maneuvering around, the girl collected some more ice and placed it in a rag. As she worked, the eldest Keiji child continued to bounce and sway for the sake of her brother’s slumber. It was sometimes difficult to do so while moving around in the kitchen, but she had grown used to it over the past couple of years and learned how to modify her movements to accommodate. The humming continued to vibrate in her chest as the girl bounced around the kitchen, prepping her supplies. If it wasn’t for the fact that she was dead set on becoming a shinobi, Amaya would have made an incredible house wife someday. It wouldn’t have made her happy, but she would be good at it.

Just as the girl was about to replace the ice on the back of her brother’s head, there was a sudden wail from the boy’s room in the back. Damn it, Mitsu! Without fail, Hiroshi snapped awake and followed suit, not to be outdone by his brother. The screaming left her ear ringing and hurt her head as she tried to calm the boy in her arms. However, that was going to be no easy task since her mother, as she had down with Amaya, wouldn’t go into the back room to sooth her crying toddler. Now, Sada knew that it was just a fit and that Mitsu would soothe himself eventually. That just meant that Amaya would have to tolerate the screaming and the thrashing until they both tuckered out again. Knowing that it was hopeless, the child replaced the ice along with the rag so that it wouldn’t melt all over the counter. Then, she grabbed a second rag so that she could go clean up the puddle in the other room while her brother threw his tantrum in her arms.

With screaming toddler in tow, Amaya made her way back to the living room along with the rag that she collected in order to clean up the liquid mess that she had made when Hiroshi started thrashing around and fighting his containment. It was difficult to hold onto the boy, but the child knew that if she put her brother on the floor he would move around enough to wake himself up for the rest of the night and that just wasn’t an option. So, she would expend his energy by restraining him in her arms and allowing him to cry himself back to sleep. Sure, it was a pain and it usually resulted in a massive headache, but that was what worked for the family and the Keiji girl wasn’t about to shift from her mother’s “tried and true” methods of child raising. After all, it had worked well enough on Amaya, so there was no reason as to why it wouldn’t be effective on her brothers.

Finally reaching the table that had the puddle beneath it, Amaya paused. She couldn’t very well kneel down and clean the mess with her brother on her hip. So, she was going to have to use the lazy and quick method that Sada used while cooking. Tossing the rag on the floor, the child used her foot to reach under the table and move the rag around to soak up the water. The near freezing water was a shocking sensation against the bare tips of her toes, but the task was completed quickly and Amaya was able to do so while keeping reign on her brother. Using her first and second toes to pinch the rag, the girl was able to toss the used cloth into the air and catch it so that she could clean it. As the girl made her way back to the kitchen, and consequentially farther away from Hiroshi’s room, the boy seemed to calm. It was suddenly clicking with him that he wasn’t being taken to bed, which he often fought when he had the energy to, and that he was going to remain in his sister’s company.

Placing the rag in the sink, Amaya felt her little brother settling against her chest and shoulders once again. The boy was tired, but he was fighting sleep to the very bitter end. Having come into the kitchen, it was obvious that the toddler was calming, so his sister decided it was best to remain in there instead of returning back to the living room. Using her foot to slide it across the floor, Amaya pulled a small wooden stool from the corner. It was the one that she often used when doing dishes and the like. Damn her shortness. Oh well, it was just another little obstacle to work by. Once she had it next to the counter, Amaya carefully clambered up onto the surface, using it as a seat. However, it was then that she realized that her little rag filled with ice was still in the freezer. With a gentle huff, she bounced back down and retrieved the small package before returning to her desired seat on the counter. Normally Sada wouldn’t allow her to sit on the counter, but Sada wasn’t in the room and Amaya was taking care of Hiroshi, so she knew she wouldn’t be scolded for such a thing; especially not on a day like today.

The child knew that her mother was exhausted from taking care of the house and the boys all at once, but she couldn’t help but wonder if there was something else too. Amaya had noticed the woman slowing over the past few weeks and it was concerning to her. Usually, Sada was full of energy and life, but now she was just as content to sit and rest as she had been to play with her children. It was out of character, but for all the female child knew it was just a cold that she was fighting. While that realization was always in the back of her mind, Amaya wasn’t going to let it worry her. After all, her mother had always done what was best in the past, so this should be no different. However, when the child was allowed to just sit and think, having a thrashing infant latched onto her hip was nothing new so it didn’t make any impact on her thought process anymore, it always came up. The changes were little, but for someone who had been in her mother’s presence for every day for the past eight years, and vice versa, every little shift in behavior was obvious and glaring.

As the girl allowed herself to drift about in her thoughts, she felt the toddler in her lap once more grow limp. He leaned heavily against her chest, relying on her for support, and she placed the frozen ice packet against the little bump on his head. The growth had stopped, so she was just working for reduce the swelling as best she could at this point in time. That wouldn’t be a difficult task, but it was bothersome when she was as tired as she was. However, not only did she have to finish this and put her brother to bed, but she probably had a chore or two to do before she could finally go to sleep. Normally that wouldn’t have been an issue, but she had worked long and hard in the Academy that day and it was taking quite the toll on the child. Amaya couldn’t remember the last time she was this tired. Then again, she didn’t have many memories from times before her brothers came along. That was always so odd, the child didn’t remember any of her infanthood, but that didn’t seem to be uncommon at all.

The young girl rocked back and forth as her brother’s breathing grew slow and heavy with slumber. It was far easier to attend to the needs of a sleeping infant rather than a raging cyclone. Once more the gentle rumbling vibrated through the eldest child’s chest as she picked up on the lullaby that she had been reciting earlier. Her melody was slow and gentle, swooping up and down the scale and swirling in gentle patterns that made the verses easy to complete. It was a lovely tune and in all actuality, Amaya missed the days when her mother would sing her to sleep. Then again, she was much smaller back then and she was the only child that her mother had to focus on. Sada’s daughter would be bundled up in her arms, already asleep, but Sada wouldn’t want to put the precious form down; so she would walk and rock and sway and sing until there was no doubt that the small girl was going to sleep through the night. They were the happiest of times, not that these times were any less joyful. No, now there was happiness and laughter that over flowed in the house above the Keiji forge. It was a blessed, brilliant place to be.

It wasn’t just Sada or Yukio who believed and thought such things. No, Amaya had taken close notes from her parents and had listened to their every word for the past eight years, though she hadn’t understood them all, and adopted the majority of the ideologies that her parents supported. That was how their daughter had grown to be so gentle and quiet; Amaya had been raised listening to idealistic views of society and its future. It had inspired her young heart, still open and accepting, to dream and pursue that immaculate future that could only be imagined. Those thoughts and ideas were the ones that led her to the doors of the Academy earlier that very day. They were the same ones that had her fixated on her studies and development. Her focus wasn’t all there since she had yet to perfect what she was seeking to accomplish, but Amya knew the direction that she wanted to head it. Just the morning she had explained it to her newest friend, Akeru, perfectly: “I can see on my own because I am my own light, even if others won’t see me that way. I will change the world in their shadows if I must.” Those words rang true in the girl’s heart, but they were slightly modified in her mind. Amaya knew that she wasn’t a front and center kind of person; she was the backstage helper. With that knowledge, she knew that her impact would rise from the shadows and that she would make the changes that she needed to in the background so that they could blend into the foreground without any sudden, startling changes.

Amaya knew her future, she understood her path, and now she was taking those first terrifying steps. However, whenever she was fearful or concerned, she simply thought of home; her father and mother, her brothers and the love that they all possessed for one another. With a gentle hand, the girl softly rubbed the rising and falling back of her sleeping brother. It was likely that Hiroshi would awaken once more before she was done, but until then she was going to enjoy the silence and the affection that they shared at that blissful moment; wrapped in nothing but themselves and letting the world fall away around them.

Amaya’s humming slowly but steady grew quieter and began to lose its rhythm. The notes slurred together and any semblance of a melody began to merge into a gentle, clumsy tangle of sound. With the toddler’s weight resting fully on her lap and her chest, the young girl folded into the mass. However, as she folded over, she also fell. Smoothly and swiftly the small girl slipped off the edge of the counter. Her eyes shot open as her shoulder collided with the hard wooden floor. Without taking the time to check herself, Amaya sat up with inhuman speed as she looked for her brother. Had she landed on him?! However, no matter how hard or how frantically she looked around her beloved Hiroshi was nowhere to be seen; not on the counter or on the floor. The sister’s breathing was heavy and fast as she tried to figure out where he was. Perhaps her parents had retrieved him when she dozed off. How could she be so careless?! She had placed herself on an elevated surface with a sleeping toddler, making her his only support, and then she had fallen asleep, neglecting the child in her care! There was no doubt in her mind that she would be severely scolded by both Sada and Yukio, but all that mattered at that moment was making sure the boy was alright.

Pressing her hands against the floor, the girl lifted herself with a slight wince as she discovered that she had caught herself with both her shoulder and her knee. It was painful, but that didn’t matter; plus, nothing was actually injured, it was just bothersome. Amaya walked briskly out of the kitchen, across the living room, and into the hall. Her brothers’ rooms were down at the end of the hall. All four of them had their own rooms because the upper level of the forage had originally been made for the much larger families of the past Keiji generations. Knowing every little creak and screech of that home, the black haired girl slowly, methodically made her way to the door and slid it open with a gentle hand. The door noiselessly slid along its track and disappeared into the wall. The room was fairly bare, but that was the case with all of the personal rooms of the Keiji household. With her bare feet gently padding against the cold floor Amaya walked closed enough to peer over the edge of her brother’s crib. Her jaw fell slack, the pallor of her skin drained away from her face in an instant, and Amaya’s shining black eyes grew in horror. A motionless form, not a single lift of the chest or the gentle whistle of air passing from the lungs back to the outside world, lay underneath a soft green blanket. Though terrified, the girl swiftly reached in and tore the suffocating cloth from the crib, letting it fly behind her and easily drift to the floor, landing silently.

In that same moment, Amaya’s body went numb as she felt her strength rushing from her body. There was nothing underneath the blanket aside from the perfectly smooth sheet that kept the rest of the bed guarded from her drooling baby brother. If he wasn’t there, then where was he and what had she seen earlier? Panic suddenly struck as Amaya’s legs sprang to life, racing to each of her brothers’ rooms to discover an identical scene in each subsequent room. Listlessly exiting Kaemon’s room, the young girl leaned against the wall and allowed herself to slide down so that she was sitting; a little ball curled up in a hollow, almost terrifying hall. Holding the edges of her jacket sleeves, the child wrapped her arms around the knees that were tucked to her chest as she tried to figure out what in the world had just happened. The entire house was deathly silent, nothing moved, not even the air. Amaya felt like what little oxygen was in her lungs was fighting to staying in her chest, like something from the outside was trying to rip it from her chest. There had to be some sort of explanation, but what could it be?

*This Takes Place In An Alternate Time Frame*

7 + 0 = 7 Failure

Frustrated with her lack of understanding as to what was happening, the child swiftly rose to standing and looked up and down the hallway. It was obvious that there was no one else there, so there was no use looking in the rooms any more. Amaya’s bare feet quietly padded back to the living room and swept her over to the door that led to the staircase. Almost nervously, the black haired girl’s trembling hands pulled her sandals on over her ankles as she tried to calm herself. No matter how much she tried to convince herself that it was nothing her mind spun out of control with panic. Her mouth was dry and she fruitlessly tried to wet her lips, but her tongue was just as dry and the air offered no moisture either. Then again, that was common in the house since it was located above a forge that had roaring fires running most hours of the day. However, even though her efforts to moisten her mouth had gone without success she was able to pull her sandals on; she was never allowed barefoot in the forge. Using both hands, the girl forced the “front door” open to reveal the blackened staircase that led down to her father’s business.

Not knowing where her family was terrified the girl. Her father, her mother, and all four of her toddler brothers had disappeared without a trace. What’s worse is that whatever happened had occurred while she soundly slept; clueless as to the events that transpired. Fighting off her terror, the female Keiji mentally scolded herself over and over as she reached for the candle that the family kept by the door. She soon had it lit with some difficulty thanks to her shaking hands. After taking in a deep breath, the girl lightly, cautiously stepped onto the first stair, convinced that the world was going to fall from beneath her feet as she carefully made her way step by step, the tender flesh of her palm pressed forcefully into the wall beside her for security. Much to her surprise, or it may have been disappointment, nothing rose up and swallowed the child and the ground didn’t fall out from her feet, dropping her into an unknown chasm. At least if that happened then she would have a legitimate reason from the terror that knotted in her throat and threw her stomach mercilessly against the walls of her abdomen.

The dirt floor of the forge soon came up beneath Amaya’s feet as she looked around the lightless room. Having grown up in that very room and having worked in it made it easy to navigate by only the light of that little candle in her hand. The girl’s free fingertips lightly drew across the covering to one of the fire pits, startled by the lack of heat. It hadn’t been long since her father had retired for the night; well, that was all dependent on just how long she had been asleep. Having drifted so far off that she fell from the counter may have been an indication that she had slept much harder and much longer than she originally guessed. If there was only a way to tell the time; but there was no indicators in the forge and Amaya was no good at telling the time by the moon. Then again, that was also under the assumption that the moon was out too. A cautious hand moved the curtain to the side of the opening as she exited the forge and entered the showroom. That same hand immediately shot up to shield her eyes from the incredible light that flooded the room. It was the pale blue of the moon encasing and swallowing every last bit of solidity that it touched. The girl blew out her candle and placed it on her front counter; there was no use carrying it around and wasting the wax and wick if there was this much light available.

Amaya saw a few boxes of weapons off to the side; she had yet to put away the new supplies that day. However, her chores weren’t her primary concern at the moment. No, she needed to figure out what in the world was happening. So, the child ducked under the counter in the corner where her father had removed the cabinetry to allow access from one side to another. He usually lifted the cabinet and walked through, but with Amaya being as short as she was it was no matter for her to walk under it. Once more her feet were met with wooden floors, but this time she couldn’t feel it. For some reason, that bothered the girl. She often ran around outside without her shoes. It was just the forge where she was required to wear shoes. Still not entirely sure why she was so compelled, the girl slipped both of her feet from their bonds and allowed them to take in the cool solidity of the floor beneath her. It was a strangely comforting feeling even though she silently wished for something to spirit her away like it had her family. Assuming that there was an “it” to blame for whatever was occurring there. However, there was nothing to blame because Amaya knew nothing about what was happening and that needed to change. Swiftly, the girl crossed the showroom floor and exited the store opening, making sure to step carefully over the quasi-traps that her father set to compensate for the lack of a door, and the warm spring night air struck her face with a welcoming embrace; as if it was where she needed to be right then.
