Ordinarily, Approaches for wher clutches were characterized by their smaller scale and general lack of fuss, but Malvren's latest had a very different feel from other before it. The Handlers were flush with victory, already busy with the tasks of making Weyr into Wherhold, and some of the sense of celebration and smugness had been transferred to this clutch. The future of the whers was glorious, brighter than it ever had been, and these would be the first born into that new world. Expectations soared, but despite a marked interest of many to watch the Approach, no spectators would be allowed into the cavern. That would have been asking for trouble from the gold guarding her eggs, the gold who'd blooded on a Resistance fighter to fuel her Run.

No, only her handler, the Whermaster, and those hoping to charm an egg away from her were in attendance tonight. Even so, it was still considerably more than usual, and the mother-wher was unmistakably on edge. She rumbled in the darkness, her orange-red gaze fixed on the line of humans before her, and curled her spaded tail possessively around the egg that happened to be closest to her.

Let them dare to approach. Let them dare to try.

((You may post in any order, but the choice order is as follows:
1. Tabathi - Kyrieko - #6
2. Hans - JetAlmeara - #2
3. Rilli - Dizzy_Kat - #5
4. Dinah - Meepfur - #4

Make sure you put, in brackets, the number you choose at the TOP of your post so everyone can see what's taken and what's not. You may also play the gold wher as needed. Just remember that if she's aggressive towards someone, they're rejected...so if you don't want to be rejected, don't have her aggress at your character!))

[Taking Egg #6!]

Her mind was still reeling with everything that had happened so suddenly. The Weyr she'd been living among was no longer the stronghold of dragons. Whers and their handlers occupied Malvren now and Tabathi couldn't pick an emotion to truly express how she felt. She loved the whers. Loved them dearly and was happy to see them standing up for themselves. But...she was not a cruel individual and wasn't sure how she felt about the means this had all come about.

And then a clutch had been laid and the candidate had felt something inside of her light up and kindle back to life. She was super excited to have a chance to present herself to the Gold wher that she, for the time being, forgot about the current state of affairs.

Walking further into the cavern, Tabathi felt wary, glancing over her shoulder every now and then. She wasn't afraid of the whers thought. She was afraid of someone jumping out and ambushing them while they presented themselves to the clutching Gold. Though whoever was foolish enough to even attempt such a thing deserved whatever rage the Gold one would unleash upon them. Thankfully, nothing of that sort occurred and Tabathi found herself standing among the few chosen candidates. She offered the others small yet excited smiles before turning her attention to the Gold wher. She was gorgeous! A little rumbly, but still a beautiful creature.

Heart pounded with adrenalin, Tabathi took a deep breath and stepped forward. She stopped a polite distance in front of the golden wher and gave a deep bow of respect. The candidate could practically fee those orange-red eyes appraising her. It only made her heart beat a little faster. "I would...be honored, Golden one, if you'd find me worthy of caring for one of your eggs."

She heard that rumble, and the slight shift of weight against the sands. After a moment, Tabathi risked looking up to see the Gold merely regarding her. But - aside from the egg secured by her tail - the eggs seemed a little more revealed. Swallowing, she straightened and stepped forward cautiously. She reached down and picked up an egg that drew her attention more than the others. Egg tucked securely against her chest, she gave the Gold another bow and backed away as more rumbling began and the wher, once again, moved closer to her eggs.

((I hope I did this right...and if not, please forgive me QQ ))

((Taking Egg 2))

Hans was trying to put on a brave face in light of everything that had happened - poor Hansk had died and to be honest part of him felt like it had been for nothing - they hadn't won the weyr they had been fighting for and he'd been forced to shuffle off here to Malvren where the Handlers had been more successful. Still Hansk would have wanted him to move on, right? Hans was sure that the loyal blue would and so here he was presenting himself to a queen once more.

The first girl moved forward, but he ignored her and studied the eggs - which one looked strong? was that one perhaps a little bit bigger then the others? In the end he supposed it didn't really matter, unlike dragons, a wher was a wher and just as valuble as any other regardless of hide color. When the girl came back cradleing an egg Hans stepped forward giving the queen a respectful nod but not lingering overlong to bother her, as soon as he knew she wasn't going to reject him he just bent forward andscooped up an egg before moving back in line.

[Rilli shall have egg #5]

Rilli had put on a brave face for the crowd outside the cavern. She could understand their excitement and even feel a trickle of it herself but the loss of Rillsk had hit her hard. To have had him for so long, then to see him die right as they won had been a terrible blow to the young woman.

The moment she saw the Gold and her eggs she almost lost her composure. It was all to familiar. Rilli knew it wasn't betraying Rillsk's memory. This was one of the benefits of wher's after all. Plus they'd never let her forget it if she failed here. SHE'D never let herself forget it. She came here for a wher egg and she would leave with one for what has a handler without a wher? Riders may lose half their soul when their dragon dies...but she could believe the bond with a wher could be just as strong. She felt as if a portion of her had been torn away by the death grip of a dragon's jaws.

Tabathi's approach was watched carefully. Rilli focusing on the first two handlers and taking deep breath. Closing off the flood of emotions and preparing herself to make the painful decision that would replace her beloved brown. As Hans rejoined their line, egg in hand Rilli took that first step forward, giving a solemn nod to the massive gold. Her approach halted as the gold shifted in place, her handler's hand half raised in warning. After a tense moment she settled, showing no direct signs of agression, just a general sense of distaste towards those who wanted Her eggs. Rilli waited for the master's signal to continue her approached and with a quiet thanks, she retrieved the palest egg and quickly backed away.

[Taking Egg #4!
...again. ;;]

Dinah should have been happy, should have been reveling in the Wherhandlers' victories at Benden and Malvren, but the savage satisfaction she should have felt simply wasn't there. They had lost Trine, and she had lost her Dinahsk - lost her for nothing. If they had won, at least her green's death wouldn't have been in vain. She had always thought that one of the things that made whers superior was that the death of one didn't cripple the handler, but she hadn't truly realized just how much it would hurt regardless. She could get up and carry on, but shards, it had been so hard, and she missed her so much. After her escape, she had kept on fighting, fueled by rage and a desperate desire for revenge, but it hadn't been enough. And now that that fight was lost, and the battle over, she was stuck with a wealth of anger and nothing to spend it on. She was shorter of temper than ever, and snapped at the smallest of things - she wanted to get into fights, she wanted to hurt someone and even be hurt. Something, anything that might relieve the guilt and the hate that gnawed at her.

Maybe the answer lay with this new clutch. Maybe if she could get another egg, raise another wher, succeed where she had failed before...

Dinah was restless while she waited, but refused to let herself fidget, and so she simply stood, clenching and unclenching her fists. She was not the only one here who had lost their wher, but that didn't make her feel any better, and found herself rejecting sympathy for the others. She didn't want it for herself, so why give it to them? What she wanted was Dinahsk.

Another wher was going to have to do. It could be a sharding gold and that wouldn't be enough. But when her turn came, and only one egg remained, she shoved back all her turmoil and approached, bowing low to the restless gold, making a short series of vocalizations - better than the ones she'd made the last time she'd done this, given that she'd had a lot of practice between now and then...not that she'd ever really thought she'd be doing this again. She waited with a detached lack of tension or worry for the large gold to either approve or maul her, and when at last she unwound her tail from the final egg, Dinah stepped forward to take it.

Cradling it in her arms, she gave another bow and backed away.

Quote:
For the next week and a half, the Handlers could not be separated from their wher eggs. They were carefully watched and advised in the days leading up the expected hatchings. These eggs always hatched at different times, depending on how they were cared for, and it was always a source of high spirits when the eggs cracked and yowling, temperamental wher babies rumbled along.

When the eggs began to hatch nearly a fortnight after the Handlers presented themselves, each of the new pairs were presented to the Master Wherhandler and given the choice: to blood their wher or to trust their bond alone. Blooded whers would be allowed to work in more flexible positions due to the calming nature of a Blood Bond, those who did not would find a life in labour and the mines.

Lauren Shera - "Blood Lust"

Tabatsk is a little wher in a great big world: a world of darkness and danger, from a wher's everyday tasks like tunnelsnake-hunting to the conflict between handlers and riders. She may not fully understand why things are the way they are, but you don't need to understand something to see that it's dangerous. She is an extremely cautious creature, bordering on fearful, and often has an eye to her surroundings as though something really is going to jump out at her. Though she may be afraid, however, she is not cowardly; when that 'something' does jump out at her, she will face it down with with resolute determination. It may not be immediately obvious, but when push comes to shove, Tabatsk has the inner strength that fuels true bravery. It is not a lack of fear that characterizes her, but the ability to stand strong despite her fears.

Tabatsk is extremely wary of anyone but her handler, and is unlikely to truly trust anyone else, be they human, wher, or dragon. It's very rare for her to become aggressive unless first provoked or commanded, however, as she has an inherent dislike of conflict.

Jonathan Coulton - "Re: Your Brains"

Dinsk is not just another green wher, or even just another wher. She is exceptionally intelligent, though this intelligence doesn't manifest in a broader vocabulary, better grammar, or a signifiantly deeper understanding of the world around her than other whers have. Rather, her smarts are more of the strategic variety, in figuring out how things work in a practical sense, and then how to use that to her advantage. Curious and clever, she will observe and toy with (and gnaw on) her environment and the things in it until she has a grasp on them. She's the sort of wher who will figure out a way to open her kennel, or to slip out of whatever restraints are put on her if at all possible. Her handler will need to make sure everything is meticulously wher-proofed...and then Dinsk-proofed once she's discovered the weaknesses of the wher-proofing.

If she were of a more agreeable disposition, all this probably wouldn't be too serious, but unfortunately, that is not the case. Dinsk is vicious, savors violence, and even her handler may have difficulty keeping her in line from time to time. She cares little for any creature but herself, from humans to whers to dragons. And firelizards? Keep them away! Dinsk will, without fail, attempt to kill and eat them. Slowly.

Face to Face - "Won't Lie Down"

Certain of himself and fearless to the core, you will almost never see yellow in Hanssk's eyes. This is not metallic arrogance, though, simply a deep inner confidence in his own strength and capabilities. Hanssk is a wher who knows himself - inasmuch as there is there to know - and has full and absolute trust in his handler. He isn't the smartest wher around, but his indomitable spirit is all he needs to make it through. He doesn't know what it means to give up, to retreat or to back down. Once he has been set to a task, he will put everything he has into it until it's been done.

He will be ideal for hunting everything from tunnelsnakes to felines to wild whers, as he is a fighter to his core. Hanssk will fight until he's won or he's collapsed, and even then, it would be a mistake to count him out. If he has even an ounce of strength left, he will find his feet and throw himself into one final attack.

Socially, Hanssk is neither particularly aggressive nor notably friendly to others, tending towards aloofness, but prefers to be given his space and doesn't like to be touched by anyone other than his handler.

The Ataris - "Not Capable of Love"

Though his eyes give away his basic emotions, Risk can nonetheless be a very difficult wher to read when it comes to anything deeper than those surface colors, and his moods are difficult to predict. Most of the time, he is a very distant beast, forming no lasting attachments to any whers, humans, or other creatures. Indeed, even his bonded will often find themselves getting the cold shoulder from a wher who seems to want to be left alone. But does he really? It's a question they may find themselves asking from time to time, when he becomes suddenly and insistently demanding of attention.

One thing that will consistently bring this pressing need for affection on is if he sees his handler getting or giving too much attention from someone else. Whether it's a conversation that has gone on for too long or something more amorous, Risk becomes exceedingly jealous, and will physically come between his bonded and the other human(s) - and even chase them away!
