School was just around the corner for Gwendolyn Caspian, but she had so much work to do before then! Once classes had started, her free time would be absorbed and the devoured by schoolwork and reports, and her nightly patrols would be even more dangerous, now that she had gained a new strength, and the boost of confidence as well as a growing list of enemies within the Negaverse with each passing day. Gwen knew that she needed to improve what skills she had to use against the forces of Chaos, and if she was going to better herself, then she had to sacrifice her hobbies and get serious about her training.

This courtesy did not just stick with her Senshi identity, but her civilian one as well, as Gwen waited patiently outside the gym where she agreed to meet up with Jett Draven. Here, she would learn the ways of boxing, and perhaps learn more about this mysterious event that Jett had mentioned the last time with the Surrounding. Both of which would have been extremely useful for Super Sailor Tsui, as well as Gwen herself.

"Assuming he remembers to show..." Gwen thought to herself, unable to keep still and looking up and down the street from where she stood, hoping to see him approaching. She was eager for training and to see a friendly face; she was already getting weird looks from passerbys as it was. "Annnnny minute now."

“Oh, there you are. Did I keep you for long?” Jett asked from behind Gwen; her hair made it easy to recognize her, even from the back. He’d ended up parking behind the gym, and instead of walking around to meet her ended up taking a shortcut from a side entrance and walking out the front entrance. He had just barely stepped out of the gym and was still holding the door open so the girl could join him inside.

It wasn’t an unpleasantly hot day, but the air conditioning was far more refreshing than the sun beating down on Destiny City. Plus, Jett was eager to get started. There was something positively refreshing when it came to boxing—either with a seasoned practitioner or someone still new to the sport. Gwen expressing interest was a good reason to keep him grounded in his civilian life; with things happening in the Dark Mirror Court, he’d had a lot of extra energy to work off.

Since the battle a few weeks ago, he’d resisted sparring or roughing himself up until his old bruises healed—something his body had thanked him for. He was energetic, healthy, and raring to go. Bag slung over his arm, he was eager to get started.

The moment she heard his voice, all of the annoyance and anger from her own impatient nature had dissipated, instead replaced by her natural enthusiasm that was barely contained in a smile. She lied. "No, I just arrived early! Guess I was a little too eager and decided to get here early; besides, first time here, so I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to get lost."

She grabbed the gymbag that was laying at her feet and she unzipped the bag, throwing her cellphone into it. That last thing she wanted to be was interrupted again, and if Maddy found out that she was at a gym, with a handsome young man, and learning to box, she'd likely storm over and rain hell upon both of them. As far as Maddy was concerned, she was meeting with a 'study group'.

Tsui had brought enough cash with her this time around, having to sacrifice a few video games and art pads gave her a bit more spending money than she normally would have. The senshi part of her life was beginning to consume her other hobbies, and Gwen was sure that it would annoy her in the future, but for now, for someone who had finally reached a super rank, she had no choice but to improve herself. No pain, no gain.

"So, I don't have any gloves and I wasn't sure if I needed to go get some. Can I still box without them or can I rent a pair here?"

“You’ll be fine, I’ve got you covered,” the male said nonchalantly. “I brought a spare pair so you didn’t have to worry.” He didn’t bother to inform her that he always carried the extra pair with him, or that he’d loaned it out to many parties before her. He might have been biased, but to him they were better than any borrowed pair she was likely to find around here. Even he wouldn’t trust the gloves they had for rent.

When Gwen stepped inside, he allowed the door to close, and then gestured before he began to lead her towards a suitable area for their lessons to take place. He didn’t want the walk to be in silence—and therefore, awkward—so casually inquired, “So how’s life been treating you? All’s well in your world, or do you have any fantastic stories to tell?”

Jett wasn’t really one for gossip, but he didn’t mind listening. Particularly when he was scraping by information that could be useful in the future. Gwen might not have been the sort of person he could use for any personal gain ,but that didn’t mean he should waste an opportunity to get to know her a little better.

Besides; he wouldn’t want his silver tongue to get rusty.

"Thanks... I'll work on saving up for my own pair if you have any suggestions on where's the best place to get them. I may end up liking the sport later, so you never know," Gwen said, allowing for her relief to be seen with a wide smile. She honestly meant that as well; her life as a Senshi and her renewed fight against the forces of Chaos made it more of a necessity to find more ways to defend herself and others, and in truth, the thought of getting to legally punch someone else in the face was always a plus. She never thought that she was so violent, but perhaps with the awakening as a Senshi and the recent endeavors have awakened that primal will to fight within her. Not like she was walking up to innocent civilians and decking them, right?

She followed him, like a duckling to the momma duck, and she couldn't help but laugh at his question. "Oh, many things. None of which you'd believe, but pretty crazy nonetheless. The least exciting of all of that is that my mom's pregnant. With his child. But that's cool, because I always wanted a baby brother or sister!"

Yes, her mother expecting was definitely the least exciting part of her life, but still deserved to be mentioned. In fact, Gwen had been dying to talk to someone, anyone about it since she found out, and who better to tell than the guy who was more or less there when she got the call? She wasn't sure if he'd be excited, or even care, but she HAD to get it off her chest, preferably before she accidentally punched Jett too hard from holding it in. "Besides that, school's coming up, which means more bullies and other miscreants to deal with. They won't know what hit them, though..."

Jett was always surprised with pregnancies—and admittedly, always wary of them. Things tended to change—a lot—when a baby was expected. The changes weren’t always pleasant. Pregnancies carried too many negative thoughts with them in his mind, but despite past issues, he understood that congratulations were in order.

Gwen couldn’t have been too much younger than him, so for a brief instant he wondered if he would be so optimistic about having a new baby brother or sister if it were his mother carrying. He couldn’t imagine his mother pregnant at all—and considering how disinterested she was in the dating scene, figured it wasn’t something he would really have to worry about.

…Though his mother could probably use a new little thing to dote about. She’d been lamenting that Jett was getting so big—that he was going to be moving out soon, starting his own life, getting onto bigger and better things. “And that’s the least exciting thing of the week?” he asked with a good natured grin as he lead her to a less populated area of the gym that happened to sport a well-used punching bag. “Well. That makes me wonder what the rest of these unbelievable events are.”

He set his bag down and pulled out two rolls of elastic wrapping tape, setting one on the bench nearby and holding the other. Looking to Gwen he instructed, “I’m gonna wrap your hands before I get you in these gloves, so do me a favor and hold one out for me.”

"If I could, I'd tell you everything, but a lot of it is a little hush-hush, if you know what I mean..." Gwen had wanted to do nothing more than spill the beans and tell Jett everything. After all, he was the one that mentioned the strange story about a place called the Surrounding, a place that she had heard only from other Senshi at the meeting. Perhaps he was a Senshi himself? She had already exposed her Senshi identity to others, but now was not the time, nor the place. And so, reluctantly, she had to leave it at that. Besides, if she told him that he was off fighting Negaverse and their youma on her own, he'd likely think her crazy, reckless, foolish.

Not that it was far from the truth.

"We can just leave it at they were rather life-changing events," Gwen said, rather pleased with herself for having survived them so that they could be life altering. She shown no restraint in responding to his request, holding out her right hand, her favorite hand, without hesitation, allowing him to she the cut and bruised knuckles from her recent endeavors, and her mind immediately jumped back onto a topic that he had mentioned in their last visit. "So, about that story you were telling about the kids that went missing. I didn't get the chance to ask around too much and my sister wouldn't tell me anything, said it'd give me nightmares or something. Mind filling me in later?"

“I see,” Jett replied, though was perhaps far more interested now that she had told him how secretive her information was. He examined her hand when he began to wrap it, taking in the sight of her knuckles. That was not the sort of injury one received on accident. His eyes darted to her face as she spoke, though drifted back to her hand as he carefully—yet snuggly—prepared the elastic wrap. “Yeah, I can fill you in whenever you want. But you’re not allowed to judge me for telling you. Whether or not you choose to believe anything is up to you. All I’m saying is that if you call me crazy, I’ll knock some sense right into you.”

Giving the elastic wrap a last tug, Jett was satisfied with his that hand, tied it off, and reached for Gwen’s other hand as he retrieved the second roll of wrapping from the bench. He started this one and proceeded effortlessly. “So I see you’ve been getting into some fights already?” he prompted. He had seen many boxers and brawlers with knuckles bruised and chafed. His own were not in the best condition, though he already had boxing as his excuse. “Who warranted so much wrath that you were willing to cut up your hands on them?”

'Please, with the things I've recently encountered, the crazy people in Sailor suits and uniforms, and the youma that have tried to kill me, I doubt I can be the one to call you crazy, Jett,' Gwen thought to herself with a rather lopsided smile, having absolutely no idea exactly who it was that she was taking lessons from, or whom she was finding herself crushing over again. Stupid, typical teenage hormones! He was accounted for, but still, there was no harm in silent adoration, right? At least until she found someone for herself...

At his motion she held out her other hand, the one with more bruises and perhaps even a strain from her recent ordeals, and she was prepared to bite back any pain of discomfort that would come with it. In response to his question, she gave a shrug and glanced at the punching bag, a pathetic attempt to hide how she was trying to come up with a half truth. "Some guy really pissed me off one night, so I punched him. Twice, I think. Then there were his friends, and... yeah. I don't like being lied to... and I was really angry. The second punch may have been too much, though."

“Niiiice,” Jett said, almost approvingly. “A little stupid—attacking some guy in front of all his friends? …But you look like you came out okay. I’m half thinking you might not even need any boxing tips.”

He was in a good mood, so didn’t see any harm in letting it show. He finished wrapping her hand, gave it an approving nod, and then stepped away so he could work on wrapping his own hands. With the fight as it had been, his hands were still a little sore, but in addition to offering protection to the opponent, the padded gloves made a punch feel a hell of a lot softer on his hand.

“…Though I guess you can never be too prepared,” he said as he started wrapping his hand. The movement was quick and flawless; he’d done this enough times to be proficient in his sleep. “If I wasn’t sure as hell I could take out anyone with boxing, I might look into another fighting style. Living in Destiny City’s taught me that you can’t ever really be too prepared for anything.”

But he was sure as hell prepared for almost anything. “I kinda feel like it should be enecessity for them to teach you some form of self defense in school.” It might have crashed his parade back then—if the people he’d liked to pick on could suddenly stand up for themselves, but at least then they had a better chance of making it in the world. “Would help a lot when you suddenly get whisked away into a danger zone and nobody knows what the hell is going on except that it’s time to fight for your life.”

Given her recent track record and the people's, the STRONG people, she's picked fights with, Gwen had long since accepted that she wasn't the brightest crayon in the box, and while she knew that she should be playing a little smarter, she didn't really want to slow down, or not be prepared for another ambush or event like that. She would not be caught with her britches down again, and to do so, she needed all the help she could get.

"They should, but then I guess they fear their children will start being like those kids in the Hunger Game and will become monsters, or something," Gwen said, rather liking the idea of self defense lessons in class, though it gave the girl an outlet, so of course she'd like it. She flexed her fingers, trying to get use to the wraps, before putting on the gloves, and she really wished that she could just drop her defenses and tell Jett about just how close to home he was hitting with his statements. "But that's okay. That's why there are wise and strong gentlemen like yourself here in Destiny City, to help us out. I'm sure with your training, the crime rate against women would go down substantially!"

'Or in the very least, give me an edge in a fight, hehe.' Gwen thought, giving a few mocking jabs in the air but her form was off, too stiff and rigid, but she had no idea. "I don't really have a fighting style. Just some gymnastic tricks, and school yard brawlin' experience. If you want to know how to do a back flip or somersault, I'm your girl."

Gwen’s comment about the Hunger Games went right over Jett’s head; he had known there was a movie released, based on a book—but that was the extend of his education on the subject. Fiction—or any sort of literature—had never particularly fascinated him. If you had enough time to sit down and write hundreds of pages of words, then you needed to get out there and get a life.

A smile quirked onto his face when she mentioned the crime rate going down; in his head he’d already been responsible for lowering crime—on at least some level. He had to be making some sort of dent given his affinity to prey on the suspicious and dangerous. “Gymnastics?” he prompted. “Nah, no thanks. Haven’t somersaulted since I was in elementary school.” And back flip? ******** that, no way. You break your back doing that s**t. Jett liked his feet firmly on the ground and his eyes firmly on his opponent. Too much could happen if you were distracted doing acrobatics in the air. “Schoolyard brawling, though, That’s what got me into boxing, so I can’t complain. Everyone needs a starting point.”

He took a few more seconds to finish wrapping his hands and sliding on his own pair of gloves. “But if you’ve done gymnastics, I’m sure you’ve been a good girl and already got your stretching out of the way. Don’t want you to bruise or tear anything. I’m here to make sure you know how to throw a decent punch, not to watch you hurt yourself,” he said light-heartedly, pleasant smile still dangling from his lips.

Gwen had taken no offense to neither his disinterest in The Hunger Games or the offer to learn a few gymnastic tricks, as she wasn't that big of a fan of the book series or even the movie, and in truth, some people weren't cut out for the backflips and somersaults. No, Jett seemed more like a straight forward kind of guy in Gwen's mind; things like backflips and cartwheels in combat were more flashy, meant for showing off or just throwing the opponent off guard or even dodging a blow (with some finesse).

"Yep, stretched so much that you'd think I was Ms. Stretch Armstrong. Trust me, the last thing I want to do is injure myself again," Gwen said, instinctively stretching out her shoulders and arms and unable to hold in her excitement. She was ready to get this training session underway, and it was obvious in the way she bounced from one foot to the other, her white bangs and hair flopping around like ribbons and an eager grin on her face. "Alright! Are we ready to start? Because I'm ready! I'm so ready!"

Sure, she felt that she was acting too excited, too energetic, but she was just so eager...

Most of the people Jett offered to give lessons to leaned towards the complete novice side of things so he had to remember to remind people that boxing could hurt you if you weren't prepared. His body was more than just a tool to him, and for as invincible as he considered himself to be, when it came to something as simple as boxing, he wasn't going to chance hurting himself—or his pupils. He rolled his own shoulders again—just for good measure—and grinned. "All righty, then."

"Now, I figure the best thing to do is get a grip on whatever it is that you do know. You've brawled before, so I figure you've learned how to brace yourself, right? —Legs spread just slightly apart, planted firmly on the ground? You don't want your body leaning away from the blow or into it too much. Don't do unnecessarily fancy footwork," he paused and amended, "Unless you just so happen to be a gymnast and can handle that sort of thing."

Facing towards the hanging back, Jett wasn't here to build upper body strength—not today. Just to show the ferocity of each blow on a target other than air. "In a brawl, you just flail your fists, but when you break down boxing, there are four types of punches you ought to learn. The basics start with a jab—" he demonstrated, throwing his fist in a flawless presentation while moving slow enough that he hoped she could learn the position of his body for each move; he mimicked the gesture by presenting a display of each punch while naming them, "cross, hook, and uppercut."

The bag was shaking ferociously from where it dangled, though that was the price of both Jett's brute strength and what he got for punching a bag well below his weight. He glanced to Gwen when he was done showcasing the four punches. "Got it? Or should I do them again, slower?"

Finally, they were getting somewhere, and Gwen did nothing to hide the excitement from her form, in the way that her eyes lit up and her fingers flexed from under the gloves (one couldn't see them but they could see the gloves twitchy ever so slightly), and when he had talked about bracing, Gwen had mimicked the stance to the best of her ability. She felt like she had a good understanding of bracing oneself, considering how often she got into a fight, but Gwen, or rather, Tsui, was more of a dodger, than a bracer. And Gwen, never knowing when to keep her mouth shut, asked, "Dodging is okay, though, right? I mean, when you're my size, wouldn't dodging be better than bracing, or is that part of bracing as well?"

She flashed a proud smile when he mentioned fancy footwork and gymnastics, but she was too eager to learn to boast about her nimbleness and (to her) superior balancing skills. She watched, and then mimicked as best as she could, each type of punch, hitting nothing but air but in her imagination, putting a youma in front of her and trying to imagine its reaction to her punches. The uppercut was especially her favorite, as she could picture a youma or a DMS taking it straight to the jaw and flipping backwards. Her imagination often got the better of her, but she still managed to keep her attention on Jett. "I think I got it. Jab-cross-hook and the uppercut, right? Yeah, I got this!"

Confidence was Gwen's greatest strength and perhaps her hubris as well, and she grabbed the punching bag with her good hand and steadied it. She gave a wave of her hand, motioning for Jett to step aside so that she could give the four punches a try, and she asked before she dove into the task. "How much strength should I use? All of it, or just some?"
