Syd was weak, tired, and a bit shaky. She hadn't been conscious of what was happening towards the end, but she knew now what had happened. A fresh out of the pod trainee had saved her life. And the least she could do was thank him. That's why she was carrying a gift of snacks from the machines through the trainee dorms, looking for the man named Melvin.

She had an idea, of course, it wasn't hard to find at least one working room after all the destruction from... well, to put it bluntly, Jerry. She stopped at one door, knocking lightly and peeking in, since the door was open. It was the third one she'd knocked on. But at least this hunter knew where to find Melvin. With that knowledge she headed for the new trainee's door, knocking lightly.

Melvin had been no way seriously injured by the mission. While he did suffer a scythe cut to his side, which HE felt was a serious deal, in comparision to those in the ward being rushed to surgery, he felt like a baby even pointing it out. At home, if he was cut, everyone would take it as a big deal. Even saying you were ALMOST mugged or stabbed would get a large reaction, but everyone here barely batted an eye. He'd never been cut by someone before, and the fact that it seemed typical here had him worried.

Of course, there was plenty on his plate to be worried about.

In his room, he read over some pamphlets he managed to be given or pick up around Deus as he tried to become familiar with the rubble that was to be considered his workplace and home. It also seemed best to be out of the way.

The knock on his door was completely a surprise, and in the pit of his stomach, he hoped it wasn't another mission.

Rising up, he rolled down the sleeves of his sweater he had nudged up and then pushed down his goggles from where they were resting atop his head.

The door open, and he was surprised to see the woman he had dragged out of the hell-cave they had been in during their mission. "Oh...hello." Again, he had no idea what her name was. It really made life around here awkward. He felt like a freshman again.

"Hello," Syd said. "I came here to thank you," she said, holding out her gift a bit awkwardly. "My name's Sydney, Sydney Lowe, I'm a Mist Intermediate trainee. You saved my life," she summed up, feeling a bit awkward. "Um... sorry I couldn't come up with something nicer," she added quietly. "It's still a bit difficult to get off the island at the moment."

And she just stood there, like an idiot, holding out her gift. Yes, good impression Syd.

Melvin grew up in a neighborhood where people would knock or come knocking on the doors of new movers to present them with baked goods and gifts which meant he was also used to such practices and also knew proper protocol. He'd once accompanied his mother to welcome in a nearby dentist and 3 cats with a plate of oatmeal cookies. It was nice to see a gesture to welcome someone into a new place, but he had never once been in a situation where someone thanked another for saving their life. This small detail made a bi difference, but he fell back on something familiar to help brush off such a new and strange situation.

"Ah, nice to meet you, Ms. Lowe. Melvin Wood." He reached out, offering his soft, gloved hand. "Oh, come in." It wasn't inviting into a house, but leaving someone on the doorstep was considered rude. It wasn't exactly clear to him why, but she seemed tidy enough, and considering what state she was in when he dropped her to the medics, he didn't want to strain her by standing up too long.

"Thank you," Syd said with a slight smile as she went into the room. She looked for a chair to sit on, feeling a bit tired already. That was pathetic. "I don't believe I've met you before, are you newly hatched?" she asked. "What a way to be woke up, if so," she said, picturing it with a wince.

She sat down in the chair at the desk, trying not to look as tired as she felt.

"I guess if hatched is how you put it, then yes." It was a strange way to say something you reserved for newborn chicks on a fully grown man. "I was out of those pods a bit before the entire place became attacked. Wasn't much use then." He wasn't much use during the mission either. "So I guess you can call me new to the game."

Melvin's room was scarce of much as most of his things were already neatly placed inside the small dresser and the desk provided as standard in his room. A laptop, Ipod, and cellphone sat dead and useless on the desk, unable to be used. Melvin had just assumed the batteries died during his stay in the pod and was still trying to figure things out.

Shutting the door, he moved to sit on the end of his bed. "How are you feeling?" It was typical to ask considering she had been nearly diced up by some weird creature back in that cave.

"I'm doing better," she said, thinking about it. "This... isn't a job for the weak of heart," she added. "Although from what I can tell, those that were captured before us were--well, I suppose we each have our burdens to bear." She shook her head, changing the subject. "And your weapon? Have you grown accustomed to it?"

She was, and probably always would be, quite a fan of the hunter weapons in general, and extremely enamored of her own.

Melvin had to question if he was the "weak of heart" and what options he had if he was. Considering he had been pretty much told that his choice to come here meant no turning back, he didn't think a nice office job was waiting for him if he didn't cut it. The others before her seemed to be the ones that either didn't make it, or just an example of why this job was difficult.

The mission pretty much punched that reality into him rather efficiently.

"Uh, my weapon." He leaned over, opening the side dresser by his bed and pulling it open to pick out the red pen inside before sitting upright again.

I hope your face gets torn off and used as a chew toy.

Melvin probably shouldn't have ignored his weapon for the better part of the day and kept her in that drawer. "Well, not yet." His opinions of his weapon was very low. "I haven't had time to really get use to it."

Despite how blessed you are. I could have any hunter I want, and I picked you.

He really wanted to put her back in his drawer again. "Is there any way to turn them off?"

"Very rarely do they get 'turned off.'" Syd admitted. "That's when you know you're in serious trouble. I take it you don't exactly get along?" she asked with a frown. She didn't like the idea of two partners that couldn't at least grow to deal well together... it struck her as dangerous.

"Have you spoken with them? Perhaps you can find something you have in common? Or some sort of way you might... persuade them to work well with you?"
PostPosted: Tue Aug 14, 2012 6:48 pm

"I don't like so much talking in my head. It's distracting, and she doesn't have very much to say. A lot of complaining." And he could already feel her starting up. Right when she started, he leaned over, dropped her into the dresser drawer, and closed it, before resuming their discussion. There was a slight irritation as his eyes winced as she continued, but he knew she's shut up at some point.

"I've already talked to her. It's just that she's not the type of person that, if she was in a group of friends, I'd want to talk with. I guess we can't trade them for another?" He asked, wanting to know all his options. "I also don't know how to persuade an inanimate object. Can't exactly bribe a pen."

"But she's not just a pen," Syd said. "She's your partner. She sees and hears what you see and hear. So I would suggest finding some activity that she enjoys that you could enjoy as well. My Izy is always interested in a good book--"

Izy whispered. She didn't dare flush.

"Or music, he enjoys both listening and singing. He also enjoys shooting practice very much," she went on. She seemed quite happy with all of these facts. "So... um... do you see where I'm coming from?" she asked.

He really didn't want to argue with someone who was both his senior in experience and recovering, but the idea of a parasite being his partner was not something he wanted to easily accept. Even if this was the standard protocol in working here, his weapon was a tool created from something disgusting. Saying he wanted to be best buds greatly lowered his standards for friendship.

"I see what you are getting at. Find common ground and work up from there." It was a type of work he didn't want to really put much effort in. Saliva, as she called herself, felt more like a wild animal he had to train.

"What if my weapon refuses to work with me? Is there a way to reprimand it? A sort of...swatting them with a newspaper, but for weapons?" That would certainly make working with her easier.

"Do you know... I'm not certain," she admitted. "I've had to reprimand Izy a few times, and withhold activities that he enjoys, as well as ignoring him often works, but I've never thought of... punishing him. I think, honestly, that anything that could hurt them would be something that would hurt you, as well."

She frowned slightly, leaning back and crossing her legs. "But I suppose you could ask one of the full fledged hunters, they might possibly know of a way. Although I think it might be... rash. Remember that you and she are bonded together for life. Do you really wish to have a warring relationship with someone that you will rely on in life or death situations?"

He hadn't gotten such a major detail when he was learning what little he had learned about weapons. While the mission did show he had to defend himself or be killed, he didn't know he couldn't just get a replacement if his broke or that if the weapon was hurt, he'd be hurt as well. This stunned him a moment, and he glanced back to the drawer a moment before looking at Ms. Lowe.

"I didn't know that many details about the weapon I have, or that I was that connected to her. I thought it was just a ability that I could hear her and change her, but not something as drastic as her being hurt meaning I'd be hurt." He rubbed one temple as Saliva was still complaining his his mind, but she was going quiet. It wasn't fun to argue and complain to someone who didn't respond back. So far, that trick alone had been working for him.

"I guess I never was in a life or death situation to be asked that, or have to rely on someone because of that. You don't really get too many dangerous situations when just walking around back home. I guess with that mission, you all know how best to use your weapon to live." It was probably luck that let him be alive today, but considering the fact she said people DIED doing this, or get seriously injured like she had, he had to work on his own weapon.

"I'll work on it. By the way, what is your weapon?" Now that it was brought up, he was curious. Were they all guns? He had seen some other glowing weapons during the mission but everything had been a quick blur.

"They provide a shield... it stops the attacks of the monsters we fight from hurting us to a degree," she explained. "You'll understand better the first time that it's broken. Izy--his full name is Izadore," she went on, touching the golden choker around her neck. It changed into a shining gold patterned crossbow. "Is my weapon," she said, holding the weapon where he could see.

"As a Mist," she went on, "I'm expected to be able to fill in for any of the other sections. Thanks to Izy I manage to do... decently at that. Although I'm not nearly as good at what they do as they are, especially those Sun hunters. Their weapons tend to be massive and overwhelming."
