How long, now since she first left the mountains? How long since she had seen the land of her birth? It was not a question that particularly bothered her, not in the traditional sense. Senka was not prone to bouts of homesickness. Indeed, she had no intentions of ever returning home. The mountains were too stifling, too secluded. There was not enough in that cold country to satisfy her questing mind, so she had left. No, she did not miss her home. When Senka considered the time since she had left, it was to wonder at all that she had learned and seen and done in that time. The young mare had met so many Azrein, even the great Valdien, and had learned so many of their stories. She had even met some of those humans. The king himself had greeted her and shared some of his painful history. As the shadow-coated mare trotted through the plains, she could not help but wonder who she would get the chance to meet today.

Tardis and Gallifrey. Their tale spanned years, some would say centuries, but none truly knew exactly how long the two had been together, or even where they came from. There were stories floating around that they came from somewhere other than the floating isle, but those were just stories fathers told their sons to awaken their sense of adventure. For adventure was indeed what these two Azrein sought in their travels. Tardis was always looking for ways in which she could help those less fortunate than herself, and Gallifrey was her conscience, always warning her if she appeared to be going too far. For Gallifrey did not believe in medding in others business. No, he was more one to sit back and watch them make mistakes and learn from them. But they got along well enough, despite their occasional disagreements. Every so often, Tardis would take off on her own after an argument, and Gallifrey would give her time to cool down before heading out in search of her. This was one of those times.
Tardis was still fuming silently inside, as she raced across the grassy plain. Who did he think he was, telling her what she could and couldn't do? The nerve of him! Of course, this same thought had run through her mind many times in the past, and she still had not come up with a good answer to her own question. Who he was, was her friend, her confidant, her guiding beacon, and not because he was so orange in color. But every time she tried to help someone, there he was, sticking his hat into it, finding some reason why she should not 'meddle' as he called it, in their affairs. But she was just naturally good at figuring out what was wrong in a situation, and what needed to be done to fix it. Sure, sometimes the outcome was not exactly as she had planned, but most of the time it wasn't so bad. As her mind raced through all of these thoughts, her pace across the plains started to slow. Eventually she came to a trot and began to take notice of her surroundings. It was then she noticed the grey horse not far away. It was lovely, and she wanted very much to run up to it, shout out a greeting, and become its new best friend. However, Gallifrey's words came springing into her mind; words about safety, and evil azrein, and she chose caution over exuberance. She slowly, and maybe a little sensually, crossed the distance until she could make out its features. Its back was turned to her, so she couldn't see the face, but what she did see was that it was a mare. She cleared her throat in order to get the mares attention.

Normally, Sena was very aware or her surroundings, a necessity living on her own for so long. So, she was most surprised when another Azrein made her presence known. She pranced forward a few steps, then whirled around to face the stranger. What she found was a lovely blue mare who looked a bit coquettish. Not that it would do the stranger much good against Senka. She was generally immune to the advances of other females.
"Good morning," she said, ever-polite. "You startled me."

"Please accept my apology then. My name is Tardis and I am very pleased to meet you. Are you traveling alone?" She didn't want to seem too invasive, so she kept her question simple. Sooner or later Gallifrey would find her; he always did, and then she would have to introduce this mare to him. She wanted a chance to get to know her first, before Gallifrey butted his nose in. Actually though, standing here looking at the pretty mare, she wondered if Galli might not find her pleasing to the eye himself. He'd never really shown any sort of interest in the mares they had met in the past. Certainly not to the point of wanting to have any sort of relationship with them.

"Not at all," she demurred. "I should have been paying more attention."
The mare considered Tardis's question. It was not a menacing one, but from the wrong kind of Azrein, it could be a dangerous one. Why would anyone want to know whether she was traveling alone? To learn if anyone would miss her, perhaps?
If Senka were a more suspicious individual, she might actually be wary. As it stood, she did not think that Tardis meant ill, and even if she did, Senka was confident that she could talk her way out of it, anyway. Besides, here in front of her was another person from whom she might glean fascinating stories. It was far too much temptation for her to turn away from.
"My name is Senka and I do travel alone." She cocked her head slightly. "Do you?"

"Actually no, I don't," answered Tardis, "but we had a disagreement of sorts, and I ran off. He'll show up sooner or later looking for me, and then I can introduce you to him. His name is Gallifrey, and we travel together, but don't get the wrong impression...We are not mates." She made sure to stress this last statement, so the mare would not misinterpret their relationship. "So, would you like to walk together for a while? I'd love to hear all about you. Where you come from, what has you out on your own. Gallifrey and I have traveled all over the isle for many years now, so we know quite a bit about it." She tried not to sound too full of herself, but she did have some pride in the knowledge she had obtained over their years of moving about.

For a moment, she had to wonder about the stress Tardis had placed on her not-mate-relationship with her travel-partner. Did that mean that they were in denial, or that they truly would never be mates? However, she quickly shrugged it off as presently unimportant. She could make a better guess later, after Gallifrey's promised appearance. What interested her now was that last bit. They had traveled the Isle for years? Tardis must know so much! How many stories would Senka be able to gather from her? She was eager to find out. First, however, there was another matter to attend to.
"Oh, yes. I would love to walk with you for a time."
It was rare that anyone showed a particular interest in Senka's past. Of course, that might be because she had a tendency to immediately take hold of the conversation and all but drag others' stories out of them. She had to think for a moment about where to begin.
"There's not much to tell, really," she began. "My birth herd lives in the mountains, isolated from the world and uninterested in its affairs. I had a quiet life growing up, a boring one, but the storyteller took me under her wing and told me about the Isle. Strange stories. Amazing stories. I had to see it for myself. So, as soon as I was old enough, I left. I'm afraid I have not long been traveling the world."
Senka glanced at the other mare, certain that her personal story would have bored her. She really had led an unremarkable life so far. Her story was only just beginning.
"But I am much more interested in you. You said you have traveled all over? Would you tell me about it? There is so much that I have not yet seen. So many stories I have not heard."

Tardis listened as the two mares walked along, not really thinking about where it was they were walking. So she had come from the mountains. Tardis and Galli had visited the mountains only once in their travels, but she didn't remember any herds residing there. She wondered if they were the same mountains, or perhaps a different range. "Just a couple of questions first Senka, if you don't mind. The mountains you refer to, would those be the Unthal or the Enrias? Galli and I have traveled the Enrias quite extensively, and to be honest, I don't remember there being a herd living in them. And this storyteller you speak of, what might her name be?" Tardis had heard tell of a gifted woman, well versed in the art of storytelling, and she wondered if it might not be the same.

"Of course," she replied. They were reasonable questions. The mare supposed she had been a little sparse with her details, but only because she had assumed that Tardis would not be interested. Clearly, she had a storyteller's need to gather all pertinent information.
"I resided in the Unthal range. Near the border of the Southern Field and the Sander Lake." Or it would have been near the border, if they had not lived so high and so deep. Still, Unthal was a long range, and any relative points were helpful. As for the other question...
"Her name was Bryanni," Senka sighed wistfully. The memories numbered amongst her best, but the pain was still sharp. "She died soon before I left the herd."

Bryanni? Tardis had to think for a moment, but she was sure that was not the name she remembered. She would have to ask Galli when he showed up. She was quite relieved to find that Senka had not been raised so close to the lands of the Six, but still, life in the Unthal's was no easy life. "I am sorry to hear of her death, and your loss. It sounds like she was very dear to you." She looked at their present surroundings and saw a copse of trees off to the left. "Come, let's rest beneath those trees, which I believe might have some ripe apples still in their branches, and I shall tell you of my travels." She trotted over to the group of trees, looking into the lower branches to see if there actually were any apples. Finding a few ripe ones, she gently grabbed them with her teeth and laid them on the ground. "There, we have something to snack on while we talk." She lowered herself to the ground and began eating one of the apples.

Very dear to her? That was perhaps not the word she would have chosen. Senka thought of the old mare who was gruff and hard and whose tongue cut sharper than even the winter chill. While Bryanni may have become fond of Senka in their time together, she rarely showed even a hint of it. Still, they had grown on each other, despite everything, and Senka owed much to her mentor. While the young mare may not have grieved for very long in the traditional sense, she still felt the loss and she would always honor the old storyteller who had given her something to live for.
So, when Tardis expressed her sympathies, Senka offered her a bitter-sweet smile and thanked her for her concern.
At the mention of a snack and what was sure to be a good story, she perked up, her melancholy disappearing as though it were never there.
"Mmm, this is very good," she observed. "They are not so sweet in the mountains." She turned curious eyes toward Tardis. "Where did you start your travels? Were you always with Gallifrey or did you meet him somewhere?"

"Galli and I have been together from my earliest memories. He's much older than I am, and he tends to act like my father, which I will point out, he is not!" This last statement was said with an air of conviction. To this day it still bothered her that the old stallion seemed to think he could influence her simply because they had been together for so long. "As to where we began our travels, that is quite a story in and of itself," she said, "For Galli and I come from a land far removed from your floating isle. If you have ever looked over the edge of your isle, all you would probably see are the clouds that float below you, but on a rare clear day, you might actually be lucky enough to see the lands below. It is from those lands that we come. There are many of us below the isle, and only a small fraction of those choose to leave our home and rise to your isle."

Senka nickered in amusement. The way she complained about her Galli reminded her of her own frustration toward Bryanni when she was younger. The old mare was the closest thing to a mother she ever had, but that did not mean she made it easy on the old storyteller.
"Below the Isle?" she wondered, amazed. She had heard tales of he lands below, of course. It was really not so very long ago that Azrein had returned to the Isle, but she had not really thought about where they had all come from. Somewhere above, perhaps? Or some other floating isle, if there was such a place? She had not realized that there were so many of their kind in the lands below.
"Really? What is it like?" Another thought occurred to her. She did not know about Galli, but Tardis certainly had no wings. "And how did you get here?"

"What is it like?" she said, "It's somewhat like here, yet at the same time, it's completely different. The colors below are much more subdued, because the clouds tend to block much of the sunlight. It is a rare, and beautiful day when the clouds part and its rays shine down upon our land. There are none of your humans living below. If they live on other isles, we have not encountered them yet in our travels." She trailed off for a moment, thinking about how best to answer her question about how they came to be here. For that was something that Galli had forbidden her to tell anyone. She was still trying to come up with a good explanation when she sensed him near.
He had decided to give her some time alone to think about their latest disagreement. He refused to label it as an argument. He came into the meadow, the sun shining down on his coat, making it look like the sun itself had come down out of the sky, to walk upon the isle. He saw her sitting underneath the tree, and cringed inwardly, as he realized she was not alone. Leave it to her to find another when he wasn't there to monitor what she said. He quickly crossed the distance to them. "There you are. I've been searching everywhere for you. And who is this lovely lady?"
She knew perfectly well that he had not been searching everywhere for her. He always seemed to know where she was, even when they were miles apart. But she would let him have his little piece of pride, and not confront him on it. "This is Senka." She turned to the mare and introduced Galli. "Senka, this is the one I was telling you about, meet Gallifrey."

Tardis's assertion that the colors were brighter on the Isle only made sense. But the rest, well...it was an interesting idea, the thought that the lands below did not have two-legged species. If anything, she would have thought that humans were more abundant in the lands below and Azrein came from...elsewhere. She did not have much time in which to postulate, however, as another Azrein was approaching.
He was a large stallion, to be sure, and he was brightly colored. Rather like a sunset, now that she though about it. Oh, and he was a persnickety one. He sounded just like a hassled parent. The idea made her smile.
...did he just call her lovely? She mulled the possibilities over, but decided that he was probably just being a gentleman. He probably referred to most mares as lovely.
"A pleasure," she said when Tardis introduced them. "I hear you two have been together for a long time. It must be nice to have such a constant companion, despite everything." Everything being their arguments, of course.
