The songs of his people were in the form of howls, their melodies carried by the wind. It was ceremony, tradition, celebration when they were sung. But on occasion, a rare occasion, a traveler would learn one of their refrains and take it with them. Or, they would record their song and take it with them. Such was how King ended up with the music box from his cousin in part. A commission by his kin so he might share a song though he was so far from home. To mourn the loss of him during the summer hunter he'd said in the letter. The brass and bone gears turned, twines stuck by the small prongs as they wound around the cylinder.
He wasn't quite sure how it worked, but the song of storms, the song of rain, of soon coming snow played. It was not the song of his people, but more regional. The letter also said how it seemed wrong to take one of the more tribal tunes and place them into something false. Still, the song of storms was familiar, something he'd missed hearing, sad connotations or not. Setting the music box down next to him as he laid back on the cool earth, cloud hung overhead. Part of him wondered if it would bring the rains, coming from a music box of not. A song of mourning, he would not mourn the dead, only the sadness he felt at the fact he couldn't go home to be with friends and family.

Lament was not strictly sure where exactly xie was going. But that could really be said about a lot of things that happened to xir lately, and xie really wasn't going to complain for finding something new to do, if... that was something xie found.
Which in theory xie would, but...
For all xie'd seen a lot (a lot) of people about, xie hadn't actually managed to get up the nerve to approach them. It seemed kind of pointless, for one thing, because xie was not exactly sure what to say about... about anything, really, so xie'd only make xirself look stupid. Not exactly high on xir list of things to do, which xie thought was pretty understandable. But still... xie was kind of lonely. Xie'd taken on this whole wandering schtick just until xie knew what, exactly, xie could say to people, but then xie'd heard this inexpressibly familiar song and...
The song came from a box, xie observed, a box laying before a boil with a wolf's tail, and xie instinctively shied away, fluxing almost invisible for a moment but for xir lantern.
But that song. Xie'd heard it before.
When xie fluxed back into tangibility, xie was stooped over the music box, bright eyes alight with curiosity. "What is it," xie questioned, picking up the box to examine it from a new angle. "This song! I know it. What is it?"

Ears pricked at a voice he didn't know, red eyes looking up and around. The glow of the lantern was what he noticed first rather than the student. "It?" He questioned, tilting his head slightly, wondering what they were referring to.
"Oh, that!" They had picked it up without hesitation and is made him slightly worried. But, so long as they didn't do anything foolish he would not press. "It's a gift from one of my relatives. A music box with the song of storms." The tune was on a cycle ending just to start back up again, the wound gears still having a few rotations left in them.
The fact the student knew the song was a bit surprising, as he'd not met anyone who had much in relation to what he'd grown up with. "How do you know the song if I might ask? It's not very commonly heard around here."
