Biography: Mara was the type of child to have an imaginary friend. She talked to it and spent most of her time in the shade of a tree or in a corner of the field during recess when she was in preschool talking to it. But soon enough the imaginary friend went away and she was just the awkward loner child who sat in the back and took notes during class instead of passing them like the other students. What the others didn’t know, because she was passing her classes, was that her notes weren’t class notes at all, but drawings of things she’d seen in her dreams or gruesome doodles of different ways she imagined her classmates dying. When she started middle school, Mara started dressing in the Gothic Lolita style and writing dark poetry. Her classmates started teasing her more than they had through elementary school, calling her things like “Gothella” and “the Crow Girl”. After she recited Poe’s “The Raven” for the freshman year talent show, she gained a new nickname: Nevermara. One night, the night before a trip to a college campus in the next city over, Mara had a dream. A lovely dream, though others would call it a nightmare. She dreamt of an explosion and a bus full of high school students going up in flames. The next day, the Gotham High school bus she was on with her classmates was part of a major accident on the bridge out of Gotham. Mara was the only survivor, and she came away with only a broken arm and some cuts and bruises. When the EMTs reached the wreck and found her, Mara was laughing hysterically and babbling about her dream coming true. It was found later that the bus’s brake lines had been cut. When questioned, Mara would say nothing other than “I dreamt it would happen. And it did. My lovely dream came true.” Judged to be insane, she was sent to Arkham Asylum and has been there for the last four years. While she’s been there, a pair of ravens has taken to perching by her window, and she’s taught them a few dark phrases and to take food from her hand without snapping at her fingers. Every time the ravens would visit her, Mara would have a vision, so she believed they brought her knowledge of what would happen in the outside world, like Odin’s ravens in the Norse myths, so she named them Huginn and Muninn after Odin’s ravens.
