Anandi was being her usual self, scuttling from place to place with an errand list for her mother. She first had to visit the office supply store to replenish the supplies for her younger sibling's new school year coming up, then it was off to the grocery store for herbs and spices, and then she needed to go pick up some dry cleaning. Nothing was impossible for Anandi the Magical Errand Girl! Or so she thought. Remembering which order to do things in was the hard part, but that was why one carried a list!

Unfortunately, Anandi was easily distracted. She caught the sight of a flash of brilliant hair and ribbons and was immediately intrigued. The girl was walking along by herself and well... she looked kind of sad? It was Anandi's job to cheer people up after and all the Indian girl took it upon herself to do just that! Plus - ribbons. She wanted to know all about the ribbons. Shoving her plastic bag of school supplies in her low-slung pouch, Anandi took to greeting her by stepping out in front of her and walking backwards.

"Hi! I couldn't help but notice your hair and your hair is gorgeous! Is that your natural color? Oh!" The girl stuck out her hand in greeting. "I'm Anandi! I go to HITS and you look about my age, but I've never seen you at my school. Where do you go to school?"

That's Anandi - right to the point.

Aggie had been taking a walk to re-familiarize herself with DC and ended up spending most of the little trip mentally beating herself black and blue. Why was she such a crap senshi, and how exactly could she approach the problem to become better? She'd already started with asking other senshi for help, which she figured was as good a starting point as any, and she'd begun taking capoeira which would hopefully help her become a better fighter - although it'd probably be a long while before she became really effective, considering how long the sport took to master.

Which was why, in her distraction, she hadn't noticed the other girl before she was literally right in front of her. Walking backwards, at least, so no collissions happened, to Aggie's great relief, but still. Maybe she should note down 'being more vigilant' on her list on improving herself.

"Hi?" Aggie floundered. "Um, t-thank you and yes it, um, is." Did she manage to answer in the right order? She was so confused. But reflex made her give the other girl - Anandi, as she'd identified herself - a handshake when she held out her hand. For once it was just a limp shake lacking her usual enthusiasm, but Aggie was so confused. "HITS?" Her face was as baffled as her voice. Anandi was a force of nature. "I j-just started at DCU, about um, a month ago? M-maybe less."

"Oh! Then you must be new around here! Would you like me to show you around? We can't have you getting lost, especially in a new place where you just started school! What are you majoring in?" The Indian girl whirled around and wrapped an arm around Aggie's to act as a guide. Her smile was bright and broad as she walked along. Oh, she was forgetting something very important to a newcomer! "HITS! It's the Horizon Institute for Technology and Science! I'm majoring in Technology and engineering there. It's like a special tech high school. I love it a lot and it's a lot of fun."

As they walked along (or rather, Anandi dragged poor Aggie by the elbow), the chipper student went about pointing things out. "Oh hey, you didn't tell me your name! But that's okay. You don't have to be shy or anything - I don't bite. And I love making new friends! You'll be my friend, right?" Anandi was always one to ask about friendship first and more important questions later. Her smile sparkled on her face and she hoped the shy redhead would come out of her shell a little bit.

"Hey! Maybe we can visit a cafe or something? Have you had lunch yet?"

"Oh, er, I'm not really new, but sure, that'd be fun?" A new opportunity to make a friend! No matter how bafflingly it had come about, a chance to make friends was still a chance to make friends. Aggie smiled tentatively. "I'm majoring in Geography. It's k-kinda dorky, but also really fun!" Her voice was a bit defensive - geography might be her passion, but the red-head also considered it to be horribly nerdy. She'd been worse about it when she was younger - at least now she was comfortable enough to publicly declare her major without much shame, when she'd never even have considered that possible two years ago.

Really, it was mostly the horrifying prospect of spending her uni career with an awfully boring major like 'English Literature' or 'Psychology' that prompted her into being more open about her love for geography.

"T-that sound really cool! Really!" And it really did; it sounded like the sort of place where you could be geeky without anyone looking askance at you.

"You, you want to be friends with me?" She was back to blinking rapidly, looking befuddled and obediently following along with Anandi. "That would be... that would be great!" Aggie's smile was wide and beaming - Anandi had definitely struck gold with that request. "Oh, um, sorry, I totally forgot to tell you, I'm Aggie! Well, Dagmar, but that's a bit hard to pronounce for some, so Aggie's generally what I use, y'know?"

The Indian girl whipped around and smiled. "Not really new? So where did you go? Vacation?" Anandi laughed and was very happy to know she had a new friend. The sandwich shop usually gave discounts for students and the more students, the better! She was thinking about a cranberry chicken salad sandwich right then. Oooh that sounded really good. "Geography sounds great! I loved geography class in middle school. It's fun to find out where your family comes from and where all the states are... and learn about the world! I mean, even beyond where things are but... that's about all I know about it. You'd be an expert!"

When Aggie's real name came to light, Anandi confided in her new friend. "Most people call me Randi because they can't pronounce my name either, so I understand! My full name's Anandi Rai so they just smash it all together. But you can call me Randi if you want. If you want, I'll call you Dagmar! I don't mind trying to get the pronunciation right if it means a lot to you!"

Once they reached the sandwich shop the braided girl bounced up to the counter. "I'd like a cranberry pecan salad sandwich aaaand some chips and a drink please! Aaaaand..." Anandi grabbed Aggie's arm. "Whatever my friend has, please!"

"Um, not really a vacation I guess - I went to Denmark with my parents, for, uh, about two years?" She looked shy at Anandi's praise, fiddling a bit with her shirt as she answered. "I'm not an expert or anything, I j-just really like it, that's all."

She shook her head, "I don't mind being called Aggie, it's like... only Danish people or my family calls me Dagmar, you know?" The red-head cocked her head to the side to regard the other girl with serious eyes, "Which name do you prefer?"

While she listened to the other girl giving her order, Aggie scanned the menu behind the clerk and bit her lip in thought. What did she want? Well... truth be told she wasn't really all that hungry, but it'd be weird for Anandi to eat alone, wouldn't it? So, "I'll have an, um, sandwich with chicken?" Okay, but there were lots of sandwiches with chicken. She'd probably have to be a bit more specific. "And bacon. A chicken bacon sandwich." Yeah, that sounded pretty normal and unharmful. "And a cherry soda, too."

The gruff looking man behind the sandwich counter repeated the order with a nod and went about making the girl's orders. "Come on in and sit down. It'll be a little bit but we'll call ya up when yer order's ready, okay? That'll be $10." The man then waddled down to the register (obviously he'd sampled quite a bit of his menu) and waited to Anandi to toddle along the opposite side of the counter to pay. Once that was done and the receipt was in hand, Anandi was given a cup for her choice of fountain drink and one cherry soda in a nice glass bottle for Aggie.

While she was filling her cup, Anandi continued her happy praise of her new friend. "Well if you really like it then I'd say you're an expert. Usually if you like something, then you know more about it than the average person because the average person isn't interested enough to learn!" That's what Mama likes to say, anyway. "Since you're going to school, maybe you can give me some pointers for college. I know Mama and Papa want me to major in medicine or engineering or something like my older siblings, but I just don't know."

Their order was called and off like a flash, Anandi bounced up to the counter to retrieve their lunches. "I'd like to major in something I enjoy but I have no idea what to pick!" She then set the sandwich in front of the redhead.

Okay, obviously something had gone wrong here - Aggie had had a bill curled up in her fist, completely ready to hand over her part of the bill when Anandi had gone ahead and paid for the both of them.

Paid. For Aggie. What were you supposed to do in a situation like this? Mostly the red-head just wanted to pipe up and split the bill, but then if she did that, the Indian girl might think her ungrateful and get mad.

Maybe she could just slip the bill into the other girl's pocket without her noticing?

So focused on her internal dilemma, Aggie nearly missed what Anandi said next. "Oh, um, you should never study something you don't like, I think. It's just a w-waste of time, yeah?" This was something she herself had thought on very seriously before starting uni in Denmark - and ultimately she'd decided that there was no way she was going to last a whole degree in a major she didn't care for. But she'd always had a direction to go in, and it didn't sound like Anandi had found hers yet.

"Let's see, what are your hobbies? What, um, what kind of subjects do you like in school?" That'd be a good start, the red-head thought. Usually you could glean at least a little from that.

Anandi tilted her head and took sips of her drink while listening to the redhead. She giggled lightheartedly at Aggie's stuttering. "Aww you don't have to be nervous! I really appreciate you coming to sit with me! And all your good advice. Mama would be so proud to know I met someone nice while I was out on errands!" The Indian girl clapped her hands in delight before returning to her sandwich in thought.

Hobbies? Well, Anandi had quite a few of those but hardly any of them would really qualify as being a major in college. Meditation? No. Random internet trolling? No. But engineering? Technology? "Hmm... well I really like computers! There're several tech classes at HITS that deal with software engineering and I really like those. I like the internet too! I'm not too good at writing but I really like reading, yep. That's a lot of fun. Do you think they have a major in computer science I might be good at, Aggie?"

Another few thoughtful chews. "Math is pretty fun I guess, but not science and I'm no good with art and things like that. That's part of the reason why I went to HITS." She frowned for a moment. "Well that and Mama and Papa wanted me to get a very good job like my sister and brother."

Aggie looked enthused; that was a really good basis to start from! There had to be lots of demand for people with educations in computer stuff these days, right? Pretty much everyone had a PC or a laptop after all, so surely there were some demand there that Anandi could help fill.

"That sounds great! Really, really g-great!" She nodded rapidly, smiling broadly at the other girl. "I'm sure they've got, um, a major in something like that! For sure. Would you like me to check next Monday?" Surely the information desk had to know something like that, and it'd only be a small detour in her lunch break to ask about it for Anandi.

"I'm pretty bad at art and stuff like that, too. English, ugh." She made a face. "But, I mean, you don't need to be good at art unless it's what you're gonna do for a job, right? For everyone else, it's just kind of a f-filler class." At least that was how Aggie had always seen it, but then again, she'd never found any particular enjoyment in attempting to draw things. It always went badly, and she'd never really gotten any compliments from her teacher, so it'd always been just another class she had to drudge through to pass her grade.

"And I'm sure you can get a good job! Computer stuff has to have lots of openings, right? Even in a recession like this, people are still using computers lots and new things are always coming out, so." The red-head smiled encouragingly at her companion and finally managed to get started on her sandwich. It was surprisingly good; even though Aggie hadn't really been hungry, the taste of the sandwich convinced her to keep eating.

The Indian girl nodded slowly while listening to Aggie. She frowned, which was uncharacteristic of her. "Yes, oh I know computers would be a great career and it's definitely not going anywhere. It's just..." She fidgeted, twiddling her fingers in on themselves. Anandi looked hurt and desperate for a moment. "Well, Mama and Papa don't see computers as... prestigious like a doctor or a lawyer or a scientist or engineer or things like that! They like to brag about their children and they don't think they can brag about Anandi, their computer programmer."

She laughed nervously. "I guess I'm not brave enough to defy them yet... I know I should do what I want to do, right? I'd be miserable if I didn't." She stared at her sandwich for a moment before nodding to herself. Chin up! We just met - I can't be all depressed in front of Aggie! She's trying to help me! "So umm... have your parents asked you to major in something special? Like, something they want you to do? Mama and Papa are pretty strict but... I know I want to do something with technology. Maybe I can be in your classes!"

The offer to find out more information and met with enthusiastic hand clapping. "I don't want you to go out of your way but if you could find out what computer majors are available at DCU... I'd be ever so grateful! I'd cook for you as thanks, definitely!"

For once the red-head actually managed to catch the shift in her conversation partner's mood; it was pretty obvious that Anandi wasn't happy with the conversation. Or, well, with her parents' opinion of what she'd like to do for a living, Aggie soon figured out. "T-that's stupid! Them, I mean, not you, um - " actually, wasn't insulting someone's parents bad form? Backtrack on that one, then, "I mean, no offense, but, yeah."

But the other girl already seemed to know everything the red-head was going to say, and Aggie couldn't do anything more than nod fervently along to Anandi's words and tell her what she thought was the truth. "You really would! You might not think so at first, l-like, 'oh I'll learn to love this' or 'I'll make more money like this!' but it's just not enough. People always need more than just that, because some days are always going to be crap and you need the good days to outweigh the bad but if you're just forcing yourself you won't have those good days and in the end it'll all just be crap. And stress. Probably stress."

She fiddled with her napkin, accidentally taking off a corner, looking a bit embarrassed after her little speech. Would the other girl think her too forward? But she was sure she was right, Anandi was awesome and fantastic and too alive to waste herself away like that. "My parents are pretty OK with me doing whatever I want. Well," she grimaced, "that's not entirely true. They kinda, uh, pushed pretty hard for me to stay in Denmark with them. Like, 'you'll be thrown out of the family!'-kind of pushing." She paused for a moment, staring into the air and getting a bit lost in her own thoughts. "I couldn't though, stay in Denmark. S'wasn't what I wanted, yeah? And anyway, they're pretty s-soft and totally didn't actually follow through or anything." She sent a smile to the Indian girl, shrugging lightly. Truthfully, she'd never really been worried that her parents would throw her out of the family - she was the pearl of their eye and they were much too mushy for a harsh punishment like that.

Besides, they'd already lost her once - her 'death' and re-emergence after the Barren Pines thing had done a number on them. They'd never do anything that could alienate her like that again, she knew. "But it'd be awesome if you were in my classes! And s-sure, it's no problem, I'll check out what they have to offer! Um," she threw a shy smile at Anandi, "and I'd love to try your cooking sometime."

"They would even say they'd kick you out of the family? That's... awfully harsh to say to your child..." Anandi frowned and picked at her food. Being kicked out of one's birth family and disowned seemed like an awfully big deal, at least to her. She'd had to be kicked out or even threatened with it, even if her family wasn't going to go through with it.

But her thoughts turned to the advice Aggie had to give and she nodded fervently. "Well... I mean... I will try! I will certainly try and tell them," Anandi changed her voice to what she thought sounded like something serious, but it was probably closer to nasal congestion than anything else. "This is my career path and I will be great at it! I will have good skills and you can brag to the family back in India about Anandi the Computer Wizard! And don't call her for tech support!" Anandi giggled at that last part.

Spirits lifted, the dark-skinned girl grinned from ear to ear. "I would love to be in classes with you, Aggie! Here, let me get your phone number..." Anandi pulled out her cellphone and began the process of adding a new contact. A new friend! How exciting!

"Eh, they get a bit over-enthusiastic when it comes to Denmark." Aggie shrugged with a smile. It perhaps sounded harsher in retelling than it actually had at the time, she figured.

Giggling along to Anandi's impression, the red-head shook her head with a grin. "Yeah, something like that! A-and you never know, if robots do end up taking over the world, you'd probably be like, the highest ranked human. 'cause you'd be speaking their language and such. That really didn't make sense, did it?"

"Oh, sure!" Digging her phone out from her pocket to check what her number was (why did phone numbers have to be so hard to remember?), Aggie found the contact she'd added of herself and handed the phone over to Anandi. "That should be it, I think."

"Ah! I'm so excited! Wait until Mama hears I met someone as nice as you on my day out for... oh... oops."

Anandi then realized she was supposed to get groceries and pick up some dry cleaning and be home soon. She better get a move on or Mama would be terribly upset! The Indian girl stood up and collected her things. "Oh thank you so much for sitting with me and chatting! You've given me a lot of confidence to just... pursue my dreams and not be so hung up on what Mama and Papa want for me. Thank you ever so much, Aggie!"

A brief but warm hug was exchanged. "I will text you! With all sorts of fun things I have on my phone! But Mama wants me home soon and I have some more errands I need to run and then I need to help with dinner before Papa gets home! Men get so grumpy when they're not fed on time!" Dropping Aggie a wink and a wave, Anandi scurried off to finish her errands and not disappoint her Mama again for the second time that week!
