Who: Ronan and Zeke
When: Friday, August 10th 2012; about 3pm
Where: Lab 305
Weather: Sunny, hot, and humid; Gambino's sea breeze does nothing!

There was a spark in his eye and a bounce in his step as he cleaned the lobby. It was all he could do to pass the time between when he was told and the man's inevitable arrival as sitting around was just simply out of the question. Rubbing the spray-dampened cloth across the edge of the front lobby's desk, the vet's eyes fell upon the crisp manilla folder Alex had left with him when he showed up at noon. He stopped what he was doing to lift the corner and take another peek at the name written primly on the 'Guardian:' line as if making sure once again that it was true.

Ronan Shea was still there, as it had been since it had been written down earlier this day. Dropping the cover back down, Zeke felt a renewed sense of delight and returned to polishing the desk's edge with vigor. His mind trailed back to what his sister had said to him when she presented the folder and metal case to him and his smile quirked a little higher as she teased oh so playfully that she just might have referred the man to Kyou. Obviously she had - that playful tone never lied - and all the same Zeke was happy she had and that Ronan was now going to be one of the family. He liked the man, they had hit it off well at their second meeting (the first being regrettably short due to busy happenstance), and when it came to the Lab there was nothing Zeke loved more than seeing Raevans (or the products to make them) going to good people.

As he reached the end of the desk, Zeke made a glance at the clock on the wall. Five minutes to three and still no sign of their newest addition. The raver did frown a little but knew Alex had called Ronan herself. She had made it a point to say her words had gone immediately to voicemail so there was a good chance the other man was at work. Since it was Friday that was no stretch if it was true, but all the same Zeke felt impatient. He wanted to see Ronan walk in, greet him, present him with his Essence and bottle, and hug the man in congratulations who had quite easily walked his way into Zeke's good books.

It was at that moment Zeke realized he had no idea what the selkie did for a living, and clucked his pierced tongue against the roof of his mouth. He might not see Ronan until late into the evening, but that was fine; all in good time. The only problem he saw was that he'd run out of things to clean by then! Chuckling at the prospect, Zeke shook his head and ran a finger across the surface he had just wiped down to check for any missed places. He found none. The desk now clean and free of anything that was once there before, he dubbed the lobby perfetto. The vet turned to admire his handiwork and then decided his own office was now in order. Pressing the cloth into his right pocket, Zeke reached across the desk to turn his music up a little louder, and then proceeded through the door behind the desk that linked this room with his own. Although he would be cleaning in earnest, there was no way he wouldn't be keeping one ear out for that telltale chime over the door. The moment he heard it - Ronan or not in the end - the person coming through would be getting a truly exuberant greeting.

"TGIF MAN! Though nicer weather would have been appreciated. Yeesh!"

Ronan had to hold back a laugh as he and two other co workers exited the aquarium, the three of them already bantering among themselves. Dave always had been the exuberant type.

"Hey, why so eager to get out of here? Don't like being around us or something?" Amanda cracked back, giving Dave a solid elbow in the ribs.

"And what about our aquatic buddies back there? No love for them either?" Ronan added in.

"Hey hey hey!" Dave said, holding up his arms and a mock serious expression on his face. "I as much as like you guys and our buddies, I still need to keep a little love to myself and my lady! Only so much to go around you know."

"Must not be much left for the lady then," Amanda muttered to Ronan, the selkie having to stifle an even larger laugh as Dave gave an indignant "HEY!"

Drifting into thought as the two of them squabbled, Ronan found himself wondering what to do. He had an extra hour of downtime today, but no set location or task in mind. He'd already run most of the errands he needed to this week....

"Ronan!" Amanda called over, knocking him out of his reverie. "You found your own lady yet?" He shook his head, Amanda giving an exasperated groan. "Why do I even ask anymore, always the same answer," she said, giving him just a poke in the ribs instead of the elbow Dale had received.

"At least visit some friends," Dave said, "gotta have some love in your life, even if it's just pitiful old platonic."

"No offer to hang out? You definitely don't have any extra love to go around today, do you," Ronan said drily.

"Nope!" Dave said cheerfully.

Ronan shook his head, chuckling. "Well, see you guys later," he said as he came to the sidewalk he needed to turn onto, waving goodbye to the others as they gave their own farewells. A tiring pair to be around sometimes, but at least he knew what he could do with his downtime now.

Fanning himself occasionally as he walked, the minutes and buildings passed until he finally came to his location, one Lab Three Oh Five. Making sure to stand in the shade of a tree as he checked traffic, he walked across and opened the doors to the inside, body relaxing at the glorious gust of air conditioning.

Striding into the lobby the Selkie looked around, completely oblivious to a certain message on the de-powered phone in his pocket.

In his office Zeke started at his desk, deciding to go outward from there. Everything on top of the tidy but still potentially dusty in the corners desk was placed on the floor or on shelves when they could fit, and Zeke ran the rag in his pocket over the surface a few times until he was happy. Then came the drawers, the sides, the front; all swept over with cloth and cleaner until they shown like new. Once done with that, he decided against piling his things back on top and instead swept to the far wall of his office to start dusting the filing cabinets.

Halfway through one, the overhead chime in the lobby pierced the music-filled air with a charming jingle of bells. Zeke froze, immediately becoming alert. His muscles tensed, his eyes widened, and before he could think - not that he wanted to past the word 'go' being repeated over and over in his head - a smile had crossed his features and he was darting for the door out into the lobby. His exit from one room and entrance into the next came as a literal leap and bound as the vet flew through the door and stopped immediately on the other side, eyes roaming the lobby rapidly before landing on the man who stood in its center. The smile that had blossomed across his pierced lips stretched from ear to ear and his bright eyes got brighter. A thousand words and things to say to the selkie crossed Zeke's mind in that instance, but none that passed through were what actually left his mouth when Zeke finally reclaimed his voice. Throwing his arms out wide - adding that cherry on top of such a grand entrance - the vet had no control over his volume when he suddenly proclaimed:

"You made it!"

What followed that was a burst of loud, happy laughter and another stint of Zeke taking on the likeness of a clumsy antelope as he made his way from the far end of the lobby to where Ronan stood. Forgoing a handshake, Zeke instead looped his arms around the taller selkie's middle and gave him a proper hug.

"I was beginning to think you wouldn't show up!"
PostPosted: Thu Sep 20, 2012 10:58 pm

While Ronan had been expecting a cheerful welcome, this went beyond all expectations.

"You made it! I was beginning to think you wouldn't show up!"

Not just cheerful. Confusing.

The selkie laughed as Zeke wrapped him in a hug, caught up in the man's enthusiasm despite being somewhat bewildered. After giving the raver a pat on the back he finally extracted himself, confusion showing clearly on his face.

"You were expecting me?" Ronan looked around the lobby, half wondering if there was a surprise party no one had told him about. He had no idea what the party would have been about, but it was the only thing he could think of at the moment.

"I just got off of work and decided to visit. I'm... missing something pretty major here," he said sheepishly, giving an embarrassed smile as he scratched his head.

When he finally let Ronan go, Zeke was still all smiles and jubilation. Contained in his eyes and smile was an excitement that he was sure was shared by the man who stood before him, but this certainty was proven false and the vet's grin faltered as Ronan looked confused and posed his question.

"Well...Yeah! I mean...Didn't you get the message?" Zeke cocked his head to the side as he spoke, then gestured toward the phone that sat near the computer on the secretary's desk. "Alex called you this morning. She said it went right to voicemail..."

He trailed off as Ronan explained the situation as he knew it. Realization crept into the raver's face and he laughed, all confusion and uncertainty on his end gone. So that's what happened! Amused, he immediately decided against telling the selkie just what the message was about. Instead, he gestured to the man's pocket and kept his lips pressed tightly together, silently suggesting Ronan turn his phone on and give Alex's message a listen.
PostPosted: Fri Dec 21, 2012 6:58 pm

Message. Voicemail. As Zeke gestured to his pocket it dawned on Ronan. He hadn't checked his phone today.

Digging into his pants he pulled out his phone, flipping it open and turning it on. The small screen blinked on and, sure enough, a notification for a missed call and a waiting voicemail. Confusion now turned into apprehension, the selkie wondering just exactly what he was going to hear. A small part of him suggested an answer, one that would explain quite a bit, but at the same time seemed like far too much to hope for.

Could he really...?

Activating his voicemail account Ronan raised the phone to his ear.

Standard “message waiting” recording (get on with it), then the message itself began. “Hey Ronan, this is Alex. Calling to give you some good news.” Slight skip of the heart.

“Congratulations Ronan, you’re going to be a raevan guardian!”

His jaw dropped, brain filling with white noise, but the message wasn’t finished.

“Come by whenever you’re ready and well get you set up with the necessary materials. Once the paperwork’s done, you’ll be on your way. Welcome to the family Ronan, and I look forward to seeing you again!”

The selkie just stood there, phone at his ear and mouth open, mind still processing what he had just heard. He was going to be a raevan guardian. Him. This was real.

Of course, right at that moment he also had to remember how he had come in completely clueless.

Sinking down into a chair he covered his eyes with one hand, the phone now resting in his lap. “... that really just happened, didn’t it?”

He watched Ronan's face with rapt attention. Every little quirk of the taller man's face was not missed by Zeke, and because of that, his pressed lips face faded into a grin as he watched the scene before him play out. When Ronan slumped into the seat behind him and uttered his disbelieving question, Zeke couldn't help but laugh out loud.

"It did!" His eyes were bright as he confirmed what the message had already told the selkie and Zeke reached out to clap both hands on the older man's shoulders and give him a gentle shake. "You are one hundred percent a true blue member of the Lab family now! Congratulations Ronan!"

Too excited with what just occurred and what was going to occur next, the vet released the sitting man's shoulders and all but ran to his desk, sliding across floors that had been professionally cleaned last night to his spot behind it. He looked back to Ronan as he happily drummed his hands against the desktop with a made up beat, then gestured to the chair before him while bouncing on the balls of his feet. This was all going splendidly thus far and, bless him, Zeke could NOT wait to give the selkie the tools of the trade!

"What do you say we get you all set up, eh? I've got a Soul Glass and an Essence just dying to go home with you!"

Sliding his hand down his face, Ronan's expression went slack, still somewhat numb towards the words being directed at him. He... he'd only be able to meet a few people related to the Lab so far, and now this was happening. Sure, the meetings had been wonderful, but he hadn't realized he'd made that big of an impression.

Seemed with all he'd been through life could still blindside him.

"Might as well," Ronan said, shaking his head in an attempt to ground it back in reality. Getting up he went over to the desk, fingers tapping against each other at the prospect of actually seeing an essence. "Can I see what I'll be taking?" Not exactly bouncing on his feet, but the selkie's eagerness was still apparent.

The vet's eyes followed Ronan the entire way as the man went from sitting in the first chair he fell into to the seat before the raver's desk. Where the selkie's eagerness was reserved, Zeke's was out and in full force; and from head to toe the younger man was a ball of energy. Ronan's question wasn't met with a pause or a moment of consideration. Instead, the moment the words died in the air, the vet had nodded and pulled the metal briefcase out from under the desk with no sound but a hummed note of agreement.

With surprising care Zeke laid it out on the desk, not caring much to sweep aside the scattered papers and assorted secretary-related objects that littered the top. Despite numerous glances to the name inside the manilla folder now mushed between briefcase and desk top, in the vet's rapidly growing delight he had not looked down at anything else - including the line marked with what the Essence given to Ronan would be. What lay within the case was a mystery to him too, and now that it hit him in that moment, Zeke found it appropriate. He was going in blind, Ronan was going in blind...so what was better than discovering the wonder that lay inside together? Zeke couldn't think of anything else in that moment and instead put all his focus into unlatching the for-once finicky snaps that held the case together.

"Damn these things," he said by way of apology as his fingers pulled at the grooved sliders. Despite his words he was chuckling, and he gave a shake of his head as he stopped for a moment to wipe his hands on the front of his jeans. "Okay let's try that again."

With drier fingers and palms the sliders snapped into their unlocked position easily the first time Zeke tried. Again the vet shook his head - but out of amusement this time - and without missing a beat pulled the top of the case up to reveal the contents inside.

"Here we go...Meet your new Soul Glass and Essence, Ronan!"

Inside the case were the two objects Ronan would need from here on out, at least until the former that Zeke spoke of had captured a soul. The Soul Glass was the same size and weight as the rest that had once been used by all of the Lab Guardians, but the cloth that separated the bulbous glass orb at its base and steel apparatus at the top was unique from all others. Black as night overall, it had a line of mustard yellow sweeping and arching over its surface without any rhyme or reason to it. In the overhead light, the yellow stood out starkly against its background and definitely drew the eye. Zeke instantly thought of bumblebees upon seeing it.

Not to be undone by the cloth, the Essence was most definitely different than its counterpart as well as those that came before it. Neither black nor yellow, what sat inside the cork-stopped jar was a large piece of bark. Its brown surface was deeply lined and rutted, and it looked freshly cut from its original tree, but what made Zeke's brow raise the most in surprise was the red that seeped from it and ran down those lines to puddle around it at the Essence jar's bottom.

"Well that's different," he said, not without awe. The raver gestured at Ronan to take the two items and while the selkie did that, the vet gently raised the suitcase and pulled the manilla folder free. One flip and a short bout of skimming later, the vet had a name for the peculiar Essence that now belonged to his companion.

"Your Essence is called 'Bleeding Bark'." He peered over the folder and the lip of the suitcase lid, his nose and up showing as he spoke. "I guess we can accurately say that that stuff is not sap."

Ronan watched as Zeke pulled out the briefcase from below the desk, surprised to note that it was made of metal. What kind of material was he getting where it needed that sort of protection? After a brief moment of fumbling with the clasps the answer was finally revealed, two very different bottles nestled inside the case.

The first bottle, the soul glass, gave Ronan a chill when he saw it. This was the object that would take something's... someone's soul. It had been one thing to hear about it in the past, but quite different to see it for himself. Now he found himself hesitating, wondering if this was something he really wanted to commit to, but he decided he'd cross that bridge when he came to it. At least whoever was... donated would have a second chance at life. If it weren't for that the selkie had a feeling he'd be walking away right now.

The second bottle, however, equaled if not surpassed the first in it's level of unsettling. Bleeding bark. Blood. Hand extending without a word he picked up the jar, gazing inside and watching a drop of red fall into the puddle below, small ripples spreading out. It was morbid - exceedingly so - and yet it also fascinated him. Still, he now understood why he'd been told to stay away from the storm fragments as a child. No telling how dangerous other distortions of the world might be.

Ronan reached for the soul bottle, but when his fingers brushed against the glass he pulled back with a hiss, his entire hand feeling like it had just been dunked in ice. Pausing for a moment he wiggled his fingers until feeling returned, this time making sure to only touch the metal when picking it up. Okay, this one was definitely the winner of the creepy award.

"Different might be an understatement." Whatever he had been expecting to see, this was not it.

The hiss the selkie made had Zeke looking at him with concern.

"You okay?" From Zeke's vantage point, the older man might have knocked a digit against the case or perhaps scratched himself on the lip of the bottom half. "D'you need a bandage or something?"

Immediately the vet's left hand went to the top left drawer of his desk, where, among other things, a miniature first aid kit was tucked inside. The drawer was opened but Zeke paused from pulling the kit out when Ronan spoke.

"I'll say. The paperwork doesn't say what it can do, only what it is, so I can't say anything else about it. Well...I guess I can say it's pretty darn neat, but then again all the Essences are pretty darn neat." He beamed at the selkie, pulling the case away and placing it back on the floor. "Speaking of paperwork, you do have to read and sign the documents in this folder here. It's just legal stuff, but while you do, I'm happy to answer any and all questions you have about anything."

He took his seat, casting a brief glance to the opened drawer to his left before looking at Ronan patiently and expectantly; quietly itching to take a look at the other man's Essence all the while. Every new Guardian had questions one way or the other, even the ones who had been involved in the Lab's socials or met Raevans in the past. Zeke honestly enjoyed this part and for all he knew, the man sitting across from him might throw him a real curve ball. It had been awhile since he had had one of those!

"I'm alright." Ronan wiggled his fingers another time, reminding himself to keep the soul jar far away from Maili. That girl had a nasty knack for getting herself into trouble, and while he'd learned to deal with it for the most part over the years the soul jar was some extra ammo she could most definitely do without. Listening as Zeke stated his own thoughts and ran down the material, Ronan gave a short nod when the folder was passed over to him, flipping through the pages and skimming over the material.

In a way, it wasn't that much different from the adoption forms he'd gone over for Maili and Kris. Even so there were constant little reminders of the slightly stranger nature of this adoption and the selkie found himself rereading passages more than once. After he felt like he had absorbed enough info he began to scrawl in his signature on different pages, looking back up to Zeke and asking questions along the way.

"So how long will things take once I return the materials? Are there any specific renovations I should start to make to my place? What is that soul bottle made of anyway?"

Zeke leaned back in his chair, arms placed atop the arm rests and fingers curled around the ends. He leaned his head back slightly and turned his eyes to the ceiling while - unbeknownst to him - he started to idly suck his lip ring. The first question wasn't hard in all honesty, however the fact that some Raevans had taken YEARS to develop, be born, and go home with their new family was something he couldn't just throw out there with a grin and a laugh. From what he had discovered it wasn't a common thing but it was something that might alarm the man before him and he didn't want to do that in any way, shape, or form.

But then again, it's gonna be a shock no matter how I say it. So might as well get it out in the open and roll with whatever punch came after the reveal! Zeke lowered his gaze and fixed his posture, but leaned forward with his elbows on the desk in a nonchalant manner. As he spoke, his hands moved.

"In all honesty, Ronan, timing varies from Raevan to Raevan. After you return the Essence and the Soul Glass when its been filled, it could take anywhere from a few weeks, to a few months, to even a few years." He straightened when he spoke the latter, putting his hands out before him to stop any fears before they started. "But believe me when I say that last part there is really rare. There's only been...Two or three Raevans in the Lab's entire history that took years to grow and be born, so the stats aren't really in that length of time's favor." He smiled easily, dropping his hands and moving on to Ronan's next query.

"Renovations...Well you'll definitely want to set a bedroom aside for the Raevan for sure, and all the stuff that goes into it. Bed, dresser, mirror, yadda yadda. Aside from that, you shouldn't have to all out baby-proof your place. Some Raevans are born with a toddler's mind, but quite a few are born with the ability to speak and comprehend so I guess you'll have to play it by ear when he or she is born." He started sucking on his lip ring again. "What else...Oh yeah. Depending on the soul and Essence you'll want to put those things into consideration. So like...Take Anya for example. She's got a spider for a soul, so she likes it calm and quiet and being independent. Maybe your Raevan will like the fresh air and outdoors, given the tree Essence," He gave his shoulders a shrug, but continued to smile. "but again, it'll be playing it by ear. The Soul and Essence play a big part in a Raevan's demeanor but they aren't completely cookie cutter to it, you know?"

It was sort of hard to explain. The Essence and Soul mixed together with science and magic to create these beings. In many Raevans, each half was somehow apparent in their physical appearance although this wasn't always the case. Zeke thought of Anya and how her looks screamed her soul like a neon sign, but her Essence was muted and only showed in her hair, human eyes, and the cloud that billowed from her rune's center. This might have been due to the curse placed upon her before her birth to keep the Fel Virus in check, but all the same she was still an exception and Zeke was sure there were other Raevans who showed more of one part of their make up than the other. This could also be said for their personalities as well, he was sure. The two key factors blended and Raevans took on personality traits from their make ups just as much as their looks and clothing. Anya liked to knit and sew and create, but those weren't the only things she liked to do. She liked being left to her own devices and the quiet, but she wouldn't just roll over and take any abuse or run away from a fight either.

"I know I'm probably not answering that in the best way, but...Whatever comes out of your Essence and the soul you capture is going to have traits of what they're made of, but they're also going to be their own person." And here he reached for the Essence jar, pulling it over and turning it so Ronan could see the small pool of blood at the base. "Who knows, maybe your Raevan faints at the sight of blood, instead of being totally cool with it!" He had to laugh at the very idea, although he did hate leaving the other man with a fancy way of saying 'I don't really know, man'. It was all up in the air from now until the Frei came about, though Ronan was sure to figure stuff out fast once that little boy or girl was bodily in his home. Zeke shrugged again and put the Essence back down between himself and the selkie.

"Anyway, as for your last question, the bulb's made of a really thick glass and the top part there is surgical grade metal. As far as I'm aware you'd have to run the thing over with a dump truck to break it, but Dr. Kyou uses magic to make sure the soul doesn't leak out until it's ready to be made into a Raevan." It was one of those 'one way in, no way out' sort of things. Kind of scary when the vet thought about it, but he was glad there was a 'no human souls' fail safe in place. If Dr. Kyou was anything, it was cautious. The last thing anyone here wanted was to find out one of their Guardians had accidentally gotten their soul sucked into the orb!
PostPosted: Thu Nov 28, 2013 8:34 pm

Years...?

While that length of time was established as abnormal shortly after Zeke mentioned it, it still rattled around in his head for a few moments. Strangely enough, he wouldn't be completely against it. It'd give everyone more time to mature and be ready after all. Even so, years might be pushing it.

Renovations were familiar area for Ronan, already having worked on the rooms for both Maili and Kris, though this would probably still be different somewhat different - after all, this resident might be able to fly around the room for all he knew, and there was no telling what else might be brought in by the essence or soul. "So just like anyone else," he murmured at the mention of different personalities.

As much as the bottle had creeped him out earlier he still had to give a laugh at a mental image of the bottle being run over by a truck and the truck being the thing damaged. "Well, I'll just need to make sure it doesn't go rolling out in to the road then," he said with a smile. Scribbling out the last bit of info on the pages he handed the stack over to Zeke. "I think that's the last of it, though you can double check if you want."

"I always double-check." He gave Ronan a playful grin and a wink as he said that, pulling the papers forward and giving them the cursory glance to make sure everything was signed, initialed, and dated as needed. When it was clear everything was in order, Zeke gave his own signature to a line on the very bottom of the paper and closed the file with an added pat on the cover.

"You're set there, Ronan. And actually, you'd be surprised about those Soul Glasses. Sometimes it seems like they purposely end up in the strangest places, but I guess that's how most of the surprise captures happen." Zeke shrugged lightly, knowing full well that surprise captures were how the majority of souls were obtained by Guardians. Some were accidents, some were purely random, but regardless they were all very surprising for those chosen to be caretakers for a future Raevan. It was nice to see that the vast majority took them all in stride. Considered it fate or destiny, even.

"Now lemme think here...I gave you your Raevan making tools, you signed the paperwork..." Zeke sucked his lip ring again. "I think all that's left is seeing if you have any more questions or concerns or whatnot and giving you the contact list for everyone in the Lab. So if you have anything else you wanna know, feel free to ask!"

While he waited, another drawer was pulled open and Zeke rifled through an accordion file full of papers. Extra forms, slips, receipts for things - all of your standard office and laboratory paperwork was located in this drawer and sectioned off as need be. The vet spent a couple minutes searching before quietly saying "Ah ha!" and pulling out two stapled sheets of paper. He set this on the desktop in front of himself, highlighting a few names and their respective information near the top.

"This is the contact info: every Guardian and Raevan the Lab has is on this list. Names, addresses, phone numbers, email, it's all there. Since we have new Guardians cropping up all the time, we'll periodically snail mail everyone an updated list. Yours will be added once I get all your stuff put into the system." He handed over the sheets and gestured to the top of the page. "The names I highlighted are Lab staff. Myself, Alex, Isikoro, and Dr. Kyou, of course. If you need any of us at any time, you're free to call." Zeke beamed. If Ronan needed him, Zeke would be there as soon as asked no matter what.
