Taking it easy just wasn’t Remarque’s style. Already the massacre of a battle was turning into just a memory, and he was eager to get things back on track. Which meant he had to get back to interacting with all sorts of people, not just gather energy.

When a Negaverse signature appeared on his radar, he was immediately interested. His ties in the Negaverse were slim, but that didn’t deter him. If Ares expected it of him, he would go the extra mile to try and get along with all of them.

Which started with meeting them.

This one felt like it could have still been new, so Remarque redirected his path to lead to the energy signature. He proceeded with a casual, albeit well directed step. He did not mirrorwalk to bridge the distance; he was close enough that it would have been unnecessary. Moving between trees, he was pleased to see movement—and then slightly disappointed when, after all that effort, it was just Mesolite he was looking at.

Not that there was anything wrong with the girl, though it certainly wasn’t the new face he’d been expecting. She was at an awkward position and seemed invested in something, though he couldn’t make out what she was doing from where he stood.

So he moved closer, stepping lightly until he was standing just behind her. “Mesolite,” he purred, “What do you have there?”

She had found a kitten. And it was one of the cutest things she had ever seen. Ever. It didn’t look like it was more than a week old. She was crouched next to it, gently stroking the soft fur, listening to the poor little creature mewling. Was it hungry? She would have to figure something out to do with it…

Of course kittens were a very, very large distraction, and the tiny animal was monopolizing all of her attention, she didn’t feel Remarque. When the male spoke, the lieutenant nearly screamed, turning around and punching wildly, just managing to hit Remarque’s arm.

It was a completely pathetic punch though, and she cursed and held her hand after she did it. It seemed she hurt herself more than she had hurt him. “Oh. Remarque. Don’t sneak up on someone like that…it’s rude you know.”

Though, perhaps she shouldn’t have been so engrossed in the kitten. What if he had been an enemy and had decided her lack of attention was a good way to get rid of one of the negaverse. Yes, she should have been paying attention. Why did he always find her when she wasn’t working? He must think she was a lazy recruit.

“…Sneak up?” he challenged, far more confused by her punch than hurt by it. “It’s not like I came through a mirror this time, I walked here. You had plenty of time to sense me. What the hell was that?” he asked, rubbing at his arm as if he were expecting it to start hurting. “—Was that a punch? Did you try to punch me or was there a bug on me or something?”

Sure, she was a girl, and a Lieutenant, but that was a weak little punch. She wouldn’t have stood a chance if he’d been a threat. And what was that over there distracting her? A strange little ball of fluff and—

Oh. A cat.

“…You didn’t feel me coming because of a cat? Well, hell. If I had been a knight, I could have popped up behind you and broken your neck. Or stabbed you in the back. Who taught you how to punch, your grandmother?”

Mesolite felt a flush overtaking her face and she looked back at the kitten, making sure it was all right. She looked back at Remarque and then made a face at him. “It’s not a cat, it’s a kitten, you twit.” She wasn’t happy with being found out, and she felt her temper rising with her embarrassment.

“No, my grandmother didn’t teach me how to punch. Nobody did, I guess. The movies did, but, I suppose it would have gone better with some cheesy sound effects.” She wasn’t looking at the kitten now, but continued to gently pet the small creature with a finger, forcing herself to calm down. What would it help if she got mad at Remarque. It wasn’t his fault that he kept catching her doing strange things. She just was never on her A game when he was around. So, she should fix that.

“Also, I spend most of my time doing stage fighting, so I suppose my punches are rather lame. On stage one wants to avoid hurting their partner. But, that would just defeat the purpose of fighting in the war. This wasn’t some sort of violent play, no, she had to get serious about her fighting.

“If you think you’re so good, then you teach me.”

Cat, kitten—what the hell was the difference? Remarque cared little for felines and their wicked ways. Thankfully this didn’t turn into a cat vs. kittens debate.

“If I think I’m so good? Well. Let me promise you something, Mesolite.” He donned a cocky—yet still somehow attractive—smirk. If he could help it, he’d never sacrifice appearances. “I am good.”

Teaching someone how to fight was something he had grown quite confident in; he’d taught a number of people basic boxing lessons—he really needed to start charging them—and even given a few other chaos aligned members a number of lessons. Partially, he wanted to help them. Partially he wanted to make sure that his allies were strong enough to have his back if he ever needed them. Kind of mostly he just liked to show off.

“And if you want a few tips, I’m more than happy to deliver.”

He shifted positions, laced fingers and cracked his knuckles before taking a more relaxing stance. “—I mean. Push ups, lifting weights, that sort of thing will build you muscle, but if you want to learn how to punch, that’s easy enough.”

Curling his hand into a fist, he took a step back to put some space between them and threw a few mock punches into the air in rapid succession. He didn’t keep to just a single type—he started with a hook, followed with a jab, and finished with an uppercut before dropping his hands to his sides.

"I took up boxing a few years ago," he added, not that he needed to name why he should be credible. He'd made it to eternal--that had to count on top of everything else. "Kinda came in handy once I got drafted into this whole war thing."

She rolled her grey eyes, making a disgusted face. Oh god, he was a guy after all. An arrogant, self centered, terrible guy with an ego that was far too large for him. And here she had been wondering if he really was different. She was starting to come to really respect him…but, no matter.

“I see, so in other words, you’re Mr. Macho, and everyone should be terrified of you, hm?” Mesolite stood up and scooped the kitten up, placing it in the grass. If her and Remarque were about to start hitting each other with flying fists, she didn’t want the poor kitten to have to get trampled in the process.

“I’m ready for my first lesson, oh wonderful boxing champion of the world.” The lieutenant’s fists were raised, and she stood on the sidewalk stiffly, waiting for him to make the first move and start teaching her how to throw a good punch…oh! She could hit Monochrome with a good punch. Yeah. That would be fun.

Mr. Macho? Well, he certainly wasn't a pansy or a pushover, so if that's how she wanted to label it, that was on her. He glanced to the kitten, perhaps out of disgust or just to make sure he wasn't going to step on it, and then looked to Mesolite. "You won't get far with an attitude that dry," he pointed out, though didn't seem in a bad mood. "Since you're just starting—we can start with the bare basics. Stance is important. Legs slightly spread to ground yourself—you don't want to get knocked over or sacrifice balance when throwing a blow. The last thing you want to do is wind up on the ground because you overshot yourself or couldn't take a blow."

He took up such a stance for display, and then continued, "And, speaking of taking a blow." He raised his right arm. "Defense. Use your non-dominant hand. You want your stronger hand to be the one doing the damage. But that's easy stuff. And for punches—you follow so far?" he asked somewhat rhetorically.

"Punches—there are four simple ones, and depending on the situation, where your strengths lie, and who you're up against, you'll want to vary between them." He curled his hand into a fist to show her the safest way to throw a bare punch, drew his arm back, and then punched into the air. "Jab," he labeled, then continued down the list, presenting her with the three other punches while displaying a significantly slowed down display of each. "Cross, hook, and uppercut."

He lowered his hands and relaxed his stance after the uppercut. "—You want to give them a go or do you want me to go through them again?"

Mesolite watched and listened, and moved her hand in the same action slowly, trying to mimic the Dark Mirror’s movements. She nodded after practicing a few more times. “I think I have the gist of it, at least. Do I get to try and punch you now?” The lieutenant grinned taking a stance that was just about right, her foot might have been turned out too much, but she wasn’t that worried about things like that.

“I mean, if you’re manly enough to let me try and punch you that is.” She glanced back to the still mewling kitten. That poor creature. At least he would have a home tonight, yes he would. And she would take care of him forever. Even if it was against the rules. Rules were for losers anyway.

Grey eyes slid back to Remarque and she grinned almost lazily. “I’m ready whenever you are. I’ll block with my left hand and punch with my right, I’ll keep my stance there so I don’t topple over, and I won’t punch too hard that I fall over that way. Is that about it?”

Remarque gave her a look; he didn't appreciate anyone questioning his manliness. Jeez, did she think he was some weakling or something?

"Just about it," he said; he took a step forward and tapped her foot with his own, correcting her stance before he resumed his place in front of her. "Now, if you really think you've mastered it, go right ahead. Let me see what you've got. Just," he gave her a very stern look. "Not the face. I've got plans for tomorrow, so I don't need you getting lucky and hitting me with a good blow."

He wasn't one to comfortable let someone punch him, but he wasn't going to let this girl sit here and think he couldn’t take it. Besides—she was a girl. Younger and smaller than him. And she was only a lieutenant.

He wanted to see her throw a good blow—wanted to know that his lessons amounted to something, but damn. He didn't want to walk out of this bruised if he was just trying to do a good deed.

Mesolite scowled as he fixed her stance with his foot, though nodded feeling how much balanced she felt when he did so. Well that was lame. She had thought she was doing it right, but. Well. Stupid controlling boys.

The lieutenant drew in a breath and curled her hand into a fist, delivering a punch right to Jett’s arm. Well, it didn’t hurt her knuckles or anything, and she thought it was a pretty good punch. Better than the last one had been at the very least. Maybe he would have a nice little bruise on his shoulder by the time he was done.

She grinned, then punched again, then a third time, her confidence growing each time she hit him. “So…have I improved, Remarque? Tell it to me straight, okay? I think I got at least a little bit better with that last one. My knuckles are even stinging some.” The girl stretched, cracking her knuckles and letting out a pleasant sigh as the small air bubbles popped in her joints.

“And if you don’t think I got better. Tell me why and tell me how to fix it.”

They weren't the hardest hits he'd ever felt, but there was no denying that if Mesolite kept pounding at him like she was, he might very well wake up tomorrow with some bruises. "No, that's already an improvement. Good job," he complimented, offering a not of approval. "Very nice. I'm impressed with your improvement. You keep up practicing like that—go lift some weights, do some push-ups—you'll be a force to be reckoned with in no time. Ditch those paperclips, your fists'll be lethal," he promised with a wink.

He stretched, mostly an attempt to loosen himself up. He didn't know if Mesolite had plans to continue punching him, but if she did, he wasn't going to stand here, muscles tight. He didn't mind helping her train, but he'd be damned if he was going to take a beating. This was training, not punishment. "You ever consider hitting a up a gym to work on boosting your strength?"

She sighed. “I was afraid you’d say that. What a drag. If my paperclips weren’t so derpy, I wouldn’t need to go to any stinking gym. And I mean that in the most literal sense. Most gyms smell like sweat and nasty beefed up steroid filled men. And that is a smell that I don’t want assaulting my nose.” Mesolite drew in a breath, then punched his arm as hard as she could one last time, if only to hopefully prove that she did not need to go to some nasty gym and be stared at by a bunch of creepy guys.

“I don’t mind doing all of that other stuff at home though. But I won’t go to a gym. I’m not a piece of meat, and I refuse to be treated like one. Got that, Remarque?”

She gave a huff, standing much more rigidly than she had in almost all the time she had known Remarque. Her hands were folded across her chest and she looked a mixture of angry and embarrassed. “I hate guys. And I guess I was wrong about you being an okay guy. Maybe there was hope for them after all. But no. I bet you’re one of those meatheads who just like to watch women’s boobs bounce up and down at the gym too, aren’t you.”

Remarque stared for a slight moment, rather surprised by Mesolite's outburst. It wasn't at all what he was expecting, so his look of contemplation and a sharply quirked eyebrow were perfectly acceptable, all things considered. "Actually," he clarified, "It's kind of distracting to get a good workout if you can't focus on what you're doing. Do you think I learned to box by watching some woman's chest bouncing around? Besides, I've got a girlfriend who would kill me if I looked at another girl the wrong way. And I'd like to add that I am very happy with her, and therefore have no reason to be checking out another woman. And if you're so against men, it's not like they don't have specific classes for women. Or—there's a women's health clinic and gym I could refer you to. Or you could go spend a couple hundred dollars to by the equipment they rent out for like—what, thirty bucks a month? I think you can get a free month trial on that, too."

He rubbed his arm to straighten out the fabric where she'd punched him, still seeming a bit begrudging at her accusations. Did he appreciate a woman's body? Well, yes, absolutely. It was practically a crime not to. Did he let women interfere with his workout regiment? Absolutely not.

Remarque seemed like he would be the type to have the very best of everything, and girlfriends, well…that was something that she would like to see. She thought for a moment about going to the women’s gym and just shook her head. “No, but I guess you’re going to be stuck taking me to the gym, Remarque. You’ll have to keep those mean ol’ steroid guys away from me, okay?” She grinned.

“Maybe bring your girlfriend along or something and we can stare at her boobs, if you want. I promise I won’t tell her how much you think she’s attractive. Promise.”

She thought this through for another moment then nodded. “Just tell me the time and place and I’ll meet you at a gym somewhere. You can really show me what to do so I can get to being a better puncher. And not such a granny hitter.” The lieutenant moved away, finally scooping up the kitten, giving the Dark Mirror Senshi a challenging look. This was going to be fun. And who knew. Maybe there would be some super attractive girls in the gym.

While Mesolite's demands seemed relatively reasonable, Remarque watched her with a scrutinous eye when she scooped up the kitten. He wasn't so sure that Raven would like to hit up the gym with him and another girl—especially one that wanted to check out her breasts.

He wouldn’t have pegged Mesolite for being attracted to the same sex, and even now he wasn't sure if she was serious or just teasing.

"I suppose I can do that," he said. It couldn’t hurt to bring it up with Raven, who he suspected didn't care which gender was admiring her, just as long as someone was. "How about Thursday? Four? There's a gym—" he fed her the address and then added for further identification "— It's got a big blue neon sign. Plus, it's right across from one of the best burger joints in DC. Which made it a prime location, in his eyes. "I'll introduce you to the place, and to my girl. That aside—" he couldn’t ignore the kitten any longer. "—What, exactly, are you going to do with that…?"
