SHADOW RUN

General Information
The Shadow Run is both the simplest and most dangerous training course that can be run without a golem. A flurry of continuous attacks is what the Sun Division holds in highest respect, and the course reflects that. The course itself is a simple tunnel, reached via portal. Within the tunnel await hundreds of weak, hungry shadowlings. Nothing to worry about on their own, but capable of overwhelming a Hunter through sheer numbers at the first moment of weakness. At the other end of the tunnel is another portal, leading back to the course observation booth.

If you fail: your character is KO'd, but there's always a senior hunter in the observation booth with enhanced bandages at the ready. They should reach you in time. Really. Trained and trusty professionals on-hand 24/7.

If you win: peen points and bragging rights to those who take out the greatest number of shadowlings and go the most turns without needing to attempt a recovery maneuver.

    Mechanics
  • You must get through 5 waves of attacks to make it through the tunnel.
  • Simply roll for attack as you would in battle.
  • If you miss, your character falters in their attacking and is overwhelmed by shadowlings.
  • After 3 successful hits, you may use your weapon's charge attack.

    Bonus Mechanics
  • This bonus is consumable.
  • The bonus in this course is in the form of "recoveries" ~ these are would-be missed attacks that are quickly recovered and turned into a successful hit. Basically, they can miss once and roll again for an extra try. If you keep consecutively missing, though, and run out of recoveries, it's lights out. These do not equal an automatic pass for a round, you still have to land a successful hit to proceed.

  • Trainees: 0 recovery
  • Sun Trainees: 1 recovery
  • Hunters: 1 recovery
  • Sun Hunters: 2 recoveries

It had been a while since he had tackled the sun training course. The last time had resulted in him being thrown a ridiculous distance and near-asphyxiation. It was enough trauma to convince Wilson to avoid Shadow Run for a while, but now was probably the time to get over this little wall.

Okay so maybe not now now, considering they were still supposed to be rebuilding Deus, but most of the buildings were up now, far as he could tell. He wanted to get this over with. He wanted to actually complete the damn run for once. He was walking toward the training fields when he texted Deryk (he could have tried this course on his own, but it seemed weird not to have Deryk with him for this). They could bond over this…right?

Since Deryk had completed the shadow run, he hadn't really had any plans to revisit it. However, there was an exception made for Wilson since they had wanted to complete it together and all. He just hoped that this wouldn't go too poorly.

It usually did.

Taking in a deep breath, he went on and replied to the text.

Syusaki

Yeah sure thing. Meet you there
-Deryk

With that sent off, he made sure he had everything all set, then made his way to the training course. Despite having lived in the same house with him (until it got razed), he hadn't really spent that much time with Wilson lately. It was always good to get along more with a fellow death kid.

You are the only exceptionnnn

It wasn’t long until he received a reply from Deryk. Wilson read the message than put away his phone as he arrived onto the fields. He stood in the middle of the field, hands in his pockets while he waited for the other death hunter to arrive.

He was starting to feel a bit guilty about not rebuilding.

Maybe Deryk and Wilson could rebuild houses together after this; he still felt bad about Gale’s house after all.

Smiling, he waved at the blond as soon as he spotted the familiar coat. “Alright, ready?” Wilson waited, obviously letting Deryk go first.

No way Wilson was going first. Nope. Not at all.

Deryk had actually managed to get a little bit of building going on. It wasn't much, but it was still there. So he wasn't too guilt ridden about training instead. Spotting the dark haired hunter ahead, he grinned and jogged to catch up.

"Sure thing," he said while calling out Tooley. The nice thing about these shadelings? They weren't sentient at all. No trouble whatsoever beating them up.

He waited for the black masses to come at them as they normally did. However... they didn't. The training course did begin.. right?

"Uh..."

Slowly, a grey fog wafted into the area instead, and the sound of a rather reptilian growl could be heard.

"...Wilson? D-did you just.."

A flash of bright blue. And there was notably the face of a dragon in their presence.

"... Um. s**t."

If this was an updated course, he wasn't sure he liked it so much.

A new challenger has appeared!

Why did he feel so uneasy about the shadowlings not appearing? Obviously, something was wrong. Wilson shifted idly as he looked through his gas mask. “What is…?”

He could have sworn there was more fog than usual in the area. If that didn’t clue the death hunter in, then the growl overhead definitely did.

“Yeah, I did,” he answered grimly, looking up just as there was a flash of blue and a noticeably-familiar dragon. “You can say that again,” Wilson hissed to Deryk before he nudged the other hunter with his elbow. “What do you suggest we do? Run? Fight? Both?”

Deryk glanced from Wilson to the dragon, then back to Wilson.

"D-do you think we can take it?" he asked. He definitely didn't sound all too convinced. However. Not much time was being given, as the dragon was now breathing fire right at them both.

"AAACK!" he cried out while quickly running to the side. They might have to keep fighting for now.

Wilson looked at Deryk, then stared at the dragon for a long time.

A long time.

“Um, if we’re stupidly lucky?” he answered unhelpfully. Not long after, the insanity creature spewed fire at the two hunters. He cursed under his breath, the flames crackling in his ears while he rushed out of the line of fire. Wilson really wished there was some sort of rock to hide behind on this training course, but alas.

Planting his feet into the ground, he pointed his cannons at the dragon and fired.

"Don't got much choice here! Nope!" Deryk cried out as he was trying to figure out a way to hit the dragon. If it was anything like the phoenix, it wasn't going to be easy to hit. Gritting his teeth, he rushed at the big head and went to try and attack after Wilson fired away. He didn't really get to sink his blade in too deep.

It didn't help that he was nervous that this thing could just like.. .snap them in two.

The gas and the blade didn't bother them all too much. And in turn... the dragon lunged forth, aiming to bite them both in one large motion. Despite being made of fog, the move likely felt as if they were really biting right into them.

“You can say that again.”

Eyes widened when the dragon leapt forward, its jaws wide open. He tried to swipe the creature with his cannons, but he didn’t feel much. It was only a small hit to the dragon’s side. Wilson stumbled backwards from the bite and he fought the urge to drop his weapon and clutch his sides. He turned toward Deryk. “Maybe we should start running.”

Deryk froze in pain for a moment as he felt the dragon's attack. Staggering back after the initial spike hit him, he looked over towards Wilson.

"M-might not be a bad idea!" he shouted while trying to get in one more hit. However, he only ended up hitting fog and not much else.

The dragon sure as hell wasn't going to run. No, they were pretty determined to get some blood here. Though, for their next attack, they just roared.

Very.

Loudly.

The dragon let out a roar. “Ugh.” Wilson closed one eye while he tried to cover his ears, but having cannons for hands made that rather difficult. He tried to swipe at the dragon. Again, it was only a light hit. He sighed. “Alright, let’s get out of here!” he yelled to Deryk over the roar before he began to sprint.

Some training this had been.

Deryk made a wild swipe at the angry dragon, then turned to run after Wilson. Funny enough, he managed to actually sink his blade in pretty deep that time. Not that it made much of a difference to the fog.

"R-Right behind you Wilson!"

He said that louder than he wanted to. After that last roar, he felt like he was a little deaf for the time being. Maybe his ears were bleeding.
