Ami winced as she walked down the hall. Things were still sore, muscles stiff from laying in a hospital bed all day. It didn't matter though. As long as she was functioning, there was only one thing she had to do.

Which is why she was knocking on the door of the notorious Dr. H's office. Really, she knew nothing about the man. She'd never talked to him, never interacted personally like this. Well, to be fair, she never had a reason.

Her hands trembled nervously in her pocket as she shuffled the pieces of Junpei. She knew what this would mean.

"Hello?" she said, as the hand that was knocking fell back down to her side. "Er ... Sir?."

"It's open," the doctor's voice called out absently. The doctor's office was normally considered to be more executive that medical, full of sleek, comfortable leather furniture with the warm gleam of metal and polished wood. Though the majority of the labs had been repaired, there was still a fairly significant hole in the ceiling. The doctor himself sat at his desk, sorting through paperwork, a thin pair of glasses perched on his nose.

There was also a dove perched on his desk. A green, reptilian woman lounged indolently upon his couch, the jewelry of jade and gold draped over her doing nothing to hide her nudity. She watched the dove with a lazy, patient hunger.

The doctor ignored both creatures and continued his work.

Ami opened the door, fully intent on simple apologizing and getting it over with when her eyes fell on the reptile. Her mouth went agape and her face covered with a bright crimson, completely embarrassed. Had she just walked in on something? Why would he have said it was open then...?

She quickly turn around, staring at the wall opposite the lady, but nervously looking back to also make eye contact with the Doctor. It did absolutely nothing to hide the embarrassment painted quite plainly across her face.

"I-I can come back later," she squeaked out, eyes flicking to H and then back down at the ground. "If you're busy."

"I'm always busy," the leader drawled, finally looking up at the intermediate to give her a sharp smile. "Fortunately I'm entirely capable of multi-tasking, provided you don't waste my time." There was the sound of scales rasping accompanied by the soft creak of leather and soft click of heavy jewelry swinging together. The creature on the couch had shifted her attention to Ami.

Ami nodded, staring directly at H and absolutely nowhere else in the room. Although Marie had simply shifted her attentions, Ami felt like the reptile woman's eyes were burning into the side of her head. At least H had a friendly smile. He'd done nothing to live up to the ... rumors so far, except for the reptilian lady on his couch. Perhaps it was some sort of study on the creatures? Ami wouldn't put it past the disgusting things to run around naked.

Not wanting to- as he said- waste any time, Ami took a few steps towards the desk and pulled out what little remained of Junpei's unsummoned form. Three small pieces of a hairclip, two of them bigger than the smaller third piece.

"In ... the prison, when we were escaping ... a horseman broke him," she said calmly. She'd rehearsed this a thousand times in her head, and refused to mess it up now. More quietly, she said, "I am ... prepared to accept the consequences."

Her mind rattled with the impending fear of the pods, but her expression remained placid. She would do this with dignity.

Setting aside his pen, the doctor stared at the pieces, "Well, you're going to be slightly more useless than usual, now aren't you?" He didn't sound particularly angry or chiding but rather resigned to the fact that yes, he does tend to get the least useful trainees and sadly he can't trade her for a different one just yet.

Marie helpfully added, her voice low and rasping, "Remove her heart, Priest. Red hands dripping with bright...glistening...red...it's been so long...do it in the sun's so that we may wallow in the warmth of her life."

The doctor smiled fondly at his weapon, and then turned back to Ami, "You will, of course, still be expected to participate in various missions, despite your weakened state." He paused and steepled his fingers to study her for several long moments. "I suppose as a kind and caring division leader, I'll allow you to check out one of the major runics we have available. They aren't quite up to par with a true weapon of course, but they should keep you hm...adequate, until your weapon has healed."

"Yes sir," she responded quietly, eyes on the floor. Useless. Hadn't Otto said if she gave up, they'd throw her in the pods? So, then it was time for her reckoning then?

Marie's words sent shivers down her spine. It may have sounded surprising, but Ami liked her heart in her chest thank you very much. Part of her wondered if it would be easier than the pods though. Suspended in a dormant state, or taken out of commission forever.

The doctor's response astounded her. He talked quickly, and Ami thanked her lucky stars that the gears in her heard clicked soundly. Still participate? That meant living. Major runics? A means of defense.

But what about Junpei?

Her composure was calm, unmoved as she said, "Healed, sir?" Ami's eyes flicked to the pieces she'd set on the desk, almost as if to make sure they were broken- indeed, they still were. Nobody had told her anything about weapons being able to ... heal.

"I wasn't aware that I had stuttered, trainee," the doctor drawled, sitting back to look as her with appraising eyes. "Your weapon is a living creature, it grows, it learns, and while it can be harmed as such, it can also be healed." Picking up his pen, he returned his attention to the paperwork, "It merely takes time, provided you refrain from straining it, of course. Being a mediocre partner to it will also slow things down, so do try not to be too subpar despite the lack of weapon, hm?"

Marie snorted indelicately in the back ground, but went back to lounging and staring at Ami with unblinking eyes. The dove was also staring at her. Possibly in some sort of bizarre bird judgement.

This was entirely unexpected. Not how she expected the doctor to react, not how she expected this conversation to go, and she definitely didn't expect EVERYONE TO BE STARING AT HER THE ENTIRE TIME.

The news was exciting though. Junpei would live. She would live. Living. Life.

Not being subpar was going to be hard though. Ami was already physically weak- she really believed that the only reason she was alive so far was because she'd gotten so much time to practice technique with Junpei. Now she'd have to start over with a completely new weapon. Sure they could give her a runic spear, but it would have a different weight, a different feel. She was starting from scratch.

A start was a start though. She said, "I see," shortly, mind calculating. "Do I get a choice in the major runic? I don't expect to, but the chances rise if I ask." She'd gained a bit more confidence whilst talking, especially now knowing that it wasn't all over.

The doctor looked up at her, lips curling, "You do get a certain amount of choice. The majority of major runic weapons are similar to those you get licensed for by proving yourself capable in the carious training courses, only more durable and granting you slightly better offensive and defensive abilities than you have now, without your weapon's assistance." Openign a drawer he pulled out a scrap of paper, scrawled several instructions down before folding it and sealing the missive with a rune bearing the life symbol. He held it up to the trainee, smile widening, "Do understand that I by no means have to do this, my dear. Major runic weapons are rather costly, and I'm sure you're more than aware that Deus is something of a tough love organization."

Sometimes H smiled with what seemed like more teeth than any human had right to have.

This was one of them.

Ami took the note he handed her, understanding the tonality of H's voice. That smile would probably haunt her forever.

"I understand sir," she said, quietly looking at the order. Guns? Ami knew literally zero about guns. Her first reaction was the refuse and request for something more suitable. A polearm, a baseball bat- she'd take a stick over guns.

That smile told her she had no choice in the matter. Especially since he emphasized he didn't have to do this.

She folded the paper and put it in her hunter's jacket. At least he didn't specify what kind? So she got to choose within that realm. Kat had guns- Kat could help. Ami moved forward to pick up the pieces of hairclip she'd left, and quickly retracted her hand moments later, stuffing them into her pocket. She moved back so quickly it was like Ami was afraid the Doctor was going to bite her. "Also ... sir?" she asked. "Is there a way I could be switched to insanity studies?" She looked down, ready to back out the door at any second. She knew she was asking way too much.

Steepling his fingers, the doctor stared across the desk, "Do you have anything specific in mind? The subject has become rather...broad as of late."

"The abandoned town," Ami responded promptly. She'd been thinking about it for a while, but never really had the courage to approach the Doctor or Clarice. Heck, to be honest, she didn't even know her division leaders on a first name basis until now. She still didn't know Clarice's beyond "that one girl who got her neck snapped at Orientation."

Ami clasped her hands together behind her back and said, "The way I see it ... I can't make too many trips to Halloween for," her eyes flicked to Marie, and then back to the division leader, "Obvious reasons. So it would be best to stay closest to home."

She squeezed her hands together, nervous that her tenacity would strike the Doctor as cockiness. Was this too bold for someone who was recently in intensive care? "Perhaps with time I could visit the other world, but for now ... the town?"

Settling back into his chair the doctor nodded, "Golem visits will be possible, but going to Halloweentown is very much off the table for you. The town still does get hmm...activity, Insanity wise. You may, however, wish to bring additional protection in the town area," his lips curled ruefully, "...there's a um...dragon, you know."

Ami blinked in surprise at the mention of a dragon in the middle of Deus Ex. She'd been knocked out after the attack, tortured, and then drugged for for almost a week straight in the hospital- it didn't leave a lot of time to find out the latest happenings at Deus.

She cocked an eyebrow and opened her mouth to make a comment asking why the hell there was a dragon on the loose, but then realized it would be imprudent. Dr. H was the division leader- not her. Ami took orders and didn't question them. If there was a dragon, she suspected it was still around for a reason.

"Then with protection," she agreed. All things considered, she really didn't dislike Dr. H. The rumors had built him up to be a creep that made people uncomfortable, but so for the most part, Ami liked what she'd conversed with. Sure that smile had been incredibly unsettling, but Ami was actually enjoying conversation without someone making an immature joke like "that's what she said." It was a nice change, that was all.

Ami gave a sort of awkward half bow and said, "Ah- Thank you sir." A polite gratefulness never hurt.

With that done and established, Ami turning to leave. An immense burden had been lifted from her, but at the same time a new pressure was added. Do her best. Don't be useless.
