Who: Vreni Hirsch (Minsuil) and Daniel Sonnen (Gekokoko)
Where: Teufel Town High School, History class (ancient history...?)
When: Second week of school
Why: Dan as always is doing poorly in class no matter how hard he tries...
PostPosted: Fri Aug 17, 2012 7:46 am

Daniel stared at the teacher blankly, his pen motionless in his hand. They were only into the second week of school, but...he didn't understand anything that was going on. He had definitely reached an all-time low with this. It didn't help that he was in history class, possibly his worst class other than math. Or were the sciences his worst class? Either way school was not an easy task for him. If only there was a way he could just play sports all day. That's what he was good at. The only hundreds he had ever gotten were in all his gym classes (whether or not that was something to be proud about was to be debated, but we digress).

He stared down at his notes, or what were supposed to be his notes, but he had only managed to write down his name, the date and the topic that the class was discussing today. It really didn't help that the teacher didn't have notes to show because 'they were getting ready for college'. Daniel sighed quietly, and tried his hardest to pay attention to the teacher again. He didn't have a boring voice (like many of the other history teachers in the school), but what about the pyramids...? They were in Egypt; he knew that much. Okay, he should write these down before he forgot about them later:

Pyramids - triangle shaped
Made by the farrohs (kings of Egypt)
Really old. Egypt is a dessert land

Hmm...that didn't look right. How do you spell 'pharaoh' anyways? 'Desert' didn't look right either. He'd have to ask his sister when he got home tonight.

"Oh, and class.", the teacher looked up from his lecture notes, "Keep in mind that we're also going to have a quiz on this next week."

Daniel stared at the teacher in disbelief, he wasn't serious was he?

Vreni checked the room number. She walked back to the table. Her fingers thrummed against the smooth surface in annoyance. She stood up, walked to the door and stared at the number. She looked back at the note in her hand. The paper was almost crumpled now but there it was, plain and clear, Library Study Room 2B. The same room she was in now. She looked at the clock mounted on the wall inside the study room. 3:54, she hadn't made a mistake.

Tuefel High School had an extensive library, but this was her first time in one of the study rooms. The library had twelve such rooms, all sound-proofed and spiffy looking with solid wooden tables and sleek chairs. They were in high demand, and usually had to be reserved in advance. That she was here now was because her history teacher had booked the room for her. Well, her and another individual. Daniel Sonnen. Captain of the Lacrosse team, jock extraordinary and currently late. Very late. Almost thirty-minutes late in fact. Her teacher had asked a favor of her and she had said yes. After all, the task hadn't sounded hard. Just tutor someone as much as needed so they could stay on the school team. Simple! Easy! And yet Vreni was certain her temper was wearing thin. In fact, if she weren't sure it was impossible, she would have said that the veins in her temple were throbbing.

In the distance she heard the sound of rushed footsteps. It sounded like someone was running through the library. What idiot ran in the library?

Woops.

Daniel was running very, very late. Quite literally, as he jogged through the halls and into the library his half-open backpack slung over one shoulder (he had lost some of his math notes - woops), and a small flowery paper bag clenched in one hand. His teacher had scheduled some history tutoring for him since he really did need the help, and told him not to be late. But, Dan, of course, was late. Thirty minutes and counting. He thought that maybe running to Cafe di Magia and getting some pastries as a small thank you gift would be a good idea, but the cafe was packed and as always Dan was the unfortunate center of attention because really, what boy would go into a pink bakery?

What was the room number? 2A? 2B? He quickly opened 2A's room and quickly shut it again as there was a (surprised) group of people in there working on some kind of powerpoint presentation. That was definitely not his study group then. 2B it is. He stopped in front of 2B, opening the door slowly and peeking through. There was a girl, who looked very, very unhappy (most likely his fault, since he was thirty minutes late), and he put on his best apologetic smile.

"Hey...you're Vreni Hirsch, right?" he said, shutting the door behind him, "Sorry I'm so late...I, uh was getting you some pastries from Cafe di Magia since, really you're tutoring me and all and I'm really thankful." he held out the crumpled bag of sweets, hoping to someone up in the clouds that only the bag was crumpled, not the bread inside. "I'm Dan by the way." he continued, hoping that she wasn't too angry at him. "It's nice to meet you."

Vreni stared at the offending package, she raised her gaze to the offending person. Though she still felt a bit disgruntled, there was a part of her that (uncharacteristically) wanted to forgive the blond boy. Perhaps it had something to do with the baked goods in his hands. Maybe it had something to do with that really cute smile--

"I'm Vreni Hirsch. Mr. Schmidt asked me to help tutor you in history."

She wasn't so sure what to do next. Vreni was well aware that keeping grudges, especially petty ones, wasn't right. Yet there was a part of her that didn't want to forgive Daniel. Time was precious! Wasting time was bad! But Daniel had gone so far to buy something for her. And Vreni was terribly fond of baked goods… Well it was a one time thing right? She sat down at the table and motioned for Daniel to sit down too.

"Well," she said with a sigh, "let's get started then. I suppose we should start with your notes from today's class."

Dan set the little bag down at the table, sitting across from her. Picking up his bag, he dug through the (quite disorganized) contents, "U-uh my notebook should be in here somewhere..." he said, glancing at the little bag, maybe she'd take it at the end.

"Ah!" he pulled out a blue spiral notebook, already showing wear and tear at the edges even though it was barely two weeks into school, "Here we go.", he grabbed a pen from one of the smaller pockets of his bag (thankfully those were easy to find), and placed the notebook on the desk flipping through the pages. There weren't that many notes, and upon another glance at the pages, the color rose in the boy's neck, realizing just how terrible his note taking skills were.

"Uh...." he glanced at Vreni, hoping that she wouldn't be annoyed about this too, "Yeah...these are my notes from today...um." Dan bit his lip, tapping his pen lightly on the table, staring at his messy scrawl:

Vreni looked at the notebook. She wasn't exactly sure what to think. Though she couldn't make out all of the words, the girl could still tell not much had been written. Six lines. How was it possible to walk out of a lecture with six lines of notes? She squinted her eyes, trying to make out the third line.

Made by Kung-Fu Chops and slaves
Made by Kung-Fu Chops and slaves
Made by Kung-Fu Chops and slaves

"These notes are," Vreni said as she flipped the page just to make sure there wasn't anything she was missing, "uh, kind of sparse." Also probably inaccurate, but bringing that up right now would probably be mean.

She was starting to understand why Daniel was failing History already. Vreni reached into her backpack and pulled out her notebook. Clearly printed across the front were the words "WORLD HISTORY". She flipped to her section on the Old Kingdom. Vreni's handwriting was neat and simple, though a little on the small side. Her notes were short and concise and comprised mostly of bullet points.

"I'll read you the main points from today's lecture and then we can work on…other things…"

"Yeah...", he said, knowing that any kind of excuse he made up would do no good at all. "I don't really know why I have such a hard time in class. But I'm always trying." Dan smiled at Vreni, hoping that was enough. Dan peered over at her notes, his mouth dropping slightly, geez she had a lot written down. If only he was able to do the same...and keep it neat too.

"W-wow.", he stared at Vreni, very impressed. "I guess there's a reason why Schmidt asked you to tutor me!", Dan leaned back in his chair, giving her a thumbs-up. "How do you keep it so organized though? Do you happen to know what the teacher is going to say so its just organized from the beginning?" he glanced at his notes again, and then looked at Vreni's. Wow, he was pretty jealous of her he wasn't going to lie. If he had the way she wrote notes and her grades, making sure he stayed on the team wouldn't be such a hard task for him.

"It's just a matter of listening to what the teacher says and writing down the important points. If you try to write down everything he says then you won't be able to keep up. Just listen for the key points and write those down."

She tried not to glare at the boy. Dan was the sweetheart of many a teacher and the school, and Vreni could understand why. Earnest and cheery, he was the kind of person that people liked to be around. Still, she didn't like the insinuation that she had an advantage. She didn't have an advantage. She worked hard. That was all there was to it, no kissing up to teachers, no secrets, just hard work. Scowling, Vreni set down the notes that she had been reading from and stared Dan straight in the eyes.

"I don't know what the teacher is going to say, but I do read the chapter. The textbook isn't just there to sit on your desk. You only get out of the class what you put in. If you can't get much out of the lecture, then maybe you should take notes from the chapter beforehand and then add in anything that Mr. Schmidt highlights during class lectures. That's what I do."

Dan nodded, listening to Vreni as attentively as possible, "That makes sense I suppose. But how do you know which are the key points and which aren't?" he asked, opening his notebook to a blank page, and writing down the information she was reading to him, "Everything he says sounds important..." he scratched at his head with the end of his pen, trying to remember what Mr. Schmidt was talking about today, but he only remembered some person named Kung-Fu Chops building the pyramids...

"Yeah...the textbook is pretty important." he agreed, though he didn't bother to mention that his history textbook was currently being used to prop up his shelf at home. "Wow, that sounds pretty smart to do." he said, looking impressed, "I guess I'll have to start doing that now when I get home today.", he grinned at Vreni, hoping that she would smile back. It was kind of unsettling that she didn't look as happy....

"Oh are you going to eat the pastry?", he asked, "Gloria says it tastes best when they're warm."
