It had come to Feronell's attention that he didn't know all of the candidates, especially with new ones coming in everyday, and he decided that something needed to be done about that. what exactly, took a bit of thought, but the boy eventually decided that a picnic might be nice.
It didn't take much effort to scavenge food for it, in fact, he had only barely asked when he found himself provided with a pair of baskets filled with picnicing food. He had given his thanks, and then carried both of the heavy baskets out carefully.
Of course, he hadn't really thought about how he would let them know, and he made a detour to the barracks, knowing that a majority of candidates would still be around, since this was one of the rare times that they had a bit of free time. He snagged a couple of the clean blankets, and then pulled out his loudest voice. "Oy, guys!" He was pretty loud, his voice used to having to shout across the ship in bad weather. "Picnic on the Beach! Food, fun, and maybe even a sandhold building contest! Tell everybody!!"
There. He left the barracks, trusting that that would be good enough to get people to show up.
Once he reached the beach, he set up an area a bit aways from the water. He laid out the blankets on the sand, but left the baskets closed. That would do. Now he just needed people to show up.

Kindra had heard about the picnic and she'd debated privately, wondering whether to bother with such niceties but she was still fairly new to the Weyr and it's protocols so, after getting changed into something cool but very elegant, she took her own blanket and made her way towards the beach.
When she arrived she noticed only one boy there, he'd set up some blankets further from the water, that was good, he was at least smart enough to be wary of the tide. Well... most of them here did, even she did, her father often taking her out on his private boat. She gave the boy a smile and a little wave before placing her own blanket down, a little way from the others, seperating herself from the others that might arrive.

He had been more concerned with whether or not people would show up than he would have liked to admit, and when the girl showed it, he couldn't help but be relieved. She was a little farther away than he would have liked, but that was alright. At least she was here, and who knew, maybe she'd move closer later. When she waved at him, he decided that he should make the first move, and he walked over to where she had set up her own blanket.
"Glad to see you," he said, in way of greeting. "I figure we'll eat once more people arrive, and go from there. The plan's just to play it by ear, and have fun." He grinned. "Oh, right." How could he forget to introduce himself. That was the whole point, to get to know each other. "The name's Feronell."

She knew he'd come over, she was the only there besides himself so he'd be pretty rude if he didn't. She smiled again but didn't move from the middle of her blanket, there being enough room if he wanted to sit with her. She extended a hand to him "Kindra, pleased to meet you" she said, gently staring at him with her soft smile.

"The pleasure is mine." He took her hand, and laid a quick kiss across her knuckles, and then released it. ""Have you been at the weyr long?" He didn't think so, but one never knew. It was possible that he had just missed seeing her around.
He hadn't really payed that much attention to the other candidates, something that he was using this occasion to fix, and so, that wouldn't really surprise him.

Kindra withdrew her hand slowly, wel this boy knew what an offered hand meant to a lady, she fluttered her eyelashes just a little and blushed "Not long no" she smiled "i've only been here a few sevendays" she said, feigning a little shyness.
She was curious about this boy, he was polite and well mannered, unlike many of the weyrbred brats she'd come across... she did not like many of the girls but had smiled and nodded when they talked about their silly little girl things. She'd spent too much time in her mother's place running the hold to be into childish girly fancies anymore, unless it was boys.

Lathis' eyes flicked up as she heard a loud voice calling out about a picnic. Did she really want to go? She glanced down at the braided cord in her hands. Perhaps she would take something down to work on and then she could watch the candidates doing whatever. The worst possibility could be she'd become bored; in that case, she could always leave.
She stood up and changed into her swimming suit. The water would be cool after some time on the hot beach sands. Lathis carefully pulled her hair back over the scars on her face. She didn't feel like having the other candidates staring. With something to sit on and a small square of cloth wrapped around her hips the teen headed for the beach.
When she arrived she was surprised to find only a couple others there. Either the beach wasn't popular, or everyone else was just slow. She eyed the two, a boy and girl, before looking around. Lathis noticed the picnic baskets, unopened, and a couple of towels already laid out. How thoughtful. She was glad she'd brought her own as those could get crowded if lots of candidates showed up. With a quick decision she laid out her towel not too far from those brought, but on the opposite side of which Kindra had picked. All the better to watch and hear everyone.

Ah, so she was a relative newcomer then, though the fact that she had already been here a few sevendays was a little upseting. He really had to pay more attention.
A second girl had joined them, and he glanced over at where she was settling down. Really? He smiled and shook his head softly, and then looked back at Kindra.
"If you'll excuse me for a moment," he hated to interupt their conversation, he had hardly had a chance to converse at all, but he couldn't ignore the newcomer. "There seems to be someone I need to greet."
He grinned at Kindra, and then made his way over to Lathis. "Hey," he said, greeting her. "I'm Feronell, and I'm glad you joined us out here. I figure once a few more people show up, we'll break into the picnic baskets and see just what the kitchen staff provided for us."

Lathis had just settled down and gotten her cords arranged to her liking for braiding when the boy surprisingly came over. She looked up at him, half through her hair. Quietly she studied him a moment.
"Hello. Lathis," she greeted and gave her name. "Don't mind me. It was a nice day for sitting on the beach. Once I get too warm I'll go swim." It had been nice of him to come over and greet her. Lathis doubted he wanted to actually stay and talk. Not with that other girl here. Still, as the host of the party he was doing his job. She glanced at the baskets and nodded. "I'm sure it'll be good."

Kindra was annoyed that Feronell moved to the new girl, she was annoyed at the new girl for showing up and taking the boy's attention away from her but she schooled her emotion from her face almost as soon as it flashed on her features. She caught the girl's name and sat up a little, rearranging her light skirt and curling her legs round under her a little. "Kindra!" she called over, her voice loud enough to carry but by no means a shout, "hello" she said to the new girl, trying to be polite but she wasn't pleased to have a rival for Feronell's attention.

Finbar had also been feeling like he needed to get to know the other candidates better. He'd been a candidate for a good while, so he'd seen Feronell around, but he couldn't say he knew him very well. He was ashamed to admit it, but he'd spent most of his first few sevendays in the Weyr hanging out with his old friend Neri instead of meeting new people.
That being said, Finbar was sitting on his bed, alone, untangling some ropes he'd been given to work on when Feronell came into the barracks. Finbar went to listen at the door while Feronell shouted about picnics and sandholds. Well that sounded fun! And where there was sand, there was most often water too. Finbar went back to his room to finish his work. But as soon as he was done, he put his things away and headed out towards the shore.
He was relieved to see a small gathering of candidates there already. He didn't trust in his abilities to keep up a conversation on his own, but he was happy to sit and listen. He came over and sat on the sand, leaving the blankets open for others. "Finbar." he said, adding to the list of names already given. "Hi." He smiled brightly in greeting, but preferred not to say any more.

He grinned. "I bet it will be." Or at least he was hoping so.
She seemed to be more of a solitary creature, having brought something to do, but there was a part of him that found her far more interesting than Kindra. Not that he would tell Kindra that. "Well, if you're sure," he said, with a slight smile. "but let me know when you decide to swim, that water's been calling my name since I got here."
He had just taken a couple of steps back towards Kindra when one of the boys showed up, and he waved happily. Finbar, he knew, though not well, but enough that the other boy's face was a familiar site, and one that he was really pleased to see at the moment.
He took a seat in-between Finbar and Kendra, close enough to talk to both of them. "Finbar! Glad you decided to come out! Have you met Kindra or Lathis yet?" He pointed to each of them as he said their names, unsure if he knew either of them already.

Kindra noticed someone new arrive but didn't bother to get up, just gave him a wave and a smile, she'd been about to introduce herself when Feronell spoke to the newcomer, who'd said his name was Finbar. The smile was a nice one, friendly but sat where she was, seperate, well it implied she wasn't wanting to interact much, despite her intentions being the opposite. She eyed the water with slight distaste, she'd swum when she was younger (not by much) but not since her mother had gotten sick, and certainly not in a bunch of new people she barely knew, that and the reputation of Weyr folk wasn't always .... a good one when it came to being dressed for swimming. No.. Kindra would stay nice and dry thankyouverymuch.

"If we all come for a good time, it will be." She reassured Feronell quietly. It must have taken him a good bit of courage to throw his party on his own. Not knowing if anyone would bother to show up. Perhaps that was really why she'd come. Maybe.
The teen tilted her head slightly. He made her want to smile. "If you really get lonely, you can join me. Sure." Somehow she didn't think he'd lack for company this time. With the request to swim, she nodded. He didn't seem like he was afraid of the water, but just wanted some company there. It might be nice.
It wasn't long before another joined the tiny group. Lathis gave him a quick glance over. Her hands working on the braid on their own. Thankfully she didn't have to introduce herself. Feronell did. She gave a small wave of her free hand as her name was said. Her eyes took in the aloofness of the other girl. Lathis wasn't sure at this point if she was shy, or simply stuck up. From the way she'd set her blanket down though she was guessing the latter.

Verra had made it a point to keep to herself in the candidate barracks, having only been there a scant day or two since the Gather and she was still rather nervous about whether her gamble would pay off or not. After all she had just given up a life of prestige for the basic chores of a candidate, her life before of course had been very hard work too, but there was a scant bit more pride to be taken in helping to run a Hold then there was scrubbing floors. Still she was adapting well enough and most of the weyrbrats didn't pay enough attention to Ista Hold enough to even know whom the young woman who now walked among them was.
Therefore when a boy called for a picnic on the beach she decided to surprise herself, and them, and actually perhaps attend. Her more formal attire had been switched out upon her coming to the weyr for clean, sturdy, but nice clothes and she now wore a pair of rich brown pants and a white tunic trimmed with orange. Verra even at the Weyr was prone to always wearing Ista colors. Approaching the small group she gave the boy who had called for such a meeting a nod of greeting and respect, taking a moment to sweep her eyes over the rest of the group to see all who was there.
