Whisteria had been planning this since she first mentioned it to Xun. She had even gone so far as to find rings, because that was how humans did this or so she was told. Night Elves did not do things this way, but no Night Elf had ever been caught in the situation she was before. Usually one would have centuries to court their prospective mate. She sighed and lay back on the couch to stare at the ceiling. Hopefully he would be home soon, before she chickened out on doing this. One hand held the pair of rings she had found, clutched tightly over her heart while the other rested on her belly.
By the time he walked in the door she probably would be starting to doze off.

Being in the shop always cheered Aska. It made him feel like he was being actively useful, more than the just passive usefulness he experienced when he just kept living and being a font of life energy or whatever for Althai. He traced his fingers over the gem; it had been not quite six months. Not quite five since he'd met Whisteria, not quite three since she'd told him of her pregnancy. He didn't know how long elvish pregnancies lasted, but he was hopeful, almost, that he'd be there to see his child born. Imagining what the baby would be like occupied most of his time not spent thinking of Whist or talking with Althai; he didn't know what the God was thinking, telling him to pick up the sword. Learning any weapon would be an exercise in futility, and learning to heal, well. It wasn't like Althai would lack for power or talent.
Still, he wondered. Would the baby take more after him, or after Whist? He imagined the child with lilac hair and pale skin, with dark hair over smooth violet--he smiled and shook his head. If it was meant to be, he'd see the baby soon enough. Months, not years.
He didn't knock on the door; he knew Whisteria would be home, unless a customer kept her late, but even then he trusted her to inform him somehow. She was considerate that way, usually. And he was pleased to see her dozing off on the couch, as expected; he smiled, stooped to kiss her forehead, and proceeded to the kitchen. Cooking, that was a thing he could do.
Swords. Hah.

"Aska?" Silver eyes fluttered open when she felt the brush of lips against her forehead. But then he was already in the kitchen- something that was not entirely surprising. She sat up and stretched, careful not to drop the rings. Silently she wished she had the forethought to wear something with pockets, so at least she could tuck them away out of sight for now. If nothing else it was motivation to 'pop the question' sooner rather than later, it would be hard to keep them hidden all night.
Whisteria got up off the couch and headed to the kitchen, leaning against the doorway with her hands behind her back. "You could have woken me, you know."

Aska could have told her she was sleeping for two, or that he didn't want to wake her, and while both of these things were true both implied that he thought he knew better than Whist. This would not be a good thing to imply; that was a lesson he'd learned young, long before he knew what night elves or gods were. Nobody, male or female, likes to be told another person knows better than they do. "I knew," he agreed, looking over his shoulder.
She really was lovely. He smiled at her and looked back to the sink; two entire mugs populated it. Damn, but he'd been getting sloppy, hadn't he? There was a time when those mugs wouldn't have even made contact with the bottom of the sink.
"How are you feeling, Whist?"

"I'm alright, actually." If you could ignore the part of her mind that was sort of terrified. "Managed to get enough sleep, not feeling sick or in a bad mood." The druidess walked over and hugged him from behind, resting her head against his shoulder. "I missed you today." She was careful to keep one hand turned so hopefully he would not see what she was holding, at least not right away.
She did not notice, nor particularly care, about the mugs. Even if she had noticed it was hardly a mess at all.

All of those things were good things, and he was pleased to hear them. He smiled, turning his head to kiss the top of hers; Aska leaned forward a bit to wash the dishes, dark curls falling in his eyes. He needed a haircut. He needed a whole lot of things, but haircuts were manageable, they weren't exactly life-changing decisions. "Missed you, too," he said, setting the mugs in the dish rack when they were suitably clean. After he dried his hands, he took Whisteria's hands gently in his, untangling himself so he could collect the things he needed to cook dinner. "How was everything at the shop?" Usually she had a few interesting stories to tell, and they were things he delighted in hearing, since his requests and commissions were often much more mundane than hers.

Whisteria might have made a small disappointed noise when he disentangled himself, though she understood why he had done so. It was hard to manage cooking with someone clinging to you. "Oh...you know, the usual. And I managed to turn my brother-in-law into a human." She said this oh-so-casually as if it were nothing odd at all. Though it had not been how the potion was supposed to work at all it had been amusing none the less. "That and I did a bit of trading to get something special."

Whist only had one brother-in-law. He was a god. Aska laughed at the idea of Xun Jiang as a human, and then realized it probably wasn't meant to be funny. He shrugged, grinned at Whisteria, and said, "So I guess that was a fun oops?" He couldn't imagine that Xun would have been too put out. He seemed like a chill dragon god of something or other.
"What is it," he asked, curiously.

"Yes...the potion was supposed to turn him into a night elf though." She laughed then. The look on Xun's face at first had been priceless.
"These." Whisteria smiled and opened her hand to reveal the rings she had found. "There are some human customs I still don't understand, night elves are simpler in some ways..." She paused and drew in a breath. "I want you to know, if circumstances were different...I would have gladly spent the rest of my life by your side. But seeing as things are what they are...would you be my mate, my husband, for what time we do have?"

She rolled her fingers back from the rings, and Aska stared at them for a moment, then looked back to her face. Did she know what rings like that meant in his culture? Had he ever explained to her what shared rings would have meant to him, personally?
Evidently he hadn't, and he didn't need to. He was sure she didn't intend the hammer-smash of guilt that came with what she said to him, and though he knew he'd failed to conceal the momentary flash of hurt he smiled, just after, and put his hand over the rings. "If that's what you want," he said, "nothing would make me happier."

Whisteria did notice his momentarily sad expression and leaned in, kissing him softly. "I want no regrets." And she mostly certainly would have regretted it if she had not asked him. "There is no sense in giving up what, I hope, we would have eventually had anyway." Part of her wished he had been born a night elf, or herself a human on his world...then maybe things could have been different? "I love you so much, Aska...I have no idea how I could possibly put it into words." She took her hand in his, sliding sliding the larger of the two rings onto his finger.

It didn't hurt him to give her this. He wanted it, even, so it was better than not hurting; but he worried that in the end it'd hurt her more than it helped.
He'd only have died before her, anyway, he thought, and he slipped the smaller ring onto her finger and said, "I love you, too." It was something she really ought to know, he thought.

Whisteria kissed Aska again, pulling him close and wrapping her arms around him.
What he thought was not necessarily true, no one knew how long night elves would survive now that their immortality had been taken from them. The druidess was over ten thousand years old (she didn't recall mentioning exactly how old she was to Aska ever) and there were some still that were even older than she was. It had become just a wait and see thing.
