Finding a horseman to talk to was tougher than she thought it would be; she had been sitting on the branch of a tree located near the entrance of their camp, but there were very few who actually wandered out... And among those, most of them looked rather intimidating to her. Of course, it did not help that she didn't really trust them as a whole. The only reason why she wanted to speak to one personally, was because one of the DETH scout activities happened to be an activity that required the assistance of a horseman.

It wasn't going to be easy though, knowing the type of people the Horsemen were... Maybe that's why she had been so selective about who she was willing to approach; she wanted to hold a conversation with someone who looked like they would be willing to listen to her talk about the "DETH ideals"... As Deryk told her, horsemen were violent.

She did not want a fight.

So, for now, Lizzy continued sitting on that branch, her DETH scout guidebook clutched tightly in one hand as she waited for "the right one".

Jay didn’t even know what DETH was. Wasn’t that some division those stupid hunters had? The one with pretty scythes (except for the hunter with glasses, his actual scythe was stupid)?

To Lizzy, Jay probably appeared to be a decent horseman candidate to approach. For one thing, the warrior was diminutive with her 5’2” frame. Despite the flecks of red war paint and colorful wings that gave her away as War, her expression was not harsh. It was childish, with wide eyes and thin lips placed on a soft, tanned face.

She flicked away a couple grains of sands she had accumulated after her time in the lair. Lips twisted into a tiny frown as she shook her wings and felt even more sand fall out. Sighing, Jay made her way toward a tree and plopped down beneath its leafy branches. Once she finished picking out the sand, she idly loosened her bandages until they tumbled into a pile on her lap. She hummed. “My friends have lost their way~ We’ll be over soon they said, now they’ve lost themselves instead~”

If Lizzy didn't need to breathe, she would have held her breathe the moment the horseman - well, horsewoman - sat under the tree she was currently occupying. However, since it was impossible for her to hold her breath for that long a time, she settled for trying to be silent, contented to just watch the other ghoul from where she was currently perched; maybe this was "the one" that she had been looking for?

"Um, e-excuse me," She finally decided to ask, her smile rather sheepish as she managed a wave, "I didn't mean to eavesdrop, but... I was wondering if what you just said mean anything?"

She heard a nervous voice above her. Unlike her War brethren, Jay didn’t move to summon her weapon and toss the dagger into the trees to take down her possible assailant. The very opposite happened. “Hm?” She craned her neck back and spotted a flash of pink. Lips parted slightly as she gave the student a childlike stare of wonder. “Oh!”

The warrior hastily picked up her bandages and messily reapplied them again. “Not particularly. It’s just a song from the human world. I heard some humans sing it one time.” Jay smiled sweetly. “Then I killed them.” The answer really shouldn’t have been surprising to Lizzy.

"Y-You killed..." It might not be a surprise, since she knew that the horsemen had different morals, but it did not stop her from feeling... Well, a little sick. Even if it wasn't a human that was killed, the idea of ending anyone's life - or unlife - did not sit well with her. In fact, it made her pretty uncomfortable.

Still, she found the need to be polite.

"Uh, so..." She begun, sounding slightly hesitant, "Why do horsemen find the need to kill humans?"

“Yeah, I killed,” Jay confirmed, innocently cocking her head at the pink-haired student. She looked at Lizzy curiously, as if to ask if something was wrong.

Either the bluejay didn’t catch the slight hesitation or she ignored it altogether. “Hmmmm.” She took out a few materials—flowers, leaves, long blades of grass, and other assortments. Thin fingers began to fiddle with the supplies spread across her lap. “It’s what we do,” she answered after a moment. “It’s custom to kill. It’s how we gather our fear. It strikes terror into their hearts. It’s very fun, you know.” Jay smiled.

"So... Killing is like... Tradition?" Lizzy asked, intrigued; since she had decided to stay back in school during the exchange program, it was the first time that she had personally heard this piece of information from a horseman... Although it was not news to her. The fact that the horsemen prefer to kill, rather than simply scare, for Fear was something that they did not bother to keep secret; it goes against Halloween's policy on gathering Fear.

"But after a human dies, it can't generate Fear anymore... Isn't that a pity?" She asked, careful about how she phrased her thoughts in order to not upset her, "Oh! Uh, by the way, my name is Lizzy." She offered the ghoul a sheepish smile.

Jay hummed and clasped her hands together at the word. “Yes! I suppose you could call it tradition! It’s what we always do, after all. I don’t know if we’ve never never killed becausewearequiteoldyouknowbutthatisdefinitelyyaquestionIwouldliketoknowtheanswertosomedaymaybe I’ll ask Medea about it!” It was always a wonder how the bird managed to spit out so many words together so quickly and without breath.

“Not really,” she said with the shake of her head. She picked up a few blades of grass and tied them into a circle. “They make a lot of Fear before they do, and that’s why you should kill in groups! Do it slowly and with them watching so they can get scared even more.” She nodded her head matter-of-factly.

Lizzy actually took a few seconds to digest the string of words, and to make meaning of it. Since she didn't have much to say about that, she just slowly nodded; it would probably be easier for a horseman to approach Medea about these things, as opposed to a student like her.

All the talk of killing was making her lose her appetite.

"What if," She decided to go about this as diplomatic as possible, trying to make it sound casual, "Instead of killing humans, why not scare them for Fear instead? Ummm, it's like... If you have a fruit tree that grows prickly pears. If you pick some fruits from one tree, and then leave to pick some fruits from another tree, you might have less prickly pears, but you'll have enough fruit left on the trees to last you your whole life. If you decide to chop down a tree and kill it, you get all of its fruits at once, but it will never be able to give you fruit again. Ever. And it will never produce seeds that will make even more prickly pear trees for more fruit in the future either. Your scarelings will never taste prickly pears!"

She paused, "That way, everyone wins... Um, I know it's tradition, but do you have your own view on it? What do you think? Would it be better for Fear to last forever, than to deplete it in one go?"

Lizzy’s opening question caused Jay to curl her lips into a frown. Scare them for Fear? The horseman scared the humans—how else did they get Fear otherwise? Despite her initial confusion, she allowed the student to continue speaking rather than interrupt the explanation like she usually did. The war horseman busied herself with the items in her lap instead. She continued to twist the dried blades of grass into the framework for a necklace before she tied on a few flowers onto the center. Jay held her miniature project at an arms –length to gauge her progress before she held it close to herself again. All the while, she continued to silently listen to Lizzy.

It took the bluejay a moment to realize the entire thing was a metaphor. “Oh! I see! Hm. Hmmmm.” She cocked her head and idly stretched out her striped wings. “Of course it is always good for Fear to last forever, but I think our way is good too. It’s lasted us for many many many years and I think it will last for many more.” Jay smiled. “There are lots of humans for us to kill and after…” She paused, her lips twisting into a sneer for a second. “That the humans will last even longer. Because we are so few now.”

“I trust Medea. Medea has not lied to us. She has given what she promised us.”

"... Ah, yes, that," Lizzy muttered, her gaze dropping to the ground, "I wasn't there personally, but a lot of my friends were..." She lapsed into silence, gaze still focused on that one spot on the ground; she didn't know what else to say, so she settled for a minute of silence; it was not only for enjoying the sound of crisp, dried leaves being rustled by the gentle breeze, but also for all the Fear cores that perished that day.

"The Fear from humans do not belong to the Horsemen alone though," She continued, her voice soft and gentle as she tucked her little guidebook away. Hopping down from the tree branch, she wobbled on the spot for a moment before regaining her balance by extending out her arms, "It belongs to everyone who needs it to survive. This land is made form Fear too, so we'll need all the humans we can, to generate it for as long as they can..."

She turned to smile at Jay, "I see..." She could see that there was no persuading the horsewomen, at least not in this short time, the same way she could not accept The Lost Clan's view on "Fear Harvesting"... It was just too cruel, and unnecessary to her.

"That was a nice talk! I think... I can understand your people a little more now," She nodded, pausing before hesitantly opening up her arms. She probably looked a little awkward, standing there with her arms open, and a sheepish smile on her face, but she didn't care... Not really. There wasn't anyone around anyway, and making friends is more important, "I heard that hugs are accepted everywhere... Uh, do horsemen do hugs too?"

She remained silent, keeping her fingers busy by continuously fiddling with the plants and rocks scattered in her lap. It pained Jay to admit there was some sense to Lizzy’s argument, but Halloween didn’t matter to her as much as the other horsemen did to Jay. Her eyes wandered to the side, toward where she thought Lizzy to be. The horsemen were better. Halloween was nothing. Halloween was weak. Lips pressed together to lock the words inside. It wasn’t nice to hurt a child’s feelings.

Jay tilted her head to the side as she tied on a bundle of flowers onto the thin wreath she had made. “It was a nice talk, yes. If you understand us a bit better then that is good,” she chirped, looking up at Lizzy with a tiny smile. She threw the student a curious look when she spread out her arms, but her face immediately lit up once she realized Lizzy’s intentions. Jay carefully set aside her things and scrambled to her feet. “Hugs! I like hugs because hugs are very nice and I want togivealotofhugsbutpeopledon’tlikeitsometimessoIdon’tdoit oh well I don’t know about all horsemen, but I like hugs!” Beaming, she opened her arms and rushed over to wrap Lizzy in a tight hug.
