Appearance:
Having come from an upper-middle class background, he is always fairly well-dressed and well-groomed, and a rather handsome fellow to boot, though he is getting on in his years. Tall and lanky at 6'2", Ellis's head is topped with wavy, sandy blonde hair that he wears pulled back into a short pony-tail that never grows too far past his shoulders. A pair of spectacles are always perched atop a long, thin nose (to correct his farsightedness), and he has a very pale complexion, not one for doing hard or outdoor labor. His eyes are a pale brown and always seem to have a spark of excitement in them, whatever it is he may be doing, unless they are focused on the page of a book.

Always appearing cheerful and upbeat, Ellis has a very obvious passion for books, and to a lesser degree, learning. He is the kind of person who seems to know a lot of small tidbits about a wide variety of subjects, but never specializes in any one field or category of those things. He is very absent-minded and easily distracted, but well-read nonetheless, and loves to banter about anything and everything, from fairy tales to random facts as well as real-world gossip (though he is often comically outdated in this). He adores his books, and makes a living selling, trading, and at times lending them to those he trusts, usually his students or friends.
While it's rare to see Ellis get outright angry, confrontations can get him fairly flustered, and he gets upset more than anything. He would rather solve problems than further them, and if he can't avoid trouble by talking things out he'll often try to remove himself altogether rather than face violence.
When he can, he enjoys tutoring and will take on students, making a little bit of extra money by teaching basic skills such as reading, writing, and grammar. He is a firm believer in the fact that everyone should have access to knowledge (if they want it), and he's been known to mentor those who cannot afford the help. While his business isn't exactly 'booming', he makes enough to get by and to live comfortably, and that's all he can ask for.
Religious Stance:
Despite his love of academia, Ellis is not one to denounce religion, specifically the Old Ways. The myths, stories, and songs fascinate him, though he does not deeply prescribe to any of them himself, too far removed from the wood for it to affect much of his daily life. He does have relatives who live nearer to it, though, and on trips to visit Old Castle even he cannot deny that there is a sort of presence there, easily felt.
History:
Ellis is the middle child of a textile merchant who passed away in Ellis' twenties and split his small fortune amidst his three sons to allow them to make their way in the world. Growing up he had many opportunities to learn and he took every one of them, taking business know-how from his father along the way. His older brother took on their father's business while the younger moved to Old Castle to open a bakery and be closer to their mother's side of the family. His widowed mother now works as a governess, though he has little contact with her.
He opened his bookshop in eastern Palisade when he was twenty-two and has been living and working there since, mostly by himself. Though he's had a few romantic relationships during his life, none of them ever seem to work out. He has his books, and his cat, and that was quite enough company for him...until Roma came along, of course. Ellis was out in Oldcastle visiting an aunt when the wood began to work its magic. He set out one morning and scared the whole family half to death by arriving the next day after midnight, frozen, with a totem in his pocket.
Ellis regards the whole thing with a whimsical sort of outlook, sometimes thinking that Roma's presence in his life is too good to be true, a thing out of legend or fairytale. He raised the little fawn and the two have been living in Palisade for close to three years.

If one had to choose a single word to describe Roma, gentle might come to mind. He is as mild as they come, slow to anger and patient with people of all ages, including children (who he often delights in interacting with). At times you'd swear that he was just a fawn in a grown guardian's body, taken to prancing about, even showing off at times, though only in good fun. He is open and amiable to human and guardian alike, as long as they are of similar sentiment.
When faced with danger, Roma tends to lean towards the flight aspect of the fight or flight response, something that often worries Ellis. Though protective of his chosen, Roma's default position is to get himself and his human charge away from any problem rather than to face it head on. Ellis often blames himself for this as he's spent most Roma's life coddling him.
Relationship with Chosen
Roma is very close to Ellis, having been raised almost the way one would raise a child. Despite living in Palisade, Ellis has made every effort to make sure his guardian grew up comfortably. To Ellis, Roma is like something out of one of the many stories he's read, and he has always treasured the buck's company despite the many odd looks he received over his strange 'pet' at first. Living in the city is a challenge at times, but they have come to terms with it, and Roma does well enough in the garden behind the apartment.
Despite Roma's gentleness, he can also pull a fiercely protective front if he senses his chosen is in danger. Sometimes it seems as if their bond may be a bit too strong, as Roma has thrown a fit or two over situations that ended up not being as serious or life-threatening as assumed. He also likes to get loose and wander around every so often, which scared Ellis out of his wits at first. Roma's wanderlust has caused his chosen a good bit of panic (and still does), but Ellis has learned to combat the buck's urge to roam by taking regular trips to the countryside.

General RP; other chosen. In my headcanon, Ellis has had Roma for nearly three years and has never met another chosen (ironically). It would be amusing for him to finally meet another and to possibly learn of recent events.
Clerks and bookkeepers; Running a business alone is difficult, if you have any characters living in Palisade who are looking for work, this might be something that could form a friendship or just provide for some shenanigans.
Students! Ellis likes to teach others, but his curriculum is usually limited to teaching reading and writing and basic english.
Guardian escapades; Roma often manages to escape the back garden to go exploring and gets into all kinds of trouble, forcing Ellis to set things right in the end.
